  • We report the electronic structure of CoFeO-R (R=Hf, La, Nb) thin films studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). These ferrites thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition method and characterized by XAS measurements at O K-, Co and Fe L-edges. The O K-edge spectra suggest that there is a strong hybridization between O 2p and 3d electrons of transition metal cations and Fe $L_{3,2}$-edge spectra indicate that Fe-ions exist in $Fe^{2+}$ with tetrahedral site of the spinel structure. Divalent Co ions is also distributed in tetrahedral site with rare earth ions goes to octahedral sites of spinel structure. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) is also used to explain the symmetry and magnetic nature dependence on rare-earth ions.

  • Interstellar ices (e.g., $H_2O$, $CO_2$, and CO ices) are formed on the surface of dust grains in dense molecular clouds. In a near-infrared spectrum, we can observe deep absorption features particularly due to $H_2O$ ice at $3.05{\mu}m$ and $CO_2$ ice at $4.27{\mu}m$. These interstellar ices have many pieces of information on the interstellar environment. Among various ices, $CO_2$ ice is one of the most important ones as a probe of the interstellar environment. That is because $CO_2$ ice is a secondary product unlike $H_2O$ and CO ices which are primarily formed on dust grains. Past studies for $CO_2$ ice in nearby galaxies were performed only for the galactic center in a few galaxies. In order to utilize the information from $CO_2$ ice effectively, it is valuable to perform mapping observations of ices on a galactic scale. With AKARI, we obtain the spatially-resolved near-infrared ($2.5-5.0{\mu}m$) spectra for the central ~1 kpc region of the nearby starburst galaxy M 82. These spectra clearly show the absorption features due to interstellar $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ ices, and we created their column density maps. As a result, we find that the spatial distribution of $H_2O$ ice is significantly different from that of $CO_2$ ice; $H_2O$ ice is widely distributed, while $CO_2$ ice is concentrated near the galactic center. Our result for the first time reveals spatial variations in $CO_2/H_2O$ ice abundance ratio on a galactic scale, suggesting that the ice-forming interstellar environment changes within a galaxy. In this presentation, we discuss the cause of the variations in the ice abundance ratio.

  • In this study, we tested the absorption of $CO_2$ in combustion gas into an alkaline wastewater to simultaneously control $CO_2$ and wastewater. During the experiment, we investigated the effects of operating parameters on neutralization characteristics of the wastewater by using $CO_2$ in a bench-scale semi-batch jet loop reactor (0.1 m diameter and 1.0 m in height). The operating parameters investigated in the study are gas flow rate of 1.0-2.0 L/min, liquid recirculation flow rate of 4-32 L/min, and liquid temperature of $20-25^{\circ}C$. It was shown that the initial pH of wastewater rapidly decreased with increased gas flow rate for a given liquid recirculation flow rate. This was due to the increase in the gas holdup and the interfacial area at higher gas flow rate in the reactor. At constant gas flow rate, the time required to neutralize the wastewater initial pH of 10.1 decreased with liquid recirculation flow rate ($Q_L$), reached a minimum value in the range of $Q_L$ = 16-24 L/min, and then increased with further increase in $Q_L$. Further, the time required to neutralize the wastewater was shortened at higher temperatures.

  • The study of $CO_2$ absorption in a packed column by 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG) dissolved in ethylene glycol is presented. Absorption column of inner diameter 1 in and 0.6 m length was filled with Protruded-packing $0.16in{\times}0.16in$. We investigated the effect of operating conditions on overall mass transfer coefficients as well as on $CO_2$ removal efficiency. The loading values reached at about $1.0mol_{CO2}/mol_{TMG}$. In case of absorbent with lean $CO_2$ loading, the overall mass transfer coefficient was proportional to the concentration of TMG. However, in the range of more than ${\alpha}=0.5molCO_2/molTMG$, the overall mass transfer coefficients decreased with the concentration of TMG. It is due to the increasing of mass transfer resistance in liquid phase as increasing of viscosity at higher loading values.

  • I present results from the Spitzer/IRS study to identify massive young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Galactic Center (GC). Our sample of 107 YSO candidates was selected based on Spitzer/IRAC colors in the central 300 pc region of the Milky Way Galaxy. We obtained IRS spectra over $5{\mu}m$ to $35{\mu}m$, and identified massive YSOs by the presence of a $15.4{\mu}m$ shoulder on the absorption profile of $15{\mu}m$ $CO_2$ ice, suggestive of high $CH_3OH$ abundance on $CO_2$ ice grains. This $15.4{\mu}m$ shoulder is clearly observed in 16 sources and possibly observed in an additional 19 sources. We further show that 9 massive YSOs reveal molecular gas-phase absorption from $CO_2$, $C_2H_2$, and/or HCN, which traces warm and dense gas in YSOs. Our results provide the first spectroscopic census of the massive YSO population in the GC.

