  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of arc current and contact velocity on the erosion of silver contact to be used in low voltage circuit breakers. The arc current range from $2kA_{rms}$ to $20kA_{rms}$. A test system allows the control of the opening velocity profiles with contact velocities up to 10m/s and also enables the synchronization of the contact opening with a point on the arc current waveform. Contact erosion is evaluated by measuring the mass change of the cathode and anode. The results show that increase the opening velocity from 2m/s to 6m/s leads to an decrease in the contact erosion. The material transfer from one electrode to another is shown to depend on the transfer charge and the opening velocity of the contacts.

  • Effects of citrate-capped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the blood coagulation and platelet aggregation were investigated using whole blood, platelet rich plasma (PRP) and washed platelet obtained from SD male rats. To confirm the stability of AgNPs in the test, size distribution of the nanoparticles was measured in the vehicles including distilled water, serum, and platelet buffers. The average size of AgNPs was 20 nm in the vehicles, which means that the stability was maintained during the whole experimental period. When blood coagulation was monitored by using whole blood impedance aggregometer, coagulation was not observed at the concentration of 1, 10 and 50 ppm. Platelets in plasma or in buffer were not aggregated by AgNPs at the concentration of 1, 2 and 4 ppm, respectively. The test concentration of AgNPs could not be increased because the dark color of the nanoparticles impeded the transmission of light, which is an indicator of aggregation. Although the blood or platelets were pre-activated by collagen, thrombin, or ADP with sub-threshold level, aggregation was not observed at the test concentration. Microscopic observation also supported the result obtained by the aggregometer.

  • This paper describes the effects of kinetic parameters such as attaching speed, attaching time, and dettaching speed on printing property of electrodes which were fabricated by micro-contact printing with Ag ink. In inking process the attaching speed was preferable to be less than 1 mm/s, attaching time as short as possible, and detaching speed larger than 1000 mm/s in order to obtain the transfer ratio of ink larger than 98%. Meanwhile in printing process the parameters were totally opposite to the results of inking process; attaching speed larger than 100 mm/s, attaching time larger than 30 sec, and detaching speed less than 1 mm/s for the best results. With the parameters we could obtain the micro-contact printed electrodes with the minimum line width of $30\;{\mu}m$, thickness of 300~500 nm, roughness less than 50 nm, and resistivity of about $15{\sim}16{\mu\Omega\cdot}cm$.

  • A PVC membrane electrode for silver ion based on a new cone shaped calix[4]arene (CASCA) as membrane carrier was prepared. The electrode exhibits a Nernstian response for $Ag^+$ over a wide concentration range ($1.0{\times}10^{-1}-8.0{\times}10^{-6}$M) with a slope of 58.2 {\pm}$ 0.5 mV per decade. The limit of detection of the sensor is $5.0{\times}10^{-6}$M. The sensor has a very fast response time (~5 s) in the concentration range of ${\leq}=1.0{\times}10^{-3}$ M, and a useful working pH range of 4.0-9.5. The proposed sensor displays excellent discriminating ability toward $Ag^+$ ion with respect to common alkali, alkaline earth, transition and heavy metal ions. It was used as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of $Ag^+$ with EDTA and in direct determination of silver ion in wastewater of silver electroplating.

  • In this experiment, Pd-Ag-Cu membrane was manufactured using electroless plating on an α-Al2O3 support. Pd, Ag and Cu were each coated on the surface of the support through electroless plating and heat treatment was performed for 18 h at 500℃ in H2 in the middle of electroless plating to form Pd alloy. The surface of the Pd-Ag-Cu membrane was observed through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and the thickness of the Pd membrane was measured to be 7.82 ㎛ and the thickness of the Pd-Ag-Cu membrane was measured to be 3.54 ㎛. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the formation of a Pd-Ag-Cu alloy with a composition of Pd-78wt%, Ag-8.81wt% and Cu-13.19wt%. The gas permeation experiment was conducted under the conditions of 350~450℃ and 1~4 bar in H2 single gas and H2/N2 mixed gas. The maximum H2 flux of the hydrogen separation membrane measured in H2 single gas is 74.16 ml/cm2·min at 450℃ and 4 bar for the Pd membrane and 113.64 ml/cm2·min at 450℃ and 4 bar for the Pd-Ag-Cu membrane. In the case of the separation factor measured in H2/N2 mixed gas, separation factors of 2437 and 11032 were measured at 450℃ and 4 bar.

