  • To develop an ionic equilibria model applicable to the sulfuric acid leaching solutions of zinc oxide ore, the method of the Pitzer equation and that of the Vasil'ev equation were compared. As the ionic strength of the solution increased to 9 m, the results of ionic equilibria by the Pitzer equation were more accurate than those by Vasil'ev. To simulate the sulfuric acid leaching solutions of zinc oxide ore, the mixed solutions with the various composition of $ZnSO_4-Fe_2(SO_4)_3-Na_2SO_4-H_2SO_4-NaOH-H_2O$ were prepared. The pH values calculated in this study agreed well with those measured at $25^{\circ}C$.

  • Results from study on physiological responses to $SO_2$ of Quercus spp. selected for restoration of vegetation damaged by air pollution in the field study were as follows. Tolerance of Quercus aliena, Q. acutissima and Q. mongolica used in this study to $SO_2$ was higher in that order and tolerance of these plants to $SO_2$ was high comparatively among trees composing of major forest vegetation of Korea including natural forests and plantations. Stomatal resistance of these plants was increased after exposure to $SO_2$ and range of increase was different among species. From discrepancy between order of tolerance to $SO_2$ and range of increase in stomatal resistance, we were estimated that resistance mechanisms of Quercus spp. were different among species as mechanism originated in avoidance and resistance, respectively. Water potential of plant leaves reduced after exposure to $SO_2$, degree of reduction accorded with order of tolerance to $SO_2$. Reduction of water potential of plants after exposure to $SO_2$ was initiated before appearance of visible damage in plant leaves and water potential of plants exposed to $SO_2$ of low concentration, in which plants were not showed viaible damage was also reduced.

  • To select $SO_2$-resistant tree species, leaf disks of 6mm in diameter, cut from the leaves of 6 species (Wistaria floribunda, Magnolia obovata, Rosa multiflora, Liriodendron tulipifera, Robinia pseudo-acacia and Acer palmatum) were floated on 25ml of testing medium and placed on laboratory under fluorescent lamp (1,500 Lux) for 20 hours. Chlorophyll content and acidity of the testing medium were measured. Testing medium was prepared by diluting $H_2SO_4$, $H_2SO_3$ and $Na_2SO_4$ with distilled water for various stoichiometric $SO_2$ concentrations, 0, 25, 50, 100 and 250 ppm. Total chlorophyll content was more decreased after treatment than before treatment, and was decreased more severely in $H_2SO_3$ sources, followed by $H_2SO_4$ and $Na_2SO_4$, sources. Decreasing rate of total chlorophyll content was generally large in Acer palmatum. Magnolia obovata and Wistaria floribunda, and was relatively small in Rosa multiflora, Liriodendron tulipifera and Robinia pseudo-acacia. Decreasing rate of chlorophyll content may be useful index for judging susceptifility of the leaf to $SO_2$. The acidity of the testing medium was generally decreased after treatment, and it means that cell leakage was occurred during treatment. The differences in medium acidity between before and after treatment may be poot index for susceptibility of the leaf to $SO_2$ owing to the difference among tree species in development of leaf mesophyll, acidity maintaining mechanism and butter capacity of the leaf tissue.

  • The feasibility of ionic liquid as a novel absorbent of $SO_2$ for the separation of $SO_2$ from $SO_2/O_2$ mixture in the thermochemical IS(Iodine-Sulfur) cycle was investigated. 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methylsulfate ([DMIm]$MeSO_4$) had shown twenty five times higher solubility of $SO_2$ than that of $O_2$. The dependence of $SO_2$ solubility by [DMIm]$MeSO_4$ on temperature and $SO_2$ partial pressure was examined, which confirmed the possibility of temperature and pressure swing for the separation process. Through cyclic absorption and desorption with temperature swing the stability of [DMIm]$MeSO_4$ in the separation process was also demonstrated. As a result of the experiments carried out, $SO_2$ separation from $SO_2/O_2$ mixture with ionic liquid([DMIm]$MeSO_4$) can be applied to the thermochemical IS cycle.

Particle Formation and Growth in Dielectric Barrier Discharge - Photocatalysts Hybrid Process for SO2 Removal (SO2 제거를 위한 유전체 장벽 방전 - 광촉매 복합 공정에서의 입자 형성과 성장)

  • We analyzed the effects of several process variables on the $SO_2$ removal and particle growth by the dielectric barrier discharge - photocatalysts hybrid process. In this process, $SO_2$ was converted into the ammonium sulfate ($(NH_4)_2SO_4$) particles. The size and crystallinity of ammonium sulfate particles were examined by using TEM and XRD analysis. The dielectric barrier discharge reactor consisted of two zones: the first is for plasma generation and the second is for ammonium sulfate particles formation and growth. The first zone of reactor was filled with glass beads as a dielectric material. To enhance $SO_2$ removal process, the $TiO_2$ photocatalysts were coated on glass beads by dip-coating method. As the voltage applied to the plasma reactor or the pulse frequency of applied voltage increases, the $SO_2$ removal efficiency increases. Also as the initial concentration of $SO_2$ decreases or as the residence time increases, the $SO_2$ removal efficiency increases. $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ particles continue to grow by particle coagulation and surface reaction, moving inside the reactor. Larger particles in site are produced according to the increase of residence time or $SO_2$ concentrations.

