  • We investigated refractive errors and corneal power with 3 factors such as M, $J_0$, and $J_{45}$ as power vector to find out the changes of refractive errors of the before and after cataract surgery in 119 adults aged 45~85 years with cataract. After the surgery, the 3 factors were changed as $-0.29{\pm}2.38D$ to $-0.18{\pm}0.69D$ in spherical equivalent power which is the M factor, $-0.34{\pm}0.68D$ to $-0.05{\pm}0.42D$ in the $J_0$ factor, and $0.11{\pm}0.45$ to $0.02{\pm}0.17$ in the $J_{45}$ factor. Before and after the surgery, corneal mean refractive power, $J_0$, and $J_{45}$ were changed from $44.11{\pm}1.61D$ to $44.20{\pm}1.58D$, $0.01{\pm}0.50D$ to $0.08{\pm}0.49D$, and $0.02{\pm}0.29$ to $0.08{\pm}0.49$, respectively. The results showed that $J_0$ was the highest relativeness in correlation of the pre- and post-surgery for refractive errors, mean corneal power was the highest correlation for corneal power factor, and corneal power factor was the higher correlation much more than refractive error factor.

  • Clinical evaluation by Astigmatic Components of autorefractors was performed to examine validity and accuracy compared with subjective refraction. The mean cylindrical powers of Astigmatic Components of Subjective Refraction, Closed-view and Open-view were found to be $-0.689{\pm}0.516D$, $-0.691{\pm}0.530D$, $-0.470{\pm}0.507D$, respectively. The Difference of cylindrical Components between Subjective Refraction and Closed, Open-view were found to be $0.002{\pm}0.191D$, $0.015{\pm}0.137D$, respectively. Approximately 85% of Closed-view and Open-view autorefractor measurements were within ${\pm}20^{\circ}$ range of the difference of cylindrical axis with subjective refraction. The mean $J_0$ Components of Astigmatic Components of subjective refraction, Closed-view and Open-view were found to be $-0.155{\pm}0.332D$, $-0.004{\pm}0.178D$, $-0.001{\pm}0.156D$, respectively. The mean $J_{45}$ Components of Astigmatic Components, Closed-view and Open-view were found to be $-0.023{\pm}0.227D$, $-0.026{\pm}0.172D$, $-0.014{\pm}0.182D$, respectively. Both of the Closed-view and Open-view refractor showed available accuracy in measuring astigmatic components.

  • In this study, the performance between subjective refraction and open-field/closed view autorefraction was estimated. We measured the refractive error of early adults aged 18 to 20 years who did not have eye disease. The differences between measurements obtained by subjective refraction and open-field autorefraction for SE, J0, and J45 were $-0.13{\pm}0.53D$ (p=0.17), $+0.33{\pm}0.68D$ (p=0.01), and $+0.13{\pm}0.68D$ (p=0.26), respectively, with only J0 differing significantly. The differences between the measurements of subjective refraction and closed-view autorefraction for SE, J0, and J45 were $-0.30{\pm}0.42D$ (p=0.00), $+0.30{\pm}0.71D$ (p=0.02), and $-0.02{\pm}0.63D$ (p=0.88), respectively, with only SE and J0 differing significantly. The coefficient of accuracy for SE, J0, and J45 components of open-field and closed-view autorefraction were 1.04, 1.33, and 1.34 and 0.83, 1.40, and 1.24, respectively. It is possible to predict the refractive error, which is necessary when deciding on subjective refraction, by measuring the objective refraction of open-field/closed view autorefractors.

  • The composition of two Bokbunja (Rubus coreanus Miquel) wines (one without mushroom extracts (wine A) and the other is with the extracts (wine B)) has been investigated to improve the quality of Bokbunja wine. The content of solid particle, acidity, crude ash, crude protein of the wine A were 10.5%, 1.36%, 0.45% and 0.05% and those of wine B were 7.4%, 0.54%, 0.31%, and 0.22%, respectively. Crude fat and crude fiber were not detected in both samples. To verify the flavor quality of Bokbunja wine, the volatile components from ethylether extracts of two wines were analyzed using GC/FID and GC/MS. A total number of 12 volatile flavor compounds (6 alcohols, 3 ketones, 1 acid, 1 ester and 1 anhydride) were identified in the two Rubus wines. The major volatile compounds of the wines were 2,3-butanediol, 2,5-furanedione, phenylethyl alcohol, and butanedioic acid and they might affect the major role in the unique flavor of Bokbunja wines.

  • To specify the standard of LASEK surgery, this study examined the determination factors affecting the high order aberrations (HOAs) in preoperative and postoperative LASEK. 51 adult patients (102 eyes) were evaluated at the baseline and 2 months after LASEK surgery from Nov 2011 to Jul 2012. The postoperative HOAs ($0.538{\mu}m$) were higher than the preoperative ($0.341{\mu}m$). In linear regression analysis, the refractive components that affected the postoperative HOAs were $J_0$ of corneal astigmatism (CA, 0.400), $J_0$ of refractive astigmatism (RA, 0.389), corneal astigmatism (CA, 0.282), spherical equivalent (SE, 0.239), refractive astigmatism (RA, 0.213), and pupil size (PS, 0.194) with a high R. In multiple regression, $J_0$ of CA, PS and SE were significant factors with the postoperative HOAs. In conclusion, both HOAs and $J_0$ of CA should be considered when determining the suitable factors for LASEK surgery.

