  • In general, livestock wastewater consists of many pollutants such as nitrogen, phosphorus, carbonic compounds and inorganic substances. Most carbonic and organic compounds are sufficiently removed by conventional secondary processes, but nitrogen, phosphorus and soluble inorganic compounds are little removed by traditional clarification process. These remained substances in wastewater, for instances, phosphorus and nitrogen are efficiently eliminated by advanced wastewater treatment or botanical removing process. Concentrations of $BOD_s$, SS, T-N and T-P in influent livestock wastewater used in this study were 126mg/l, 115mg/l, 45mg/l and 13mg/l, respectively. The hydraulic retention time(HRT) of wastewater was about 10 days in the pond packed with aquatic plants. A water-hyacinth and a water-dropwort were used as an experimental stuff plant. The removal ratios of nitrogen was 44.3% for the water-hyacinth and 40.2% for the water-dropwort. The removal efficiency of phosphorus in experimental ponds reached by 57.9% for the water-hyacinth and 58.5% for the water-dropwort for 10 days, respectively. Removal ratios of BODs and SS of livestock wastewater for 10 days were reached by 80.1%, 91.0% for he water-hyacinth, respectively. At the same condition, the removal ratios of BODs and SS were reached by 75.0%, 87.6% for the water-dropwort, respectively.

  • The effect of reductive treatment with elemental iron on the extent of mineralization by Fenton oxidation was studied for the explosive 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and hexahydro-l,3,5-trinitro-l,3,5-triazine (RDX) using a completely-stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The results support the hypothesis that TNT and RDX are reduced with elemental iron to products that are oxidized more rapidly and completely by Fenton's reagent. Iron pretreatment enhanced the extent of TOC removal by approximately $20\%\;and\;60\%$ for TNT and RDX, respectively. Complete TOC removal was achieved for TNT and RDX solutions with iron pretreatment under optimal conditions. On the other hand, without iron pretreatment, complete mineralization of TNT and RDX solutions were not achieved even with much higher $H_2O_2$ and $Fe^{2+}$ concentrations. The bench-scale iron treatment-Fenton oxidation integrated system showed more than $95\%$ TOC removal for TNT and RDX solutions under optimal conditions. The proposed zero-valent iron-Fenton process was evaluated with pink water from the Iowa Army ammunition plant. Results from batch and column experiments show that TNT, RDX, and octahydro-l,3,5,7-tetranitro-l,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) were completely removed from the pink water and that triaminotoluene (TAT) and ${NH_4}^+$ were recovered as products in reduction with zero-valent iron. By using an integrated system, $83.3\pm4.2\%$ of TOC was removed in a CSTR with 10 mM of $Fe^{2+}$ and 50 mM of $H_2O_2$. These results suggest that the reduction products of TNT and RDX are more rapidly and completely mineralized by Fenton oxidation and that a sequential iron treatment-Fenton oxidation process may be a viable technology for pink water treatment.

  • This study was performed to study the photocatalyst for controlling the pollutant such as CO, C2H5OH and H2S by the UV light. This was shown in a catalyst having the same volume and the same surface area, that the structure in which the UV light to reach the interior structure exhibits more excellent activity. However, the activity of this activity of this photocatalyst removal of CO was very low. This problem can be solved by performing a reduction process by the addition of the precious metal series of Pt. Particularly, the amount of chemical species Pt0 incerased in the surface of Pt/TiO2 photocatalyst through the reduction process, which make the reaction activity of photocatalyst excellent to the removal of the CO.

  • The objective of this study was to develop kinetic model for the MBR and investigate kinetic characteristics of the gravitational flow transverse direction MBR system. Kinetic model was derived by mass balance of substratc and biomass combined with empirical membranc filtration rerm for the MBR. To find kinctic values, permeale flux and COD removal were analyzed through the laboratory, MBR operation as different solids retention times. Permeate flux was ranged 2.5-5.0 LMH (L/m$^2$/hr) as sludge characteristics in each run. Although the soluble COD in the bioreactor was changed, the effluent COD was stable as average 99% removal rate during the experimental periods. Y$_g$ of this MBR system was higher than those of cross-flow MBR processes. The kinetics of this MBR showed that smaller k, larger b, and larger K$_s$ values than the conventional activated sludge process. These results indicated that substrate was used for cell maintenance rather than growth in this MBR system.

  • The feasibility of applying coagulation-integrated microfiltration (MF) as a pretreatment for an ultrafiltration (UF) feed in oily wastewater treatment was investigated. The effects of different coagulants on oil removal rates from wastewater were studied. The maximum oil removal rate of 82% was obtained after coagulation with 130 mg/L of polyaluminium chloride (PAC). UF flux reached $95L/(m^2{\cdot}h)$ with coagulation-integrated MF as pretreatment. This value was 2.5 times higher than that flux obtained without pretreatment. The value of UF flux increased as the transmembrane pressure (TMP) and cross-flow velocity (CFV) of the UF module increased. UF flux gradually increased when TMP and CFV exceeded 0.4 MPa and 3 m/s, respectively, because of concentration polarization and membrane fouling stabilization. Chemical oxygen demand reduction and oil removal rate reached 95.2% and 98.5%, respectively, during integrated membrane processing with a PAC concentration of 130 mg/L, TMP of 0.4 MPa, and CFV of 3 m/s for UF. In addition, sequentially cleaning the fouling membrane with NaOH and $HNO_3$ aqueous solutions caused UF flux to recover to 90%. These encouraging results suggested that the hybrid integrated membrane process-based coagulation and MF + UF are effective approaches for oily wastewater treatment.

