$Si_3N_4$ is a ceramic material attracting attention in many fields because of its excellent abrasion resistance. In addition, Ti and TiAl alloys are metals used in a variety of high temperature environments, and have attracted much attention because of their high strength and high melting points. Therefore, study of the interface reaction between $Si_3N_4/Ti$ and $Si_3N_4/TiAl$ can be a useful practice to identify phase selection and diffusion control. In this study, $Si_3N_4/Ti_5Si_3+TiN/TiN/Ti$ diffusing pairs were formed in the $Si_3N_4/Ti$ interfacial reaction and $Si_3N_4/TiN(Al)/Ti_3Al/TiAl$ diffusion pathway was identified in the $Si_3N_4/TiAl$ interfacial reaction. The diffusion layers of the interface reactions were identified and, to investigate the kinetics of the diffusion layer, the integrated diffusion coefficients were estimated.

The TiAlCrSiN film was deposited on the WC-20%TiC-10%Co carbide, and its oxidation behavior was examined at $700-1000^{\circ}C$. It displayed relatively good oxidation resistance owing to the formation of $TiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, $Cr_2O_3$, and $SiO_2$ up to $900^{\circ}C$. However, at $1000^{\circ}C$, the fast oxidation rate and partial oxidation of WC in the substrate led to the formation of the thick, fragile oxide scale.

To understand the effect of Fe on the oxidation behavior of TiAl alloys, TiAl-(2, 4, 6at% )Fe were oxidized at 800 and 90$0^{\circ}C$ in air. The oxidation resistance of TiAl-Fe alloys increased with increasing an iron content. The scales formed consisted of an outer $TiO_2$ layer, an intermediate $A1_2$$O_3$ layer, and an inner mixed ($TiO_2$+$A1_2$$O_3$) layer, being similar to other common TiAl alloys. But, the scales formed on TiAl-Fe alloys were generally thin compared to those formed on pure TiAl, and contained dissolved iron. Below the oxide scale, an oxygen affected zone was formed. This beneficial effects of Fe on increasing the oxidation resistance and scale adherence of TiAl alloys were attributed to the refinement of oxide grains, increased scale adherence and the enhanced alumina-forming tendency.
The effects of dopant Al2O3 and surface roughness on the photoelectrochemical conversion of TiO2 ceramic electrodes were investigated. The photocurrent increased with increasing the amount of dopant Al2O3 up to 0.1wt% and 0.05wt% in the specimens reduced at 700$^{\circ}C$ and 800$^{\circ}C$, respectively, and then decreased. However, the photoresponse appeared around 415 nm, which very closely corresponds to the energy band gap of TiO2(∼3.0eV), regardless of reduction temperature and the amount of Al2O3. And the photocurrent increased with increasing surface roughness in the undoped TiO2 ceramic electrode.
A composite of TiB2-Al2O3 system was successfully prepared from a mixture of TiO2, B2O3, and Al by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) with a novel characteristic, utilizing the internal oxidation heat of aluminium metal of the mixture, instead of by a conventional technique, externally heating a mixture of Ti, B and Al2O3. From a mixture with B/Ti molar ratio of =2.0, pure two phases of TiB2 and $\alpha$-Al2O3 with good crystallinity and small, uniform sizes were formed. However, when the B/Ti molar ratio of the mixture goes to a value less than 2.0, in addition to the above main minerals, a small smounts of metastable phases such as TiB and Ti3B4 were formed. It was found that about 60%, the optimum green density of compacts gave their highest reaction rate and temperature during SHS process. TiB2-Al2O3 system composite with B/Ti molar ratio of =2.0 could be pressurelessly sintered even at 190$0^{\circ}C$ under Ar gas flows without any addition of sintering aids, showing their good properties such as 91.2% in relative density, 2750 kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ in Vickers hardness and 2620 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in flexural strength.
The alumina-titania composite powders coated with Al2O3 were prepared by the method of hydrolysis-deposition of mixed aluminium salt solution of Al2(SO)4-Al(NO3)3-Urea. The effects of coating-process parameters on the characteristics of coated composite powders were also investigated. As the content of TiO2 dispersed in deionized water increased, the coated composite powders were found to be more uniform in size and unagglomerated. When TiO2 powders were coated for 30 min, the optimum TiO2 content in the coating process was 400 mg/ι. The size of TiO2 particle was increased approximately from 0.7${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 1.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ through coating of Al2O3. The IEP of coated composite powders was pH=8.3 identical to the value of aluminium hydroxides and the zeta-potential showed nearly similar values each other. When heat treating coated composite powders at 130$0^{\circ}C$, only two phases of TiO2(rutile) and Al2TiO5 were observed. These results showed that the suface of TiO2 could be uniformly coated with the aluminium hydroxide.