  • In order to evaluate the hazardous effects of environmental tobacco smoking (ETS), we measured the concentrations of major aromatic VOC from those who decided to participate in a program to quit smoking. By acquiring the air samples both before and after quitting smoking (QS), we were able to compare their BTEX concentration levels in their breathing air. The results of our study clearly showed that BTEX levels in respiring air samples were significantly high prior to the QS period. It was found that toluene maintained the highest concentration levels both before and after the QS period. However, the level of reduction was most significant in the case of benzene, as it was decreased 10 times from 4.8 to 0.46 ppb. When their reduced BTEX levels are compared to those who never smoked before, differences were not significant enough to distinguish in statistical terms. The overall results of this preliminary study suggest that BTEX levels in breathing air samples can be used as one of the most sensitive signals to judge the effect of QS.

  • This study was conducted to measure Nitrogen(N), Phosphate($P_2O_5$), Potassium ($K_2O$), Organic matter(OM) and Moisture content of liquid pig manure by Near Infrared Spectroscopy(NIRS) and to develop an alternative and analytical instrument which are used for measurement of N, $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, OM, and Moisture contents for liquid pig manure. The liquid pig manure sample's transmittance spectra were measured with a NIRS in the wavelength range of 400 to 2,500 nm. Multiple linear regression and partial least square regression were used for calibrations. The correlation coefficient(RSQ) and standard error of calibration(SEC) obtained for nitrogen were 0.9190 and 2.1649, respectively. The RSQ for phosphate, potassium, organic matter and moisture contents were 0.9749, 0.5046, 0.9883 and 0.9777, and the SEC were 0.5019, 1.9252, 0.1180 and 0.0789, respectively. These results are indications of the rapid determination of components of liquid pig manure through the NIR analysis. The simple analytical instrument for liquid pig manure consisted of a tungsten halogen lamp for light source, a sample holder, a quartz cell, a SM 301 spectrometer for spectrum analyzer, a power supply, an electronics, a computer and a software. Results showed that the simple analytical instrument that was developed can approximately predict the phosphate, organic matter and moisture content of the liquid pig manure when compared to the analysis taken by NIRS. The low predictability value of potassium however, needs further investigation. Generally, the experiment proved that the simple analytical instrument was reliable, feasible and practical for analyzing liquid pig manure.

  • In the previous study, the anti-oxidant activity of oxtract/fraction of Sueada aspparagoides(SA) and the stability test for the cream containing SA extract were investigated respectively[1,2]. In this study, the components of SA extract were analyzed by TLC, HPLC, and LC/ESI-MS/MS, $^1H$-NMR. TLC chromatogram of ethyl acetate fraction of SA extract revealed 5 bands $(SA1{\sim}SA5)$. HPLC chromatogram of aglycone fractions obtained from deglycoylation reaction of ethyl acetate fraction showed 2 bands (SAA 2 and SAA 1), which were identified as quercetin (composition ratio, 16.88%) and kaempferol (83.12%) in the order of elution time. Among 5 bands of TLC chromatogram, 4 bands $(SA2{\sim}SA5)$ also were Identified as kaempferol-3-O-glucoside (SA 2), quercetin-3-O-glucoside (SA3), kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside (SA 4), quercetin-3-O-rutinoside (SA 5) by LC/ESI-MS/MSMS/MS. respectively. The spectrum generated for SAA 1 by LC/ESI-MS/MS in the negative ion mode also gave the ion corresponding to the deprotonated aglycone $[M-H]^-$ (285m/z), the $^1H$-NMR spectrum contained signals [${\delta}$ 6.19 (1H, d, J=1.8Hz, H-6), ${\delta}$ 6.44 (1H, d, J=1.8Hz, H-8), ${\delta}$ 6.92 (2H, d, J=9.0Hz, H-3', 5'), ${\delta}$ 8.04 (2H, d, J=9.0Hz, H-2', 6', thus SAA 1 was identified as kaempferol. SAA 2 yielded the deprotonated agycone ion $[M-H]^-$ (301m/z), $^1H$-NMR spectrum showed signals [${\delta}$ 6.20 (1H, d, J=2.0Hz, H-6), ${\delta}$ 6.42 (1H, d, J=2.0Hz, H-8), ${\delta}$ 6.90 (1H, d, J=8.6Hz, H-5'), ${\delta}$ 7.55 (1H, dd, J=8.6, 2.2Hz, H-6'), ${\delta}$ 7.69 (1H, d, J=2.2Hz, H-2', thus SAA 2 was Identified as quercetin. In conclusion, with the anti-oxidant activity and the stability test reported previously, component analysis of SA extracts could be applicable to new cosmeceuticals.
