One-dimensional rutile $TiO_2$ is an important inorganic compound with applicability in sensors, solar cells, and Li-based batteries. However, conventional synthesis methods for $TiO_2$ nanowires are complicated and entail risks of environmental contamination. In this work, we report the growth of $TiO_2$ nanowires on a Ti alloy powder (Ti-6wt%Al-4wt%V, Ti64) using simple thermal oxidation under a limited supply of $O_2$. The optimum condition for $TiO_2$ nanowire synthesis is studied for variables including temperature, time, and pressure. $TiO_2$ nanowires of ${\sim}5{\mu}m$ in length and 100 nm in thickness are richly synthesized under the optimum condition with single-crystalline rutile phases. The formation of $TiO_2$ nanowires is greatly influenced by synthesis temperature and pressure. The synthesized $TiO_2$ nanowires are characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM).

Ti-Al-N ($Ti_{75}$$Al_{25}$ N) and Ti-Al-Si-N ($Ti_{69}$$Al_{23}$$Si_{8}$N) coatings synthesized by a DC magnetron sputtering technique were studied comparatively with respect to phase characterization and high-temperature oxidation behavior. $Ti_{69}$$Al_{23}$$Si_{ 8}$N coating had a nanocomposite microstructure consisting of nanosized(Ti,Al,Si)N crystallites and amorphous $Si_3$$N_4$, with smooth surface morphology. Ti-Al-N coating of which surface $Al_2$$O_3$ layer formed during oxidation suppressed further oxidation. It was sufficiently stable against oxidation up to about $700^{\circ}C$. Ti-Al-Si-N coating showed better oxidation resistance because both surface Ab03 and near-surface $SiO_2$ layers suppressed further oxidation. XRD, GDOES, XPS, and scratch tests were performed.

In this study, ternary Ti-Mo-N and new quaternary Ti-Mo-Si-N coatings were synthesized on steel substrates(AISI D2) and Si wafers by a hybrid coating system of arc ion plating (AIP) using Ti target and d.c. magnetron sputtering technique using Mo and Si targets in $N_2/Ar$ gaseous mixture. Ternary Ti-Mo-N coatings were substitutional solid-solution of (Ti, Mo)N and showed maximum hardness of approximately 30 GPa at the Mo content of ${\sim}10$. %. The Ti-Mo-Si-N coating with the Si content of 8.8 at. % was a composite consisting of fine (Ti, Mo)N crystallites and amorphous $Si_3N_4$ phase. The hardness of the Ti-Mo-Si(8.8 at. %)-N coatings exhibited largely increased hardness value of ${\sim}48$ GPa due to the microstructural evolution to the fine composite microstructure and the refinement of (Ti, Mo)N crystallites. The average friction coefficient of the Ti-Mo-Si-N coatings largely decreased with increase of Si content. The microstructures of Ti-Mo-Si-N coatings were investigated with instrumental analyses of XRD, XPS, and HRTEM in this work.
The aim of this research is to evaluate the wear properties of (TiB+TiC) paticulate reinforced titanium matrix composites (TMCs) by in-situ synthesis. Different particle sizes (1500, $150{\mu}m$) and contents (0.94, 1.88 and 3.76 mass% for Ti, 1.98 and 3.96 mass% for the Ti6Al4V alloy) of boron carbide were added to pure titanium and to a Ti6Al4V alloy matrix during vacuum induction melting to provide 5, 10 and 20 vol.% (TiB+TiC) particulate reinforcement amounts. The wear behavior of the (TiB+TiC) particulate reinforced TMCs is described in detail with regard to the coefficient of friction, the hardness, and the degree of reinforcement fragmentation during sliding wear. The worn surfaces of each sliding wear condition are shown for the three types of wear studied here: transfer layer wear, particle cohesion wear and the development of abrasive areas. The fine reinforcements of TMCs were easily fragmented from the Ti matrix as compared to coarse reinforcements, and fragmented debris accelerated the decrease in the wear resistance.
Titanium nitride was synthesized by reacting Ti powder with nitrogen gas using SHS method. In this process, the effects of nitrogen pressure, dilution with TiN, or additiion of titanium hydride(TiH1.924) on the conversion of Ti to TiN were investigated. In particular, much effects were given to solve the problem of the conversion drop due to partial melting and subsequent sintering of Ti parciels, by controlling combustion temperature and combustion wave velocity via mixing Ti powder with TiN or/and TiH1.924. For the diluted titanium powders with TiN, the conversion close to 100% was resulted when the nitrogen pressure was over 8atm and with diluent content of 60wt%, and the self-propagating reaction was not sustained when the diluent content was higher than 60wt%. For samples mixed to be 55wt% in Ti component in the mixture of Ti, TiH1.924, and 45% TiN, the conversion was closed to 100% when the amount of titanium hydride added was over 7wt% and the nitrogen pressure was higher than 5atm. The combustion reaction, however, was not sustained when titanium hydride added was more than 10wt%.
Fundamental studies of microstructural changes and high temperature deformation of titanium aluminide (TiAl) were conducted from the view point of the effect of Al content in order to develop the manufacturing process of TiAl. Microstructures in an as cast state consisted mainly of lamellar structure irrespective of Al content. By homogenization at 1473 K, the microstructures of Ti-49Al and Ti-51Al were transformed into an equiaxial structure which was composed of ${\gamma}$-TiAl, while the lamellar structure that was observed in Ti-46Al and Ti-47Al was much more stable. We found that the reduction of Al content suppressed the formation of equiaxial grains and resulted in a microstructure of only a lamellar structure. On Ti-49Al and Ti-51Al, dynamic recrystallization occurred during high temperature deformation, and the microstructure was transformed into a fine equiaxial one, while the microstructures of Ti-46Al and Ti-47Al contained few recrystallized grains and consisted mainly of a deformed lamellar structure. We observed that on the low-Al alloys the lamellar structure under hard mode deformation conditions deformed as kink observed B2-NiAl. High temperature deformation characteristics of TiAl were strongly affected by Al content. An increase of Al content resulted in a decrease of peak stress and activation energy for plastic deformation and an increase of the recrystallization ratio in TiAl.

