A Study on Characteristics of Exhaust Emissions from Domestic Used Diesel Engines (國産 디이젤機關의 汚染物質 排出特性에 關한 硏究)

  • In odrder to survey the emission level of air pollutants from diesel vehicles, was measured CO, HC, NOx and smoke of 4 types of domestic-use diesel engines under various conditions. The emission of CO, HC and NOx tested by 6-Mode test method and smoke emission by full load test met the permissible vehicle emission standard. Pollutant emission rates of diesel engines were different according to engine operating conditions, that is, engine load and engine speed. Generally, CO and HC was emitted more at low load and NOx at high load but the trend was quite different by the type of engines. In exhaust gas, $NO_2$ portion of NOx emission was high, specially at low speed and low load. The correlation equation between CLD(NOx) and NDIR(NO) method of nitrogen of nitrogen oxides analysis was y = 1.10x - 3.48 (y: CLD method) as a result of 6-mode test.

  • Emissions of leachate, odor, and landfill gas(LFG) from an open-dumping landfill site do harm to public health by contaminating neighboring soil, underground water, and rivers. Particularly, methane($CH_4$) and carbon dioxide($CO_2$), the main components of LFG, are especially noted as the causing material of the global warming that become seriously recognized worldwide issue. As one of alternatives in managing LFG, incineration of inflammable wastes that are generated during excavation process at an open-dumping landfill has been evaluated. Standard on stabilization for evaluation, neither $CH_4$ density nor $CO_2$ density could not Because meet 'less than 5%' criterion and so it is right to install a gas collection system during landfill renewal to prevent diffusion of odor and collect it. Because it shows considerable heating value, incineration of inflammable wastes might be the reasonable solution from the result of our study.

Simultaneous Analysis of Antimicrobial Three Straight Chain 1,2-alkanediols in Cosmetics by Gas Chromatography (가스크로마토그래피를 이용한 화장품 중 항균작용의 3종의 직쇄상 1,2-알칸디올류의 동시분석)

  • Preservatives such as paraben, phenoxyethanol, and chlorphene are commonly used in cosmetics thanks to cheap price and good antiseptic effect. Recently, consumers' concerns about their possible toxicity and skin irritation forced them to be replaced with straight 1,2-alkanediols. However, as the alkanediols may also irritate skin, limited amount of them should be used in cosmetics. Three 1,2-alkanediols including 1,2-pentanediol, 1,2-hexanediol, and 1,2-octanediol in cosmetics were analyzed simultaneously by gas chromatogrphy with flame ionization detector. As a result of method validation, the specificity was confirmed by the calibration curves of 1,2-pentanediol, 1,2-hexanediol, and 1,2-octanediol showing good linearity correlation coefficient of above 0.999 over the concentration range of $100{\sim}1,200{\mu}g/g$. The limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of 1,2-pentanediol, 1,2-hexanediol, and 1,2-octanediol were 31, 40, and $19{\mu}g/g$ and 98, 108, and $57{\mu}g/g$, respectively. The precision (Repeatability) of the amount in cosmetics showed less than 2.0%. Relative Standard Deviation (% RSD) and the Accuracy (% recovery) of the amount in cosmetics showed 99.3 ~ 103.3, 99.4 ~ 106.7, 97.5 ~ 107.3% respectively. As a result, simultaneous analysis of antimicrobial three 1,2-alkanediols in cosmetics were possible. This method can be utilized in accurate quantitative analysis of 1,2-alkanediols in cosmetics.

Refractive Index and Excess Volume for Diisopropylamine + Isomeric Butanol Mixtures in terms of Nakata and Sakurai model

  • Alkyl amines are widely used in various industries. Nowadays these are also used in CO2 capture technology because amines react with CO2 and remove it from the flue gas. To make the amines more compatible towards this technology, physico chemical properties may be altered by mixing with other solvents. In the present report, we measured the refractive properties of pure diisopropylamine (DIPA) (1) + isomeric butanol (2) at 298.15 K to 308.15 K. The 𝚫n values were positive for DIPA + n-butanol or sec-butanol or isobutanol or tert-butanol mixtures. The measured data was correlated with Redlich-Kister equation. The excess molar volume data were predicted from refractive index data using Nakata and Sakurai model. The experimental data were also predicted by various correlations, and the prediction capability of these correlations was reported through standard deviation. Further, the deviation in refractive index (𝚫n) data was interpreted by the consideration of specific molecular interactions between DIPA and isomeric butanol.