A powder metallurgy-based rapid consolidation technique, Plasma Pressure Compaction ($P^2C^{(R)}$), was utilized to produce near-net shape parts of gamma titanium aluminides (${\gamma}$-TiAl). Micron-sized ${\gamma}$-TiAl powders, composed of Ti-50%Al and Ti-48%Al-2%Cr-2%Nb (at%), were rapidly consolidated to form near-net shape ${\gamma}$-TiAl parts in the form of 1.0" (25.4 mm) diameter discs, as well as $3"{\times}2.25"$ ($76.2mm{\times}57.2mm$) tiles, having a thickness of 0.25" (6.35 mm). The ${\gamma}$-TiAl parts were consolidated to near theoretical density. The microstructural morphology of the consolidated parts was found to vary with consolidation conditions. Mechanical properties exhibited a strong dependence on microstructural morphology and grain size. Because of the rapid consolidation process used here, grain growth during consolidation was minimal, which in turn led to enhanced mechanical properties. Consolidated ${\gamma}$-TiAl samples corresponding to Ti-48%Al-2%Cr-2%Nb composition with a duplex microstructure (with an average grain size of $5{\mu}m$) exhibited superior mechanical properties. Flexural strength, ductility, elastic modulus and fracture toughness for these samples were as high as 1238 MPa, 2.3%, 154.58 GPa and 17.95 MPa $m^{1/2}$, respectively. The high temperature mechanical properties of the consolidated ${\gamma}$-TiAl samples were characterized in air and vacuum and were found to retain flexural strength and elastic modulus for temperatures up to $700^{\circ}C$. At high temperatures, the flexural strength of ${\gamma}$-TiAl samples with Ti-50%Al composition deteriorated in air by 10% as compared to that in vacuum. ${\gamma}$-TiAl samples with Ti-48%Al-2%Nb-2%Cr composition exhibited better if not equal flexural strength in air than in vacuum at high temperatures.
The TiC-Ni/Al reaction-bonding composites were prepared by the infiltration of Ni/Al melt into the TiC preforms. The microstructure the reaction composition crystalline phase and the mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. During the reaction-bonding Ni/Al mixture had a good wettability and per-meability with TiC preform and pore-free and fully dense sintered bodies were produced. In the case of the Ni/Al atomic ratio of 0.3 and 0.5 TiC raw particle shape was changed to irregular particles because of the decomposition in the liquid matrix and its phenomena was more distinguished in the Al-rich liquid matrix. With increasing more than 1 of the Ni/Al atomic ratio the sample of TiC grain shape was changed from spherical to palatelet particles. Also with increasing the atomic ratio of Ni/Al bending strength and fracture spherical to palatelet particles. Also with increasing the atomic ratio of Ni/Al bending strength and fracture toughness were increased and its maximum value was 1073 MPa and 11 MPa.m1/2 respectively.
Fer the purpose of improving ductility of $Al_3$Ti intermetallic compound has potential to industrial application, we investigated formation behavior of cubic Ll$_2$ structure and effect of Mn addition. Nanocrystalline cubic Ll$_2$Al$_3$Ti intermetallic compound, has 10nm size of grain, was fabricated by mechanical alloying for 20hr at the composition of Al-8Mn-25Ti. Ternary cubic Ll$_2$Al$_3$Ti, added Mn, did not showed phase transformation from Ll$_2$ to D0$_{23}$ or D0$_{22}$ unlike binary cubic Ll$_2$Al$_3$Ti and maintained Ll$_2$ structure.
In order to investigate the effect of second phase on $Al_2O_3$ matrix, SiC particles were dispersed in $Al_2O_3$ matrix as a second phase over the content range of 5 vol.% to 20 vol.%. To this mixture, $Y_2O_3$ or $TiO_2$ powders were added as a sintering additive before isostatically pressing and pressurelessly sintering at 180$0^{\circ}C$ for 90 min in $N_2$ atmosphere. With increasing SiC content, relative densities of composites were decreased but mechanical properties of composites were improvjed. In the case of adding $Y_2O_3$ as a sintering additive, maximum values of flexural strength, hardness and fracture toughness were 525 MPa, 17.1 GPa, 4.1 MPa.m1/2 respectively. In the case of adding X$TiO_2$ as a sintering additive, maximum values of flexural strength, hardness were 285 MPa, 12.1 GPa respectively. Improved mechanical properties were found to be the results of grain growth control of $Al_2O_3$ matrix and crack deflection by the second phase SiC particles.
