  • In high temperature ceramic glazes, a stable range of pink-red colors that produced $Cr_2O_3-SnO_2-CaO-SiO_2$ pigments were factored by Cassiterite($SnO_2$) and Malayaite($CaSnSiO_5$) by $Cr_2O_3$. The experiment examined the influence of $CrCl_3$, a Sn-Cr substitution added with a mineralizer ($H_3BO_3$), as a chromophore in pigments. The experiment also studied the effect of $H_3BO_3$ (2 wt%) when added to malayaite($CaSnSiO_5$) to see if the crystalline reaction will increase. $Cr_2O_3$ was also substituted with $CrCl_3$ in order to prove how much influence $CrCl_3$ had on the $H_3BO_3$. Malayaite and cassiterite were the basic compound materials and the experiment was conducted both with and without mineralizers (2 wt% of $H_3BO_3$). Each compound was synthesized at 800, 1000, 1200, 1300, 1400, $1500^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Synthesized pigments were analyzed by XRD, FT-IR and UV-Vis. The temperature variation produced two crystal phases that showed the different engaging effects of Cr oxidation. $CrCl_3$ produced a better effect on the malayaite crystal phase, resulting in a more defined pigmentation of the pink-red coloration compared to $Cr_2O_3$.

  • In this study, low temperature sintering property of the $0.6TiTe_3O_8-0.4MgTiO_3$ ceramics with sintering adds were investigated for LTCC application which enable to cofiring with Ag electrode. $TiTe_3O_8$ mixed with $MgTiO_3$ to improve the temperature property. In the X-ray diffraction patterns, the columbite structure of $TiTe_3O_3$ phase and ilmenite structure of $MgTiO_3$ phase were coexisted in all specimens. In the case of $H_3BO_3$ addition, the bulk density and dielectric constant were decreased but quality factor was increased with amount of $H_3BO_3$ additions. The TCRF of the $0.6TiTe_3O_8-0.4MgTiO_3+xwt%H_3BO_3$ ceramics were moved to positive direction. In another case, SnO addition, the bulk density and dielectric constant were increased but Quality factor was decreased with amount of SnO additions. The TCRF of the $0.6TiTe_3O_8-0.4MgTiO_3$+ywt%SnO ceramics were shifted to negative direction. The dielectric constant, quality factor and TCRF of the $0.6TiTe_3O_8-0.4MgTiO_3$ ceramics with $2wt%H_3BO_3$ and 2.5wt%SnO sintered at $830^{\circ}C$ for 1h, were 28.5, 39,570GHz, $+9.34ppm/^{\circ}C$ and 29.86, 35,80000z, $-0.58ppm/^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Dolomite type $BaSn(BO_3)_2$ ceramics with rhombohedral crystal structure has been synthesized via solid state reaction route. Dielectric properties were measured for the samples sintered at $1050\~1200^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in air. Dielectric constant, loss tangent, and temperature coefficient were increased with sintering temperature due to the evolution of $BaSnO_3$, secondary, phase. Optimum dielectric properties were obtained at the $BaSn(BO_3)_2$ ceramics sintered at $1100^{\circ}C.\;CuO/Bi_2O_3$ was added to $BaSn(BO_3)_2$ ceramics to lower the sintering temperature for LTCC application, then Co and Fe-based coloring agents were added for colorizing the LTCC tape. Typical dielectric properties of $BaSn(BO_3)_2$ ceramics with $5 wt\%\;CuO/Bi_2O_3\;and\;3wt\%$ Co-coloring agent that sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ were $\varepsilon_r=9.89,\;tan{\delta}=0.92\times10^{-3},\;and\;TCC=112ppm/^{\circ}C$. Thus obtained LTCC tape was co-fired with Ag paste for compatibility test and revealed no sign of Ag reaction with the ceramics.

  • The Pt-, Ni- and Cr-decorated tubular $SnO_2$ nanofibers for gas sensors were prepared by the electrospinning of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanofibers containing Pt, Ni, and Cr precursors, the sputtering of $SnO_2$ on the electrospun PVP nanofibers, and the removal of sacrificial PVP parts by heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Pt-decorated tubular $SnO_2$ nanofibers showed high response ($R_a/R_g=210.5$, $R_g$: resistance in gas, $R_a$: resistance in air) to 5 ppm $C_2H_5OH$ at $350^{\circ}C$ with negligible cross-responses to other interference gases (5 ppm trimethylamine, $NH_3$, HCHO, p-xylene, toluene and benzene). Cr-decorated tubular $SnO_2$nanofibers showed the selective detection of p-xylene at $400^{\circ}C$. In contrast, no significant selectivity to a specific gas was found in Ni-decorated tubular $SnO_2$ nanofibers. The selective and sensitive detection of gases using Pt-decorated and Cr-decorated tubular $SnO_2$ nanofibers were discussed in relation to the catalytic promotion of gas sensing reaction.