A Study on the Emission Characteristics of LNG-diesel Dual-fuel Engine for Euro 2 Standard (Euro 2 기준 LNG-경유 혼소엔진의 배출가스 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Heavy duty diesel engine has relatively small portion of whole vehicles due to long drive distance and large engine displacement, but largely influences atmosphere environment. City buses changed to CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) bus with Korea-Japan Worldcup. Heavy duty truck and intercity bus, however, were impossible to use CNG because those kinds of vehicles had long drive distance and CNG station was installed mainly at the around of the bus garage of city. Insulation container storing the natural gas as a liquid makes heavy duty truck and intercity bus possible to use the natural gas. Drive using diesel is possible where is hard to recharge the gas. With LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), the dependence on oil is largely decreased, PM (Particulate Matter) and NOx which is chronic disadvantage of diesel is remarkably reduced and finally $CO_2$, the representative green house gas, is reduced over 10%.

Determination of Natural Gas Components by Gas Chromatographic Multicolumn System (기체 크로마토그래피 복합컬럼 시스템에 의한 천연가스 성분의 정량)

  • A multicolumn system consisted of two valve(10-port and 6-port valve)-three column (28% DC 200, SP 1700 and Chromosorb 102 column) was developed. Nine natural gas components composed of $N_2$, $CH_4$, $CO_2$, $C_2H_6$, $C_3H_8$, $i-C_4H_{10}$, $n-C_4H_{10}$, $i-C_5H_{12}$$n-C_5H_{12}$ completed all the baseline separation within 18 minutes. The accuracy and the precision of this system was tested. The retention times and the peak areas were determined with a repeatability between 0.02 and 0.16%, and less than 1%, respectively. Calibration curves for natural-gas components were plotted by the partial pressure injection method of pure gases, and good linear relationships for each component were presented. By using these calibration curves the accuracy of the multicolumn system compaired with that of the single column system for a certified standard gas of natural gas. As a result, relative error in the single and the multicolumn system was less than 0.5% and 0.04%, respectively. The result of application of this system in the analysis of importing LNG composition showed that the heating values calculated by the multicolum system were estimated lower compared with those calculated by the single column system and consequently, the importing price of LNG was able to be cut down.

A Study on the Effect of De-NOx Device on GHG Emissions (De-NOx 저감장치가 온실가스 배출량에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • As increase the number of vehicles, the issue of greenhouse gas that was emitted by them became important. As a result, greenhouse gas (GHG) regulations are being strengthened and efforts are being actively made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the automotive industry. In the other hand, regulations for harmful emission of vehicles have been reinforced by step. Especially, the lastly applied step, so called Euro 6, not only decreased NOx limit down to half of Euro 5 but also introduced real driving emission limit for NOx and PN. It is a challenge for manufacturers to meet the recent GHG regulation as well as the latest emission regulation. To overcome these regulations a De-NOx after-treatment system is being applied to diesel vehicles that are known emitting the lowest GHG among conventional internal combustion engines. At the time of the introduction of Euro 6 emission standard in Korea, in the domestic fuel economy certification test, some diesel vehicles emitted more $CH_4$ than Euro 5 vehicles. As a result, it was confirmed that LNT-equipped vehicles emitted a high level $CH_4$ and the level exceeded the US emission standard. In order to determine the reason, various prior literature was investigated. However, it was difficult to find a detailed study on the methane increase with LNT. In this paper, to determine whether the characteristics of vehicles equipped with LNT the affects the above issue and other greenhouse gases, 6 passenger cars were tested on several emission test modes and ambient temperatures with a environment chamber chassis dynamometer. 2 cars of these were equipped with LNT only, other 2 cars had SCR only, and LNT + SCR were applied to remaining 2 cars. The test result shown that the vehicles equipped with LNT emitted more $CH_4$ than the vehicles with SCR only. Also, $CH_4$ tended to increase as the higher acceleration of the test mode. However, as the test temperature decreases, $CH_4$ tended to decreased. $CO_2$ was not affected by kinds of De-NOx device but characteristic of the test modes.

