A constructed sea stream in Yeongdo, Busan, Republic of Korea is mostly static due to the lifted stream bed and tidal characters, and receives domestic wastewater nearby, causing a consistent odor production and water quality degradation. Bioaugmentation of a microbial consortium was proposed as an effective and economical restoration technology to restore the polluted stream. The microbial consortium activated on site was augmented on a periodic basis (7~10 days) into the most polluted site (Site 2) which was chosen considering the pollution level and tidal movement. Physicochemical parameters of water qualities were monitored including pH, temperature, DO, ORP, SS, COD, T-N, and T-P. COD and microbial community analyses of the sediments were also performed. A significant reduction in SS, COD, T-N, and COD (sediment) at Site 2 occurred showing their removal rates 51%, 58% and 27% and 35%, respectively, in 13 months while T-P increased by 47%. In most of the test sites, population densities of sulfate reducing bacterial (SRB) groups (Desulfobacteraceae_uc_s, Desulfobacterales_uc_s, Desulfuromonadaceae_uc_s, Desulfuromonas_g1_uc, and Desulfobacter postgatei) and Anaerolinaeles was observed to generally decrease after the bioaugmentation while those of Gamma-proteobacteria (NOR5-6B_s and NOR5-6A_s), Bacteroidales_uc_s, and Flavobacteriales_uc_s appeared to generally increase. Aerobic microbial communities (Flavobacteriaceae_uc_s) were dominant in St. 4 that showed the highest level of DO and least level of COD. These microbial communities could be used as an indicator organism to monitor the restoration process. The alpha diversity indices (OTUs, Chao1, and Shannon) of microbial communities generally decreased after the augmentation. Fast uniFrac analysis of all the samples of different sites and dates showed that there was a similarity in the microbial community structures regardless of samples as the augmentation advanced in comparison with before- and early bioaugmentation event, indicating occurrence of changing of the indigenous microbial community structures. It was concluded that the bioaugmentation could improve the polluted water quality and simultaneously change the microbial community structures via their niche changes. This in situ remediation technology will contribute to an eco-friendly and economically cleaning up of polluted streams of brine water and freshwater.
In this study, adsorption characteristics of coconut shell-based granular activated carbon (CS-GAC) on Basic Blue 3 (BB3) were evaluated. As the dosage of CS-GAC increased, the removal efficiency of BB3 tended to increase and the initial dye concentration of 50 mg/L was completely removed at 0.2 g dosage. Adsorption equilibrium achieved within 270 and 420 min at the initial concentrations of 25 and 50 mg/L, respectively, and the experimental data were represented by the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum uptakes ($q_{max}$) predicted by the Langmuir model were 34.45, 46.63 and 53.10 mg/g at 298, 308 and 318 K, respectively. The $q_{max}$ value increased as the temperature increased. Also, the Gibbs free energy (${\Delta}G$) was changed to -7.37, -8.19 and -10.40 kJ/mol with increasing temperature. The enthalpy change (${\Delta}H$) and the entropy change (${\Delta}S$) were 34.47 kJ/mol and 0.15 J/mol K, respectively. Therefore adsorption of BB3 by CS-GAC was spontaneous and endothermic.

Nonylphenols are toxic compounds classified as endocrine disruptors. We investigated the nonylphenols clean-up procedures for the contamination control in the quantitative analysis. In this research we analyzed the residual nonylphenols in the solvent and the SPE cartridges. First, at the analysis of HPLC grade solvents (n-hexane, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate and its mixture), diethyl ether was confirmed the residue as 0.963 ${\mu}g/mL$, and we eliminated the contaminant through the distillation with $CaH_2$, Second, at the analysis of SPE cartridges (silica gel and Florisil), all products were showed the residue at 0.046~13.0 ${\mu}g/mL$, but unfortunately the residue in the cartridge were not easily removed with referenced methods in all tested SPE cartridges except in silica gel SPE cartridge with glass ware.