In this study, low temperature sintering property of (1-x)$TiTe_{3}O_{8}-xMgTiO_{3}$ ceramics were investigated for LTCC application which enable to cofiring with Ag electrode. $TiTe_{3}O_{8}$ mixed with $MgTiO_3$ to improve the temperature property. In the X-ray diffraction patterns, the columbite structure of $TiTe_{3}O_{8}$ phase and ilmenite structure of $MgTiO_3$ phase were coexisted in all specimens. The bulk densities and dielectric constants were decreased with increasing of $MgTiO_3$. However, the quality factors were increased with $MgTiO_3$ addition. Also, TCRF was shifted to negative(-) direction. Microwave dielectric properties of (1-x)$TiTe_{3}O_{8}-xMgTiO_{3}$ ceramics had similar tendency with calculated value by the mixing rule. The dielectric constant, quality factor and TCRF of $05TiTe_{3}O_{8}-0.5MgTiO_{3}$ ceramics sintered at $830^{\circ}C$ for 3h. were 26.19, 43,290GHz and $-3.9ppm/^{\circ}C$, respectively.

Stability and activity of boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode are key factors for water treatment. In this study, BDD electrodes were prepared on various substrates such as Nb, Si, Ti, and $TiN_x/Ti$ by hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) method. BDD/Ti film showed the delamination between BDD and Ti substrate due to the formation of TiC layer caused by diffusion of carbon. On the other hand, $BDD/TiN_x/Ti$ showed remarkably improved stability, compared to BDD/Ti. It was confirmed that $TiN_x$ intermediate layer act as barrier layer for diffusion of carbon. High potential window of 2.8 eV was maintained on the $BDD/TiN_x/Ti$ electrode and, better wastewater treatment capability and longer electrode working life than BDD/Nb, BDD/Si and BDD/Ti were obtained.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of operational parameters such as rotation speed and vibrating milling time for the fabrication of photocatalytic $TiO_2$ thin film using aerosol deposition methods. $TiO_2$ powders produced in the range of 1,000-3,000 rpm of rotation speed of centrifugal separator are ineffective on the fabrication of $TiO_2$ thin film by aerosol deposition due to the problem of nozzle powder jam. $TiO_2$ powders controlled by vibrating milling had about 420 nm of average diameter after 2 hr of vibrating milling time. The result of XRD analysis indicated that $TiO_2$ powders had a anatase phase. Vibrating milling methods was considered to be an effective pre-treatment process for $TiO_2$ powder control. Consequently $TiO_2$ photocatalytic thin film with dispersion of anatase crystallites controled by vibrating milling was successfully fabricated by aerosol deposition. The permeation flux of $TiO_2$ photocatalytic thin film with the immobilized $TiO_2$ powder was higher than that of suspended $TiO_2$ powder. Therefore, $TiO_2$ photocatalytic thin film promises to be one of the effective methods for enhancing filtration performance for the treatment of organic pollutants.
[ $(Pb_{1.1},La_{0.08})(Zr_{0.65}.Ti_{0.35})O_3$ ] thin films on the $Pt/Ti/SiO_2/Si$, $TiO_2(interlayer)/Pt/Ti/SiO_2/Si$ substrate were fabricated by the R.F. magnetron-sputtering method and considered their characteristics depending on $TiO_2$ interlayer. Changing the deposition conditions of $TiO_2$ interlayer, we obtained $TiO_2$ anatase single phase and rutile single phase. PLZT was deposited on these substrates and analyzed by x-ray diffraction(XRD) for there crystallinity and orientation. To investigate $PLZT-TiO_2$, $TiO_2-Pt$ interface, glow discharge spectrometer(GDS) analysis was carried out and we performed electrical measurements for dielectric properties of PLZT thin films. The PLZT thin film on $TiO_2$ anatase interlayer was found to have (110)-preferred orientation and 12.6 ${\mu}C/cm^2$ remaining polarization value.
