  • The morphology of Poly(styrene-b-methylmethacrylate) (P(S-b-MMA)) block copolymer thin films deposited on silicon wafers was controlled by treating the substrates with Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAM) of phenylsilanes with different alkyl chain lengths. It was found that the treatment with SAM strongly modified the substrates properties, especillay the surface energy, as compared with bare silicon oxide. By futher adjusting the molecular weight of P(S-b-MMA), a variety of morphologies could be generated, including a perpendicular orientation of lamellea of PS and PMMA, which is required for industrial applications.

  • Styrene is a commercially important chemical used mainly in the production of raw materials and plastics. To determine the effect of styrene on hepatic activities of antioxidant enzymes, styrene was treated to Sprague-Dawley rats at 50 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg (i.p) twice a day for 4 days. There were determined the significantly increased activities of serum AST (aspartate aminotransferase), ALT (alanine aminotransferse), and the increased content of MDA (malondialdehyde) at the dose of 400 mg/kg compared to the control. The hepatic activities of XO (xanthine oxidase) and CYPdAH (cytochrome P450 dependant aniline oxidase) in the dose of 400 mg/kg compared to the dose of 200 mg/kg were more increased, which means the excessive ROS (reactive oxygen species)s were produced during Phase I. In addition, significantly decreased were rates of the hepatic activities of GPx (glutathione peroxidase), CAT (catalase), SOD (superoxide dismutase) and GST (glutathione S-transferase) at the dose of 400 mg/kg compared to the control. And, the group at the dose of 400 mg/kg showed more significantly decreased GSH (glutathione) level than the group at the dose of 200 mg/kg. The decrease in GSH could ascribe to the toxic metabolites of styrene, such as styrene oxide. In conclusion, these results indicate that the excessive ROSs and the toxic metabolites of styrene may result in the hepatotoxicity, and be related to their imbalanced activities for antioxidant enzymes.

  • Aspergillus niger LK harboring the enantioselective epoxide hydrolase (EHase) activity was isolated, and enantioselectivity of EHase was tested for various racemic aromatic epoxides. The gene encoding epoxide hydrolase was cloned from cDNA library generated by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction of the isolated total mRNA. Sequence analysis showed that the cloned gene encodes 398 amino acids with a deduced molecular mass of 44.5 kDa. Database comparison of the amino acid sequence reveals that it is similar to fungal EHase, whereas the sequence identity with bacterial EHase is very low. Recombinant expression of the cloned EHase in Escherichia coli BL21 yielded an active EHases, which can offer a potential biocatalyst for the production of chiral epoxides.

  • In order to investigate the thermal stability of electro-conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS), we have prepared films by casting PEDOT/PSS aqueous solution without using a binding material and measured surface resistances of the films while annealing at $200^{\circ}C$. Electrical properties of films were improved by annealing, and the maximum conductivity ($540S{\cdot}m^{-1}$) after annealing for 2 hrs was found to be approximately 3 times higher than that ($180S{\cdot}m^{-1}$) of the original film. The conductivities, however, dramatically decreased with an increase in annealing time and dissipated after 24 hrs of annealing. On the other hand, PEDOT/PSS films hybridized with graphene oxide (GO) displayed a salient improvement in conductivity by annealing, which was measured to be around $600S{\cdot}m^{-1}$ even after 30 hrs of annealing at $200^{\circ}C$. We tentatively conclude that hybridization with GO enhances the thermal stability of PEDOT/PSS.

  • In this study, effects of both the grafted ABS-g-MAH and the added graphene oxide (GO) on the impact strength of polycarbonate (PC)/poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) blends were discussed. The PC/ABS blends and PC/ABS/GO composites were fabricated by using twin screw extruder with ABS-g-MAH as a compatibilizer. The ABS-g-MAH was prepared by melting extrusion of ABS and maleic anhydride (MAH) with DCP (dicumyl peroxide) as an initiator using twin screw extruder and the synthesis of ABS-g-MAH was confirmed by the presence of carbonyl group (C=O) peak at $1780cm^{-1}$ of FT-IR spectrum. According to the thermal, rheological, and impact properties of PC/ABS blends, 5 phr (parts per hundred resin) of compatibilizer was chosen as an optimum content for the PC/ABS/GO composites. It was observed that the thermal decomposition of ABS/PC/GO composites increased with GO contents, but there was no significant changes or a decrease in the impact strength. Also the composite fabricated by ABS/GO showed small increase in the impact strength. From the result of the dynamic rheometer to observe the processing properties, the complex viscosities of PC/ABS blend including the compatibilizer increased, but the complex viscosities of composites added GO were not changed.

