High Temperature Corrosion of Cr(III) Coatings in N2/0.1%H2S Gas

  • Chromium was coated on a steel substrate by the Cr(III) electroplating method, and corroded at $500-900^{\circ}C$ for 5 h in $N_2/0.1%H_2S-mixed$ gas to study the high-temperature corrosion behavior of the Cr(III) coating in the highly corrosive $H_2S-environment$. The coating consisted of (C, O)-supersaturated, nodular chromium grains with microcracks. Corrosion was dominated by oxidation owing to thermodynamic stability of oxides compared to sulfides and nitrides. Corrosion initially led to formation of the thin $Cr_2O_3$ layer, below which (S, O)-dissolved, thin, porous region developed. As corrosion progressed, a $Fe_2Cr_2O_4$ layer formed below the $Cr_2O_3$ layer. The coating displayed relatively good corrosion resistance due to formation of the $Cr_2O_3$ scale and progressive sealing of microcracks.

  • Oxidation of $[Mo_2O_4(C_2O_4)_2(OH_2)_2]^{2-}$ with hydrogen chromate yields the molybdenum (VI) complex, $[Mo_2O_4(C_2O_4)_2(OH_2)_2]^{2-}$. Stoichiometry for the reaction of $[Mo_2O_4(C_2O_4)_2(OH_2)_2]^{2-}$ with hydrogen chromate are expressed as ${3Mo_2}^V+2Cr^{VI}\;{\rightleftharpoons}\;{3Mo_2}_{VI}+2Cr^{III}$. Observed rate constants are dependent on $[H+]^2$. The kinetic data are consistent with a mechanism in which three successive single-electron steps convert $Cr^{VI}$to $Cr^{III}$ by way of intermediate Cr^V$ and $Cr^{IV}$. Mechanism of the reaction are presented and discussed.

  • The microstructure and electrical properties of $ZnO-Pr_{6}$$O_{11}$ $-CoO-Y_2$$O_3$-based varistors were investigated with and without various metal oxide additives (NiO, MgO, and $Cr_2$$O_3$). The addition of NiO promoted the grain growth while that of Cr$_2$O$_3$ decreased average grain size. Thereby, the varistor voltage was higher in $Cr_2$$O_3$-added composition. Among $ZnO-Pr_{6}$ $O_{11}$ /$-CoO-Y_2$$O_3$-based varistors, the$ Cr_2$$O_3$-added varistor exhibited the highest nonlinear exponent (51.2), the lowest leakage current (1.3 $\mu$A), and the lowest dielectric dissipation factor (0.0433).

  • Mixtures Of AUC-UO$_2$and Gd$_2$O$_3$ Powders doped With Cr$_2$O$_3$ or Cr$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$ were Pressed and sintered at 1730 t in hydrogen gas witk various water-vapor contents. The density of UO$_2$- 6wt% Gd$_2$O$_3$ pellets can be increased from 91% TD to 94.5% TD in 1 vol% $H_2O$-H$_2$ gases by the addition of 0.02wt% Cr$_2$O$_3$-(0.01~0.04) wt% SiO$_2$. The magnitude of density increase is much larger in (1~3 vol%) $H_2O$-H$_2$ gases than in 0.05 vol% $H_2O$-H$_2$ gas. The densification of U0$_2$- Gd$_2$O$_3$ compact is significantly delayed in the temperature range between 1300 and 1500 t , but that of compacts with Cr$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$ is not. The role of Cr$_2$O$_3$ and SiO$_2$ in densification is discussed.

  • 결정질 TiCrN과 AlSiN 나노층이 교대로 구성하는 나노 다층 TiAlCrSiN 박막은 음극 아크 플라즈마 증착법에 의해 증착되었다. 나노 다층 TiAlCrSiN 박막의 산화특성들은 $600{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$사이에서 대기 중 최대 70시간동안 연구 되었다. 형성된 산화물들은 주로 $Cr_2O_3$, ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2$ 그리고 rutile-$TiO_2$들로 구성되었다. 나노 다층 TiAlCrSiN 박막이 산화하는 동안, 가장 바깥쪽의 $TiO_2$층은 Ti 이온의 외부확산에 의해, 외부 $Al_2O_3$층은 Al이온의 외부확산에 의해 형성되었다. 동시에, 내부($Al_2O_3$, $Cr_2O_3$) 혼합층과 가장 안쪽의 $TiO_2$층은 산소이온의 내부확산에 의해 형성되었다.

Exchange Bias in Cr2O3/Fe3O4 Core/Shell Nanoparticles

  • We report the exchange bias in antiferromagnet/ferrimagnet $Cr_2O_3/Fe_3O_4$ core/shell nanoparticles. The magnetic field hysteresis curve for $Cr_2O_3/Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles after field-cooling (FC) clearly showed both horizontal ($H_{EB}{\sim}$610 Oe) and vertical (${\Delta}M{\sim}$5.6 emu/g) shifts at 5 K. These shifts disappeared as the temperature increased toward the Neel temperature of $Cr_2O_3\;(T_N{\sim}$307 K). The $H_{EB}\;and\;{\Delta}M$ values were sharply decreased between the $1^{st}\;and\;the\;2^{nd}$ magnetic field cycles, and then slowly decreased with further cycling. These results are discussed in terms of the formation of single domains with pinned, uncompensated, antiferromagnetic spin and their evolution into multi-domains with cycling.

