Recovery of Yttrium from the Sludge Generated in Recycling Process of the Obsolete CRT (폐CRT의 재활용 공정에서 발생한 슬러지로부터 Y의 회수)

  • A study on the recovery of yttrium was conducted using the phosphor sludges generated in the recycling process of obsolete CRTs. Yttrium was leached by HCl and $HNO _3$. The leaching efficiency of yttrium was extensively investigated in terms of acid concentration, leaching temperature and time, and pulp density. Yttrium and lead was recovered from leaching solutions also by precipitation method. The leaching behavior of yttrium was similar in both acids. The leaching efficiency of yttrium for both acids increased with time at the conditions of 3.0M, $90^{\circ}C$, and 280 g/L of pulp density. After 40 minutes, it was saturated to 93% and 90% for HCl and HNO$_3$respectively. Yttrium was recovered from leaching acid solution by the addition of $H_2$$C_2$$O_4$while lead was removed as $PbSO_4$by $Na_2$ $SO_4$.

Sol-Gel Template Synthesis and Phase Transitions of $PbZrO_3$ Nanotubes ($PbZrO_3$ 나노튜브의 졸-겔 형판 합성과 상전이)

  • We report the phase transition temperatures of the $PbZrO_3$ perovskite nanotubes made by sol-gel template synthesis. The lead zirconate($PbZrO{_3}$) nanotubes were prepared with a chelate sol-gel of zirconium tetrabutoxide($Zr(OBu){_4}$) and leadacetate($Pb(OAc){_2}-3H_2O$). $Whatman^(r)$ anodisc membranes, with a 200nm pore size, served as the template. After removing the template in the 6M-NaOH solution, the $PbZrO{_3}$ nanotubes so far have shown an anomalous transition temperature, $123.6^{\circ}C$ as measured by DSC with a small particle size, 15.4nm determined by X-ray analysis with the aid of Scherrer's equation.

A Study and Analysis for Chemical Components both Air and Total Suspended Particulates at Industrial Region (대기와 부유분진중 화학 성분의 분석에 대한 비교 연구)

  • This study was performed at Sa-Sang Industrial area in Pusan City. To measure the total suspended particulates(T.S.P) and $SO_3$ following places was selected industrial area, down town, residentail area. T.S.P was collected on glass filters by High-Volume Air Sampler, $SO_3$ was measured by PbO2 Candle method. The collected T.S.P was analyzed for various anlon(for example, $NO_3$, $SO_4$, $PO_4$, F, Cl) by ion Chromatography, and Pb by Inductively Coupled Plasma.

Chemical pretreatment for anaerobic treatment of abandoned mine drainage (폐광산폐수의 혐기성 처리를 위한 화학적 전처리)

  • This research was carried out to investigate chemical pretreatment using lime and limestone in treating abandoned mine drainage with anaerobic treatment. If treating lime with abandoned mine drainage, after 2day, pH was increased to 5.6, and $SO_4^{2-}$, Fe, Al, Pb and Mn were removed 5.7%, 63%, 57, 45% and 28%, respectively. It was estimated that lime dosage was 2,000mg/L for increasing to pH 7. If treating limestone with abandoned mine drainage, after 2day, pH was increased to 3.67, and $SO_4^{2-}$, Fe, Al, Pb and Mn were removed 4.7%, 26%, 22% 18% and 8%, respectively. It could be showed that limestone did slowly react with temperature increasing. If treating anaerobic limestone packing column with abandoned mine drainage, for experimental period, average pH was 4.51, and average $SO_4^{2-}$, Fe, Al, Pb and Mn were removed 4.5%, 15.3%, 20.1%, 23.7% and 5.87%, respectively. So, it would not be suitable for abandoned mine drainage. But if utilizing limestone as pretreatment process for treating abandoned mine drainage with SRB, because it did initally neutralize abandoned mine drainage, it could forward to stabilize system.