Natural manganese ore was selected as main active component for a non-zinc desulfurization sorbent used in the gas clean-up process of the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) because of excellent H$_2$S removal efficiency and economical aspect . In this study, the regeneration characteristics of sorbent after desulfurization reaction were determined in a thermobalance reactor and a fixed bed reactor in the temperature range of 350~55$0^{\circ}C$. The mixed gases of oxygen and nitrogen are used as the regeneration reaction gases for manganese sorbent. According to Mn-S-O phase diagram, the manganese sorbent has a low regeneration efficiency in medium temperature due to formation of MnSO$_4$ and the regeneration temperature must be over 85$0^{\circ}C$. To improve that problem, ammonia and steam was added in regeneration mixed gases. Effect of new regeneration method was determined by XRD and difference of desulfurization through multicycle tests.
Authors was experienced a case of mucocele in the left frontal sinus. A 24-years-old Korean male soldier was admitted to C.A.F.G.H. on 16th May 1980, with chief complaints of dull headache, exophthalmos, visual disturbance and intermittent epistaxis on the left side. On physical examination, left turbinates and septum were revealed hyperemic middle turbinate with blood tinged spots and deviated slightly to right side, and felt round, smooth, rubbery painless swelling within the orbit at the left inner canthus. The left orbital contents was displaced laterally producing proptosis with diplopia. On the radiological examination, Caldwell and Water's view showed hazy density in medial side of left orbital and left frontal sinus. Tomography of orbit showed hazy increased mass density with rather sharply defined outer margin of left bony orbit probably due to compressive erosion. The case was treated with surgical removal of the Lynch frontal approach, so present this case with a brief review of the literature.

The supply of microbiological risk-free water is essential to keep food safety and public hygiene. And removal, inactivation, and destruction of microorganisms in drinking water are key for ensuring safety in the food industry. Ultraviolet-C (UV-C) irradiation is an attractive method for efficient disinfection of water without generating toxicity and adversely affecting human health. In this study, the disinfection efficiencies of UV-C irradiation on Shigella flexneri (Gram negative) and Listeria monocytogenes (Gram positive) at various concentrations in drinking water were evaluated using a water purifier. Their morphological and physiological characteristics after UV-C irradiation were observed using fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry combined with live/dead staining. UV-C irradiation (254 nm wavelength, irradiation dose: 40 mJ/cm2) at a water flow velocity of 3.4 L/min showed disinfection ability on both bacteria up to 108 CFU/4 L. And flow cytometric analysis showed different physiological shift between S. flexneri and L. monocytogenes after UV-C irradiation, but no significant shift of morphology in both bacteria. In addition, each bacterium revealed different characteristics with time-course observation after UV-C irradiation: L. monocytogenes dramatically changed its physiological feature and seemed to reach maximum damage at 4 h and then recovered, whereas S. flexneri seemed to gradually die over time. This study revealed that UV-C irradiation of water purifiers is effective in disinfecting microbial contaminants in drinking water and provides basic information on bacterial features/responses after UV-C irradiation.
Effects of weed removal time on maize growth and yield were evaluated in the fields dominated with Poligonum spp., Chenopodium album, Echinochloa crusgalli and Digitaria adsendens from 1982 to 1983 in Suweon. Weed removal treatments were as follows: (a) kept weedfree all season, (b) weeded at 10 day intervals after maize emergence but stopped weeding at 3,5,7,9 leaf stages, (c) weeds initially removed at 3,5,7 and 9 leaf stages and the plots then kept weed free, (d) weeds left all season. Maize kept weed free from maize emergence to 7 leaf stages showed no grain yield reduction due to competition from weeds emerging later, but weeding from emergence to 3 and 5 leaf stages reduced grain yield 46 and 44%, respectively, in 1982 and 29 and 18%, respectively, in 1983. Weeding at 3 leaf stage and thereafter did not influence grain yield but initial weedings at 5, 7 and 9 leaf stages reduced grain yield 10, 36, and 67%, respectively, in 1982 and 14,18, and 21%, respectively, in 1983. Responses of maize to weeding time in the dry matter yields were same as in the grain yields.
