Polyimide hollow fiber membrane modules were prepared in order to investigate the process of multi stage gas separation. The modules performance was carried out using 50/50 of $N_2/SF_6$ mixed gas. The membrane modules has been tested for measuring gas flow rate and concentration under various stage cut at 0.5 MPa. The membrane modules showed a high recovery ratio at the same stage cut as $N_2/SF_6$ selectivity increased. Two stage process was fulfilled for improving $SF_6$ recovery ratio and $SF_6$ concentration. Eventually, two stage process showed higher performance of $SF_6$ recovery ratio and concentration ($SF_6$ recovery ratio = 95%, $SF_6$ conc. = 98%).
This study describes the performance of PSF and PC membranes for separation and recovery of $SF_6$ from gas mixtures (10% $SF_6$/70% $N_2$/19% $O_2$/1% $CF_4$) containing low concentration of $SF_6$. The $SF_6$ concentration in retentate, recovery efficiency and selectivity of mixed gases were measured as a function of retentate flow rate and temperature. The concentration of $SF_6$ in the gas recovered from PSF and PC membrane respectively decreased with increase of retentate flow rate and increased with increase of temperature. The values of $SF_6$ concentration in retentate of PSF membrane were higher than those of PC membrane at constant experimental conditions. The maximum value of recovery efficiency of PSF and PC membranes are 95.9% and 67.8%, respectively, under 298.15 K and 150 cc/min of retentate flow rate. With the exception of $CF_4/SF_6$, the real selectivities of $N_2/SF_6$ and $O_2/SF_6$ at PSF membrane were higher than those of PC membrane.
$SF_6$ gas is well known as a global warming gas. Global warming potential of $SF_6$ gas is 22,000 times higher than that of $CO_2$. Recycling of $SF_6$ gas is an essential technology for the sake of the environment and the economy. The recovery processes of $SF_6$ gas studied in this work were liquefaction, distillation, and crystallization processes because these processes were thought to be easily carried to the fields for recycling waste $SF_6$ gas. The processes were simulated and optimized using Aspen plus. The optimization problems were formulated to minimize energy consumption with satisfying product specification and desired recovery. The performance of the processes was compared based on the optimization results. Effects of major process variables on the recovery performance were investigated and optimal operation guide for changing product specification and product recovery was provided.

In this paper, a method for analyzing the thermal recovery characteristics of the nozzle of gas circuit breaker was described. In order to obtain thermal recovery characteristics, the transient simulation of SF6 arc plasma within the nozzle was carried out. In particular, the nozzle ablation was taken into account by simultaneously solving the PTFE concentration equation with the governing equations such as continuity, momentum and energy equation. After that, post arc current calculation was performed with the rate of rise of recovery voltage changed. From the calculated post arc current, it was possible to suggest the thermal recovery characteristics of the nozzle of gas circuit breaker.

