  • Two separate trials were designed to determine effects of dietary level of whole flaxseed (WFS) on fatty acid composition of serum, and subcutaneous, perirenal, intermuscular, and intramuscular adipose tissues of Korean Hanwoo cattle. Twentyone bulls (trial 1) and 15 cows (trial 2) were assigned to diets containing 0, 10 or 15% WFS. Relative treatment effects were similar between bulls and cows. The proportion of C18:3 in serum and to a lesser extent in adipose tissues were increased by dietary inclusion of WFS, reflecting supplemented lipid composition of WFS that escaped ruminal biohydrogenation. Animals fed WFS had a lower proportion of saturated fatty acids in serum and adipose tissues than animals fed diets without WFS, while the opposite trend was observed in unsaturated fatty acids with little differences between two WFS groups. WFS-fed animals had higher proportions of C18:1, 18:2, 18:3, 20:3, and 22:3 and lower proportions of C12:0, 14:0, 16:0 and 18:0 in intramuscular fat than animals fed diets without WFS. Furthermore, feeding WFS increased proportions of both $\omega$-3 and $\omega$-6 fatty acids but decreased the ratio of $\omega$-6/$\omega$-3 substantially. In conclusion, feeding WFS can be an effective method of increasing absorption of unsaturated fatty acids, and subsequent deposition in adipose tissues.

  • The seismic over-strength factor Ω is evaluated for 4-story reinforced concrete buildings in Korea, which has low seismic intensity. For this study, the seismic load suggested in' Aseismic guideline research- phase ll' (in Korea) is used. When 3D study-models are designed, span length and bay number are varied and accidental torsional moment is considered. And the models are analyzed by push-over analysis, in which external and internal frame are connected by rigid-link. As a result of numerical experiments, Ω is increased as the bay number or span length is increased. Because, by the including of accidental torsional moment in designing process, the increased ratio of strength of external columns is larger than the increased ratio of span length or bay number. And this makes the failure mode of model closer or strong-column and weak-beam mechanism.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the pattern of individual fatty acid intake and to compare total serum lipid levels and total serum fatty acid composition of elementary school children in Seoul by fish and meat intakes. The subjects were divided into High-Fish / Low-Meat(HFLM, n=49) and Low-Fish/High-Meat(LFHM, n=47) group. The total energy from fat of HFLM and LFHM group was 22.0 and 30.0% respectively. The average intake of cholesterol was 237-287mg in HFLM group and 358-387mg in LFHM group. The average P/M/S ratio for all subjects was 1.1-1.4/1.1 - 1.2/1.0, which was very similar to desired ratio. The $\omega$6/$\omega$3 ratio of dietary fatty acids of HFLM and LFHM group were 8.0-10.9 and 18.9-29.3 respectively, which in case of LFHM group, was fat beyond the suggested range, 4/1 - 10.1. Serum lipid levels of all subjects fell within the normal range and there was no significant difference in serum lipid levels between HFLM and LFHM groups, except for HDL-cholesterol in upper grades(4th-6th grades). In lower grades(1st-3rd grades), serum PUFA composition of HFLM (40.8%) group was significantly higher than that of LFHM (38.3%) group (p<0.05) and SFA composition of HFLM(33.8%) was significantly lower than that of LFHM group, (p<0.001) between them. The $\omega$6/$\omega$3 ratio of serum fatty acid tended to be higher in LFHM than in HFLM group but there was no significant difference between two groups. This study suggests that the dietary fat pattern of growing children could affect the change in total serum fatty acid composition though it did not influence serum lipid levels significantly. Energy and EPA intakes were negatively correlated with HDL-cholesterol levels(p<0.05). Serum fatty acid compositions were more closely correlated with serum triglyceride(TG) levels than serum cholesterol levels. Especially, total SFA (p<0.001) and individual SFA, such as C14:0(p<0.001) and C16:0(p<0.001)compositions were positively correlated with serum TG levels, but stearic acid(p<0.01) was negatively correlated with it.

