  • PM10 and PM2.5 samples were collected at the 1100 site of Mt. Halla in Jeju Island during 2011~2012, and their ionic and elemental species were analyzed, in order to investigate the characteristics of emission sources as well as aerosol compositions. The mass concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 were 22.0±13.1 µg/m3 and 11.3±6.1 µg/m3, respectively, showing 2.4~2.6 times lower than those of the capital city area of Korea. The composition ratios of major secondary pollutants (nss-SO42−, NH4+, and NO3) were the highest as 85.5 % for PM10 and 91.3 % for PM2.5, and followed by the order of marine (Na+, Cl, and Mg2+), organic acid (HCOO and CH3COO), and soil (nss-Ca2+) sources. Among the elemental species in PM10, soil-originated components (Al, Fe, and Ca) were consisted of 50.9 %, which was higher proportion than marine and anthropogenic elements. The acidification of the fine particulate matters was found to be influenced mostly by sulfuric and nitric acids, and these acids were mainly neutralized by calcium carbonate in PM10 and by ammonia in PM2.5. The clustered back trajectories showed that 47 % of total air mass inflows was from the China, and the concentrations of NO3 and nss-Ca2+ were especially high corresponding to the inflows.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the microbiological contamination levels of Dutch coffee products marketed in Korea. The temperature conditions during distribution and storage were also considered in this experiment. Retailed Dutch coffee were purchased from regional cafes, that is, these were self-blended by the cafes, and the marketed products were purchased from department stores and from Internet sites. The 21 samples were blended in a coffee house and 9 were obtained from department stores or were delivered from internet sites. House blended Dutch coffee contained $35.2{\pm}15.8CFU/mL$ of general bacteria, and this increased to $78.4{\pm}29.7CFU/mL$ at room temperature or $51.2{\pm}32.1CFU/mL$ after refrigeration for 5 days. These almost reached the highest criteria level for the Korea Food Sanitation Law. After 10 days, the count increased to $98.5{\pm}58.4CFU/mL$ at room temperature and $86.7{\pm}44.2CFU/mL$ at refrigeration temperature. In the Dutch coffee for distribution, $39.6{\pm}20.1CFU/mL$ of general bacteria were detected, but these did not increase after 5 days or 10 days both for room temperature and under refrigeration. The Coliform group was not found in any kind of Dutch coffee, and Fungi was founded in 60% of the Dutch samples purchased in coffee houses, department stores, and shopping sites mall. On day 0 day, $2.6{\pm}1.7CFU/mL$ of fungi were detected in the coffee house Dutch, and it did not increase significantly during the storage period at room and in a cold temperature. $3.5{\pm}3.4CFU/mL$ of fungi were detected in the Dutch coffee for distribution, and it didn't increase during further storage under any temperature.

  • Background: It is known that large dogs who are fed lamb and rice diets are at increased risk to develop taurine-deficiency-induced dilated cardiomyopathy. Since dogs obligatorily conjugate bile acids (BA) with taurine, we determined whether rice bran (RB) or other fibers (cellulose; CL, beet pulp; BP) would affect BA excretion and/or the taurine status of dogs. Results: Eighteen medium/large mixed-breed dogs were given purified diets containing CL, BP, or RB for 12 weeks. Taurine concentrations in plasma and whole blood were significantly decreased at week 12. The BP group, compared to the CL or RB groups, showed significantly lower taurine concentrations in plasma ($6.5{\pm}0.5$ vs $20.4{\pm}3.9$ and $13.1{\pm}2.0{\mu}mol/L$, respectively, P < 0.01, $mean{\pm}SEM$) and in whole blood ($79{\pm}10$ vs $143{\pm}14$ and $127{\pm}14{\mu}mol/L$, respectively, P < 0.01), lower apparent protein digestibility ($81.9{\pm}0.6$ vs $88.8{\pm}0.6$ and $88.1{\pm}1.2%$, respectively, P < 0.01), and higher BA excretions ($5.6{\pm}0.1$ vs $3.4{\pm}0.5$ and $3.4{\pm}0.4{\mu}mol/g$ feces, respectively, P < 0.05) at week 12. Conclusions: These results do not support the hypothesis that RB is likely to be a primary cause of lamb meal and rice diets, increasing the risk of taurine deficiency in large dogs. However these indicate that BP may contribute to a decrease taurine status in dogs by increasing excretion of fecal BA and decreasing protein digestibility, thus decreasing the bioavailability of sulfur amino acids, the precursors of taurine.

