  • Alloys of Fe-(5.3-29.8)%Mn-(1.1-1.9)%Al-(0.4-0.5)%C were oxidized at 550 ℃ to 650 ℃ for 20 h to understand effects of alloying elements on oxidation. Their oxidation resistance increased with increasing Mn level to a small extent. Their oxidation kinetics changed from parabolic to linear when Mn content was decreased and temperature was increasing. Oxide scales primarily consisted of Fe2O3, Mn2O3, and MnFe2O4 without any protective Al-bearing oxides. During oxidation, Fe, Mn, and a lesser amount of Al diffused outward, while oxygen diffused inward to form internal oxides. Both oxide scales and internal oxides consisted of Fe, Mn, and a small amount of Al. The oxidation of Mn and carbon transformed γ-matrix to α-matrix in the subscale. The oxidation led to the formation of relatively thick oxide scales due to inherently inferior oxidation resistance of alloys and the formation of voids and cracks due to evaporation of manganese, decarburization, and outward diffusion of cations across oxides.

  • With increase in operating temperature of gas turbine for higher efficiency, it is necessary to find new materials of TBC for replacement of YSZ. Among candidate materials for future TBCs, zirconate-based oxides with pyrochlore and fluorite are prevailing ones. In this study, phase structure and thermal conductivities of $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ oxide system are investigated. $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ system are comprised by selecting $La^{3+}/Gd^{3+}$ as A-site ions and $Zr^{4+}$ as B-site ion in $A_2B_2O_7$ pyrochlore structures. With powder mixture from each oxide, $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ oxides are fabricated via solid-state reaction at $1600^{\circ}C$. Either pyrochlore or fluorite or mixture of both appears after heat treatment. For the developed phases along $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ compositions, thermal conductivities are examined, with which the potential of $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ compositions for TBC application is also discussed.

  • The time-lag-effect of alkali salts on the gelation of sodium alginate-$CaSO_4{\cdot}$1/2 $H_2O$ is compared with Miyake's data, and then the formation rate of the elastics measured by the continuous method (an improved Schwedoff's method) and the change of rigidity with metallic oxides are studied as follows: (1) The gelation processes of sodium alginate and $CaSO_4{\cdot}$1/2 $H_2O$-aqueous sol are studied by measuring, continuously the increases of tensions ofsamples. (2) The time-lag-effect of $Na_3PO_4$ on the formation rate of the elastic gel is larger than that of $Na_2CO_3$, but the difference between the effects of the two alkali salts on the rate is found not so greater than predicted in Miyake's data. (3) Any regularities of the effect on the rate by metallic oxides are not observed. The increasing effects of the rates of $SiO_2$ and MgO are relatively large, and that of ZnO is relatively small. However, $Al_2O_3$, $Sb_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$show some decreasing effects. As a result it is noted that the regularities do not depend on the effect of oxide species and their amounts. (4) It is not found proportionality between the rigidity and the gelation rate. However, the increasing effect of the rigidity with the addition of metallic oxides can be observed. The rigidity increasing rate of MgO is the largest of them.

  • The cell permeability and cytotoxic effects of different-sized zinc oxide (ZnO) particles were investigated using a human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line called Caco-2. Morphological observation by scanning electron microscopy revealed that three zinc oxides with different mean particle sizes (ZnO-1, 20 nm; ZnO-2, 90~200 nm; ZnO-3, $1\sim5\;{\mu}m$) tended to aggregate, particularly in the case of ZnO-1. When cytotoxicities of all three sizes of zinc oxide particles were measured at concentration ranges of $1\sim1000\;{\mu}g$/mL, significant decreases in cell viability were observed at concentrations of $50\;{\mu}g$/mL and higher. Among the three zinc oxides, ZnO-1 showed the lowest viability at $50\;{\mu}g$/mL in Caco-2 cells, followed by ZnO-2 and ZnO-3. The permeate concentration of ZnO-1 from the apical to the basolateral side in the Caco-2 model system after four hours was about three-fold higher than that of either ZnO-2 or ZnO-3. These results demonstrated that ZnO-1, with a 20 nm mean particle size, had poorer viability and better permeability in Caco-2 cells than ZnO-2 and ZnO-3.

