Stabilization of fluorine in soil using calcium hydroxide and its potential human health risk

  • This study assessed the stabilization of fluorine (F)-contaminated soil using calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and the consequent changes in human health risk. The bioavailable F decreased to 3.5%, (i.e., 57.9 ± 1.27 mg/kg in 6% Ca(OH)2-treated soil sample) from 43.0%, (i.e., 711 ± 23.4 mg/kg in control soil sample). This resulted from the conversion of water-soluble F to stable calcium fluoride, which was confirmed by XRD spectrometry. Soil ingestion, inhalation of fugitive dust from soil, and water ingestion were selected as exposure pathways for human health risk assessment. Non-carcinogenic risks of F in soils reduced to less than 1.0 after stabilization, ranging from 4.2 to 0.34 for child and from 3.0 to 0.25 for adult. Contaminated water ingestion owing to the leaching of F from soil to groundwater was considered as a major exposure pathway. The risks through soil ingestion and inhalation of fugitive dust from soil were insignificant both before and after stabilization, although F concentration exceeded the Korean soil regulatory level before stabilization. Our data suggested that substantial risk to human health owing to various potential exposure pathways could be addressed by managing F present in soil.

Electrical and Optical Characteristics in Organic Electroluminescent Devices with Different Materials for Electron Injection

  • In this study, organic electroluminescent devices with the ITO/TPD/Alq$_3$/cathode structure, using various materials of Al, Mg:Ag, Al:Li, MgF$_2$/Al, and LiF/Al as cathodes, were fabricated. We investigated the electrical and optical properties of the devices as follow: current density-voltage(J-V), luminance-voltage(L-V) and luminous efficiency-voltage curves. The bilayer cathodes with LiF/Al and MgF$_2$/Al exhibited better device performance than the other cathodes. It is considered that the improved performance of the organic electroluminescent devices is attributable to the lowering of driving voltage caused by the enhanced electron injection. The alkaline-earth fluorides are desirable materials to improve the performance of the EL devices with the Al cathode, and high luminous efficiency was achieved.

Long Term Operation of Biological Hydrogen Production in Anaerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor (ASBR) (생물학적 수소생산을 위한 혐기성 연속 회분식 반응조(ASBR)의 장기운전 특성)

  • Long term hydrogen production was investigated in an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) using mixed microflora. Glucose (about 8,250 mg/L) was used as a substrate for the ASBR operation under the condition of pH 5.5 and $37^{\circ}C$ with mixing at 150 rpm. The experiment was carried out over a period of 160 days. Hydrogen yield was 0.8mol $H_2/mol$ glucose with F/M ratio 2 at initial operation period. The hydrogen yield reached to maximum 2.6 mol $H_2/mol$ glucose at 80th day operation. However decreased hydrogen yield was observed after 80 days operation and eventually no hydrogen yield. Although well-known hydrogen producer Clostridium sp. was detected in the reactor by PCR-DGGE analysis, changed reactor operation was the major reason of the decreased hydrogen production, such as low F/M ratio of 0.5 and high propionic acid concentration 2,130 mg/L. Consequently the long period operation resulted in MLSS accumulation and then low F/M ration stimulating propionic acid formation which consumes hydrogen produced in the reactor.

Microstructure and Characteristics Change of the HVOF Sprayed $\textrm{Cr}_{3}\textrm{C}_{2}$-20wt%(NiCr) Coatings by Heat Treatment (HVOF 용사된 $\textrm{Cr}_{3}\textrm{C}_{2}$-20wt%(NiCr)층의 열처리에 따른 미세구조 및 특성 변화)

