  • In the cement industry, various research initiatives are underway to achieve carbon neutrality. Mineral carbonation is a technology that converts carbon dioxide into minerals for storage, and CO2 reactive hardening cement is a type of cement that incorporates mineral carbonation technology. In this study, we aimed to manufacture CO2 reactive hardening cement for reducing carbon emissions in the cement industry by utilizing waste concrete powder generated in the construction sector.

  • The specimen for laser hardening have been carried out using SM45C which is coated with black paint or graphite for better absorption. Segmented mirror was used in order to produce a square beam ($10{\times}10mm$) at the surface with a homegeneous intensity distribution across the beam. $CO_2$-Laser power was changed from 2kW to 4kW and transfer velocity was varied from 0.1m/min to 2.0m/min. The maximum hardness and case depth of SM45C steel are 790Hv and 1.5mm by laser hardening. When the surface of specimens was melted during laser hardening. the surface hardness of SM45C steel was decreased. The surface hardness of 2 layer coated specimen(black paint: $15.4{\mu}m$, graphite coating: $9.5{\mu}m$) was increased than that of 1 layer coated specimen. It is desirable to prepare 2 or more coating layer on the steel surface in order to sufficient case depth and hardness in laser hardening. The graphite coating on the specimen surface was obtained more uniform temperature distribution than black paint coating in laser hardening process.

  • The laser beam hardening has been experimentally tried to find the hardened characteristics of STD11. Experiment was performed on the optimum hardening condition with 2kW $CO_2$ laser. The microstructure of the hardened layers was observed using the microscope. The hardened zones exhibits very high Vickers microhardness of 720 Hv, however, the deoxidation was observed under the surface of hardened area. The case depth of hardened zones is about 0.6mrn and case width is 4mm. FEM-simulation on laser surface hardening of STD11 steel are described. With the proper assumption of the absorbed energy density, the calculated case depth and width in 2 kW $CO_2$ laser hardening were in good agreement with the experimental result. It was found that there is optimum absorbed energy density of STD11.

  • Laser beam hardening of 12%-Cr steel has been evaluated by using a continuous wave 3kW co$_{2}$ laser with a hardening mirror set. Experiment was performed on the hardening condition with a laser power of 2.85kW and travel speed of 1.0 and 1.5m/min. Multi passes have been also tried to find the hardening characteristics of partly overlapped zone. The black paint to use at high temperature was adopted to increase the absorptivity of laser beam energy with the wavelength of 10.6.mu.m at the surface of base metal. The microstructure of the hardened layers was observed by using a light microscopy, SEM and TEM. A fine Lamellar martensite formed in the hardened zones exhibits very high Vickers microhardness of 600Hv, whereas the tempered martensite distributes in the base metal with Vickers microhardness of 240Hv.It has been found that laser hardening with multi passes showed no significant drop of the hardness between adjacent passes.

  • This study has been performed to investigate into some effects of the output power and traverse speed of laser beam on the microstructures, hardness and fatigue resistance of the ductile iron surface-hardened by $CO_2$ laser defocussed beam. Optical micrographs have shown that with increasing the output power and decreasing the traverse speed, the martensite was coarsened and some retained austenite were appeared in ductile iron. The microstructures of hardening zone were composed of bull's eye and some nodular graphite dissolved structures by the effect of self quenching. Fatigue fracture characteristics of ductile iron have appeared in the high stress and low stress ranges. The fracture initiated at nodular graphites in the surface hardened layer due to the stress concentration caused by a notch effect. The interior graphite nodules were broken away or popped out during crack propagation. Fatigue test has shown that values of fatigue strength considerably increased with increasing output power at a given traverse speed.

  • In this study, we proposed a high frequency induction hardening analysis method based on electromagnetic-thermal co-simulation. In the high frequency induction heating analysis, the results of the finite element analysis (FEA) (considering the change of the material property and the cooling factor according to the temperature) and those of the high frequency induction hardening experiment (using the S45C specimen) were compared. The hardness of the S45C specimens was measured using the micro Vickers hardness test to determine the depth of hardening. The measurement results were then compared with the results of FEA. The result of high frequency induction heating analysis showed that the temperature was more than $750^{\circ}C$, which is the A2 transformation point of S45C, while the temperature during quenching was below $200^{\circ}C$. The results showed that the difference of the depth of hardening between the FEA and the experiment is 0.2mm.

  • In the present work, the two back stress kinematic hardening models are proposed by combining Armstrong-Frederick, Phillips and Ziegler's hardening rules. Simple combination of hardening rules using simple rule of mixtures results in various evolutions of the kinematic hardening parameter. Using the combined hardening models the ultimate back stress fur the present models is also derived. The stress rate is co-rotated with respect to the spin of substructure due to the assumption of kinematic hardening rule in finite deformation regime. The work piece under consideration is assumed to consist of the elastic and the rigid plastic deformation zone. Then, the J2 deformation theory is facilitated to characterize the plastic deformation behavior under various loading conditions. The plastic deformation localization behaviors strongly depend on the constitutive description namely back stress evolution and its hardening parameters. Then, the analysis for Swift's effects under the fixed boundaries in axial directions is carried out using simple shear deformation.

  • It was attempted to improve the wear resistance of Al alloy under the load condition by making a formation of the thick surface hardening alloy layers. The thick surface hardening alloy layers were formed on 6061 Al alloys overlayed by MIG welding process with WC-12%Co powder addition. Effects of the dispersion of WE-12%Co powders on hardness and wear characteristics of alloys were investigated. The following results were obtained. Most of WE-12%Co powders are dispersed nearly uniform as unmelted particles in the matrix alloy. A part of WC-12%Co powders are melted in the molten pool, and during solidification {TEX}$Al_{9}Co_{2}${/TEX} appeared. With increasing addition of WC-12%Co powders, the hardness and specific wear resistance of the overlay weld alloys increased and reached Hv450 at WC-12%Co powder addition rate of 54g/min. It is considered that excellent wear resistance of the overlayed alloys was due to dispersed WC-12%Co powders and increased 10 times at WC-12%Co powder addition rate of 54 g/min than that of the WC-free overlaying layers.

  • Surface hardening treatments, such as using the high-frequency induction hardening method, are widely used to increase the fatigue life and prevent the failure of materials by locally increasing the surface hardness. This method, in particular, brings an improvement in static strength by compressive residual surface stress due to the hardening. In this study, the mechanical properties of high-frequency induction hardened SCM440 steel were investigated. These results were also compared with those for base metal and a Q/T (tempering after quenching) treatment specimen. The test results showed that partially high-frequency induction hardened SCM440 steel specimens were more improved in static strength, surface hardness, fatigue limit, and anti-wear than the base metal and Q/T treatment specimens. In particular, the fatigue limit of the high-frequency induction hardened SCM440 steel increased by more than about 52% compared to that of base metal and by about 25% compared to that of the Q/T specimen.

  • In this study, the surface of 40Cr steel was hardened by $CO_2$Laser, and then the microstructural transformations and the hardness distributions of the laser surface hardened layer were observed. The experimental results showed the surface hardening layer was consisted of three parts, which is outmost surface layer of needle martensite, middle layer of martensite and remained pearlite, and transitory boundary layer. In hardness distributions, the surface hardeness of the surface hardening layer had Hv 800~1000, that was 2 to 4 times of matrix's hardness. The hardeness distribution of laser hardening layer that of surface layer hardened by general heat treatment.
