  • In this study, we developed a system to detect the various defects in the metallic objects using the phenomenon that the defects cause the changes of the natural resonant frequencies. Our system consists of a FFT Amp, an Auto Impact Hammer, a Hammer controller and a PC. Auto Impact Hammer creates vibrations in the metallic objects when tapped on the surface. These vibrational signals are converted to the voltage signals by an acceleration sensor attached to the metallic part surface. These analog voltage signals were fed into an ADC (analog-digital converter) and an FFT (fast fourier transform) conversion in the FFT Amp to obtain the digital data in the frequency domain. Labview graphical program was used to process the digital data from th FFT amp to display the spectrum. We compared those spectra with the standard spectrum to find the shifts in the resonant frequencies of the metal parts, and thus detecting the defects. We used PCB's acceleration sensor and TI's TMS320F28335 DSP (digital signal processor) to obtain the resolution of 2.93 Hz and to analyze the frequencies up to 44 kHz.

  • The adsorption of molecular $NH_3$ on rutile $TiO_2(110)-1{\times}1$ surfaces was investigated using a temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) technique combined with a molecular beam apparatus. A quantitative investigation into the TPD spectra of $NH_3$ was made for $NH_3$ adsorbed on two kinds of rutile $TiO_2(110)-1{\times}1$ surfaces with the oxygen vacancy ($V_O$) concentration of ~0% (p-$TiO_2(110)$) and ~5% (r-$TiO_2(110)$), respectively. On both surfaces, non-dissociative adsorption of $NH_3$ was inferred from a quantitative analysis on the amount of adsorbed $NH_3$ and those desorbed. With increasing coverage, the monolayer desorption feature shifted from 400 K toward lower temperatures until it saturates at 160 K, suggesting a repulsive nature in the interaction between $NH_3$ molecules. At the very low coverage regime, the desorption features were found to extend up to 430 K and 400 K on p-$TiO_2(110)$ and p-TiO(110), respectively. As a result, the saturation coverage of monolayer of $NH_3$ was higher on the p-$TiO_2(110)$ surface than on the p-TiO(110) by about 10%. The desorption energy ($E_d$) of $NH_3$ obtained by inversion of the Polanyi-Wigner equation indicated that the difference between the $E_d$'s of $NH_3$ (that is, $E_d(on\;p-TiO_2(110)$) - $E_d$(on p-TiO(110)) was 14 kJ/mol at ${\theta}(NH_3)=0$ and decreased to 0 as the coverage approached to a monolayer. The observed adsorption behavior of $NH_3$ was interpreted using an interaction model between $NH_3$ and surface defects on $TiO_2$ such as VO's and $Ti^{3+}$ interstitials.

  • In this study, TiO2-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite granules were prepared via spray drying technique. To investigate the effects of solid content and binder/powder ratio in the slurry on the granulation behavior of TiO2 powders, the feed compositions were designed to vary over a wide range. The morphology, actual densities, and average granule size and size distribution of the TiO2-PVA composite granules were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy technique, a gas pycnometer, and an image analyzing program (Image-J), respectively. The results indicate that solid content and the amount of PVA in the feedstock slurry are the dominant factors determining the granule morphology, size, and size distribution of TiO2-PVA composite. Moreover, it was observed that increasing the solid content and the amount of PVA in the slurry improved the granulation process and reduced the granule defects. For the preparation of spherical TiO2-PVA composite granules with the minimum amount of non-granulated powders, the optimized composition of the feedstock slurry was found to be 35 wt.% solid and 3 wt.% PVA.

  • The performance of the DRAM is strongly dependent on the purity and surface roughness of the TIT (TiN/Insulator/ TiN) capacitor electrodes. Hence, in the present study, we evaluate the effects of organic contamination and change of surface roughness on the cylindrical TIT capacitor electrodes during the wet cleaning process by various analytical techniques such as TDMS, AFM, XRD and V-SEM. Once the sacrificial oxide and PR (Photo Resist) are removed by HF, the organic contamination and surface oxide films on the bottom Ti/TiN electrode become visible. With prolonged HF process, the surface roughness of the electrode is increased, whereas the amount of oxidized Ti/TiN is reduced due to the HF chemicals. In the 80nm DRAM device fabrication, the organic contamination of the cylindrical TIT capacitor may cause defects like SBD (Storage node Bridge Defect). The SBD fail bit portion is increased as the surface roughness is increased by HF chemicals reactions.

  • This study analyzed the influence of ball size and process control agents on the refinement and dehydrogenation behavior of TiH2 powder. Powders milled using ZrO2 balls with diameters of 0.1 mm, 0.3 mm, and 0.3+0.5+1 mm exhibited a bimodal particle size distribution, of which the first mode had the smallest size of 0.23 ㎛ for the 0.3 mm balls. Using ethanol and/or stearic acid as process control agents was effective in particle refinement. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that dehydrogenation of the milled powder started at a relatively low temperature compared to the raw powder, which is interpreted to have resulted from a decrease in particle size and an increase in defects. The dehydrogenation kinetics of the TiH2 powder were evaluated by the magnitude of peak shift with heating rates using thermogravimetric analysis. The activation energy of the dehydrogenation reaction, calculated from the slope of the Kissinger plot, was measured to be 228.6 kJ/mol for the raw powder and 194.5 kJ/mol for the milled powder. TEM analysis revealed that both the milled and dehydrogenated powders showed an angular shape with a size of about 200 nm.

