  • Basic studies for the effective extraction of ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate(APDC) complexes of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) into a solvent have been performed. The maximum distribution ratio was appeared (log D=1.3543) at pH 2.0 and the partition coefficient was 2.489 in the extraction of $4{\times}10^{-5}M$ APDC itself into chloroform. From the UV/visible spectra of metal-chelates in aqueous and organic solutions, the pH to form stable 1:2 metal-ligand complexes were Co(II):5.0, Ni(II):8.0 and Cu(II):8.0, respectively and only 1 minute was enough to be partitioned into the chloroform. Besides, the partition and extraction equilibria of the complexes were investigated by back-extracting $10.0{\mu}g/ml$ metal-chelates from the solvent into an aqueous solution beacuse of their slight solubilities in the aqueous solution. The distribution coefficients and extractabilities were as follows : at pH 6.5~8.5 of the aqueous solution, log D=2.834 : E(%)=99.9% for $Co(PDC)_2$, at pH 11, log D=5.699 E%=100 for $Ni( PDC)_2$, and at pH 6.0, log D=2.025 : E(%)=99.1% for $Cu(PDC)_2$. And the extraction and formation constants were log $K_{ex}=9.671$ : log ${\beta}_2=6.938$ for $Co(PDC)_2$, log $K_{ex}=9.646$ : log ${\beta}_2=7.071$ for $Ni( PDC)_2$, and log $K_{ex}=9.074$ : log ${\beta}_2=7.049$ for $Cu(PDC)_2$, respectively. From these results, an optimum extraction procedure can be constructed for the separative concentration of trace metallic ions, and the quantitative determination of them in advanced materials and environmental samples will be expected without any influence of sample matrixes.

  • A liquid-liquid solvent extraction process was developed in this study to recover Fe and Ni from heavily concentrated aqueous ferric chloride solution, in an effort to substitute the conventional iron reduction method. Solvent composition and extraction conditions were first developed from the laboratory experiments, and the pilot system was designed and built for commercialization. Stage numbers for extraction and stripping were determined from pilot plant runs, and other operation data were obtained for mass production.

  • An oleaginous fungus was isolated from soil and identified as Mortierella sp. (M-12) for producing arachidonic acid (AA). Cell disruption methods, extraction methods, and particle sizes of freeze-dried biomass were tested to achieve maximum extraction of total lipids and AA. M-12 grown in glucose yeast media at $25^{\circ}C$ for 7 days contained 35.5% total lipid, and 47% of the total lipid was AA. Lipid extraction yield from wet biomass was shown to be similar to that in a dry state. Maximum lipid extraction was achieved using a mixture of chloroform and methanol (2:1) as an extraction solvent. Different mechanical cell disruption methods did not affect lipid extraction yields. The smaller the particle size of the biomass, the better the lipid extraction yield was observed. Particle size of biomass was shown to more strongly affect lipid extraction than extraction time. The highest AA content was observed in the class of neutral lipids.

  • A sulfuric acid leaching of $LiCoO_2$as cathodic active materials of lithium ion secondary batteries was investigated in terms of reaction variables. In the absence of a reducing agent, the extraction of cobalt was less than 40% in 2 M sulfuric acid at $75^{\circ}C$ instead of that of lithium could be almost 100% in the same conditions. To improve the Co extraction, hydrogen peroxide was used as a reducing agent in the range 2~20 vol%. When over 10vo1% hydrogen peroxide was added, the extractions of both metals were improved to about 95%. It seems to be due to the reduction of Co(III) to Co(II) that can be readily dissolved. The extractions of Co and Li were increased with increasing $H_2$$SO_4$concentration and temperature, and amount of hydrogen peroxide and with decreasing of pulp density. The optimum leaching conditions were determined at $2 M H_2$$SO_4$concentration, $75^{\circ}C$ operating temperature, 100 g/L. initial pulp density, 20 vol% $H_2$$O_2$addition and 30 min.

  • In order to improve the market competitiveness of the processed products of Undaria pinnatifida, various extraction conditions of Undaria pinnatifida were examined to determine the optimal conditions for the extraction of its valuable components. The highest level of alginic acid content was detected after 90 min of typical extraction or after 20 min of pressure extraction, after which the levels decreased slightly. The concentrations of reducing sugar and crude protein were also high after 90 min of typical extraction. Both alginic acid and reducing sugar were extracted in greater amounts using pressure extraction. The reducing sugar content was $2.8{\sim}3.2$ times higher using pressure extraction rather than typical extraction. Furthermore, the extraction results were superior with the, pressure extraction method. The appropriate temperature and duration of extraction were found to be $120^{\circ}C$ for 20 min. The use of a single enzyme yielded better results during extraction compared to the use of a mixture of enzymes. 20 min of pressure extraction followed by the addition of 0.1% pectinase and 2 hr of further extraction at $50^{\circ}C$ yielded high contents of alginic acid and reducing sugar from Undaria pinnatifida.

  • This study aimed to investigate the anti-stress function of Aucklandiae Radix (AR) and Cyperi Rhizoma (CR). The essential oils used in the experiment were extracted from AR and CR using Steam Distillation Extraction and Super critical CO2 extraction. To observe the effects of sample administration, we measured feed intake, leukocytes, red blood cells, hemoglobin, platelets, serum serotonin content, immobility time, climbing time, and swimming time in mice subjected to chronic restraint stress as behavioral changes. The average body weight of all experimental groups increased than the average body weight of the control group. The immobility and climbing times of experimental groups A and B administered with supercritical extraction samples were shorter than those of the other experimental groups and the control group, and the swimming time was longer. The serotonin content in the blood of all experimental groups decreased compared to the normal group, and the serotonin content of the control group was increased. The authors suggest that Korean herbal medicines AR and CR may be utilized as anti-stress flavoring agents based on the above results.

  • Effects of co-solvent polarity, citric acid, pressure, temperature, run time, and co-solvent ratio on extraction of major flavonoids from Lonicera Flos were investigated using supercritical fluid $CO_{2}(SF-CO_{2})$. HPLC analysis revealed addition of pure methanol resulted in low extraction yield of major flavonoids, luteoloin (Lu), Quercetin (Qu), Apigenin (Ap). Under same condition, as co-solvent polarity increased, yields of major flavonoids increased gradually, At optimum co-solvent extraction condirion of 60% aqueous methanol (10%, v/v), yields of Lu, Qu, and Ap were 42.09, 28.18, and 3.49 mg/100 g, respectively. Addition of citric acid to 60% aqueous methanol gave higher, with addition of 1% citrie acid resulting in highest yields of 63.2 (Lu), 39.35 (Qu), and 5.79 (Ap) mg/100 g. Optimum extraction conditions of major flavonoids were 200 bar, $50^{\circ}C$, 60 min, and $CO_{2}$-methanol-water(20: 1.8: 1.2).

  • The separation of In from the synthesis solution with Ga, Fe, and Al has been studied by the solvent extraction using D2EHPA as an extractant. The effects as a function of the concentration of extractant and HCl on the extraction of In were investigated. The extraction of In and Ga increased with decreasing HCl concentration, but that of Fe and Al was independent. Separation factor between In and Ga of 115 was obtained at 1.0 M D2EHPA in the presence of 0.5 M HCl of feed solution. Consequently, this study shows that D2EHPA is suitable extractant for In extraction from the synthesis solution. Extraction efficiency and separation factor could be increased by controlling HCl and extractant concentration.
