Stiffened Effect of Knee Brace of Cross-Beam in Steel Box-girder Bridges (강박스거더교 가로보 니브레이스(Knee Brace)의 보강효과)

  • Recently, a knee brace is usually installed in connection between cross-beam and main-girder of steel box-girder bridges. The knee brace is installed as a structural stiffener and mainly aims to relieve stress at joints and to prevent main-girder from lateral deformation. However, research on the knee brace is insufficient to obviously evaluate the necessity. The stiffened effect of knee brace is determined by using finite element analyses. Stress distribution, stress level of members and deflection of the cross-beam are evaluated by parametric FE analysis for the installation of knee brace and the depth ratio of cross-beam/steel box girder. It is seen from comparison of numerical analysis results that the knee brace installed in cross-beam of steel boxgirders bridges is not efficient as a structural stiffener with respect to stress relief and stiffened effect.

  • Revitalized alley-type urban commercial streets have recently received a lot of attention as a preferred place for people. The purpose of this study is to present implications in the planning and design methods for the making of alley-type urban commercial street. For that, theoretical review and case analysis were conducted on the street spatial characteristics of 'Jeonridan-gil' and 'Mangmidan-gil' in Busan, about site overview, street spatial composition, building use, streetscape and street furniture. The implications through the study are as follows. (1) Street environment should be created to improve the pedestrian space and environment. (2) The existing main use and the newly introduced use need to be coexisted. (3) The identity of the street must be maintained through adaptive reuse, etc. (4) The voluntary formation of the private sector and the planned making of the public need to be cooperated.

Experimental Investigation of the Drag Coefficient of Porous Road Signs (유공형 도로표지의 항력계수에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, various technologies have been developed for road facilities to reduce the load, some of which use technologies employing perforated plates for wind load reduction. Currently, there are no regulations concerning the drag coefficient of perforated plates for domestic road facilities. In the United States, the regulations regarding the drag coefficient of perforated plates in the 'Minimum design loads for buildings and other structures' were revised based on the studies of Letchford (2001) and Giannoulis (2012). In this study, a wind tunnel test was carried out to analyze the feasibility of applying regulations involving the perforated plates' drag coefficient. The results of the wind tunnel test and the drag coefficient used in the regulation were compared and analyzed. In addition, the reduction effect of the cross area of road signs calculated by applying the drag coefficient was analyzed. The results of the wind tunnel test and the value of the drag coefficient used in the regulation in the US were found to be very similar. Therefore, it was found that it is possible to apply the formula involving the drag coefficient of the perforated plate to the regulation and that the cross area of the perforated plate used for the post of the road sign is reduced by about 9.45% and that of the horizontal post by about 6.45%.

  • In this paper, the structure of traffic lights removed the wire for the completion of urban aesthetics is analyzed. The finite element model consists of shell elements from three-dimensional CAD model of actual traffic signal. Traffic light pole, horizontal stand shape, thickness, stiffeners, etc. are considered in this study. Analysis of stress and deformation is performed by applying wind load. When the wind load is applied, the result on traffic signal is analyzed. This study is to perform the basic tasks for improving the design.

  • In this paper, proposed a new lighting control system which can reduce power consumption compared to conventional street lamps and intelligently control the light efficiently depending on whether there is a vehicle on the street. The new lighting control system proposed by this paper detects the presence of cars by collecting and analyzing sounds generated by the movement of cars. Then, the system controls lighting of street lamps based on the above car detection information, and turns on the street lamps sequentially by transmitting the car detection information. Experimental results showed that lightings were controlled based on the presence of cars and that operations of the lamps were made by turning on the lights sequentially by determining the moving direction of cars. This system is considered a technology that can reduce energies by applying to local roads with a few cars moving or national highways where lights are always turned on with low energy efficiency.

The Estimation of an Origin-Destination Matrix from Traffic Counts using Conjugate Gradient Method in Nationwide Networks (관측교통량 기반 기종점 OD행렬 추정모형의 대규모 가로망에 적용(CG모형 적용을 중심으로))

  • We evaluated the availability of Origin-Destination Matrix from traffic counts Using conjugate gradient method to large scale networks by applying it to the networks in 246 zones. As a result of the analysis of the consistency of the model on Nationwide Networks, the upper and lower levels in model had the systematic relationship internally. From the analysis of the estimable power or the model according to the number of traffic counting links, the error in traffic volume had the estimable power in the range of permissible error. In addition, the estimable power of estimation of an Origin-Destination Matrix was more satisfactory than that of existing methods. We conclude that conjugate gradient method cab be applied to nationwide networks if we can make sure that the algorithm of the developed model is reliable by doing various kinds of experiment.

Prediction and Calibration of Transverse Mechanical Properties of Unidirectional Composites with Random Fiber Arrangement Considering Interphase Effect (계면 특성을 고려한 무작위 섬유배치를 갖는 단방향 복합재료의 가로방향 기계적 물성 예측 및 보정)

  • In this study, the transverse mechanical properties of the unidirectional fiber reinforced composite modeled with fiber, matrix, and interphase is predicted with the representative volume elements and is calibrated by adjusting the properties and thickness of the interphase by referring to the test results. While the conventional representative volume elements modeled with fiber and matrix shows high predictive accuracy for the longitudinal mechanical properties, but it shows some deviations in the transverse mechanical properties. In order to compensate such gaps, the interphase region is employed, and its mechanical properties are adjusted to improve the prediction accuracy according to various elastic modulus, thickness, and strength parameters. As a result, the deviation of the transverse elastic modulus and strength is reduced significantly similar to the test results of the unidirectional composites with the accuracy of the longitudinal mechanical properties preserved.