$SO_2/O_2$ Separation Process with EMIm[$EtSO_4$] in SI Cycle for the Hydrogen Production by Water Splitting (물분해 수소제조를 위한 SI cycle에서의 EMIm[$EtSO_4$]를 이용한 $SO_2/O_2$ 분리공정)

  • $SO_2$ has been absorbed and separated selectively by an ionic liquid from $SO_2/O_2$ mixture decomposed from sulfuric acid during the thermochemical SI cycle for the water splitting. In order to design and operate high pressure $SO_2/O_2$ separation system, the solubility of $SO_2$ in [EMIm]$EtSO_4$ (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate) has been measured by Magnetic Suspension Balance at high pressure and temperature. Based on the measured solubility, a pressurized separation system was set up and operated. 194 L/h of $SO_2$($SO_2:O_2$=0.65:1) has been separated with 99.85% of $O_2$ at the vent of absorption tower, which is 22.7% of the theoretically ideal capacity of the system. This discrepancy results from the reduced contact between the gaseous $SO_2$ and the ionic liquid. Increased $SO_2$ supply, scale-up of the absorption column, and a faster ionic liquid circulation speed were suggested to improve the separation capacity.

$SO_2$가 흰쥐 기관의 Glycoconjugates에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

  • $SO_2$ 폭로군의 기관 상피층의 섬모에서 DBA 및 SBA는 50ppm 이하 $SO_2$ 폭로군에서는 대조군에 비해 증가하였으며 sWGA 및 UEA-1은 대부분의 $SO_2$ 폭로군에서 대조군에 비해 증가하였다. 섬모세포에서 LCA 및 Con A는 100ppm 및 200ppm $SO_2$ 폭로군에서 대조군에 비해 약간 증가하였다. 배상세포에서는 대부분의 렉틴의 반응성이 50ppm 이하의 $SO_2$ 폭로군에서는 증가하였다가 100ppm 및 200 ppm $SO_2$ 폭로군에서는 현저히 감소하였다. 장액선포에서는 LCA 및 Con A는 모든 $SO_2$ 폭로군에서 대조군보다 증가하는 경향을 보였으며 점액선포에서는 대조군에서 관찰되지 않았던 RCA-1은 50ppm 및 100ppm $SO_2$ 폭로군의 일부 선포에서 증가하였다. 위의 결과로 보아 $SO_2$는 기관에 심대한 병리조직학적 변화뿐만 아니라 glycoconjugates대사에 심대한 영향을 미쳐 심한 병변을 야기시킴을 알 수 있었다. 전반적으로 $SO_2$의 호흡기 영향은 고농도로 갈수록 심한 영향을 나타내었다. 저농도에서도 폭로 시간이 길어짐에 따라 나타나는 $SO_2$의 영향이 고농도와 유사한 경향을 나타내며 또한 모든 $SO_2$의 농도를 비교해보면 폭로 시간이 길어질수록 그 영향이 더 심하게 나타났다.

  • In this study, the behaviour of $SO_2$ and $NO_2$ adsorption on aminated ultrafine fibrous PP-g-AAc ion exchanger was investigated, The amount of adsorbed $SO_2$ increased with increasing the initial concentration of $SO_2$. The adsorption breakthrough time in the low concentration of $SO_2$ was faster than high concentration. The adsorption breakthrough occurred within 60 min. Approximately 80% of $SO_2$ was adsorbed below 100 ppm $SO_2$ and 90% of $SO_2$ over 100 ppm $SO_2$ respectively. The selective adsorption rate for $NO_2$ was lower than that of $SO_2$. The adsorption rate for $SO_2$ was decreased with increasing flow rate and that of $NO_2$ was 60%. The breakthrough occurred within 60 min. The adsorption rate for $SO_2$ was 92% in the 250 mL/g water content. Isotherm adsorption model for $SO_2$ was close to the Langmuir rather than Freundlich model.

  • $SO_2$ injury was higher in the foliage of several ornamental plants when treated in July than in August or September. Spray of daminozide at 2,500 ppm 7 days before $SO_2$ fumigation had no effect on $SO_2$ injury whereas MH pretreatment increased $SO_2$ injury in Hibiscus syriacus.

  • In this study an investigation was made to determine optimum ratio between $SO_3$, MgO and $K_2O$ that maximizes $C_2S$ formation in Clinkering reaction Using response surface analysis method. It was proved that 1) Residual $K_2O$ int he clinker should be converted to $K_2SO_4$ because $K_2SO_4$ has less effect on the burnability than $K_2O$, 2) Optimum ratio if $SO_3$/K2O is 1.5, 3) Optimun balance between $CaSO_4$ and MgO is to be adjusted to such a level that w/o SO3=0.7(w/o MgO-2).4) In case of lack of $K_2O$ free CaO was minimized when $K_2SO_4$=2.3w/o and MgO=1.5w/o but if remaining $K_2O$ was 2w/o free CaI was minimized in the level that $K_2SO_4$=2.3w/o and MgO =1.5 w/o but if remaining $K_2O$ was 2 w/o free CaO was minimized in the level that $K_2SO_4$=4.5w/o and MgO =3.0 w/o.