Oxidative Coupling Reaction of Methane (메탄의 산화성 짝지음 반응에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to find a catalyst system which has high conversion and selectivity for the oxidative coupling of methane to produce ethane and ethylene. Various catalysts were tested in a fixed bed reactor ar $750^{\circ}C$, 1 atm, and the feed ratio($CH_4/O_2$) of 2/1. Under the reaction condition, 10wt%$PbSO_4/MgO$ catalyst showed the highest catalytic activity : methane conversion, $C_2$ selectivity and yield were 50, 40 and 20%, respectively. Catalysts containing sulfate compounds, 10wt%$PbSO_4/MgO$, 10wt%$MgSO_4/MgO$ and $Na_2SO_4/MgO$ revealed a moderate methane conversions such as 38, 50 and 50%, respectively and low $C_2$ selectivities such as 18, 5 and 9%, respectively. Catalysts containing carbonate compounds, 10wt%$PbCO_3/MgO$, 10wt%$Li_2CO_3/MgO$ and $NaCO_3/MgO$, also showed a moderate methane conversions such as 64, 44 and 51%, respectively and low $C_2$ selectivities such as 5, 6 and 2%, respectively. With the existence of chlorine and mercury, $C_2$ selectivity was decreased.

Effects of Curing Conditions on the Chemical Compositions of Positive Plate for Lead Acid Battery Plates (납축전지 극판의 숙성 조건이 양극판의 화학적 조성에 미치는 영향)

  • Generally, it has been known that positive plate efficiency is the most influential effect on the initial current capacity of lead acid battery. Thus, in this study, we have investigated the curing effect of the positive plate, which is one of the important lead acid battery processes. The curing process of the positive plate is performed either with the separation of each plate with 1mm gap or with no gap of plate. As a result, when there is no interval between each plate, the higher temperature current happened than expected, resulting in the changes in the initial current efficiency of the lead acid battery. The chemical composition and crystal structure of a material coated on the positive plate were identified with XRD and SEM. It was resulted that were only there not a lot of 4BS (tetrabasic-lead sulfate, $4PbO{\cdot}PbSO_4)$ on the plate in case of curing of plates without interval, but a large quantity of $Pb_3O_4$ also formed on the surface. On the other hand, it was observed that 3BS (tribasic-lead sulface, $3PbO{\cdot}PbSO_4{\cdot}H_2O)$ was the main product on the plate in case of typical curing process with some interval. From the initial current capacity test, the positive plate having 3BS was approximately 40% higher in initial current capacity than that having 4BS. It was concluded that 4BS and $Pb_3O_4$ on the plate surface were harmful to the initial current capacity of lead acid battery.

Heavy Metals in Ambient Air at Shinchon Area in Seoul (도시 대기중 중금속에 관한 연구 -서울시 신촌지역을 중심으로-)

  • In order to investigate the character of air pollution by heavy metals and to elucidate the possible sources in Seoul city, this study was performed to measure the concentrations of heavy metals of total suspended particulate and air pollutants such as $SO_2, NO_2, CO, CH_4$, Non-methane hydrocarbon, ozone at the residential-traffic area (shinchon dong) in January and February, 1986. The results are as follows: 1. $SO_2$ and TSP concentration were 135ppb and 167 $\mug/m^3$ in average, respectively. 2. While concentrations of heavy metals such as Fe, Cu, Pb in the ambient air seems gradually decreasing annually, Ni compound has been shown the tendency of increasing. 3. Among heavy metals in TSP analysed, the iron was detected at the highest level, 0.905% and the cadimium was the lowest 0.004% in average, respectively. 4. V, Fe and Zn compounds in air were observed to be highly correlated with their correlation coefficients(r) higher than 0.7. Pb compound was highly correlated to the levels of Zn and Fe, however relatively less correlated to V compound. 5. Among concentrations of heavy metals in the particulates, V and Ni compounds were highly correlated with coefficient(r) of 0.8587; the cause might be imagined by the fact of releasing from combustion of fuel oil. Fe, Pb and Zn compounds were highly correlated $SO_2$ concentration. It might be explained that they were released by combustion of coal. 6. The level of $SO_2$ was highly correlated to most of heavy metals: especially correlation coefficient(r) to Pb compound was 0.9081. Pb compound was also highly correlated to NO, CO and TSP. TSP showed higher correlation to Pb and Cd compounds than to V and Ni compounds. It might be assumed that particulate was mainly produced by combusting coal from space heating and by exhausting gasoline and diesel oil from transportation rather than by burning fuel oil.