$SF_6$ (Sulfur hexafluoride) possesses high GWP (Global Warming Potential) as sepcified by the IPCC (Intergonvernmental Panel of Climate Change). Recently, the recovery-separtion of $SF_6$ research area, including permeation properties studies using various membrane's materials and the practical operation of recovery-separtion using membrane of waste $SF_6$ gas is in the initial state. The separation efficiency of a single $SF_6$ and waste $SF_6$ mixture was evaluated using a PSF (polysulfone), PC (tetra-bromo polycarbonate) and PI (polyimide) hollow fiber membranes. According to the results of single gases permeation properties, PI membrane has the highest permselectivity of $N_2$ gas in $N_2/SF_6$ gas. Under the condition of P=0.5 MPa, the highest concentration of recovered $SF_6$ is 95.6 vol % in the separation experiment of $SF_6/N_2$ mixture gas by PC membrane. Under the operation pressure of P=0.3 MPa at a fixed retentate flow rate fixed of 150 cc/min, the maximum recovery efficiency of $SF_6$ is up to 97.8% by PSF membrane. From the results above, it is thought that the separation and recovery technique of $SF_6$ gas using membrane will be used as the representative eco-technology in the $SF_6$ gas treatment in the future.
After $SF_6$, which is being used in power equipment as an insulating material, is classified as one of the 6 major greenhouse gases, the maintenance and the refinement of used $SF_6$ started to get attention. In regard to this, KEPCO Research Institute (KEPRI) is developing $SF_6$ recovery and refinement technology starting with establishing a comprehensive $SF_6$ analysis system. With the analysis system, qualitative and quantitative analyses of the purity and the impurities of $SF_6$ before and after recovery, and before and after refinement have been carried out. The analysis system is comprised of GC-DID (Gas Chromatograph -Discharge Ionization Detector) for trace impurities analysis, GC-TCD (Thermal Conductivity Detector) for analyses of $SF_6$ purity and major impurities concentration from several hundred ppm up to percent range, GC-MSD (Mass Selective Detector) for analyses of impurities not included in standard gas, FT-IR (Fourier Transform-Infrared) Spectrometer for analysis of HF and $SO_2$, and moisture analyzer for analysis of moisture below 100 ppm. With this analysis system, complete analysis method of $SF_6$ has been established. This analysis system is being used in the maintenance of power equipment and the development of $SF_6$ recovery and refinement technologies. In this paper, the analysis results of four samples - gas and liquid phase $SF_6$ samples from a $SF_6$ refinement system before and after refinement are presented.
Because sulfur hexafluoride(SF6) is classified as one of the six major greenhouse gases, SF6 handling in power plant such as recovery, purification, and reuse is considered to be important. KEPCO has focused to develop the advanced recovery and purification technology of SF6 reuse. SF6 analysis includes the on-site analyses and on-line analyzer; i.e., (1) on-site analysis has an error rate of ±0.5% and (2) on-line analysis has an error rate of ±0.1%, which is possible to adjust operating conditions and to make the work more conveniently by analyzing SF6 concentration before and after purification step. This paper presents an online analysis method in the SF6 purification and reuse system. In addition, the analysis results and quality guarantees for each section of the analysis system were presented.

Sulfur hexafloride($SF_6$) emission to atmosphere is lower than $CO_2$, but $SF_6$ GWP is 22,800 times lager than $CO_2$. In recent years as restriction of $non-CO_2$ gas has been greatly reinforced, development of environment-friendly technology with $SF_6$ removal is becoming to main issue. This study shows that $SF_6$ used insulator electrical equipment has emission characteristics during the each phase(maintenance, use, diposal), and analyzed $SF_6$ emission reduction technology related phase. The major technology applies maintenance and disposal step is that improvment of gas recovery rate($85{\rightarrow}99%$), manufacturing catalysts, internal inspection of circuit breaker using endoscopy. Using those technolgies can reduce $SF_6$ emission in atmosphere.
Interruption tests were conducted using the same circuit breaker for an initial pressure of SF6 0.5 MPa (gauge pressure) and CO2 mixture 1.0 MPa, 0.8 MPa, and 0.6 MPa. The pressure-rises in the compression and thermal expansion chambers were measured for verifying the computational results using a simplified synthetic test facility. Further, the possibility of the CO2 mixture substituting SF6 gas was confirmed. Moreover, in view of the thermal recovery capability, it has also been confirmed that the pressure of the CO2 mixture can be reduced almost to the same value as that of the SF6 gas by optimizing the design parameters of the interrupter.

Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) uses large amount of SF6, one of the potent greenhouse gases, in electric equipment for electrical insulation. KEPCO is developing SF6 recovery and purification technology to minimize the release of SF6 into the environment, to secure certified emission reduction, and to save purchase cost of new SF6 by reusing the refined SF6. A prototype SF6 purification system using cryogenic solidification technology has been built in demonstration scale. To evaluate the feasibility of the commercialization, the system has been operated to purify large amount of used SF6 in a long-term operation and the performance has been economically evaluated. The system was stable enough for commercial operation such that it was able to purify 5.4 tons of used SF6 from power transmission equipment in 2-month operation. Over 99% of the SF6 was recovered from the used gas and the purity of the purified gas was over 99.7 vol%. The operation cost, which is the cost of refrigerant (liquid nitrogen), electricity and labor, per kilogram of purified SF6 was 6,526 KRW. Considering the price of new SF6 in Korea is about 15,000 KRW per kilogram this year, about 56% of the purchase cost can be saved.