  • We investigated the vascular characteristics of tumors and normal tissue using perfusion CT in the rabbit brain tumor model. The VX2 carcinoma concentration of $1{\times}10^7$ cells/ml(0.1ml) was implanted in the brain of nine New Zealand white rabbits (weight: 2.4kg-3.0kg, mean: 2.6kg). The perfusion CT was scanned when the tumors were grown up to 5mm. The tumor volume and perfusion value were quantitatively analyzed by using commercial workstation (advantage windows workstation, AW, version 4.2, GE, USA). The mean volume of implanted tumors was $316{\pm}181mm^3$, and the biggest and smallest volumes of tumor were 497 $mm^3$ and 195 $mm^3$, respectively. All the implanted tumors in rabbits are single-nodular tumors, and intracranial metastasis was not observed. In the perfusion CT, cerebral blood volume (CBV) were $74.40{\pm}9.63$, $16.08{\pm}0.64$, $15.24{\pm}3.23$ ml/100g in the tumor core, ipsilateral normal brain, and contralateral normal brain, respectively ($p{\leqq}0.05$). In the cerebral blood flow (CBF), there were significant differences between the tumor core and both normal brains ($p{\leqq}0.05$), but no significant differences between ipsilateral and contralateral normal brains ($962.91{\pm}75.96$ vs. $357.82{\pm}12.82$ vs. $323.19{\pm}83.24$ ml/100g/min). In the mean transit time (MTT), there were significant differences between the tumor core and both normal brains ($p{\leqq}0.05$), but no significant differences between ipsilateral and contralateral normal brains ($4.37{\pm}0.19$ vs. $3.02{\pm}0.41$ vs. $2.86{\pm}0.22$ sec). In the permeability surface (PS), there were significant differences among the tumor core, ipsilateral and contralateral normal brains ($47.23{\pm}25.45$ vs. $14.54{\pm}1.60$ vs. $6.81{\pm}4.20$ ml/100g/min)($p{\leqq}0.05$). In the time to peak (TTP) were no significant differences among the tumor core, ipsilateral and contralateral normal brains. In the positive enhancement integral (PEI), there were significant differences among the tumor core, ipsilateral and contralateral brains ($61.56{\pm}16.07$ vs. $12.58{\pm}2.61$ vs. $8.26{\pm}5.55$ ml/100g). ($p{\leqq}0.05$). In the maximum slope of increase (MSI), there were significant differences between the tumor core and both normal brain($p{\leqq}0.05$), but no significant differences between ipsilateral and contralateral normal brains ($13.18{\pm}2.81$ vs. $6.99{\pm}1.73$ vs. $6.41{\pm}1.39$ HU/sec). Additionally, in the maximum slope of decrease (MSD), there were significant differences between the tumor core and contralateral normal brain($p{\leqq}0.05$), but no significant differences between the tumor core and ipsilateral normal brain($4.02{\pm}1.37$ vs. $4.66{\pm}0.83$ vs. $6.47{\pm}1.53$ HU/sec). In conclusion, the VX2 tumors were implanted in the rabbit brain successfully, and stereotactic inoculation method make single-nodular type of tumor that was no metastasis in intracranial, suitable for comparative study between tumors and normal tissues. Therefore, perfusion CT would be a useful diagnostic tool capable of reflecting the vascularity of the tumors.

  • In the present study, attempts were made to find out the physico-chemical properties of milt and the sperm motilities in various osmotic conditions using Panther puffer, Takifugu pardalis. The average concentration of sperm in the milt was $12.1{\pm}3.2{\times}10^9/mL$. pH and osmolality of seminal plasma were $8.2{\pm}0.3$, $385.5{\pm}12.5mOsm/kg$, respectively. Spermatozoa were immotile when the milt was mixed with solutions (electrolyte or non-electrolyte) of lower osmolality than the average seminal plasma osmolality ($385.5{\pm}12.5mOsm/kg$), but became motile after mixing milt with hyperosmotic solutions.

  • This study identified physical characteristics and aerosol particle sources of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ in the industrial complex of Busan Metropolitan City, Korea. Samples of $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$ and also soil, were collected in several areas during the year of 2012 to investigate elemental composition. A URG cyclone sampler was used for collection. The samples were collected according to each experimental condition, and the analysis method of SEM-EDX was used to determine the concentration of each metallic element. The comparative analysis indicated that their mass concentration ranged from 1% to 3%. The elements in the industrial region that were above 10% were Si, Al, Fe, and Ca. Those below 5% were Na, Mg, and S. The remaining elements (1% of total mass) consisted of elements such as Ni, Co, Br and Pb. Finally, a statistical tool was applied to the elemental results to identify each source for the industrial region. From a principal components analysis (SPSS, Ver 20.0) performed to analyze the possible sources of $PM_{10}$ in the industrial region, five main factors were determined. Factor 1 (Si, Al), which accounted for 15.8% of the total variance, was mostly affected by soil and dust from manufacturing facilities nearby, Factors 2 (Cu, Ni), 3 (Zn, Pb), and 4 (Mn, Fe), which also accounted for some of variance, were mainly related to iron, non-ferrous metals, and other industrial manufacturing sources. Also, five factors determined to access possible sources of $PM_{2.5}$, Factor 1 (Na, S), accounted for 13.5% of the total variance and was affected by sea-salt particles and fuel incineration sources, and Factors 2 (Ti, Mn), 3 (Pb, Cl), 4 (K, Al) also explained significant proportions of the variance. Theses factors mean that the $PM_{2.5}$ emission sources may be considered as sources of incineration, and metals, and non-ferrous manufacturing industries.

