This study was conducted to test the efficacy of Ulva pertusa kjellman as immunomodulators under lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge in broilers by investigating their effects on serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) like ability, immunoglobulin concentration, and splenic cytokine mRNA expression. A total of ninety six1-d-old male broiler chicks (Ross 308) were divided into 4 treatment groups with 8 replicates of 3 birds in each group. NC (negative control, no immune substances), PC (positive control, ${\beta}$-glucan 25 ppm), Ulva P (Ulva pertusa kjellman Powder 3%), and Ulva E (Extract form Ulva pertusa kjellman 0.3%) were added in feed with respective substance. Heparinized venous blood and spleens were collected from five birds per dietary treatment at 5 wk of age. The SOD like activities in Ulva P and Ulva E were significantly increased in comparison with other groups (P<0.05). The immunoglobulin M content was lower in the Ulva E than other groups (P<0.05). Expression patterns of splenic cytokine mRNA in the IL-$1{\beeta}$, IL-2 and IL-6 were similar. Expression rate of IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-2 and IL-6 in Ulva pertusa kjellman (Ulva P, Ulva E) were decreased (P<0.05) in comparison to other groups. Expression rate of IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-2 and IL-6 were significantly lower in groups treated with Ulva E than Ulva P. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of Ulva pertusa kjellman improved SOD like activity and affect immune system by inhibiting inflammatory response in broiler chicks. In addition, it is more effective to use Ulva pertusa kjellman extract than powder for immunomodulatory function. These results suggest the possibility that Ulva pertusa kjellman could be used as the immunomodulator for inflammatory response in broiler chicks.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary probiotics and immunomodulator on growth performance, carcass characteristics, fecal $NH_3$ content and pathogenic bacteria counts in ileum and cecum and ileum of broiler chicken (Korean native chicken, HanHyup No. 3). A total of 120 (day-old) chicks were randomly divided into 5 treatments with 3 replicates and there were 8 birds per replicate. Dietary treatments consisted of five diets; the corn-soybean based control diet (C), the diet containing antibiotics (Avilamycin) 10 ppm (T1), the diet containing probiotics 1 [(Lactobacillus ($4.45{\times}10^6$) + yeast ($1.51{\times}10^6$) + Bacillus subtilis ($3.50{\times}10^5$)] at 0.5% level (T2), probiotics 2 [(Lactobacillus ($6.70{\times}10^7$) + yeast ($3.10{\times}10^6$)] at 0.5% level in diet (T3), and the diet containing probiotics 3 [T2 + ${\beta}$-glucan + organic acid] (T4) and raised for 9 weeks. There were no significant differences among treatments in weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion. Carcass ratios of broilers were higher in T3 and T4 than other treatments, however, the differences were non-significant. Internal organs and liver, heart weight were significantly increased in T4 (p<0.05) compared to other treatments. The fecal $NH_3$ gas content was decreased (p<0.05) in antibiotics fed group than others. However, probiotic fed groups were not different when compared with control. The number of Salmonella and E. coli in cecum were reduced in the group supplemented with probiotics and immunomodulator compared to the antibiotics (p<0.05). In this experiment, we showed that diets containing pro-biotics and immunomodulator were capable of an alternative to antibiotics.
The sixty natural springs and community wells used as a drinking water in the Daejeon area are mainly located at the parks and the natural green districts. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of water quality and the contamination of the springs and the wells, and to suggest the management strategy for the springs and wells. For this study, we undertook water quality data from Daejeon City. According to the statistic analysis of water quality data, unacceptable rate as a drinking water was about 28 percent in 1999 and 24.5 percent in 2000, respectively. Major unacceptable factor is coliform, and others are bacteria, yersinia, color, turbidity, Fe and F. The unacceptable rate shows a roughly positive relationship with precipitation, that is, it shows highest rate during a rainy season between June and September. The major contamination source is likely to be the excrement of wild animals around natural springs and wells. Most of springs are vulnerable to the contamination of coliform and bacteria because of short residence time and shallow circulation in subsurface environment. The water samples collected from 31 springs or wells show weak acidic pHs, the electrical conductivity ranging from 63 to 357 $\mu\textrm{S}$/cm, and the hydrochemical types of Na(Ca)-HC0$_3$ and Ca-HC0$_3$. The groundwater samples of low total dissolved solid(TDS) belong to Na(Ca)-HC0$_3$. type, and the groundwater of high total dissolved solid is shifted towards Ca-HC0$_3$ type in the chemical composition. These hydrochemical characteristics indicate that most natural springs is in the early stage of geochemical evolution. The natural springs should be closed during a rainy season, which shows a high contamination rate. We suggest that a protection barrier around the springs should be built to keep wild animals away from the springs.