  • We compared rest perfusion PET with redistribution perfusion SPECT to investigate the concordant rate between PET and SPECT images and analyze the discordant pattern. Materials and Methods: Rest N-13 ammonia and F-18 FDG PET were performed on 18 patients with old myocardial infarction and left ventricular dysfunction whose dipyridamole - 4hr redistribution TI-201 SPECT showed one or more severe fixed defects. Regional perfusion and metabolism were evaluated visually and quantitatively with 5-segment myocardial model. Results: There were high concordant rate in uptake pattern (80/90 segments, 88.9%) and high correlation coefficient on quantitative analysis (R=0.81, p<0.001) between redistribution TI-201 SPECT and N-13 ammonia PET images. Nine of 18 patients had SPECT-PET concordant pattern (Group I). Ten segments (9 in inferior wall, 1 in apex) from the remaining 9 patients showed SPECT-PET discordant pattern with abnormal TI-201 defect and near normal N-13 ammonia uptake (Group II). The diastolic and systolic left ventricular dimensions were significantly increased in Group II compared to those of Group I. When attenuation uncorrected N-13 ammonia PET images were reconstructed in Group II, it resulted in PET images with severe inferior wall defects nearly identical to those seen in redistribution TI-201 SPECT images. Conclusion: Redistribution TI-201 SPECT images showed high concordant rate and correlation with rest N-13 ammonia PET images. Most of discordant segments had fixed thallium defects in inferior wall with nearly normal N-13 ammonia uptake, which may result from severe left ventricular dilatation and attenuation by the left hemidiaphragm and cardiac blood pool.

  • NiTi alloy has been used for orthodontic wire due to good mechanical properties, such as elastic strength and frictional resistance, combined with a high resistance to corrosion. Recently, these wire were coated by polymer and ceramic materials for aesthetics. The purpose of this study was to investigate surface characteristics of polymer coated NiTi alloy wire for orthodontics using various instruments. Wires (round type and rectangular type) were used, respectively, for experiment. Polymer coating was carried out for wire. Specimen was investigated with field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy(EDS) and atomic force microscopy(AFM). The phase transformation of non-coated NiTi wire from martensite to austenite occurred at the range of $14{\sim}15^{\circ}C$, in the case of coated wire, it occurred at the range of $16{\sim}18^{\circ}C$. Polymer coating on NiTi wire surface decreased the surface defects such as scratch which was formed at severe machined surface. From the AFM results, the average surface roughness of non-coated and coated NiTi wire was 13.1 nm, and 224.5 nm, respectively. From convetional surface roughness test, the average surface roughness of non-coated and coated NiTi wire was $0.046{\mu}m$, and $0.718{\mu}m$, respectively.

  • Dielectric properties of $xBaTiO_3-(1-x)CoFe_2O_4$ composite materials have been investigated. Dielectric properties of $BaTiO_3$, $CoFe_2O_4$ and $0.5BaTiO_3-0.5CoFe_2O_4$ samples show frequency dependence, which is classified as relaxor behavior with different relaxing degree. The relaxor behaviors were described using the modified Curier-Weiss and Vogel-Fulcher laws. Among three above samples, the $BaTiO_3$ sample has highest relaxing degree. Photoluminescence spectral indicated defects, which might in turn control relaxing degree.

  • The isothermal forging design of a Ti-6Al-4V wing shape was performed by 3D FE simulation. The design focuses on near-net shape forming by the single stage. The process variables such as the die design, pre-form shape and size, ram speed and forging temperature were investigated. The main design priorities were to minimize forging loads and to distribute strain uniformly in a given forging condition. The FE simulation results for the final process design were compared with the isothermal forging tests. The instability of deformation was evaluated using a processing map based on the dynamic materials model(DMM), including flow stability criteria. Finally, a modified process design for producing a uniform Ti-6Al-4V wing product without forming defects was suggested.

  • Multilayered WC-Ti/suv $1-x/Al_{x}$ N coatings were deposited on AISI D2 steel using cathodic arc deposition (CAD) method. These coatings contain structural defects such as pores or droplets. Thus, the substrate is not completely isolated from the corrosive environment. The growth defects (pores, pinholes) in the coatings are detrimental to corrosion resistance of the coatings used in severe corrosion environments. The localized corrosion behavior of the coatings was studied in deaerated 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution using electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic polarization test) and surface analyses (GDOES, SEM, AES, TEM). The porosity was calculated from the result of potentiodynamic polarization test of the uncoated and coated specimens. The calculated porosity is higher in the $WC-Ti_{0.6}$ $Al_{0.4}$ N than others, which is closely related to the packing factor. The positive effects of greater packing factor act on inhibiting the passage of the corrosive electrolyte to the substrate and lowering the localized corrosion kinetics. From the electrochemical tests and surface analyses, the major corrosion mechanisms can be classified into two basic categories: localized corrosion and galvanic corrosion.