  • C $r_{3}$ $C_{2}$-20wt% NiCr 이 크래드된 분말을 이용하여 HVOF 용사층의 특성(미세조직, 결정상, 경도 그리고 erosion rate)에 미치는 연료/산소 비(=3.2,3.0,2.8,2.6)의 영향을 조사했다. 실험범위 내에서 F/O=3.0의 경우가 C $r_{3}$ $C_{2}$-20wt%(NiCr)크래드 분말의 최적용사조건 이었다. XRD분석결과 F/O비에 관계없이 카바이드분해는 일어 났다. C $r_{3}$ $C_{2}$에서C $r_{7}$ $C_{3}$로의 상변화는 F/O비가 감소함에 따라 증가했다. 열처리 온도가 높아짐에 따라 C $r_{7}$ $C_{3}$분율은 증가 하였으며, 100$0^{\circ}C$에서 50시간 열처리후 용사층의 주된상은 C $r_{7}$ $C_{3}$이였다. 용사상태에서 경도값은 F/O=3.0조건으로 용사된 코팅층이 $H_{v300}$-1040으로 가장 높았으며, 공기중에서 $600^{\circ}C$, 50시간 열처리한 후, 경도값은 1340으로 증가하였다. 그리고 80$0^{\circ}C$열처리 후 경도값은 약간 감소하였다. 그러나 100$0^{\circ}C$ 열처리 후에도 1060정도로 용사상태의 경우 보다는 높은 경도값을 유지하였다. 이와같이 경도값이 증가하는 이유는 열처리에 따라 용사층이 치밀하게 되고 또한 C $r_{2}$ $O_{3}$의 산화물이 C $r_{3}$ $C_{2}$/C $r_{7}$ $C_{3}$ 내에 생성되어 탄화물/산화물 복합체를 이루기 때문으로 생각된다. 용사상태에서 drosion rate는 F/O비에 따라 2.6-3.05x$10^{-4}$mg/g까지 변화하였다. 또한 $600^{\circ}C$열처리 후에는 2.15-2.3 x $10^{-4}$mg/g이였으며, 80$0^{\circ}C$에서 열처리한 후에는 2.3-2.4x$10^{-4}$mg/g으로 $600^{\circ}C$열처리후 보다 약간 높은 결과를 보였다.결과를 보였다.

Nitrogen Dissolution in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-CaF2 Slags (CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-CaF2 슬래그의 질소용해도에 관한 연구)

  • The nitrogen solubility and nitride capacity of $CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3-MgO-CaF_2$ slag systems were measured by using gas-liquid equilibration at 1773K. The nitrogen solubility of this slag system decreased with increasing CO partial pressure, with the linear relationship between nitrogen contents and oxygen partial pressure being -3/4. This system was expected to show two types of nitride solution behavior. First, the nitrogen solubility decreased to a minimum value and then increased with the increase of CaO contents. These mechanisms were explained by considering that nitrogen can dissolve into slags as "free nitride" at high basicities and as "incorporated nitride" within the network at low basicities. Also, the basicity of slag and nitride capacity were explained by using optical basicity. The nitrogen contents exhibited temperature dependence, showing an increase in nitrogen contents with increasing temperature.

Production of a Keratinolytic Protease by a Feather-Degrading Bacterium, Bacillus megaterium F7-1 (우모분해세균 Bacillus megaterium F7-1에 의한 Keratinolytic Protease의 생산)

  • Bacillus megaterium F7-1 producing keratinolytic protease was isolated from decayed chicken feather. The optimal culture conditions for the production of keratinolytic protease by B. megaterium F7-1 were investigated. The composition of optimal medium for the keratinolytic protease was 0.2% glucose, 0.8% skim milk, 0.05% NaCl, 0.01 % $(K_2HPO_4$, 0.02%, $(KH_2PO_4$ and 0.01 % $MgCl_2$. Especially, skim milk was found to be the most effective compound in keratinolytic protease production. The optimal temperature and initial pH were 6.5 and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. The keratinolytic protease production under optimal condition reached a maximum of 269 U/ml after 5 days of cultivation. B. megaterium F7-1 degraded 98% of the feather used in the optimized medium within 6 days.