The purpose of this study was to compare heavy metal concentrations in uncontaminated soil with those in soil influenced by industrial activities, and to investigate the relationship between change of heavy metal content and the kind of industry at the Iksan 1st Industrial Complex that has started since 1975. Soils sampled in 0-3㎝ and 3-6㎝ soil depth, respectively were analized for content of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. Change of heavy metal content in soil of the industrial complex were more accumulated 16 to 25% of Cd and Cu, 93% of Pb and Zn, respectively in samples compared with natural soil uncontaminated. But there was no different in Ni content between two soil. Distribution of Cd in soil layer of 0 to 3cm was the highest concentration of 5 ppm more at the textile industries, and then higher at the chemicals and the food processing industries. In 3 to 6㎝ soil layer Cd content was the highest concentration of 5 ppm more at the metal processing industries, and then higher at the textile industries. Cd accumulation in soil was different according to a kind of industry and soil depth. Cu content was the highest value of 400 ppm more in soil layer of 0 to 3cm at the manufacturing electric wires industry area and showed the accumulation phenomenon in soil layer 3 to 6cm at the ohmmeter, machines and electric wires industry area. Ni content was 35 ppm more in soil of the metal plating and processing industries regardless of soil sampling layer. Then it was 25 ppm more in soil of the building stones and semiconductor industries. Pb content was from 400 to 1000 ppm in soil of the chemicals and textiles industries regardless of soil sampling layer. Zn content was 1200 ppm more in soil of the chemicals and silk fabrics industries regardless of soil depth, and then lower in order to soil of leather processing${\le}$metal plating industries. In conclusion, changes of heavy metal kinds and content in soil of this industrial complex area were caused by the type or kinds of industrial activities. Changes of Pb and Zn content in soil were dominated at this area.
The study analyzed the relationship between harmful cyanobacteria and physicochemical factors in Lake Juam from 2005 to 2018. The research locations were designated St. 1 (Juam-Dam) and St. 2 (Sinpyong). Harmful cyanobacteria was found in four genera (Microcystis sp., Anabaena sp., Aphanizomenon sp., Oscillatoria sp.). The average standing crops of harmful cyanobacteria in both locations were 2,575 cells mL-1 and 2,557 cells mL-1 from 2005 to 2011. Since 2012, there has been a significant decrease that the measurements were 42 cells mL-1 and 82 cells mL-1 from 2012 to 2018. To analyze the reason for the decrease in harmful cyanobacteria, Pearson's correlation and t-tests were performed on data collected during the summer period (June-September). Pearson's correlation showed a significantly positive correlation with total nitrogen(TN), outflow, and storage and a negative correlation with electrical conductivity. T-tests were conducted in two different periods and showed decreases in total nitrogen, electrical conductivity, and residence time. The average rainfall was decreased from 263.3 mm (2005-2011) to 219.9 mm (2012-2018) and total nitrogen was decreased from 0.912 mg L-1 (2005-2011) to 0.811 mg L-1 (2012-2018) and the same variability was seen in TP (total phosphorus). Therefore, it seems that the low-rainfall decreased the nutrients (TN) and variability in the TP, resulting in a decrease in harmful cyanobacteria in Lake Juam.
This study investigated the effects of mild mental imagery inducing pleasantness or unpleasantness and cognitive mental arithmetic task on skin conductance level. Subjects were f undergraduates(male 5, female 4). They were given the list of the words and asked to write down the liked objects and the disliked ones freely associated with these words. Among these objects the most-liked one and the most disliked one were selected as the self-induced mental imageries. Data-collection procedures were as follows ; first baseline, pleasant imagery, 2nd baseline, unpleasant imagery, finally 3rd baseline, and mental arithmetic task subtracting continuously 7 from the number 500. During these trials, the SCLs were recorded every 10 seconds. The results indicated that there were nonsignificant differences between the 3 trial-baselines ot each condition. This suggested that unlike the procedures used in the previous studies, our procedures would give the stability of the baseline level necessary for the comparison of the effects of several stimuli. Also, the level of skin conductance in mental arithmetic condition was significantly higher than that of the emotional mental imagery. This suggested the possibility that mental arithmetic task would gave rise to the higher physiological arousal in comparison to mental imageries. Overall, it was suggested that the procedures and the stimulus presentation methods used in this preliminary study could be useful for the data-collection techniques for The future study. Implications for the future study were presented.