High concentration of $NH_3$, $CO_2$, and lots of dust are found in modern densely raising stall system, as results, they provide a negative influence on animal and lamer health, and production ability. Therefore, it is necessary to keep clean the inside of stall air to increase the productivity. A wet type air cleaner has been developed to clean the stall air. The work principle is that the inside air are sucked through the fan, and the rotating discs make a water into a fineness spray and blows into the stall. The spray can take the dust, $NH_3$, and odor from the stall inside air and give back to the circulating water, which can be refreshed in 2 hours interval. In the Present study, we measured the $NH_3$, dust, odor, temperature and humidity in a swine stall that were installed two wet air cleaners with 700 fattening swine with on-mode and off-mode of wet air cleaners. In fall, the concentrations of $NH_3$ in off-mode stall were maximum 24 ppm and minimum 16 prm, and the average was 18.2 ppm. However in on-mode stall the $NH_3$ concentrations were maximum 7ppm and minimum 1ppm, and the average was 2.7ppm. The concentration of $NH_3$ in on-mode was 74% lower than off-mode stall. Odor was measured by olfactometer. In the off-mode stall, the odor unit was 3,800 OU/$m^3$, but in the on-mode stall the odor unit was 2,100 OU/$m^3$ Odor removal efficiency was about 45% in on-mode stall. The dust measure was divided into 3 categories, $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{1.0}$. Whereas the $PM_{10}$ showed no significant differences between the tests, $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{1.0}$ in the fine particle range reduced remarkably in the on-mode.

In this study, a wet cleaning process, P II, using aqua-regia and sulfuric acid mixture with oxidant agent ($K_2S_2O_8$, $P_2O_5$, $KMnO_4$, $H_2O_2$ etc) is proposed to remove the metastable phase of graphite such as graphene and DLC for high quality synthetic diamonds. The process employed the conventional acid cleaning process (P I) as well as P I+P II to remove the graphite related impurities from the 200um-diamond powders synthesized at 7GPa-$1500^{\circ}C$-5minutes. The degree of cleaning after P I and P I+P II has been observed by naked-eye, optical microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and TGA-DTA. After P I+P II, the color of diamond became more vividly yellow with enhanced saturation with naked eye and optical microscopy analysis. Moreover, the disappearance of diamond-like-carbon (DLC) peak ($1440cm^{-1}$) observed by Raman spectroscopy confirmed the decrease in amount of remaining impurities. TGA-DTA results showed that the graphite impurities first started to dissolve at $770.91^{\circ}C$ after PI process. However, the pyrolysis started at $892.18^{\circ}C$ after P I+P II process because of the dissolution of pure diamonds. This result proved the effective dissolution of the metastable phase of graphite. We expect that the proposed P II process may enhance the quality of diamonds through effective removal of surface impurities.
A U.S EPA Synthetic soil matrix was used for reference neat soil and pyrene contaminated soil. For the contaminated soil, 4.79 wt.% pyrene was dissolved completely into the djchlorornethane, and the soil was evenly soaked with the pyrene solution. The contaminated soil samples(50$\pm$0.5mg) were heated in a modified electrical screen heater reactor which consisted of a thin stainless foil (3.5cm$\times$13cm$\times$0.00254cm, 302 stainless steel shim), two electrodes, and a 20cm dia. $\times$30cm tall cylindrical Pyrex chamber sealed at both ends by aluminum flanges. The heating rate and time conditions were selected as $455^{\circ}C$ @ $1137^{\circ}C$ /s, $760^{\circ}C$ @ $950^{\circ}C$ /s and $977^{\circ}C$ @ $977^{\circ}C$/s. Tar samples after heating the soils were collected on the aluminum foil funnel and a glass filter paper (25mm dia. filter paper) The tar sample and remnant soil on the reactor were extracted with dichloromethane covering the filters, foils and soil by sonicating each in the waterbath for 10 minutes. The extractions were run on a HPLC. At the low peak temperature(about $455^{\circ}C$ @ $1137^{\circ}C$/s) the color of tar was "white", at the middle peak temperature (about 76$0^{\circ}C$ @ 95$0^{\circ}C$/s) the color of tar was "pink brown", at the high peak temperature (about 977$^{\circ}C$ @ 977$^{\circ}C$/s) the color of tar was "dark brown". Cyclopeta(cd)pyrene (CPEP) , which is an interesting species due to mutagenic effect on human cells, was detected in tar samples only above the middle peak temperature. This species was not detected at the low peak temperature. Six isomers of bipyrene were detected. Phenanthrene(C$_{14}$$H_{10}$) and cyclopenta(def)phenanthrene(C$_{15}$$H_{10}$) were also detected, but their content was very small relative to the other listed compounds.to the other listed compounds.