  • This study was conducted to research the formation, color development and application for colored glazes of the spinel solid solutions of the green pigment. On specimens prepared by calcining the oxide and basic carbonate mixture at 1250℃ for 1.5 hour, the x-ray analysis, measurement of reflectance and the test of their stabiality as a glaze pigment were carried out. The results are summarized as follows 1) Each sample is composed of single spinel and not of mixture of spinel. 2) Formation of continuous soild solution, except for a few instances, pertaining to Vegard's law was confirmed by means of the x-ray analysis. 3) The more difference between absorption and reflectance lies, the lighter colors are. When the absorption occurs at the high-reflectance, the excitation purity becomes low. On the contrary when the absorption takes place at the low-reflectance, the excitation purity becomes low. On the contrary when the absorption takes place at the low-reflectance, the excitation purity is higher. 4) Colors obtained in the CdO-MgO-Cr2O3-Al2O3 system, as the amounts of Al3+ increased, change from green through brown to pink, and the absorption peak shifts towards violet region. 5) An increase in Co2+ in the CoO-MgO-Cr2O3-Al2O3 system, changes the color from blue green to dark blue. The excitation purity is higher, and the absorption peak shifts toward regions. 6) Colors are green in the NiO-MgO-Cr2O3 and CdO-MgO-Cr2O3 systems in general, but in the ZnO-MgO-Cr2O3 system brillant hue is not obtained. 70 According to the results of the colored glaze test, the spinels turn outto be stable as brilliant glaze pigment in the calcium-magnesia glaze.

  • $SiO_2$ thin films embedded with Ge microcrystallites (Ge-$SiO_2$) were prepared by use of r.f. co-sputtering technique from a Ge, $SiO_2$ composite target. The size of Ge crystallites can been modulated by the experiment parameters. The optical absorption and non-linear optical properties of Ge-$SiO_2$ films were measured. The blue shift of the optical absorption edge, the saturated absorption and two-photon absorption under the condition of resonant absorption have been observed, and are discussed according to the quantum confinement effect.

  • Quantification of carbon absorption and understanding the human induced land use changes (LUC) forms one of the major study with respect to global climatic changes. An attempt study has been made to quantify the carbon absorption by LUC through remote sensing technology. The Landsat imagery four time periods was classified with the hybrid classification method in order to quantify carbon absorption by LUC. Thereafter, for estimating the amount of carbon absorption, the stand biomass of forest was estimated with the total weight, which was the sum of individual tree weight. Individual tree volumes could be estimated with the crown width extracted from digital forest cover type map. In particular, the carbon conversion index and the ratio of the $CO_2$ molecular weight to the C atomic weight, reported in the IPCC guideline, was used to convert the stand biomass into the amount of carbon absorption. Total carbon absorption has been modeled by taking areal estimates of LUC of four time periods and carbon factors for land use type and standing biomass. Results of this study, through LUC suggests that over a period of construction, 7.10 % of forest and 9.43 % of barren were converted into urban. In the conversion process, there has been a loss of 6.66 t/ha/y (7.94 %) of carbon absorption from the study area.

  • The $TiO_2$ films were prepared in the $H_2SO_4$ solution containing $NH_4F$ at different anodic voltages, to compare the photocatalytic performances of titania for purification of waste water. The microstructure was characterized by a Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Chemical bonding states and co-doped elements of F and N were analyzed using surface X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic activity of the co-doped $TiO_2$ films was analyzed by the degradation of aniline blue solution. From the result of diffuse reflectance absorption spectroscopy(DRS), it is indicated that the absorption edge of the F-N-codoped $TiO_2$ films shifted toward visible light area, and the photocatalytic reaction of $TiO_2$ was improved by doping an appropriate contents of F and N.

  • FINEMET type nanocrystalline materials synthesized by controlled crystallization of amorphous ribbons[1] exhibit excellent soft magnetic properties making them attractive for technological applications. Present work reports the electronic structure studies of Co-substituted FINEMET to get information on the effect of successive Co substitution on local environment around Fe and Co atom by using near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements. NEXAFS spectroscopy and XMCD measurements have been carried out at Fe $L_{3,2}$ and Co $L_{3,2}$-edges to investigate the chemical states and electronic structure of FINEMET [$(Fe_{100-x}Co_x)_{78}Si_9Nb_3Cu_1Ba$](0$L_{3,2}$-edge reveal that Fe is in 2+ state and in tetrahedral symmetry with other elements. The magnetic properties exhibiting soft magnetic behavior[2] are discussed on the basis of the electronic structure studied through XMCD.