  • Particulate matter (PM) is designated as a group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO). In South Korea, the health threat caused by PM is the most serious level internationally. Therefore, in order to solve the urban PM problem, it is important to develop the technology that can control PM efficiently. In this study, CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation was performed for PM pre-filter (type 1-3 with different PM collecting room) to develop a high-efficiency PM collecting device. The complex flow field and the local flow phenomenon inside the PM collecting device were understood with CFD simulation by changing the shape and size of the pre-filter. The PM removal performance can be described with flow rate through the device and PM removal efficiency. The type-1 pre-filter with 5x5 size collecting room was confirmed to have the highest efficiency. Based on the analysis results, the optimal type of pre-filter could be developed and it would be applied as an element technology included in the PM collecting device.

  • The ambient mass concentration and chemical composition of the $PM_{2.5}$ were determined at the highland site with 1,100 m above sea level on Jeju Island from June 2013 to November 2014. Yearly averaged mass concentration of $PM_{2.5}$ was $11.97{\pm}8.63{\mu}g/m^3$. $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations were highest during the spring, while they tended to be lowest during the summer. Eight water soluble ionic species attributed 45.5% to $PM_{2.5}$ mass. $SO{_4}^{2-}$, $NO_3{^-}$ and $NH_4{^+}$ were major ions, which occupied to 27.9%, 3.7% and 12.3%, respectively. The greatest contributors to total mass concentration of water-soluble ions contained in $PM_{2.5}$ were sulfate, ammonium and nitrate. These three ions accounted for 96.6% in total ions mass concentration of $PM_{2.5}$. We could infer that these three secondary ions exist mostly in the form of $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and $NH_4NO_3$. $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ had a good relationship and with r=0.9. The molar ratio of $Mg^{2+}/Ca^{2+}$ in this study was lower than the value observed in sea water and higher than that in soil dust, indicating that these two ions originated from other sources rather than ocean and soil dust in this study.

  • The aim of this study was to develop the new processing method for ginseng. To investigate the efficacy of the new product (the traditional rice wine steamed-red ginseng: RWS-RGS), antioxidant and anticancer effects of RWS-RGS were examined. The DPPH radical scavenging effect of RWS-RGS extracted with ethanol was increased in dose-dependent manner Especially, A3 ($3^{rd}$ traditional rice wine steamed-red ginsengs) exhibited effective DPPH radical scavenging activity. Nitrite scavenging effect of white ginseng (W.G), red ginseng (R.G) and RWS-RGS ($A1\~A9:\;1^{st}$ traditional rice wine steamed-red $ginseng\~9^{th}$ traditional rice wine steamed-red ginseng) were $25.9{\pm}4.4\%,\;12.9{\pm}1.1\%\;and\;26.2{\pm}0.1\~56.1{\pm}0.6\%$ at pH 1.2, respectively. The antitumor effects of W.G, R.G and RWS-RGS (A9) were examined in Hep3B cancer cells. Their growth inhibition against Hep3B cancer cells showed $19.6{\pm}4.5\%,\;54.5{\pm}6.1\%,\;96.3{\pm}2.4\%$ at 5,000 ppm, respectively. These result suggest that the traditional rice wine steamed ginseng will be useful product with antioxidant and antitumor effect.

  • Concentrations of total particulate matter (TPM), $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ were measured at three different sites based on each different fuel type (solid, liquid and gas) used in thermal power plants operating in Yeosu and Gwangyang National Industrial Complexes during 2017. The highest concentrations of TPM, $PM_{10}$, and $PM_{2.5}$ were observed at the solid fuel facility, and these values were $3.356mg/Sm^3$, $2.342mg/Sm^3$ and $1.834mg/Sm^3$, respectively. The ratio of $PM_{2.5}$ to TPM was the highest value of 54.6% in solid fuel case, and the lowest was 35.7% found in liquid fuel case. As a result of analyzing 9 kinds of metal compound with respect to each particle size, the metal concentration of TPM is higher than those of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ in all fuel types. Total concentrations of metal elements in TPM by fuel difference are $1.2702mg/Sm^3$ in solid fuel, 0.0603 mg/Sm3 in liquid fuel, and $0.0733mg/Sm^3$ in gas fuel, respectively. Relatively higher total metal concentration in gas fuel than in liquid fuel was found; and this could be higher Cr and Al concentrations in use of gas fuel. As a result of estimating the emission factors of each facility, in case of solid fuel, TPM emissions per electricity production were found to be 0.7080 kt/PJ, followed by liquid fuel and gas fuel. $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ emissions per hour of electricity production were similar to those of TPM.
