  • To obtain the fundamental information on the dissolution of nickel into the slag in the pyrometallurgical processes for treatment of wasted PCB, the distribution ratios of nickel between CaO-$SiO_2-Al_2O_3$-MgO slag and copper-5 wt%Ni alloy were measured at 1623 K to 1823 K under a controlled $CO_2$-CO atmosphere. The distribution ratio of Ni increased linearly with increasing oxygen partial pressure. Therefore, the dissolution reaction of nickel into the slags could be described by the following equation; $$Ni(l)_{metal}+\frac{1}{2}O_2(g)NiO(l)_{slag}$$ The distribution ratio of Ni increased linearly with increasing content of basic oxides(CaO and MgO) in slag. However, the distribution ratio of Ni decreased linearly with increasing temperature. From these results, the empirical equation of distribution ratio of Ni was obtained by the following equation from the analysis of experimental conditions by multiple regression. $${\log}L_{Ni}=0.4000{\log}P_{O2}-5.1{\times}10^{-4}T+0.3375\(\frac{X_{CaO}+X_{MgO}}{X_{SiO2}}\)$$

  • The mechanochemical milling of Mg and $Mg_2Ni$ alloys were carried out to examine the enhancement of hydrogen storage properties of Mg alloys. The hydroge characteristics of the ball-milled products were evaluated with a Sievert-type apparatus and electrochemical test. Various intermediate compounds were obtained by chemical reactions induced during the ball milling of Mg of $Mg_2Ni$ alloys with C, Ni, $Ni_2Cl$ and $Ca_2Cl$. The system of $Mg_2Ni$ with 10 wt% C improved markedly the kinetics of hydrogen absorption, while the hydrogen capacities were practically unchanged. The hydrogen storage alloys such as Mg-Ca can be successfully.

  • The objective of this works was to synthesize the$Mg_2Ni$ hydrogen storage materials economically and to eliminate the intial activation process. $Mg_2NiH_x$ was mechanically alloyed under purified hydrogen gas atmosphere using pure Mg and Ni chips. M.A(Mechanical Alloying) was carried out using planetary ball mill for times varying from 12h to 96h under 20bars of hydrogen gas pressure. $Mg_2NiH_x$ started to form after 48h and the homogeneous $Mg_2NiH_x$ composites was synthesized after 96h. From TG analysis, the dehydriding reaction of $Mg_2NiH_x$ started at around $200^{\circ}C$. The result of P-C-T at $300^{\circ}C$ revealed the hydrogen storage capacity of $Mg_2NiH_c$ reached 3.68 wt% and the effective hydrogen storage was 2.38 wt%. The enthalpy difference of absorption-desorption cycling for the hydride formation and the hysteresis were reduced and the plateau flatness and the sloping were improved according to M.A time.

  • Samples of pure Mg, 76.5 wt%Mg-23.5 wt%Ni, and 71.5 wt%Mg-23.5 wt%Ni-5 wt%$Fe_2O_3$ were prepared by reactive mechanical grinding and their hydriding and dehydriding properties were then investigated. The reactive mechanical grinding of Mg with Ni is considered to facilitate nucleation and to shorten diffusion distances of hydrogen atoms. After hydriding-dehydriding cycling, the 76.5 wt%Mg-23.5 wt%Ni and 71.5 wt%Mg-23.5 wt%Ni-5 wt%$Fe_2O_3$ samples contained $Mg_2Ni$ phase. In addition to the effects of the creation of defects and the decrease in particle size, the addition of Ni increases the hydriding and dehydriding rates by the formation of $Mg_2Ni$. Expansion and contraction of the hydride-forming materials (Mg and $Mg_2Ni$) with the hydriding and dehydriding reactions are also considered to increase the hydriding and dehydriding rates of the mixture by forming defects and cracks leading to the fragmentation of particles. The reactive mechanical grinding of Mg-Ni alloy with $Fe_2O_3$ is considered to decrease the particle size.

