  • PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study is to investigate the changes in the cognitive function of elderly dementia patients residing in a residential care facility, following six weeks of brain-computer interface (BCI)-based cognitive training and to determine whether BCI-based cognitive training effectively improves their cognitive functions. METHODS: Thirty subjects diagnosed with dementia were randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group. Pre- and post-test cognitive function assessments were conducted using the mini mental state examination-Korean (MMSE-K) and Korean-dementia rating scale (K-DRS). The experimental group received BCI-based cognitive training, which consisted of games such as flying a ball and exploding a bomb, while the control group participated in music listening activities and National Health Gymnastics. Both groups engaged in a total of 18 sessions (3 times per week for 6 weeks, for 40 minutes per session). RESULTS: After 6 weeks of intervention, the experimental group had significantly increased MMSE-K scores ($19.53{\pm}1.30$ to $22.20{\pm}1.15$; p<.0011) and total K-DRS scores ($87.20{\pm}4.16$ to $99.33{\pm}1.15$; p<.0011). In addition, the experimental group showed greater cognitive improvements than the control group. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that BCI-based cognitive training is a positive intervention tool for improving the cognitive function of dementia patients.

  • The role of electroencephalography (EEG) in the development of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology is increasing. In particular, the importance of the analysis of event related potential (ERP) in various situations is becoming more significant in BCI technology. Studies on past maze and fire situations have been difficult due to risks and realistic problems. Nowadays, according to the development of virtual reality (VR) technology, realistic maze and fire situation can be realized. In this study, ERPs (P300, and evented related negativity) were analyzed to collect objective data on case determination in an emergency situation. In order to overcome the limitations of previous methods that evaluating the EEG frequency change, ERPs were derived by setting epochs for stimulation and standardizing them, and evaluated for ERPs in this study. P3a and P3b, which are subcomponents of P300, were analyzed and the evented related negativity (ERN) was analyzed together with error positivity (Pe). As a result of the study, statistically significant changes of ERPs were observed, this result, which has little related research, is considered to be meaningful as medical basic statistics.

  • We give an answer to the following question: Question. Let S be a subset of [0,1] containing a maximal element m > 0 and let C :=$\{I_{t}\;{\mid}\;t{\in}S\}$ be a decreasing chain of ideals of a BCK/BCI-algebra X. Then does there exists a fuzzy ideal ${\mu}(X)=S\;and\;C_{\mu}=C?$.

  • The global financial crisis, triggered by the subprime mortgage crisis in 2007, has put the world economy into the recession with financial market turmoil. I tested whether variables were cointegrated or whether there was an equilibrium relationship. Also, Generalized impulse-response function (GIRF) and accumulation impulse-response function (AIRF) may be used to understand and characterize the time series dynamics inherent in economical systems comprised of variables that may be highly interdependent. Moreover, the IRFs enables us to simulate the response in freight to a shock in the USD/JPY exchange rate, Dow Jones industrial average index, Dow Jones volatility, Chinese Import volatility. The result on the cointegration test show that the hypothesis of no cointergrating vector could be rejected at the 5 percent level. Also, the empirical analysis of cointegrating vector reveals that the increases of USD/JPY exchange rate have negative relations with freight. The result on the impulse-response analysis indicate that freight respond negatively to volatility, and then decay very quickly. Consequently, the results highlight the potential usefulness of the multivariate time series techniques accounting to behavior of Freight.

  • Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) are natural response signal associated with the visual stimuli with specific frequency. By using SSVEP, occipital lobe region is electrically activated as frequency form equivalent to stimuli frequency with bandwidth from 3.5Hz to 75Hz. In this paper, we propose an experimental paradigm for analyzing EEGs based on the properties of SSVEP. At first, an experiment is performed to extract frequency feature of EEGs that is measured from the image-based visual stimuli associated with specific objective with affordance and object-related affordance is measured by using mirror neuron system based on the frequency feature. And then, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) method is applied to perform the online classification of the objective pattern associated with the EEG-based affordance data. By using the SSVEP measurement experiment, we propose a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system for recognizing user's inherent intentions. The existing SSVEP application system, such as speller, is able to classify the EEG pattern based on grid image patterns and their variations. However, our proposed SSVEP-based BCI system performs object pattern classification based on the matters with a variety of shapes in input images and has higher generality than existing system.

  • This study has been made to research on the brain wave characteristics of baduk expert by BCI(Brain Computer Interface). The test was based on the researches from 1th September, 2005 to 30th December, 2005, compared with the ones of the standardized general public. The number of the general public are 695 (elementary school students 423, middle and high school students 161, adults 111) and the number of the baduk players are 57 (researchstudents 15, Korean baduk club students 16, professional baduk players 26). The research data show that the baduk players have the higher indexes than the general public in Self Regulation quotient p=.002, Attention Quotient(left) p=.002, Emotion Quotient p=.027, Stress Quotient(left) p=.002 and Brain Quotient p=.006. There are some differences in brain functions between baduk players and the ordinary people. Difference in functions of the brain among baduk experts is also analyzed. That result shows that there is no different brain function between professional baduk player.

  • Brain computer interface(BCI) technology has been continuously developed due to the continuous development of interface technology and the promotion of brain wave research. In this paper, we propose a driving habit management system by adopting BCI to transportation. The proposed system consists of the electroencephalogram(EEG) measuring unit, the EEG analysis unit, the memory section for storing the state information of drivers, the speed controller unit and the alarming section for generating warnings. Our proposed system can reduce the drowsy driving, improve the driving habits of users and help to prevent traffic accidents.