  • Long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) are important components of brain phospholipds and play important role (s) in brain function. In rats, the maximum brain growth occurs during the period of lactation even though it happens during the third trimester of gestation in human. Since milk contained docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) even through the maternal diet had no DHA and/or a very small amount of its precursor, $\alpha$-linolenic acid ($\alpha$-LnA), an emphasis was given to maternal adipose tissue as a reservoir of this fatty acid. We, therefore, investigated the mesenteric and subcutaneous adipose tissues for their fatty acid composition in dams reared with different fat diets. Diets containing various amounts of $\omega$6 and $\omega$3 fatty acids were given to adult female rats (200-250g) throughout the pregnancy and lactation periods. Diets were composed of 10% (wt/wt) corn oil (CO), soybean oil (SO), perilla seed oil (PO) containing about 60% $\alpha$-LnA, or fish oil (FO) rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA. The fatty acid ompositions of mesenteric and subcutaneous fat were measured and evaluated at Day-2 and Day-15 after parturition. In general, major characteristics of dietary fatty acid composition was reflected on the fatty acid composition of adipose tissues. Dietary fatty acid composition was reflected more on mesenteric fat as compared to subcutaneous fat. Mesenteric fat was found to contain less arachidonic acid (AA) and mesenteric fats of CO, SO and PO groups contained less DHA than did the subcutaneous fat. The P/M/S ratios of adipose tissues were similar between experimental groups while dietary P/M/S ratios differed significantly. It was noticeable that a small proportion of DHA was found in the adipose tissues of animals of CO, SO and PO groups (Day-2) and in SO and PO groups (Day-15), the groups which do not contain DHA in their diets. The percentage of DHA in mesenteric fat o CO, SO and PO groups decreased as lactation continues, while the proportion of DHA in FO group increased. Adipose tissues of FO group had higher DHA/EPA ratio as compared to the diet. Considering the fact that the body contains a large amount of adipose tissues, our present finding suggests that the adipose tissue can serve as a reservoir of DHA for pregnant and lactating rats.

  • The physical properties of the TiN films deposited by ALD using $TiCl_4$and $NH_3$have been investigated. The TiN deposition rate is ~0.6 $\AA$ under an optimum deposition condition and the resistivity of the TiN films is 200~350 $\mu\Omega$cm . According to the XRD analysis results TiN films are crystallized in the ALD process window. AES analysis results show that the Cl impurity concentration in the TiN films is lower than 1 at% and that the atomic ratio of the TiN films is 1:1. Also it is found by SEM observation that the step coverage of the TiN films on which TiN films with trenches the aspect ratio of which is 10:1 is excellent.

  • Omega-shaped-gate (OSG) nanowire-based field effect transistors (FETs) have been attracted recently attention due to their highdevice performance expected from theoretical simulations among nanowire-based FETs with other gate geometries. OSG FETs with the channels of ZnO nanowires were successfully fabricated in this study with photolithographic processes. In the OSG FETs fabricated on oxidized Si substrates, the channels of ZnO nanowires with diameters of about 60 nm are coated surroundingly by $Al_{2}O_{3}$ as gate dielectrics with atomic layer deposition. About 80 % of the surfaces of the nanowires coated with $Al_{2}O_{3}$ is covered with gate metal to form OSG FETs. A representative OSG FET fabricated in this study exhibits a mobility of 98.9 $cm^{2}/Vs$, a peak transconductance of 0.4 ${\mu}S$, and an Ion/Ioff ratio of $10^6$ the value of the Ion/Ioff ratio obtained from this OSG FET is the highest among nanowire-based FETs, to our knowledge. Its mobility, peak transconductance, and Ion/Ioff ratio arc remarkably enhanced by 11.5, 32, and $10^6$ times, respectively, compared with a back-gate FET with the same ZnO nanowire channel as utilized in the OSG FET.

  • This paper deals with the dynamical analysis of a vessel that leads to capsize in regular beam seas. The complete investigation of nonlinear behaviors includes sub-harmonic motion, bifurcation, and chaos under variations of control parameters. The vessel rolling motions can exhibit various undesirable nonlinear phenomena. We have employed a linear-plus-cubic type damping term (LPCD) in a nonlinear rolling equation. Using the fourth order Runge-Kutta algorithm with the phase portraits, various dynamical behaviors (limit cycles, bifurcations, and chaos) are presented in beam seas. On increasing the value of control parameter ${\Omega}$, chaotic behavior interspersed with intermittent periodic windows are clearly observed in the numerical simulations. The chaotic region is widely spread according to system parameter ${\Omega}$ in the range of 0.1 to 0.9. When the value of the control parameter is increased beyond the chaotic region, periodic solutions are dominant in the range of frequency ratio ${\Omega}=1.01{\sim}1.6$. In addition, one more important feature is that different types of stable harmonic motions such as periodicity of 2T, 3T, 4T and 5T exist in the range of ${\Omega}=0.34{\sim}0.83$.