Sorption and Thermal Characteristics of $AsO_4,\;SeO_3,\;CrO_4$ on Schwertmannite (슈베르트마나이트의 $AsO_4,\;SeO_3,\;CrO_4$ 흡착 및 열적 특성)

  • The sorption of $AsO_4,\;SeO_3,\;CrO_4$ on schwertmannite and thermal analysis of sorbed samples were carried out. The results of sorption experiments showed that sorption characteristics of those three oxyanions on schwertmannite can be divided into two groups. The extent of sorption of $AsO_4$ and $SeO_3$ were 100% at up to 1 mM solution concentration, and they increased no more significantly. This can be interpreted as $AsO_4$ and $SeO_3$ substituting $SO_4$ in schwertmannite strucure by the ratio of 1 : 1. The extent of the sorption of $CrO_4$ was much lower than those of other two oxyanions. Thermal analysis was performed using two kinds of sorbed samples at 0.1 and 1.25 mM concentrations. The results of the thermal analysis showed that the samples sorbed by three different oxyanions have different thermal characteristics. The samples sorbed by $AsO_4$ showed smaller weight loss around $600^{\circ}C$ than the original loss of pure schwertmannite, and it is attributed to the substitution of $AsO_4$ for $SO_4$, which was caused by the loss of $SO_4$, than pure schwertmannite due to the substitution of $SO_4$ by $AsO_4$. It also showed additional weight loss around $600^{\circ}C$ due to the decomposition of $AsO_4$ at that temperature. The weight loss of samples sorbed by $SeO_3$ started at slightly lower temperature than that sorbed by $SO_4$ and kept that loss at wider temperature range, probably indicating that the decomposition of $SeO_3$ occurs at slightly lower temperature. However, for the samples sorbed by $CrO_4$, the weight loss caused by the decomposition of $SO_4$ was also smaller and there was no additional weight loss at higher temperature due to the thermal stability of $CrO_4$, indicating that $SO_4$ was also substituted by $CrO_4$ in schwertmannite. Sorption experiment and thermal analysis indicate that $CrO_4$ sorbs on schwertmannite by substiuting $SO_4$, but the affinity to $SO_4$ or instability of $CrO_4$ in scwertmannite structure probably prohibit perfect 1 : 1 substitution.

Characterization of Oxide Scales Formed on Fe3Al, Fe3Al-Cr, Fe3Al-Cr-Mo, Ni3Al and Ni3Al-Cr Alloys (Fe3Al, Fe3Al-Cr, Fe3Al-Cr-Mo, Ni3Al 및 Ni3Al-Cr 합금표면에 형성된 산화물 특성분석)

  • Alloys of $Fe_3$Al, $Fe_3$Al-6Cr, $Fe_3$Al-4Cr-1Mo, $Ni_3$Al, and $Ni_3$Al-2.8Cr were oxidized at $1000^{\circ}C$ in air, and the oxide scales formed were studied using XRD. SEM, EPMA, and TEM. The oxide scales that formed on $Fe_3$Al-based alloys consisted primarily of $\alpha$-$Al_2$$O_3$ containing a small amount of dissolved Fe and Cr ions, whereas those that formed on $Ni_3$Al-based alloys consisted primarily of $\alpha$-$Al_2$$O_3$, together with a small amount of $NiAl_2$$O_4$, NiO and dissolved Cr ions. For the entire alloys tested, nonadherent oxide scales formed, and voids were inevitably existed at the scale-matrix interface.

Protective Coatings for Application of Fe-l6Cr Ferritic Alloy as an Interconnector in SOFCs (고체산화물 연료전지용 금속접속자로의 적용을 위한 Fe-16Cr 페라이트 합금의 내산화막 코팅)

  • We studied oxidation behaviors of anti-oxidative Y-Cr oxide coated sol on ferritic steel for application of the Fe-Cr alloys as interconnectors of planar-type Solid Oxide Fuel Cells(SOFCs). In coated$YCrO_3$on the ferritic steel, the phases of $YCrO_3$,$Cr_2O_3$and $Mn_{1.5}Cr_{1.5}O_4$on the coated surface were detected, but iron base scales were not observed after oxidation at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 40 h. The Mn-Cr oxide scales were grown with oxidation by diffusing components in the ferritic steel from inner. The Log(ASR/T) value that expresses electrical resistance of coated$YCrO_3$on the ferritic steel was -4.57~$-4.70{omega}cm^2K^{-1}$, lower in comparison with the one of the uncoated ferritic steel,$-3.99{omega}cm^2K^{-1}$. This indicates the applicability of Fe-l6Cr alloy as interconnector materials for SOFCs.

Hot Corrosion of NiCrAlY/(ZrO2-CeO2-Y2O3) Composite Coatings in Molten Salt (내열복합코팅 NiCrAlY/(ZrO2-CeO2-Y2O3)의 용융염 부식)

  • (Ni-22Cr-10Al-1Y)와 ($ZrO_2-25CeO_2-2.5Y_2O_3$)로 구성되는 금속/세라믹 복합코팅을 대기용사(ASP; air plasma spay)으로 철 기판위에 1:3, 2:2, 3:1의 무게비로 혼합하여 제조하였다. 용사된 코팅은 금속이영지역과 세라믹잉여지역으로 구별되고, 용사중에 NiCrAlY중의 Al이 선택적으로 산화되어 Al2O3가 계면에 존재하였다. 복합코팅은 $NaCl-Na_2SO_4$ 용융염에서 $800{\sim}900^{\circ}C$, 50시간 동안 부식실험을 실시하였다. 부식생성물은 NiO, $Cr_2O_3$, ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$가 생성되는데, 부식이 진행되면서 용해되었다. 용융염 부식이 진행되는 동안에 Cr, Al이 외방확산하였고, Na, Cl, S는 내부로 확산되었다. 시간 및 온도뿐만 아니라 금속의 양이 증가할수록 코팅의 내식성은 저하되었다.
