Characteristics of Critical Pressure for a Beam Shape of the Anode Type ion Beam Source

  • We studied the critical pressure characteristics of an anode type ion beam source driven by both charge repulsion and diffusion mechanism. The critical pressure $P_{crit}$ of the diffusion type ion beam source was linearly decreased from 2.5 mTorr to 0.5 mTorr when the gas injection was varied in 3~10 sccm, while the $P_{crit}$ of the charge repulsion ion beam source was remained at 3.5 mTorr. At the gas injection of 10 sccm, the range of having normal beam shape in the charge repulsion ion beam source was about 6.4 times wider than that in the diffusion type ion beam source. An impurity of Fe 2p (KE = 776.68 eV) of 12.88 at. % was observed from the glass surface treated with the abnormal beam of the charge repulsion type ion beam source. The body temperature of the diffusion type ion beam source was observed to increase rapidly at the rate of $1.9^{\circ}C/min$ for 30 minutes and to vary slowly at the rate of $0.1^{\circ}C/min$ for 200 minutes for an abnormal beam and normal beam, respectively.

  • A diesel engine has various merits such as high thermal-efficiency, superior fuel consumption and durability. Therefore the number of diesel engine in the world is increasing. As the seriousness of environmental pollution increases in the world, the method to reduce the noxious materials of $CO_2$, NOx and P.M. is very important subject to correspond to exhaust gas regulations. A new concept, so called premixed charge diesel combustion(PCCI), is focused among the various corresponding manners. In this study, we investigated the mixture formation within the cylinder with injection timing using GTT simulation code and also compared combustion characteristics of PCCI engine with that of commercial diesel engine. From this experiments, it could be found that homogeneous mixture formation was observed according to advance of injection timing and simultaneous reduction of NOx and Soot in injection timing of BTDC 60$^{\circ}$.

  • The Present study attempted to analyze the fate of CO diffused into the circulating blood through the alveoli. Dogs were induced to CO poisoning by rebreathing CO gas mixture contained in Krog's spirometer, by closed circuit method, for 60 minutes. The spirometer was filled initially with 282 ml of CO and 20 liters of air and oxygen, so the composition of gases were arranged as 1.4% in CO and 50% in $O_2$ at the begining of the rebreathing. Oxygen was added corresponding to the utilization of $O_2$ by the animal in proceeding of the experiment. At 60th minutes of CO rebreathing, the concentration of CO in arterial blood and in mixed venous blood were analysed and compared with each other after the CO contents were corrected with the hematocrit measured in the arterial and mixed venous blood. The distribution of CO gas to other tissues was estimated by the analysis of CO diffused into the cystic bile and into the peritoneal gas pocket which was formed by injection of 300 ml air into the peritoneal cavity prior to the CO gas rebreathing. The blood volume was measured by dilution method using $^{51}Chromium$ tagged red cells. CO amount vanished in the animal body was calculated by subtraction of total CO content in blood stream and the CO remained in closed circuit breathing system from the CO amount given to the breathing system at the begining of the experiment. Results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The content of CO corrected by the hematocrit value was slightly less in mixed venous blood than in arterial blood. The amount of CO diffused into the cystic bile and into the peritoneal cavity was averaged to 0.1% and 0.4% of the CO amount in 100 ml of blood, respectively. 2. For 60 minutes of CO rebreathing, CO-hemoglobin saturation reached about 77% at the 60th minutes, CO amount vanished in the experimental animal averaged 36.1 ml/dog/hr., or 21% of the total CO volume in the blood stream. The average vanishing rate of CO during 60 minutes of CO rebreathing per kg of body weight was 2.71 ml/hr. Production of CO measured in ten dogs under hypoxic condition averaged 0.023 ml/kg/hr. The major part of the CO vanished in the dogs seemed to be oxidized to $CO_2$ by various tissues of the animal. The conclusion might be delivered as such oxidation of CO to $CO_2$ by animal tissues can play a role in part of the process of recovery and protection of animal from CO-poisoning.

International developments in geological storage of $CO_2$ ($CO_2$의 지질학적인 저장에 있어서의 국제적인 개발들)

  • Geological storage of captured $CO_2$ is a new way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to protect the climate, but is based on the established technology associated with injection of fluids underground. The geological formations of interest for this technique include operational and depleted oil and gas fields, and deep saline aquifers. Prediction of storage performance will depend on models of the behaviour of $CO_2$ in geological formations; these need to be refined and verified, and methods of monitoring developed and proved. These needs can be met through monitored demonstration and research projects. Current commercial projects that are demonstrating $CO_2$ storage include Sleipner, Weyburn, ORC, and In Salah; research projects include West Pearl Queen, Nagaoka, and Frio. In this paper, some of the monitored injection projects are described. The reservoirs employed for storing $CO_2$, and the associated monitoring techniques, are briefly reviewed. It is argued that small-scale research projects, used to develop techniques and prove models, are complementary to the large-scale monitored injections that will establish the viability of this technique for mitigating climate change.