  • Male rats were fed diets containing perilla oil, sardine oil or corn oil for 15 weeks in order to investigate their antithrombotic effects. Rats given perilla oil and sardine oil diets showed significantly longer bleeding time, and lower level of malondialdehyde generation during thrombin-induced aggregation of platelets than rats given corn oil. With regard to the composition of platelet fatty acid, the ratio of eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) $(20:5{\omega}3)$ to arachidonic acid $(20:4{\omega}6)$ of perilla oil, sardine oil and corn oil treated rats were 0.54, 0.96 and 0.01, respectively, suggesting that linolenic acid $(18:3{\omega}3)$ of perilla oil was metabolized to EPA which is known to have antithrombotic activity.

  • Effects of high fat diet and/or endurance exercise training on hepatic total and phospholipid(PL) fatty acid compositions were evaluated in rats fed one of the following diets for 31 days. control diet(CD, 5 wt% corn oil) or high fat diet(HFD, 35 wt% corn oil). Half of the rats in each group were exercise-trained regularly on a treadmill for 90 minutes/day during the entire feeding period. Total and PL fatty acid compositions of hepatic lipid extracts were determined by a gas-liquid chromatograph),. Endurance exercise training did not change the daily food intake, but significantly reduced body weight gain and feed efficiency ratio of rats, which were most prominent in animals fed HFD. Exercise training did not significantly change the percentages of ∑saturated fatty acids (SFA) and ∑polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUEA), but decreased the percentage of ∑monounsaturated fatty acids(MUFA) in hepatic total fatty acids, which might be associated with the decrease in (equation omitted) 9-desaturation index of hepatic total fatty acid metabolism. Exercise training significantly lowered the percentages of 16 : 0 and 22 : 5$\omega$3, and increased the percentages of 20 : 1 and 20 : 3$\omega$3 in both total and PL fatty acid compositions in rat liver. Both total fatty acid and PL fatty acid compositions of rat liver responded more sensitively to changes in dietary fat content than to endurance exercise training in this study. Feeding HFD, whoch contains high level of linoleic acid(LA, 18 : 2$\omega$6), significantly decreased the percentages of ∑SFA and $\Sigma$MUFA, and increased the percentages of ∑PUFA and ∑$\omega$6 fatty acids of hepatic total fatty acids. Hepatic total fatty acid composition was affected by dietary fat content and dietary fatty acid composition more sensitively than those found in hepatic PL fatty acid composition. HFD significantly decreased most of desaturation indices, while exercise training significantly decreased elongation index(20 : 5$\omega$3⇒22 : 5$\omega$3) of hepatic total and PL fatty acid metabolism in rats. • This study estimates the classification criteria which distinguishes the types of omega-3 health functional foods, fish oils and fish oil usages through $^{13}C$-NMR spectra and fatty acids contents analysis. The major fatty acids of omega-3, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, $C_{20:5}$) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, $C_{22:6}$) are being analyzed. 10 ethyl ester (EE) forms and 10 triglyceride (TG) forms are the most common types of fish oils for 20 omega-3 products. Gas chromatography (GC) analysis generally shows the matching EPA and DHA contents of the products listed on the notation. But EE form contents of EPA and DHA are higher and are more varied than the TG form. Most of the samples of EPA/DHA ratio show different content ratios of indicated on the products when comparing with standards. The $^{13}C$-NMR analysis of EPA and DHA on sn-1,3 and sn-2 carbonyl peak position with fish oil triglycerides display whether the reconstituted triglycerides (rTG) are being confirmed or not. As a result of the 9 TG form, the 10 TG products showed similar values: EPA sn-1, 3; 13.46~15.66, sn-2; 3.00~4.52, DHA sn-1, 3; 2.43~4.40, sn-2; 3.84~6.36. But one product showed lower contents (EPA: sn-1, 3; 5.88, sn-2; 2.86, DHA sn-1, 3; 2.29, sn-2; 5.95) of EPA, thus it can be considered a different type of oil and only matched six products according to the label. This study is intended to provide basic materials which identify the status for the types and quality of omega-3 fish oil products according to fatty acids profiles and the $^{13}C$-NMR spectrum confirmed the location specificity of EPA and DHA.