  • [ $MO/Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ ](M=Ni and Cu) mixed metal oxides were prepared using sol-gel method in order to investigate the applicability to the 2-step thermo-chemical water splitting process and their redox behaviors were studied by temperature programmed reaction(TPR) from room temperature to 900$^{\circ}C$ under 5% $H_2$/Ar for the reduction and $H_2O$/Ar for the oxidation, respectively. From the results, peaks of the reduction and the oxidation on temperature were shifted with the change of crystalline phases due to the addition of $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$. The intensities of the peaks were also increased with the increase of contents of NiO or CuO that could be considered as active species. In addition, based on the observation of SEM images before and after the redox test, it seemed that $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ added prevented high temperature sintering of active metal components such as Ni (or Cu) on the surface and played a role of dispersing the active species homogeneously in solid solution of mixed oxides.

  • Periodically ordered mesoporous manganese oxides were synthesized in a single and double replication procedure. Mesoporous SBA-15 and -16 silica and their reverse replica carbons were successively used as hard templates. The silica and carbon pore systems were infiltrated with $Mn(NO_3)_2{\cdot}xH_2O$ or $Mn(AcAc)_2$, which was then converted to $Mn_2O_3$ at 873 K; the silica and carbon matrix were finally removed by NaOH solution or calcinations in air. The structure of the mesoporous $Mn_2O_3$, using a carbon template, corresponds to that of the original SBA-15 and SBA-16 silica. The products consist of hexagonally arranged cylindrical mesopores with crystalline pore walls or cubic mesoporous pores. The structure of replica has been confirmed by XRD, TEM analysis, and its electrochemical properties were tested with cyclic voltammetry. Formation of $Mn_2O_3$ inside the mesoporous carbon pore system showed much improved electrical properties.

  • This experiment Was carried out under two points of view, from May 1st to the end of 1973. One was the comparative determination of the activation factor of Lead dioxide by kinds in measuring of Sulfur oxides concentration by $PbO_2$ cylinder method, and the other was the comparison that result with the record of auto analyzer. Five measuring sites were selected out of Seoul City. Three kinds of Lead dioxide made in Japan (B,C and D) were compared with Standard $PbO_2$ (A for use in Determination of Sulphur in the atmosphere, purity 99% up) made in British Institution, and monthly measuring was conducted at every sampling site. The recording by auto analyzer (Beckman Model 906-A $SO_2$ Analyzer) was conducted once or twice a month for 24 hours at each sampling site during the same period. And some significant results were obtained. 1. In comparative experiments to determine the activation degree of three kinds of Lead dioxide (B,C and D), the obtained correction factor of B reagent was 1.09, 1.16 in C and 1.30 in D against Standard $PbO_2$ (A). Therefore, it should be in need of standardization or clear statement about the reagents for use, in determination sulfur oxides by $PbO_2$ cylinder method. 2. Generally, the concentration of Sulfur dioxide by wilkins' convertion method from $SO_3$ showed about 20-30% higher than those by Auto analyzer.

  • Mechanical properties of Y2O3-containing tetragonal ZrO2 polycrystals(Y-TZP) were investigated. Several additives were used to modify the hardness and fracture toughness of Y-TZP. The effects of these individual additives were discussed and their interactions were also analysed. Each additive, such as CoO, Fe2O3, MnO2 was found to deteriorate the mechanical properties of Y-TZP when it was used singly. But the fracture toughness of Y-TZP was significantly improved when these additives and Al2O3 were added in combination at a certain ratio. The addition of CoO, Fe2O3 and MnO2 into Y-TZP resulted in the more complex behavior of fracture toughness and hardness. The specimen with 1.5 wt%-Fe2O3, 3.0 wt% -Al2O3 and 1.5 wt%-CoO showed the monoclinic to tetragonal phase ratio of 18% and the highest toughness of $10.8MPa{\cdot}m1/2$ with Vickers hardness of 1201 kgf/mm2. However, the toughness decreased as the ratio increased and macrocracks developed beyond the ratio of 25%. Sample No. 16 is improved high Physical and Mechanical Properties.