Experimental Study on Fracture Pressure, Permeability Enhancement and Fracture Propagation using Different Fracture Fluids (다양한 파쇄 유체별 파쇄압력, 투과도 증진 및 균열전파에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The hydraulic fracturing developed to improve permeability of tight reservoir is one of key stimulation technologies for developing unconventional resources such as shale gas and deep geothermal energy. The experimental study was conducted to improve disadvantage of hydraulic fracturing which has simple fracture pattern and poor fracturing efficiency. The fracturing experiments was conducted for tight rock using various fracturing fluids, water, N2, and CO2 and the created fracture pattern and fracturing efficiency was analyzed depending on fracturing fluids. The borehole pressure increased rapidly and then made fractures for hydraulic fracturing with constant injection rate, however, gas fracturing shows slowly increased pressure and less fracture pressure. The 3D tomography technic was used to generate images of induced fracture using hydraulic and gas fracturing. The stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) was estimated increment of 5.71% (water), 12.72% (N2), and 43.82% (CO2) respectively compared to initial pore volume. In addition, permeability measurement was carried out before and after fracturing experiments and the enhanced permeability by gas fracturing showed higher than hydraulic fracturing. The fracture conductivity was measured by increasing confining stress to consider newly creating fracture and closing induced fracture right after fracturing. When the confining stress was increased from 2MPa to 10MPa, the initial permeability was decreased by 89% (N2) and 50% (CO2) respectively. This study shows that the gas fracturing makes more permeability enhancement and less reduction of induced fracture conductivity than hydraulic fracturing.

  • Recently, most of the energy consumed in vehicle is derived from fossil fuels. For this reason, the demand for clean, renewable and affordable alternative energy is forcing the automotive industry to look beyond the conventional fossil fuels. Natural gas represents today a promising alternative to conventional fuels for vehicles propulsion, because it is characterized by a relatively low cost, better geopolitical distribution than oil, lower environmental impact, higher octane number and a higher self ignition temperature. Above all, CNG is an environmentally clean alternative to the existing spark ignition engines with the advantages of minimum change. In this study was installed bi-fuel system that a conventional 2 liters gasoline engine was modified to run on natural gas by a gas injection system. Experiments were mainly carried on the optimization of an ECU control strategy affecting the emission characteristics of CNG/Gasoline bi-fule vehicle. The test results shown that CO2 emission in bi-fuel mode was reduced 16% compared to gasoline fuel in the NEDC mode. Also the amount of CO and HC emissions in bi-fuel and gasoline modes were found to equality. But Compared to gasoline, the bi-fuel mode resulted in higher NOx emissions.

A Study on Syngas Co-Combustion Characteristics in a 0.7 MWth Water-Tube Boiler with Single Heavy Oil Burner (중유 싱글 버너 수관식 보일러에서의 합성가스 혼합연소 특성 연구)

  • This study is aimed to investigate changes of combustion characteristics and heat efficiency when syngas from gasification process using low-rank fuel such as waste and/or biomass is applied partially to an industrial boiler. An experimental study on syngas co-combustion was performed in a 0.7 MW (1 ton steam/hr) water tube boiler using heavy oil as a main fuel. Three kinds of syngas were used as an alternative fuel: mixture gas of pure carbon monoxide and hydrogen, syngas of low calorific value generated from an air-blown gasification process, and syngas of high calorific value produced from an oxygen-blown gasification process. Effects of co-combustion ratio (0~20%) for each syngas on flue gas composition were investigated through syngas injection through the nozzles installed in the side wall of the boiler and measuring $O_2$, $CO_2$, CO and NOx concentrations in the flue gas. When syngas co-combustion was applied, injected syngas was observed to be burned completely and NOx concentration was decreased because nitrogen-containing-heavy oil was partially replaced by the syngas. However, heat efficiency of the boiler was observed to be decreased due to inert compounds in the syngas and the more significant decrease was found when syngas of lower calorific value was used. However, the decrease of the efficiency was under 10% of the heat replacement by syngas.

Development of Pilot Injection Plant for CO2 Underground Storage (이산화탄소 지중저장용 파일럿 주입플랜트 개발)

  • The worldwide issue of greenhouse gas reduction has recently drawn great attention to carbon capture and storage(CCS). In this study, we developed a 10,000 ton/year pilot injection plant for geological storage of carbon dioxide. Major components of the pilot plant include a pressure pump, a booster pump, and an inline heater to bring liquid carbon dioxide into its supercritical state. The test results show that the pilot plant readily achieves the injection pressure and temperature, showing satisfactory control performance. The overall power consumption is 2,000 ~ 2,500 W, more than 75% of which consumed by the pressure pump. This study will facilitate varied research on greenhouse gas reduction as the only domestically developed system for geological injection.

  • The porous metal material is used for injection metal mold with a great deal of gas production because it makes plenty of gas exhausted through pores formed in the metal mold. A canning HIP method was conventionally used for manufacturing of porous metals, but because of difficulty of process control and high cost of production its application was limited. In this experiment, porous metal mold material was produced by an enhanced vacuum sintering method with simply controlled and economical process and porosities/mechanical properties with variation of sintering temperature and duration time during vacuum sintering were studied. As a result, quality goods were obtained at optimized conditions as follows: sintering temperature of $1230^{\circ}C$, duration time of 2 hr and showed superior properties in wear loss and thermal conductivity and the same properties in hardness, TRS (Transverse Rupture Strength), and thermal expansion coefficient in comparison with those under canning HIP.

  • This paper is study on simultaneous reduction of NOx and soot for direct injection diesel engine using high and low cetane fuels. The stratified injection system was applied for diesel engine to use high and low cetane fuel. In this study, diesel fuel was used as high cetane fuels, methanol was used as low cetane fuels. Some parts of the injection system, ie. Nozzle holder. delivery vale, was remodeled to inject dual fuel sequentially from one injector. The leak injection quantity ratio of dual fuel was certificated by volumetric ratio at injection quantity experiment. According as concentration of low cetane fuel was varied, combustion experiment was performed using Toroidal and Complex chamber. Also, exhaust gas and fuel consumption were measured at the same time. Simultaneous reduction of NOx and soot was achieved at complex chamber regardless of concentration of low cetane fuel. However, according as concentration of low cetane fuel was increased, THC and CO was increased.
