  • An absorption spectrometry coupled with flow injection analysis has been developed and tested for the analysis of the Cr$_2O_7^{2-}$/Nn$O_4^-$ mixtures. Even though one has to inject the sample twice into the FIA system and the process of the sample treatment is required to completely destroy the Mn$O_4^-$ ion for the analysis of the Cr$_2O_7^{2-}$ ion, the new method has definite advantages over the current method. It utilizes only a single analytical wavelength (570 nm) and enables one to construct calibration curves which accurately follow the Beer's law over wide ranges of analytical concentrations of both ions ($2.0{\times}10^{-6}$M∼$8.0{\times}10^{-3}$M for Cr$_2O_7^{2-}$ ion, $2.0{\times}10^{-6}$M∼$4.0{\times}10^{-3}$M for MnO4- ion).

  • We have studied electronic structures and magnetic properties of $YMnO_3,\;ScManO_3$ with hexagonal structure using Full Potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave (FLAPW) method based on LSDA method. LSDA calculation results show that multiferroic $YMnO_3$ shows energy gap due to hexagonal symmetry and magnetic interaction. Because of insulating gap and small Y ion, $YMnO_3$ shows magnetic and ferroelectric state. However, $ScMnO_3$ does not show the energy gap because of strong hybridization of Mn-O for LSDA calculation. We confirmed the stability of multiferroic state for $YMnO_3\;and\;ScManO_3$ using total energy calculations. The antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric states have the lowest energy about 100 meV.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of Mn dopant (0.1~3.0 at% $Mn_3O_4$ sintered at 1000$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in air) on the bulk trap (i.e. defect) and grain boundary properties of ZnO, ZM(0.1~3.0) using admittance spectroscopy (AS), and impedance-modulus spectroscopy (IS & MS). As a result, three kinds of defect were found below the conduction band edge of ZnO as 0.09~0.14 eV (attractive coulombic center), 0.22~25 eV ($Zn^{{\cdot}{\cdot}}_i$), and 0.32~0.33 eV ($V^{\cdot}_o$). The oxygen vacancy increased with Mn doping. In ZM, an electrically single grain boundary as double Schottky barrier was formed with 0.82~1.0 eV of activation energies by IS & MS. We also find out that the barriers of grain boundary of Mn-doped ZnO (${\alpha}$-factor=0.13) were more stabilized and homogenized with temperature compared to pure ZnO.

  • The dc resistivity dc magnetization and thermopower of layered perovskite La1.6Ca1.4Mn2O7.07 have been studied. The ceramic sample of La1.6Ca1.4Mn2O7.07 undergoes the metal-insulator transition at 120K while a first-order phase transition from a ferromagnetic phase to a paramagnetic phae is observed at 260 K=TC This behavior is quite different from that of the well-known double exchange ferromagnets such as La1-xCaxMnO3 This phenomenon could be understood by considering the effects of the anisotropic double exchange interaction caused by two dimensional Mn-O-Mn networks in this materials. The dc magnetization between 120K and 250K is nearly constant and decreases rapidly with increasing temperature above 250K The measurements of dc resistivity and thermopower indicate that Zener polaron hopping conduction takes place above 260 K.

  • By substituting Mn or Cr for Co in inverse spinel $CoFe_2O_4,\;Mn_xCo_{1-x}Fe_2O_4\;and\;Cr_xCo_{1-x}Fe_2O_4$ and thin films were prepared by sol-gel method and their structural and magnetic properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction indicates that the cubic lattice constant increase for the Mn substitution while it hardly changes for the Cr substitution. Substitution of $Mn^{2+}$ for octahedral $Co^{2+}$ sites can explain the increase of lattice constant in $Mn_xCo_{1-x}Fe_2O_4$. On the other hand, Substitution of $Cr^{3+}$ for octahedral $Co^{2+}$ and subsequent reduction of $Fe^{3+}$ ion into $Fe^{2+}$ are expected to happen. Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements on $Cr_xCo_{1-x}Fe_2P_4$ indicate the existence of tetrahedral $Fe^{2+}$ ions that are created through reduction of tetrahedral $Fe^{3+}$ ions in order to compensate charge imbalance happened by $Cr^{3+}$ substitution for octahedral $Co^{2+}$ sites. On the other hand, no $Fe^{2+}$ ions were detected by Mossbauer spectroscopy for $Mn_xCo_{1-x}Fe_2O_4$. A migration of $Fe^{3+}$ ions from octahedral to tetrahedral sites In $Mn_xCo_{1-x}Fe_2O_4$ was detected by Mossbauer spectroscopy for x>0.47. Vibrating sample magnetometry measurements on the samples at room temperature revealed that the saturation magnetization increases by Mn and Cr substitution for certain range of x, qualitatively explainable in terms of the comparison of spin magnetic moment among the related transition-metal ions.