  • Ethanol was used as reductant to remove $NO_x$ over Ag/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst via SCR from stationary emission source. Among the tested hydrocarbon reductants, ethanol showed highest de-$NO_x$ performance over the Ag/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst. De-$NO_x$ efficiency of about 83% was obtained in the condition of GHSV 20,000 $hr^{-1}$, $NO_x$ 200 ppm, CO 200 ppm, $O_2$ 13%, $H_2O$ 5% and mole ratio of ethanol/$NO_x$ = 2 between temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$. While $SO_2$ presence in the $NO_x$ exhaust suppressed the catalytic activity, catalyst with acid (0.7% $H_2SO_4$) treatment of catalyst showed higher catalytic activity, where In-Situ DRIFT showed S presence over catalyst surface was increased after acid treatment of catalyst. From in-situ DRIFT and SCR results, it was concluded that sulfur presence over the surface of Ag/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was the dominant factor to control the de-$NO_x$ reaction yield via HC-SCR from the exhausted gas including $SO_2$.

  • We investigate the transparent TFTs using a transparent ZnSnO3 (ZTO)/Ag/ZTO multilayer electrode as S/D electrodes with low resistivity of $3.24{\times}10^{-5}$ ohm-cm, and high transparency of 86.29% in ZTO based TFTs. The Transparent TFTs (TTFTs) are prepared on glass substrate coated 100 nm of ITO thin film. On atomic layer deposited $Al_2\;O_3$, 50 nm ZTO layer is deposited by RF magnetron sputtering through a shadow mask for channel layer using ZTO target with 1 : 1 molar ratio of ZnO : $SnO_2$. The power of 100W, the working pressure of 2mTorr, and the gas flow of Ar 20 sccm during the ZTO deposition. After channel layer deposition, a ZTO (35 nm)/Ag (12 nm)/ZTO(35 nm) multilayer is deposited by DC/RF magnetron sputtering to form transparent S/D electrodes which are patterned through the shadow mask. Devices are annealed in air at 300$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min following ZTO deposition. Using UV/Visible spectrometer, the optical transmittances of the TTFT using ZTO/Ag/ ZTO multilayer electrodes are compared with TFT using Mo electrode. The structural properties of ZTO based TTFT with ZTO/Ag/ZTO multilayer electrodes are analyzed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The transfer and output characterization of ZTO TTFTs are examined by a customized probe station with HP4145B system in are.

  • A simple and cost effective method for separation and preconcentration of Ag(I) at the $10^{-7}\;mol\;L^{-1}$ level in the environmental and mineral samples is present. The method is based on the flotation of Ag(I)-iodide complex as an ion-associate with ferroin in pH of 4 from a large volume of an aqueous solution (500 mL) using nheptane. The floated layer was then dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) for the subsequent spectrophotometric determination. Beer's law was obeyed over a range of 2.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-7}$-4.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-6}$ mol $L^{-1}$ with the apparent molar absorptivity of 2.67 ${\times}$ $10^5$ L $mol^{-1}\;cm^{-1}$. The detection limit (n = 5) was 4 ${\times}$ $10^{-8}$ mol $L^{-1}$, and RSD (n = 5) obtained for 2.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-6}$ mol $L^{-1}$ of Ag(I) was 2.2%. The interference effects of a number of elements was studied and found that only $Hg^{2+}$ at low concentration, and $Pb^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, and $Fe^{3+}$ ions at moderately high concentrations were interfered. To overcome on these interference effects, the solution was treated with EDTA at a buffering pH of 4 and passed through a column containing Amberlite IR-120 ionexchanger resin, just before the flotation process. The proposed method was applied to determine of Ag(I) in a synthetic waste water, a photographic washing sample and a geological sample and the results was compared with those obtained from the flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The results were satisfactorily comparable with together, so that the applicability of the proposed method was confirmed in encountering with the real samples.

  • We have studied the properties of Ag/undoped ZnO (ZnO) multilayer thin films deposited on glass substrate by the facing targets sputtering method. In an attempt to find out the optimum conditions of the Ag thin film, which would be coated on the ZnO thin film, we investigated the changes of sheet resistance, transmittance and surface morphology as a function of deposition times and the substrate temperature. The electrical and optical characteristics of Ag/ZnO multilayers were evaluated by a four-point probe, a UV/VIS spectrometer with a spectral range of 390-770 nm, a X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), an atomic force microscope (AFM) and a Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), respectively. We were able to prepare the Ag/ZnO multilayer thin film with sheet resistance of 9.25 $\Omega/sq.$ and transmittance of over 80% at 550nm.

  • Distribution of electric fields of surface plasmons at resonance and off-resonance angles were calculated and compared. As applications of surface plasmon resonance, (1) optical constants of ZnS films overcoated on Ag films were measured as the thickness of ZnS films increased, (2) four surface plasmon resonances distributed spatially due to the different thickness of SiO thin films overcoated on Ag films were observed in a picture frame by employing diverging waves of incidence, and (3) patterns of SiO thin films such as a grating and a character "가" overcoated on Ag films were measured by employing collimated waves of incidence.