  • As the need for next-generation flexible electronics grows, novel materials and technologies that can replace conventional indium tin oxide (ITO) for transparent electrodes have been of great interest. Among them, a conducting polymer, especially poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) : poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT : PSS) is one of the most promising candidates because it is mechanically flexible, inexpensive, and capable of being processed in solution. Currently, there are a lot of research efforts on enhancing its electrical conductivity to the level of ITO or metal electrodes through chemical and/or physical processing. In this review article, we present various additives and pre-/post-deposition processing methods for improving the electrical conductivity of PEDOT : PSS. Some of representative reports are also introduced, which demonstrated the use of conductivity-enhanced PEDOT : PSS as transparent electrodes in electronics and energy conversion.

  • Catalytic conversion of structurally different epoxides to the corresponding 1,2-diacetoxy esters was carried out readily with phosphomolybdic acid alone or its supported on $SiO_2$. The reactions were carried out under solvolytic or solvent free conditions within 5-15 min at room temperature. The product 1,2-diacetates were obtained in high to excellent yields. Supporting of phosphomolybdic acid on $SiO_2$ showed the better catalytic activity than $Al_2O_3$. Conversion of optically pure R-(+)-styrene oxide to S-(+)-1,2-diacetoxy-1-phenylethane was carried with phosphomolybdic acid in high yield and stereospecificity.

  • Soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) is a metabolic regulator of epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs). EETs have many beneficial effects, vasodilation, anti-diabetes, anti-inflammation, cardiovascular protection, renal protection. Therefore, selective sEH inhibitors have a potential for treating these diseases. In the present study, screening methods for sEH inhibitors using PHOME ((3-phenyl-oxiranyl)-acetic acid cyano-(6-methoxynaphthalen-2-yl)-methyl ester) and 14-15-EET as substrates were established. To determine selectivity, microsomal epoxide hydrolase (mEH) inhibition assay was also developed using styrene oxide as a substrate of microsomal epoxide hydrolase. Our results obtained from 12-[[(tricyclo[3.3.1.13,7]dec-1-ylamino)carbonyl]amino]-dodecanoic acid (AUDA) used as a positive sEH inhibitor and valpromide used as a positive mEH inhibitor showed that these methods are useful for discovery of drug candidates.

  • BACKGROUND: Recent studies have described the importance of bacteria that can degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Here we screened bacterial isolates from commercial gasoline for PAH degraders and characterized their ability to degrade PAHs, lipids and proteins as well as their enantioselective epoxide hydrolase activity, salt tolerance, and seawater survival. METHODS AND RESULTS: One hundred two bacteria isolates from commercial gasoline were screened for PAH degraders by adding selected PAHs on to the surface of agar plates by the sublimation method. A clear zone was found only around the colonies of PAH degraders, which accounted for 13 isolates. These were identified as belonging to Bacillus sp., Brevibacterium sp., Micrococcus sp., Corynebacterium sp., Arthrobacter sp., and Gordonia sp. based on 16S rRNA sequences. Six isolates belonging to Corynebacterium sp., 3 of Micrococcus sp., Arthrobacter sp. S49, and Gordonia sp. H37 were lipid degraders. Arthrobacter sp. S49 was the only isolate showing high proteolytic activity. Among the PAH-degrading bacteria, Arthrobacter sp. S49, Brevibacterium sp. S47, Corynebacterium sp. SK20, and Gordonia sp. H37 showed enantioselective epoxide hydrolase activity with biocatalytic resolution of racemic styrene oxide. Among these, highest enantioselective hydrolysis activity was seen in Gordonia sp. H37. An intrinsic resistance to kanamycin was observed in most of the isolates and Corynebacterium sp. SK20 showed resistance to additional antibiotics such as tetracycline, ampicillin, and penicillin. CONCLUSION: Of the 13 PAH-degraders isolated from commercial gasoline, Arthrobacter sp. S49 showed the highest lipid and protein degrading activity along with high active epoxide hydrolase activity, which was the highest in Gordonia sp. H37. Our results suggest that bacteria from commercial gasoline may have the potential to degrade PAHs, lipids, and proteins, and may possess enantioselective epoxide hydrolase activity, high salt tolerance, and growth potential in seawater.