  • [ $Zn_{2(1-x)}Mn_xSiO_4$ ]$0.07{\leq}x{\leq}0.15$) green phosphor was prepared by solid state reaction. The first heating was at $900^{\circ}C-1250^{\circ}C$ in air for 3 hours and the second heating was at $900^{\circ}C$ in $N_2/H_2$(95%/5%) for 2 hours. The size effect of $SiO_2$ in forming $Zn_2SiO_4$ was investigated. The temperature for obtaining single phase $Zn_2SiO_4$ was lowered from $1100^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$ by decreasing the $SiO_2$ particle size from micro size to submicro size. The effect of the activators for the Photoluminescence (PL) intensity of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn^{2+}$ was also investigated. The PL intensity properties of the phosphors were investigated under vacuum ultraviolet excitation (147 nm). The emission spectrum peak was between 520 nm and 530 nm, which was involved in green emission area. $MnCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$, the activator source, was more effective in providing high emission intensity than $MnCO_3$. The optimum conditions for the best optical properties of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn^{2+}$ were at x = 0.11 and $1100^{\circ}C$. In these conditions, the phosphor particle shape was well dispersed spherical and its size was 200 nm.

  • Spinel $LiNi_xMn_{2-x}O_4$ thin films were synthesized up to x = 0.9 by a sol-gel method employing spin-coating. The Ni-substituted films were found to maintain cubic structure at low x but to exhibit tetragonal structure for $x{\geq}0.6$. Such cubic-tetragonal phase transition indicates that $Ni^{3+}(d7)$ ions with low-spin $(t_{2g}^6,e_g^1)$ state occupy the octahedral sites of the compound, thus being subject to the Jahn-Teller distortion. By x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy both $Ni^{2+}$ and $Ni^{3+}$ ions were detected. Optical properties of the $LiNi_xMn_{2-x}O_4$ films were investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) in the visible?ultraviolet range. The measured dielectric function spectra by SE mainly consist of broad absorption structures attributed to charge-transfer (CT) transitions, $O^{2-}(2p){\rightarrow}Mn^{4+}(3d)$ for 1.9 $(t_{2g})$ and $2.8{\sim}3.0$ eV $(e_g)$ structures and $O^{2-}(2p){\rightarrow}Mn^{3+}(3d)$ for 2.3 $(t_{2g})$ and $3.4{\sim}3.6$ eV $(e_g)$ structures. Also, sharp absorption structures were observed at about 1.6, 1.7, and 1.9 eV, interpreted as due to d-d crystal-field transitions within the octahedral $Mn^{3+}$ ion. The strengths of these absorption structures are reduced by the Ni substitution. Rapid reduction of the CT transition strength involving the eg states for x = 0.6 is attributed to the reduced wavefunction overlap between the $e_g$ and the $O^{2-}(2p)$ states due to the tetragonal extension of the lattice constant by the Jahn-Teller effect.