Ions play important roles in various cellular processes including fertilization and differentiation. However, it is little known whether how ions are regulated during early embryonic development in mammalian animals. In this study, we examined changes in $Ca^{2+}\;and\;K^+$ concentrations in embryos and oviduct during mouse early embryonic development using patch clamp technique and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The intracellular calcium concentration in each stage embryos did not markedly change. At 56h afier hCG injection when 8-cell embryos could be Isolated from oviduct, $K^+$ concentration in oviduct increased by 26% compared with that at 14h after injection of hCG During early embryonic development, membrane potential was depolarized (from -38 mV to -16 mV), and $Ca^{2+}$ currents decreased, indicating that some $K^+$ channel might control membrane potential in oocytes. To record the changes in membrane potential induced by influx of $Ca^{2+}$ in mouse oocytes, we applied 5 mM $Ca^{2+}$ to the bath solution. The membrane potential transiently hyperpolarized and then recovered. In order to classify $K^+$ channels that cause hyperpolarization, we first applied TEA and apamin, general $K^+$ channel blockers, to the bath solution. Interestingly, the hyperpolarization of membrane potential still appeared in oocytes pretreated with TEA and apamin. This result suggest that the $K^+$ channel that induces hyperpolarization could belong to another $K^+$ channel such as two-pore domain $K^+(K_{2P})$channel that a.e insensitive to TEA and apamin. From these results, we suggest that the changes in $Ca^{2+}\;and\;K^+$ concentrations play a critical role in cell proliferation, differentiation and reproduction as well as early embryonic development, and $K_{2P}$ channels could be involved in regulation of membrane potential in ovulated oocytes.
In this study, a method was developed using molecular biological technique to distinguish an authenticity of meats for processed meat products. The genes for distinction of species about meats targeted at 12S or 16S genes in mitochondrial DNA and the species-specific primers were designed by that PCR products' size was around 200bp for applying to processed products. The target materials were 10 species of livestock products and it checked whether expected PCR products were created or not by electrophoresis after PCR using species-specific primers. The results of PCR for beef, pork, goat meat, mutton, venison, and horse meat were 131, 138, 168, 144, 191, and 142 bp each. The expected PCR products were confirmed at 281, 186, 174, and 238 bp for chicken, duck, turkeymeat, and ostrich. Also, non-specific PCR products were not detected in similar species by species-specific primers. The method using primers developed in this study confirm to be applicable for composite seasoning including beefs and processed meat products including pork and chicken. Therefore, this method may apply to distinguish an authenticity of meats for various processed products.
$La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_{3-{\delta}$ oxide was synthesized by a citrate method and a typical dense membrane of perovskite oxide has been prepared using as-prepared powder by pressing and sintering at $1300^{\circ}C$. Precursor of $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_{3-{\delta}$ prepared by citrate method was investigated by TGA and XRD. Metal-citrate complex in precursor was decomposed into perovskite oxide in the temperature range of $260{\sim}410^{\circ}C$ but XRD results showed $SrCO_3$ existed as impurity at less than $900^{\circ}C$. Electrical conductivity of membrane increased with increasing temperature but then decreased over $700^{\circ}C$ in air atmosphere ($Po_2=0.2atm$) and $600^{\circ}C$ in He atmosphere ($Po_2=0.01atm$) respectively due to oxygen loss from the crystal lattice. The oxygen permeation flux increased with increasing temperature and maximum oxygen permeation flux of $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_{3-{\delta}$ membrane with 1.6 mm thickness was about $0.31cm^3/cm^2{\cdot}min$ at $950^{\circ}C$. The activation energy for oxygen permeation was 88.4 kJ/mol in the temperature range of $750{\sim}950^{\circ}C$. Perovskite structure of membrane was not changed after permeation test of 40 h and the membrane was stable without secondary phase change with 0.3 mol Sr addition.
Macroinvertebrates from a first order stream at Mt Jumbong, Kangwon-do, was examined for their abundance and biomass. Sampling was done by using a pipe sampler (${\phi}$ 20 cm) for 11occasions (n = 5) at 4${\sim}$6 weeks intervals during November 1997 through October 1998. Water temperature and electronic conductivity of the study stream ranged $0\;{\sim}\;14^{\circ}C$ and 15${\sim}$25 ${\mu}s$/cm, respectively. During the study, 53 insect taxa and 3 non-insect taxa were collected. Annual mean number of individuals (${\pm}$1 SD) was 77741${\pm}$69232${\cdot}$m$^{-2}$${\cdot}$yr$^{-1}$, being high in winter (${\pm}$1 SD) (December: 171178${\pm}$130468 $m^{-2}$) and low in summer (${\pm}$ 1 SD) (June: 29872${\pm}$13078 $m^{-2}$). Non-predatory subfamilies of Chironomidae and Nemoura sp. occupied 53.3% and 21.8% of annual abundance. Annual mean biomass was 10g${\cdot}$m$^{-2}$${\cdot}$yr$^{-1}$ in ash free dry weight (AFDW), being high in late winter (February: 16 gAFDW $m^{-2}$.) and low in summer (June: 3 gAFDW $m^{-2}$). Gammarus sp. represented 39.8% of the total biomass and was followed by non-predatory subfamilies of Chironomidae (15.2%) and Hydatohylax sp. (8.5%, Limnephilidae: Trichoptera). Since the non-predatory subfamilies of chironomidae were composed of many species, Nemoura sp. was the most abundant taxon. However, Cammarus sp. was surely the most important taxon to the functional aspects of this first order stream ecosystems.