Effects of pH and the Existence of CO2 Gas on the Silica Surface Characteristics at Silica/Pb(II) Solution Interface (CO2 가스의 존재 여부와 용액의 pH가 Silica/Pb(II) 용액 계면에서 Silica 표면의 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of the existence of $CO_2$ gas and pH on the silica surface characteristics at silica/Pb(II) and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS, $C_{12}H_{25}SO_3Na$) solution interface were studied. The hydrophobic characteristics of silica surface was delineated by contact angle measurement and surface force measurement using atomic force microscopy (AFM). In $CO_2$ free condition provided by purging $N_2$ gas, the contact angle of fused silica surface in $10^{-4}M$ Pb(II) and SDS solution increased greatly up to $90^{\circ}$ compared with $40^{\circ}$ in atmospheric condition. It was due to the precipitation of $PbCO_3$ in atmospheric condition. In $CO_2$ free condition the change of contact angle and adhesion force ($F_{ad}$) in AFM, affected by pH change, was similar to the distribution of $PbOH^+$ ion in speciation diagram corresponding to $10^{-4}M$ total Pb(II). Therefore, it was convinced that the $PbOH^+$ ion among Pb(II) species would be the main adsorbing type on silica surface. Both of contact angle measurement and surface force measurement using AFM showed that the Pb only treatment made the silica surface hydrophobic. However, it could not be explained theoretically by current knowledge, and required further study in atomic level to solve the problem.

  • A column test was conducted to find out the effect of application of slaked lime, calcium sulfate, calcium superphosphate, and phosphoric acid on the solubility of lead in soil. The soil was adjusted to 310.8 ppm concentration of Pb and applied with amounts of calcium equivalent to 600, 1000, 2000 ppm as slaked lime; sulfate 144, 288, 432 ppm as calcium sulfate; phosphate 95, 190, 285 ppm as calcium superphosphate and phosphoric acid, respectively. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The increasing application of improvement agents reduced the amounts of water soluble Pb in soil. Phosphoric acid was the most effect among to the treatments. 2. The slaked lime treatment has the highest pH of soil and the lowest at the phosphoric acid one. The soil Eh has a reverse tendency the soil pH. 3. Water soluble Ca, $PO_4$ and $SO_4$ contents increased with increasing application amounts of improvement agents in soil. 4. $1N-NH_4$ OAC soluble Pb content in soil was a decreasing tendency in the order of calcium superphosphate, phosphoric acid, slaked lime, calcium sulfate and control after experiment.

  • Heavy metal adsorption by microbial cells is an alternative to conventional methods of heavy metal removal and recovery from metal-bearing wastewater The waste Sac-chuomyces cerevisiae is an inexpensive, relatively available source of biomass for heavy metal biosorption. Biosorption was investigated by free and immobilized-S. cerevisiae. The order of biosorption capacity was Pb>Cu>Cd with batch system. The biosorption parameters had been determined for Pb with free , cells according to the Freundlich and Langmuir model. It was found that the data fitted reasonably well to the Freundlich model. The selective uptake of immobilized-S. cerevisiae was observed when all the metal ions were dissolved in a mixed metals solution(Pb, Cu, Cr and Cd). The biosorption of mixed metals solution by immobilized-cell was studied in packed bed reactor. The Pb uptake was Investigated in particular, as it represents one of the most widely distributed heavy metals in water. We also tested the desorption of Pb from immobilized-cell by us- ing HCI, $H_2SO_4$ and EDTA.
