  • We synthesized a series of binuclear pentadentate Schiff base complexes such as $Co(Ⅱ)_2$ (BSPP)($H_2O)_2$, $Co(Ⅱ)_2$ (BSPD)($H_2O)_2$, $Mn(Ⅱ)_2$ (BSPP)($H_2O)_2$ and $Mn(Ⅱ)_2$ (BSPD)($H_2O)_2$, mononuclear pentadentate Schiff base complexes such as Co(Ⅱ)(BSP)($H_2O)$ and Mn(Ⅱ)(BSP)($H_2O)$. The composition of these complexes identified by IR, UV-visible spectrum, T.G.A., DSC, and elemental analysis. The electrochemical redox processes have been examined by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse polarography with glassy carbon electrode in 0.1M TEAP-Py(-DMSO and -DMF) as a supporting electrolyte solution. As a result of electrochemical measurements, the reduction processes for pentadentate binuclear Schiff base cobalt(Ⅱ) and manganese(Ⅱ) complexes occurred to four steps in $M(Ⅲ)_2$ / $Mn(Ⅱ)_2$ and $Mn(Ⅱ)_2$ / $M(Ⅰ)_2$ (M; Co, Mn) two processes through each two reduction steps with one electron, by contrast, the mononuclear pentadentate Schiff base cobalt(Ⅱ) and manganese(Ⅱ) complexes occurred to two steps in M(Ⅲ) / M(Ⅱ) and M(Ⅱ) / M(Ⅰ) (M; Co, Mn) two processes with one electron reduction steps.

  • A new tetranuclear Mn(III) complex $[Mn^{III}{_4}(sae)_4({\mu}_3-O)({\mu}_{1,1}-N_3)(OH)(H_2O)_2]{\cdot}H_2O$ (1) ($H_2sae$ = 2-salicylideneamino-1-ethanol) has been synthesized by the reaction of $MnCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$, $H_2sae$ and sodium azide in the mixed solvent of methanol, acetonitrile and water. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the four Mn(III) ions in complex 1 have a unique adamantine arrangement, whereas the coordination environment of each Mn(III) ions is different. Magnetic studies indicate that complex 1 manifests antiferromagnetic behaviors. The magnetic susceptibilities of complex 1 have been fitted by two magnetic models based on the suitable analysis of its magnetic structural topology.

  • Two two-dimensional cyanide- and phenoxo-bridged heterometallic M(II)-Mn(III) (M = Ni, Pd) coordination polymers $\{[Mn(saltmen)]_4[Ni(CN)_4]\}(ClO_4)_2{\cdot}CH_3OH{\cdot}H_2O$ (1) and $\{[Mn(saltmen)]_4[Pd(CN)_4]\}(ClO_4)_2{\cdot}CH_3CN{\cdot}H_2O$ (2) ($saltmen^{2-}$ = N,N'-(1,1,2,2-tetramethylethylene)bis(salicylideneaminato)dianion) have been obtained by using $K_2[M(CN)_4]$ as building blocks and a salen-tpye Schiff-base manganese(III) compound as assembling segment. Single X-ray analysis reveals their isostrutural cyanide-bridged $MMn_4$ pentanuclear cationic structure. The four Schiff base manganese units of the pentanuclear entity are self-complementary through the phenoxo oxygen atoms from the neighboring complex, therefore forming cyanide- and phenoxo-bridged 2D sheet-like structure. Investigation over magnetic susceptibilities reveals the overall ferromagnetic coupling between the adjacent Mn(III) ions bridged by the phenoxo oxygen atoms with J = 2.13 and $2.21cm^{-1}$ for complexes 1 and 2, respectively.

  • The solid complexes of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) with 4-hydroxy-3-(1-{2-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)- amino phenylimino}-ethyl)-6-methy-pyran-2-one (H2L) derived from o-phenylenediamine, 3-acetyl- 6-methyl-(2H) pyran, 2,4 (3H)-dione (dehydroacetic acid or DHA) and salicylic aldehyde have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, conductometry, magnetic susceptibility, UV-visible, IR, $^1H$-NMR spectra, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and screened for antimicrobial activity. The IR spectral data suggest that the ligand behaves as a dibasic tetradentate ligand with ONNO donor atoms sequence towards central metal ion. From the microanalytical data, the stoichiometry of the complexes has been found to be 1:1 (metal: ligand). The physico-chemical data suggests square planar geometry for Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes and octahedral geometry for Co(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) complexes. The x-ray differaction data suggests orthorhombic crystal system for Cu(II) complex, monoclinic crystal system for Ni(II), Co(II) and Fe(III) and tetragonal crystal system for Mn(II) complex. Thermal behaviour (TG/DTA) of the complexes was studied and kinetic parameters were determined by Coats-Redfern method. The ligand and their metal complexes were screened for antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and fungicidal activity against Aspergillus Niger and Trichoderma.

  • Unsymmetrical tetradentate Schiff base N-(2-hydroxy-5-methylacetophenone)-N'-(2-hydroxy acetophenone) ethylene diamine (H2L) and its complexes with Cr(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility measurements, IR, electronic spectra and thermogravimetric analyses. 1H, 13C-NMR and FAB Mass spectra of ligand clearly indicate the presence of OH and azomethine groups. Elemental analyses of the complexes indicate that the metal to ligand ratio is 1:1 in all complexes. Infrared spectra of complexes indicate a dibasic quadridentate nature of the ligand and its coordination to metal ions through phenolic oxygen and azomethine nitrogen atoms. The thermal behavior of these complexes showed the loss of lattice water in the first step followed by decomposition of the ligand in subsequent steps. The thermal data have also been analyzed for the kinetic parameters by using Horowitz-Metzger method. The dependence of the electrical conductivity on the temperature has been studied over the temperature range 313-403 K and the complexes are found to show semiconducting behavior. XRD and SEM images of some representative complexes have been recorded. The antimicrobial activity of the ligand and its complexes has been screened against various microorganisms and all of them were found to be active against the test organisms. The Fe(III) and Ni(II) complex have been tested for the catalytic oxidation of styrene.

  • A relation between antimicrobial activities and the formation constants of solid complexes of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) with tridentate Schiff base ligand, 4-hydroxy-3(1-{2-(benzylideneamino)-phenylimino}-ethyl)-6-methyl-2Hpyran-2-one (HL) derived from o-phenylene diamines, dehydroacetic acid (DHA) and p-chloro benzaldehyde have been studied. The ligand and metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, IR, $^1H$-NMR, UV-vis and mass spectra. From the analytical data, the stiochiometry of the complexes was found to be 1:2 (metal:ligand) with octahedral geometry. The molar conductance values suggest the nonelectrolytic nature of metal complexes. The X-ray diffraction data suggests monoclinic crystal system for Ni(II) and orthorhombic crystal system for Cu(II) and Co(II) complexes. The IR spectral data suggest that the ligand behaves as tridentate ligand with ONN donor atoms sequence towards central metal ion. Thermal behavior (TG/DTA) and kinetic parameters calculated by Coats-Redfern method suggests more ordered activated state in complex formation. The protonation constants of the complexes were determined potentiometrically in THF:water (60:40) medium at $25^{\circ}C$ and ionic strength ${\mu}=0.1\;M$ ($NaClO_4$). Antibacterial activities in vitro were performed against Staphylococcus aureu and Escherichia coli. Antifungal activities were studied against Aspergillus Niger and Trichoderma. The effect of the metal ions and stabilities of complexes on antimicrobial activities are discussed.