  • Wet chemical analysis (for $MnO_2$, MnO, and $H_2O$(+)) and electron microprobe analysis (for $Fe_2O_3$ and PbO) give $MnO_2$ 74.91, MnO 11.33, $Fe_2O_3$ (total Fe) 4.19, PbO 0.03, $H_2O$ (+) 9.46, sum 99.92%. 'Available oxygen determined by oxalate titration method is allotted to $MnO_2$ from total Mn, and the remaining Mn is calculated as MnO. Traces of Ba, Ca, Mg, K, Cu, Zn, and Al were found. Li and Na were not found. The existence of (OH) is verified from the infrared absorption spectra. The analysis corresponds to the formula $Mn^{4+}{_{4.85}}(Mn^{2+}{_{0.90}}Fe^{3+}{_{0.30}})_{1.20}O_{8.09}(OH)_{5.91}$, on the basis of O=14, 'or ideally $Mn^{4+}{_{5-x}}(Mn^{2+},Fe^{3+})_{1+x}O_{8}(OH)_{6}$ ($x{\approx}0.2$). X-ray single crystal study could not be made because of the distortion of single crystals. But the x-ray powder pattern is satisfactorily indexed by an orthorhombic cell with a 9.324, b 14.05, c $7.956{\AA}$., Z=4. The indexed powder diffraction lines are 9.34(s) (100), 7.09(s) (020), 4.62(m) (200, 121), 4.17(m) (130), 3.547(s) (112), 3.212(vw) (041), 3.101(s) (300), 2.597(w) (013), 2.469(m) (331), 2.214(vw)(420), 2.098(vw) (260), 2.014 (vw) (402), 1.863(w) (500), 1.664(w) (314), 1.554(vw) (600), 1.525(m) (601), 1.405(m) (0.10.0). DTA curve shows the endothermic peaks at $250-370^{\circ}C$ and $955^{\circ}C$. The former is due to the dehydration: and oxidation forming$(Mn,\;Fe)_2O_3$(cubic, a $9.417{\AA}$), and the latter is interpreted as the formation of a hausmannite-type oxide (tetragonal, a 5.76, c $9.51{\AA}$) from $(Mn,\;Fe)_2O_3$. Infrared absorption spectral curve shows Mn-O stretching vibrations at $515cm^{-1}$ and $545cm^{-1}$, O-H bending vibration at $1025cm^{-1}$ and O-H stretching vibration at $3225cm^{-1}$. Opaque. Reflectance 13-15%. Bireflectance distinct in air and strong in oil. Reflection pleochroism changes from whitish to light grey. Between crossed nicols, color changes from yellowish brown with bluish tint to grey in air and yellowish brown to grey through bluish brown in oil. No internal reflections. Etching reactions: HCl(conc.) and $H_2SO_4+H_2O_2$-grey tarnish; $SnCl_2$(sat.)-dark color; $HNO_3$(conc.)-grey color; $H_2O_2$-tarnish with effervescence. It is black in color. Luster dull. Cleavage one direction perfect. Streak brownish black to dark brown. H. (Mohs) 2-3, very fragile. Specific gravity 3.59(obs.), 3.57(calc.). It occurs as radiating groups of flakes, flower-like aggregates, colloform bands, dendritic or arborescent masses composed of fine grains in the cementation zone of the supergene manganese oxide deposits of the Janggun mine, Bonghwa-gun, southeastern Korea. Associated minerals are calcite, nsutite, todorokite, and some undetermined manganese dioxide minerals. The name is for the mine, the first locality. • In this study, we have investigated the effects of Mn and Co co-doping on defects, J-E curves and grain boundary characteristics of ZnO-$Bi_2O_3$ (ZB) varistor. Admittance spectra and dielectric functions show two bulk defects of $Zn_i^{{\cdot}{\cdot}}$ (0.17~0.18 eV) and $V_o^{\cdot}$ (0.30~0.33 eV). From J-E characteristics the nonlinear coefficient (${\alpha}$) and resistivity (${\rho}_{gb}$) of pre-breakdown region decreased as 30 to 24 and 5.1 to 0.08 $G{\Omega}cm$ with sintering temperature, respectively. The double Schottky barrier of grain boundaries in ZB(MCo) ($ZnO-Bi_2O_3-Mn_3O_4-Co_3O_4$) could be electrochemically single type. However, its thermal stability was slightly disturbed by ambient oxygen because the apparent activation energy of grain boundaries was changed from 0.64 eV at lower temperature to 1.06 eV at higher temperature. It was revealed that a co-doping of Mn and Co in ZB reduced the heterogeneity of the barrier in grain boundaries and stabilized the barrier against an ambient temperature (${\alpha}$-factor= 0.136).