  • The operational parameters and control strategies of a tertiary wastewater treatment process a biological filtration system were investigated. The biological filtration system consisted of a nitrification filter (Fiter 1) and a polishing filter with anoxic and aerobic parts (Filter 2). SS, T-C-BOD, and T-N in effluent were kept stable at less than 3, 5 mg/L, and 5 mgN/L, respectively, under a HRT in Filter (filter-bed) of 0.37~2.3 h. T-N at the outlet of Filter 2 were about 1~5 mgN/L under the condition of LV of 50~202 m/d. Methanol addition was controlled based on the COD/N ratio or McCarty's equation. Constant COD/N ratio control results in excess addition under large diurnal fluctuation of $NOx^--N$, and McCarty's equation can be used to add appropriate amount of methanol. Control of methanol addition by on-line nitrate measurement, control of aeration by on-line DO measurement, and control of backwashing by head loss measurement are successfully operated. These results proved that this process prove the easy-maintenance and cost-effectively treatment is attainable.

  • To treat wastewater efficiently by a one-step process of nitrogen removal, a new strain of $N_2-producing$ bacteria from $NH{_4}{^+}$ under an aerobic condition was isolated and identified. By 16S-rDNA analysis, the isolate was identified as Enterobacter asburiae with 96% similarity. The isolate shows that the capacity of $N_2$ production under an oxic condition was approximately three times higher than that under an anoxic condition. The optimal conditions (pH, temperature and C/N ratio) of the immobilized isolate for $N_2$ production were found to be 7.0, $30^{\circ}C$ and 5, respectively. Under all the optimum reaction conditions, the removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ and TN reached 56.1 and 60.9%, respectively. The removal rates of $COD_{Cr}$ and TN were highest for the first 2.5 hrs (with the removal $COD_{Cr}$ ratios of 32.1), and afterwards the rates decreased as reaction proceeded. For application of the immobilized isolate to a practical process of ammonium removal, a continuous bioreactor system exhibited a satisfactory performance at HRT of 12.1 hr, in which the effluent concentrations of $NH{_4}{^+}-N$ was measured to be 15.4 mg/L with its removal efficiency of 56.0%. The maximum removal rate of $NH{_4}{^+}-N$ reached 1.6 mg $NH{_4}{^+}-N/L/hr$ at HRT of 12.1 hr (with N loading rate of 0.08 $Kg-N/m^3-carrier/d)$. As a result, the application of the immobilized isolate appears a viable alternative to the nitrification-denitrification processes.

  • In this study, we used activated carbon(AC) as a carbon source, along with zeolite, to prepare spherical carbons using sucrose, starch and phenolic resin(PR) as binder material. The physicochemical characteristics of the three samples(AZ4P, AZ6P and AZ8P) were examined by BET, XRD, SEM, EDX, $H_2S/NH_3$ gas adsorption, compressive strength and ignition test techniques. Through comparative analysis of the compressive strength and ignition test results the AZ8P sample was found to have the best hardness and the highest temperature resistance capacity. After activation, the AZ8P sample had the best $H_2S$ adsorption capacity, and AZ6P was the most suitable for the adsorption of ammonia.

  • A study on the removal of heavy metals using sawdust was performed. Among heavy metals such as lead, copper and cadmium ions, uptake capacity of lead ions was the highest as about 0.22 mmol/g-dry mass at pH 4. The surface condition and existence of lead ions onto the sawdust was confirmed by the FT-IR, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), and EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray) instrumental analyses. When 0.5g of sawdust was added to initial lead solution (100ppm) removal efficiency was approximately 90%. Isothermal adsorption curve for lead ions was described by the Langmuir model equation and experimental data well fitted to model equation. Most adsorption for lead ions was also completed within 60min and pH of lead solution from 5.8 to 4.5 decreased with time.

  • In this study, optimization research was conducted through statistical analysis with the aim of maximizing the efficiency of organic matter reduction and hydrogen production by applying electrolysis process at sewage treatment plant. Statistical analysis and optimal operating conditions of organic matter removal efficiency and H2 generation, which varied with various conditions in the electrolysis process, were derived using response surface methodology. As a result, 1,268 μS/cm of conductivity, 350 A current, and pH 3.2 was found to be the optimum condition to reach the desired value as 38% of organic matter reduction and 2.58 L/min of H2 production. The experiment also determined that the optimization study was reliable. Base on this study, it was confirmed that the removal of organic matter and hydrogen production could be stably by applying the electrolysis process in the sewage treatment plant.