  • The $SO_2$ reduction using CO and $H_2$ over Sn-Zr based catalysts was performed in this study. Sn-Zr based catalysts with Sn/Zr molar ratio (0/1, 1/4, 1/1, 2/1, 3/1, 1/0) were prepared by the precipitation and co-precipitation method. The effect of the temperature on the reaction characteristics of the $SO_2$ reduction with a reducing agent such as $H_2$ and CO was investigated under the conditions of space velocity of $10,000ml/g_{-cat.}h$, $([CO(or\;H_2)]/[SO_2])$ of 2.0. As a result, the activity of Sn-Zr based catalysts were higher than $SnO_2$ and $ZrO_2$. The reactivity for the $SO_2$ reduction with CO was higher than that with $H_2$, and sulfur yield in the $SO_2$ reduction by $H_2$ was higher than that by CO. The reactivity for the $SO_2$ reduction with $H_2$ was increased with the reaction temperature regardless of Sn-Zr based catalyst with a Sn/Zr molar ratio. $SnO_2-ZrO_2$ (Sn/Zr=1/4) had highest activity at $550^{\circ}C$, in the $SO_2$ reduction with $H_2$ and $SO_2$ conversion of 94.4% and sulfur yield of 66.4% were obtained at $550^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, in the $SO_2$ reduction by CO, the reactivity was decreased with the increase over $325^{\circ}C$. At the optimal temperature of $325^{\circ}C$, $SO_2$ conversion and sulfur yield were about 100% and 99.5%, respectively, in the $SO_2$ reduction over $SnO_2-ZrO_2$ (Sn/Zr=3/1). Also, the $SO_2$ reduction using syngas with $CO/H_2$ ratio over $SnO_2-ZrO_2$ (Sn/Zr=2/1) was performed in order to investigate the application possibility of the simulated coal gas as the reductant in DSRP. As a result, the reactivity of the $SO_2$ reduction using syngas with $CO/H_2$ ratio was increased with increasing the CO content of syngas. Therefore, it could be known that DSRP using the simulated coal gas over Sn-Zr based catalyst is possible to be realized in IGCC system

  • In this study, the reactivity of a $SnO_2-ZrO_2$(Sn/Zr = 2/1) catalyst for $SO_2$ reduction by CO was investigated in order to optimize the various reaction conditions such as temperature, gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), and [CO]/[$SO_2$] molar ratio. The reaction temperature in the range of $300{\sim}550^{\circ}C$, space velocity in the range of $5000{\sim}30000cm^3/[g_{-cat}{\cdot}h]$ and [CO]/[$SO_2$] molar ratio in the range of 1.0~4.0 were employed. The optimum temperature, GHSV, and [CO]/[$SO_2$] molar ratio were determined to be $325^{\circ}C$, $10000cm^3/[g_{-cat}{\cdot}h]$, and 2.0, respectively; under these conditions, $SO_2$ conversion was over 99% and sulfur selectivity was over 95%. In addition, the effect of $H_2O$ content on the $SO_2$ reduction by CO was also investigated. As the $H_2O$ content increased from 2 vol% up to 6 vol%, the reactivity and sulfur selectivity decreased. In case of 2 vol% $H_2O$ content, the reaction temperature and [CO]/[$SO_2$] molar ratio were varied in the range of $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ and 1.0~3.0. The optimum temperature and [CO]/[$SO_2$] molar ratio were $340^{\circ}C$ and 2.0, respectively under which $SO_2$ conversion and sulfur selectivity were about 90% and 87%, respectively.

  • Separation/recovery of valuable metals such as zinc, nickel or tin from copper alloy dross has recently attracted from the viewpoints of environmental protection and resource recycling. In this study, preliminary investigation on separation of tin (Sn) from copper alloy dross using selective dissolution method was performed. The tin in the copper alloy dross did not dissolve in an aqueous nitric acid solution which could allow the concentration/separation of tin from the copper alloy dross. Precipitation of tin as $H_2SnO_3$ (meta stannic acid)occurred in the solution and transformed to tin dioxide ($SnO_2$) after drying process. The dried sample was heat-treated at low temperature and its crystal structure, surface morphology and chemical composition were investigated.