Effects of Butyl Benzyl Phthalate on Dams and F1 during Lactation Period of Rats (수유기에 투여된 Butyl Benzyl Phthalate가 랫드 차산자에 미치는 영향)

  • BBP (Butyl benzyl phthalate), a widely used plasticizer. can enter the food and environment as consequence of its manufacture, use, and disposal. BBP was found to be developmental and teratogenic or endocrine disrupting chemical in rats. The effects of BBP were investigated in female rats (P) and second generation (F1) via lactations. Sprague-Dawley were given BBP by oral administration at 0, 5, 10, 100, 1000 mg/kg on day 0 to 21 of lactation period. The results were as follows : At maternal findings, there were some significant changes (p<0.05) in relative organ weight, especially liver and uterus weight by BBP administration. In estrous cycle, high treated group was inclined to be proestrus or estrus compared to control group. BBP indues estrous cycle earlier than the control group. At fetal findings, there were some significant changes in relative liver and spleen weight, especially 100, 1000 mg/kg administered groups. The relative weight of ventral prostate was decreased, so it was represent to dose-response tendency. Parent rats (P) were detected monobenzyl phthalate (MBeP) 3.21~5.81 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml in 100, 1000 mg/kg dose groups. MBeP of male and female fetuses (F1) were detected at the level of 1.21~2.63 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml of serum. Male serum concentration oi MBeP was higher than the females'. Estrogen receptor $\alpha$ expression by BBP and bisphenol A in uterus and testis of F1 were studied. The ER$\alpha$ expression were increased in F1 male testis and female uterus. F1 male showed distint ER$\alpha$ expression, especially in the combined exposrue. Synergistic ER$\alpha$ expression was found by combined treatment group of BBP and bisphenol A. From the above results, it could be concluded that the effects of dams and F1 by BBP administration during lactation period were estrogenic, and BBP can transfer to F1 via lactation, and make estrogenic at F1 reproductive organs.

Stable Transmission and Continuous Expression of Human Interleukin-10 Transgene in the Offspring of Transgenic Mice (형질전환 생쥐의 후대에서 인간 Interleukin-10 유전자의 안정적 전이와 지속적인 발현)

  • The transgenic mice carrying human Interleukin-10 (hIL-10) gene in conjunction with bovine (3 -casein promoter express hIL-10 in milk during lactation. In this study, stability of germ line transmission and expression of hIL-10 transgene integrated into host chromosome were monitored up to generation F8 of transgenic mice. When male mouse of generation F8 was crossbred with normal females, approximately half of offspring (50.9±5.8%) were identified as transgenic mice. Generation F9 to F15 mice also showed similar transmission rates (66.0±20.1%, 61.5±16.7%, 41.1±8.4%, 40.7±20.3%, 61.3±10.8%, 49.2±18.8% and 43.8±25.9%, respectively), implying that hIL-10 transgene can be transmitted stably up to long term generation in the transgenic mice. Expression levels of human IL-10 from milk of generation F9 to F14 mice were 3.6± 1.2 mg/ml, 4.2±0.9 mg/ml, 5.7±1.5 mg/ml, 6.3±3.5 mg/ml, 6.8±4.5 mg/ml and 6.8±3.1 mg/ml, respectively, which was showed high-level expression compared with that of generation F1 (1.6 mg/ml) mice. In conclusion, our results suggest that transgenic mice can be continuously passed their transgenes to the progeny through the breeding program with the same productivity of human IL-10 protein in their milk.