  • We have investigated the addition effect of NiO magnetic nanoparticles on crystal structure, microstructure as well as superconducting properties of $MgB_2$. NiO-added $MgB_2$ samples were prepared by the solid-state reaction method. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of 37.91 K was obtained for pure $MgB_2$, and $T_c$ was found to decrease systematically on increasing the addition level of NiO. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that no substitution of Ni for Mg in the lattice of $MgB_2$ was occurred. The microstructural analysis shows that the pure $MgB_2$ sample consists of plate shape $MgB_2$ grains, and the grains get refined to smaller size with the addition of NiO nanoparticles. At 5 K, high values of critical current density ($J_c$) were obtained for small amount NiO-added $MgB_2$ samples as compared to pure sample. The enhancement in $J_c$ could be attributed to the refinement of $MgB_2$ grains which leads to high density of grain boundaries in NiO-added $MgB_2$ samples.

  • Effects of the fluorination in the $K_2$TiF\ulcorner solution and in-situ KF+ KOH electrolyte on the electrochemical charge-discharge properties of CaNi\ulcorner and the Mg-CaNi\ulcorner electrodes were investigated. In-situ fluorination in the KF+ KOH electrolyte compared with pre-fluorination in the$ K_2$TiF\ulcorner solution could improve the electrochemical cycling durability of CaNi\ulcorner and MG-CaN\ulcorner electrodes. The fluorinated layer on the alloy surface by pre-fluorination to improve the activity and anti-corrosion of the electrodes was dissolved in the pure KOH electrolyte during the cycling. The fluorinated layer was formed continuously on the surface of the electrode by thee2N KF addition in the 6N KOH electrolyte. The excess F\ulcorner ion addition in KOH electrolyte could improve the electrochemical cycling durability of CaNi\ulcorner and Mg-CaNi\ulcorner electrode. But, in case of MG-CaNi\ulcorner electrode, the discharge capacity of the electrode was reduced and the poor cycling property was shown with increasing of the MG process times.

  • The hydrogenation behavior of $Mg_2Ni$ powder prepared by ball milling has been studied. Ball milled $Mg_2Ni$ was transformed to an amorphous-like state after 200hr ballmilling, and crystallized to $Mg_2NiH_x$ by hydrogenation at got. The hydrogen storage capacity gradually increased as a function of ball milling time. $Mg_2Ni$ by 400hr ballmilling shows higher hydrogen storage capacity (3H/M) than $Mg_2Ni$ by VIM(Vacuum Induction Melting).

  • Hydrogenation properties of Mg-Ni and Mg-Ti-Ni alloys were investigated by Pressure-Composition Isotherm (PCI) test. Those alloys were fabricated by a new alloying method, Rotation-Cylinder Method (RCM). The as-cast microstructure of Mg-10 mass% Ni alloy consists of an island-like hydride forming $\alpha$-Mg phase and the eutectic structure. After 350 cyclic tests, Mg-lO mass % Ni alloy was pulverized into fine particles of 100 nm. The fine particles, which have a large specific surface area, are highly reactive with hydrogen. However, extreme pulvehzation can separate Mg from $Mg_2Ni$ in the eutectic structure, so $Mg_2Ni$ of the eutectic structure cannot behave as a dissociated hydrogen supplier.

  • Mg-23.5 wt%Ni-xwt%Cu (x = 2.5, 5 and 7.5) samples for hydrogen storage were prepared by melt spinning and crystallization heat treatment from a Mg-23.5 wt%Ni-5 wt%Cu alloy synthesized by the gravity casting method. They were then ground under $H_2$ to obtain a fine powder. Among these samples the Mg-23.5Ni-2.5Cu sample had the highest hydriding and dehydriding rates after activation. The Mg-23.5Ni-2.5Cu sample absorbed 3.59 and 4.01 wt%H for 10 and 60 min, respectively, at 573K under 12 bar $H_{2}$. The activated 88(87.5Mg-10Ni-2.5Cu)-$5Nb_{2}O_{5}-7NbF_{5}$ sample absorbed 2.93 wt%H for 10 min, and 3.14 wt%H for 60 min at 573K under 12 bar $H_{2}$.
