  • In this study, we investigated the effect of wave height in coastal areas using discrete wavelet transform in Taehwa river basin in Ulsan. Through the decomposition result of tide data using daubechies level 7 wavelet and Curve Fitting Function, we confirmed that detail components of d3 and d4 were semidiurnal and diurnal components and approximation component(a6) was the long period of lunar fortnight constituent. The decomposed tide data in six level was divided into tide component with periodicity and wave component with non-periodicity using autocorrelation function and fourier transform. Finally, we confirmed that the tide component is consisted 66% and wave component is consisted 34%. So, we quantitatively assessed the effect of wave on coastal areas. The result could be used for coastal flood risk management considering the effect of wave.

  • A statistical test was carried out on the IID (Independently and Identically Distributed) assumption of the AM (Annual Maxima) data used to estimate the design wave height. The test was divided into independence (randomness) test and homogeneity test, and each test was conducted on AM data of 210 and 310 stations in coastal and inner coastal grids in typhoon and non-typhoon (monsoon) conditions. As a result of the independence test, the rejection ratios of the test are in the range of 1.8~5.3% and 1.4~6.0% for the non-typhoon and typhoon data sets, respectively. On the other hand, in the distribution difference test of typhoon data and nontyphoon data, the same distribution hypothesis was found to be rejected in the range of 47~79% according to the test method for both coastal grid and inner coastal grid. Therefore, in estimating design wave height by extreme value analysis, the estimation process by dividing the typhoon and non-typhoon data is appropriate.

  • Coastal vegetaion consists of rooted flowering marine plants that provide a variety of ecosystem services to the coastal areas they colonize. The attenuation of waves and sediments stabilization are often listed among these services. From this point of view, artificial vegetation model is an effective method of controlling sea bed and stabilization without damaging the landscape or the stability of the coastaline. In this study, numerical and hydraulic physical test for predicting deposition proces of a navigation channel caused by wave action is proposed. In the numerical model, we develop a numerical model for describing the wave attenuation and sediment transport in a navigation channel with a vegetation area. In addition, hydraulic model tests is performed in a navigation channel with irregular waves to examine the effect of vegetation in relation to deposition reduction in navigation channel. A comparison between the results of hydraulic and numerical tests shows resonable agreement.

  • We studied the annual variation of water temperatures in the upper 200m off southeast coast of Korea by means of harmonic analysis of the temperatures at 10 standard depths of 51 stations. The distributions of the mean temperature in coastal zone are almost parallel to the coast, whereas those in offshore are almost zonal. With an increase of depth, the annual amplitude decreases nearly exponentially and the annual phase increases nearly linearly. The average e-folding depth for the annual amplitudes is 65m, vertical change of the annual phase is 180 per 200m, and the vertical eddy conductivity is $4\textrm{cm}^2/sec$. Annual variations of temperatures in the coastal zone of a few tens miles from the coast are considerably different from those in offshore area. The e-folding depths in coastal zone are shallower than those in offshore region, and the changes of phase with depths in coastal zone are smaller than those in offshore region.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a development plan for the waterfront in the coastal ocean. The research method is conducted mainly on various materials such as marine design, waterfront, marine industry, harbor waterfront space, marine landscape related reports, papers, and articles. As a result, it was found that it is urgent to move, dismantle, and manage various sculptures or structures that are installed on the shore and cause visual pollution. The location management and maintenance of indiscriminately scattered fishing grounds are urgently needed, secure sufficient green buffer space, develop coastal marine roads across the country, create eco-tourism sites, contribute to regional revitalization and secure the production value of aquatic products by restoring the ecosystem. This study is expected to contribute to suggesting a direction for maintenance by focusing on the main management measures of the waterfront rather than the aspect of reckless development of marine design.

  • Sea wind isrecently drawing attraction as one of the sources of renewable energy. Thisstudy describes a new method to produce a 10 m resolution sea wind field using Sentinel-1 images and low-resolution NWP (Numerical Weather Prediction) data with artificial intelligence technique. The experiment for the South East coast in Korea, 2015-2020,showed a 40% decreased MAE (Mean Absolute Error) than the generic CMOD (C-band Model) function, and the CC (correlation coefficient) of our method was 0.901 and 0.826, respectively, for the U and V wind components. We created 10m resolution sea wind maps for the study area, which showed a typical trend of wind distribution and a spatially detailed wind pattern as well. The proposed method can be applied to surveying for wind power and information service for coastal disaster prevention and leisure activities.

  • The drifters of the Global Drifter Program were deployed in the northern East Sea for two years from March 2015 to compare and validate currents estimated from sea-level measurements with the SARAL/AltiKa altimetry satellite mission, specially designed to accurately measure sea level in the near-coastal area. The collocated (less than 20 km apart) directly measured current from GPS locations every 30 minutes and the currents normal to the satellite tracks show a similar correlation in the area shallower than 200 m depth as the open ocean and it makes it possible to investigate the time variations of the current along the coast in the northern East sea, where direct observations of current are scarce. The Liman Current along the Siberian coast is found to be southward all year round, but the North Korean Cold Current flows southward only in the summer. The North Korean Cold Current south of the Musudan cape mostly flows to the south, but the current direction depends on the presence of an eddy around the coast of Musudan cape.

  • The areas be affected maritime police authority of the Republic of Korea, are largely classified as inland waters, territorial waters, exclusive economic zone and continental shelf(hereinafter referred to as "domestic sea area") and high seas. Of these, the maritime police authority in domestic sea area follows a municipal law that accommodates the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea(UNCLOS). In addition, this Convention shall apply on the high seas. Meanwhile, on the high seas, foreign vessels other than domestic vessels are allowed to be subject to limited jurisdiction only for the anti-mankind criminal acts, such as piracy etc. this is in accordance with the principle of "Freedom of the high seas" and "maritime flag state," under this Convention. However, the illegal acts of foreign vessels that threaten the security of coastal states and the safety of ships on the high seas can cause many types of crimes other than anti-mankind criminal acts, and the jurisdiction of the coastal states exercised may lead to conflicts between countries. Therefore, this article would like to suggest a plan for institutional improvement to maintain international maritime order on the high seas and secure maritime police authority in coastal states.