The Study on the Ion Water Characteristics of Raw Water in the Domestic Natural Mineral Water (국내 유통 중인 먹는샘물 원수의 이온류 수질 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The goal of this study is to provide basic data to establish a foundation for the provision of safe drinkable water. The raw water of natural mineral water was analyzed to determine the quantities of anions (F-, Cl-, NO3-N-, and SO42- ) and cations (Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, and Na+) during the former and latter half of 2016. Analysis of the current quality of the raw water of natural mineral water among domestic manufacturers showed average anions contents of 0.46mg/L of fluorine, 8mg/L of chlorine ion, 1.5mg/L of nitrate nitrogen, and 12mg/L of sulfate ion. While the fluorine content was greater than the water quality criterion of 2.0mg/L at four points, the fluorine level was overall stable. The average cations contents included 21.3mg/L of calcium, 1.0mg/L of potassium, 3.4mg/L of magnesium, and 9.6mg/L of sodium. The chemical characteristics were compared among the major ions, and the results are presented in a piper diagram. The content ratio of cations was in the order of Ca2+> Na+>Mg2+>K+, whereas that of anions was in the order of SO42->Cl->NO3-N->F-. While the cations were slightly scattered, the anions were generally concentrated except for at a few points. The Ca-Na-HCO3 type was dominant overall in water sources from diorite, gneiss, and granite, while the Na-Mg-Ca-HCO3-Cl type was dominant in basalt sources. Mineral water manufacturers source their water under various conditions, including in-hole casing, excavation depth, and contact state of bedrock; even within the same rocky area, some differences in the water quality type can occur. When the depth of the water source was taken into account, the mean anions contents of F-, Cl-, NO3-N-, and SO42- were similar, with no significant differences according to depth. Of the cations, K+ and Na+ showed no significant differences across all the tubular wells, whereas Ca2+ and Mg2+ decreased in content with depth.

단일 이온 빔 증착법을 이용한 $MgF_2$$ZrO_2$ 박막의 제조

  • 재료의 광학적 특성을 변화시키기 위한 표면 코팅의 사용을 잘 알려져 있다. 그리고 이러한 광학 코팅은 우리가 주위에서 볼 수 있는 렌즈에서부터 레이저반사경 다 나아가 다양한 광학 필터에 이르기까지 빛의 간섭을 이용한 광학 박막의 코팅은 폭넓게 이용되고 있다. 그러한 응용가운데 불필요한 표면 반사를 방지함으로써 전체 투과율을 강화시키기 위한 무반사(Anti-Reflection) 코팅은 오늘날 광대역 무반사 특성 등 다양한 광학적 요구에 따라 하나 또는 그 이상의 층을 형성함으로써 극적으로 성취할 수 있다. 본 실험은 기존 많이 활용되는 증발법 그리고 스퍼터링 방법과는 달리 고진공하에서 증착 변수를 효과적으로 제어, 박막을 형성할 수 있는 자체 제작된 단일 IBS(Ion Beam Sputtering) 시스템을 이용하여 우수한 광학적 특성을 갖는 광학 재료로써 무반사용 다층박막 형성하기 앞서 MgF2, ZrO2 (yttria stabilized zirconia) 단층 박막을 제조하였으며, 각 증착 변수에 따른 결정학적 및 광학적 특성을 관찰하였다. 본 실험에 사용된 제조 장비로 Kaufman type 2.5inch의 이온 건이 장착된 Ion Beam sputtering 시스템으로 초기 진공도는 5$\times$10-6orr이며, 이온 빔의 전류 밀도는 Fareday cup을 이용했다. 6inch 크기의 ZrO2(yttria stabilized zirconia), MgF2 타겟트를 이용하여 Si(100), glass 기판위에 박막을 성장시켰다. 각 타겟트에 대한 증착변수로 이온 에너지, 기판온도, Ar 가스량을 변화시키면서 박막을 제조하였다. 제조된 박막의 광학적 특성으로 가시 영역에서 투과율의 변화는 자외/가시광선 분광 분석기 (UV/VIS specrophotometer)를 이용하여 측정했다. 그리고 박막의 조성 및 결정학적 구조는 AES EDS와 XRD로 확인하였다. 이온 빔 전압 500V, 빔 저류 55mA일 때 온도는 상온에서 30$0^{\circ}C$까지 승온 후 MgF2 박막의 XRD분석결과 우세한 결정성을 관찰할 수 없었으며, 이 때의 광 투과도는 가시영역에서 80~90%의 값으로 측정되었다. 추후 증착된 막의 결정성을 위해 열처리를 실시하고, 각 증착조건에 대한 결과는 학회 발표시 보고한다.