Conceptual Design of a Portal System for International Shipping's Greenhouse Gas Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV 규제 대응을 위한 국제해운 에너지 효율 포탈 시스템 개념 설계)

  • In this paper, a portal system compatible with MRV regulation was designed to monitoring, reporting and verifying $CO_2$ emission and fuel consumption data from an international ship. A portal system supports monitoring and reporting task of international shipping companies and calculates national greenhouse gas inventory. EU MRV law, MRV discussions of IMO, responses of international shipping companies to ship energy efficiency and greenhouse gas regulation, and greenhouse gas statistics on international shipping were analyzed to drive portal system requirements. For ship energy efficiency and $CO_2$ emitted monitoring, a data collection module was designed based on on-board equipment, energy efficiency measuring device and navigation report. Data transfer module with easy management and minimized usage to transfer ship data to shore was designed. A portal system was designed to convert the collected data into the standard reporting format, perform monitoring, statical analysis, verification and auto report generation, and support national greenhouse gas inventory.

Calibration of δ13C values of CO2 gas with different concentrations in the analysis with Laser Absorption Spectrometry (레이저흡광분석기(Laser Absorption Spectrometry)를 이용한 CO2가스의 탄소안정동위원소비 보정식 산출)

  • Stable carbon isotope ratio of carbon dioxide (${\delta}^{13}C_{CO2}$) is used as an important indicator in the researches for global climate change and carbon capture and sequestration technology. The ${\delta}^{13}C$ value has been usually analyzed with Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS). Recently, the use of Laser Absorption Spectrometry (LAS) is increasing because of the cost efficiency and field applicability. The purpose of this study was to suggest practical procedures to prepare laboratory reference gases for ${\delta}^{13}C_{CO2}$ analysis using LAS. $CO_2$ gas was adjusted to have the concentrations within the analytical range. Then, the concentration of $CO_2$ was assessed in a lab approved by the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme and the ${\delta}^{13}C_{CO2}$ value was measured by IRMS. When the instrument ran over 12 hours, the ${\delta}^{13}C$ values were drifted up to ${\pm}10$‰ if the concentration of $CO_2$ was shifted up to 1.0% of relative standard deviation. Therefore, periodical investigation of analytical suitability and correction should be conducted. Because ${\delta}^{13}C_{CO2}$ showed the dependency on $CO_2$ concentration, we suggested the equation for calibrating the concentration effect. After calibration, ${\delta}^{13}C_{CO2}$ was well matched with the result of IRMS within ${\pm}0.52$‰.

Measurement and Characterization of Atmospheric SF6 at Korea GAW Center in 2007 (기후변화감시센터의 대기 중 2007년 육불화황 측정 결과 및 특성)

  • Korea Global Atmosphere Watch Center (KGAWC), which is located in Anmyeondo and, belongs to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), measures sulfur hexafluoride ($SF_6$) in every hour since 2007. In this study, $SF_6$ observed in 2007 are discussed. A gas chromatograph-electron capture detector (GC-ECD) with pre-cooled device is applied during the observation, and produced data are qualified by means of periodic calibration with $SF_6$ standard gas made by Korea Research Institute of Standard and Science (KRISS). $SF_6$ has been greatly paid attention since Kyoto protocol because of its high global warming potential(GWP) with 22,200 times of $CO_2$ in the period of 100 years. It is a man-made compound and has been usually used for gas insulation since 1970s and for etching process in the information technology-based industry since 1990. Average mixing ratio of $SF_6$ in 2007 was 6.65 pmol/mol at Anmyeondo. According to the GAW report published in 2008, average mixing ratio of $SF_6$ in the atmosphere is continuously growing. At present, the average mixing ratio of $SF_6$ in the atmosphere is known to be approximately 6.25 pmol/mol at global observatory. $SF_6$ value in Anmyeondo shows 0.40 pmol/mol greater than that of the Mauna Loa observatory in 2007.
