Selective Carbonization and Nitridation of Titanium in (ZrTi)O2 Powders Synthesized by Copreciptation Method

  • Solid solutions of $(Zr/Ti)O_2$ were prepared in powder form by the coprecipitation technique. After mixing with carbon or exposing to nitrogen gas at elevated temperature, titanium cations selectively diffused out from the oxide compound to form titanium carbide (TiC) or titanium nitride (TiN), respectively. TiN formed strong interfacial contacts between the oxide grains. In contrast, TiC formed as small crystallites on oxide grains but did not bind the matrix grains together. TiN therefore played a role in strengthening the interparticle bonding, but TiC weakened the bonding between grains. Partial diffusion of titanium cations also led to nanolayered structure being formed between the oxide grains, which provided weak interfacial layers that fractured in a step-wise fashion.

  • A numerical model has been proposed for a diffusion flame reactor to manufacture ultrafine $TiO_2$ powders. The model equations such as mass balance equation, the 0th, 1st, and 2nd moment equations of aerosols were considered. The phenomena such as $TiCl_4$ reaction rate, $TiO_2$ nucleation rate and the coagulation of $TiO_2$ powders were included in the aerosol dynamic equation. It is found that the $TiO_2$ particle concentration becomes higher, as the inlet $TiCl_4$ concentration and the total gas flow rate increase, and also as the flame temperature decreases. The $TiO_2$ particle size increases, as the flame temperature and the inlet $TiCl_4$ concentration increase and the total gas flow rate decreases.

  • We prepared the nano-sized $TiO_2$ particles by the diffusion flame reactor and investigated the effects of several process variables on the generation and transport properties of $TiO_2$ particle. As the length from the tip of diffusion flame reactor increases, the size of $TiO_2$ particle increases by the coagulation between particles. The structure of $TiO_2$ particles prepared is almost found to be anatase. It was found that the $TiO_2$ particle size depends more largely on the change of reactor temperature than on the change of inlet $TiCl_4$ concentration.

  • $BaTiO_3$ fine particles were synthesized by hydrothermal method. $TiO_2$ and $Ba(OH)_2{\cdot}8H_2O$ were used as staring materials, and it was possible to synthesize $BaTiO_3$ fine particles in pure water by using excess $Ba(OH)_2{\cdot}8H_2O$. The shape of synthesized particles are irregular but near spherical, and the particle size depends on the temperature and Ba/Ti atomic ratio.

  • BaO-TiO$_2$계의 TiO$_2$-rich 조성영역에 대한 상평형 관계를 완전 고상 반응법을 통하여 재평가하였다. 출발 시료로는 이 계의 end-member인 BaO와 TiO$_2$(rutile)를 이용하였다. 각 시료들은 대기 중에서 800~120$0^{\circ}C$의 온도구간에서 선택적으로 열처리되었다. 열처리된 시편들은 상온까지 급냉 처리되었으며, 상 분석은 X-ray 회절 분석을 통하여 이루어졌다. 연구결과에서 BaTi$_2$O$_{5}$(1:2)상과 BaTi$_{5}$O$_{11}$(1:5)상이 저온에서의 고상 반응을 통해서도 쉽게 형성될 수 있음을 알 수 있었으며, 각 저온 상들의 불변 반응 온도를 열처리 온도에 따른 상 분석을 통하여 확인할 수 있었다.

  • The characteristics of interface layer and the effect of mole fraction of inlet gas mixture($B_2H_6/H_2/N_2/TiCl_4$) on the microstructure of Ti(B,N) films were studied by microwave plasma hot filament CVD process. Ti(B,N) films were deposited on a substrate(STD-61) to develop a high performance of resistance wear coating tool. Ti(B,N) films were obtained at a gas pressure of 1 torr, bias voltage of 300 V and substrate temperature of $480^{\circ}C$ in $B_2H_6/H_2/N_2/TiCl_4$gas system. It was found that TiN, $TiB_2$, TiB and hexagonal boron nitride(h-BN) phases exist in thin layer on the STD-61.

Oxidation Mechanism of TiCrN Coatings Ion-plated on Steel Substrate (강 기판위에 이온 플레이팅된 TiCrN 박막의 산화기구)

  • Coatings of TiCrN ion-plated on a steel substrate was oxidized at $800^{\circ}C$ in air, and their oxidation mechanism was presented. During oxidation, substrate elements and Ti and Cr in the coating always diffused outwardly to form the oxide scale. Simultaneously, oxygen from the atmosphere diffused inward1y to react with Ti and Cr to form $TiO_2$and $Cr_2$$O_3$, respectively. Also, the counter-diffusion of cations and oxygen resulted in some oxygen dissolution in the unoxidized TiCrN coating, and Fe dissolution in the oxide scale. When the Ti content in the coating was high, the $TiO_2$-forming tendency was strong, while when the Cr content was high, the $Cr_2$$O_3$-forming tendency was strong.

A Comparative Study on the Characteristics of TiN Films Deposited by Plasma-Assisted CVD, Ion Plating and Reactive Sputtering (플라즈마 화학증착법, 이온 플레이팅법 및 반응성 스퍼터링법에 의해 증착된 TiN 박막의 특성 비교 연구)

  • TiN films were deposited on high speed steels by plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD), cathode arc ion plating (CAIP) and reactive magnetron sputtering (RMS). The properties of the films deposited by the three different methods were compared. The preferred oriented plane of PACVD-TiN is (200) and those of CAIP-TiN and RMS-TiN are (111). PACVD-TiN shows a dome surface and a microstructure having small grains. CAIP-TiN shows the highest microhardness and the best adhesion strength of the three because it has a dense microstructure and an ill-defined interface. But is shows the greatest surface roughness due to the Ti droplet created by the arc. RMS-TiN shows a microstructure having large voids so that its properties in microhardness and adhesion are the worst of the three.
