  • During the formation of large-scale structures in the universe, shocks with the sonic Mach number Ms <~ 5 are naturally induced by supersonic flow motions of baryonic matter in the intracluster medium (ICM). Cosmic rays (CRs) are expected to be accelerated via diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at these ICM shocks, although the existence of CR protons in the ICM remains to be confirmed through gamma-ray observations. Based on the results obtained from kinetic plasma simulations, we build an analytic DSA model for weak, quasi-parallel shocks in the test-particle regime. With our DSA model, the CR acceleration efficiency ranges ~ 0.001 - 0.02 in supercritical quasi-parallel shocks with sonic Mach number Ms ~ 2.25 - 5, and the acceleration would be negligible in subcritical shocks wth Ms <~ 2.25. Adopting our DSA model, we estimate gamma-ray and neutrino emissions from clusters of galaxies by performing cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. The estimated gamma-ray flux is below the Fermi-LAT upper limit. In addition, the possible neutrino emission due to the decay of charged pions in galaxy clusters would be about <~ 1% of the atmospheric neutrino intensity in the energy range of <~ 100 GeV. In this talk, we will discuss the implication of our results.

  • A series of ordinary concrete is casted in order to examine the influence of the manganiferous siltstone rocks on the physical, mechanical, and gamma-ray shielding properties. Thus, a partial replacement for the coarse aggregates by siltstone rocks was performed during the fabrication of the currently ordinary concrete. The test revealed that raising the siltstone concentration improved the mechanical characteristics and density of the developed concretes. The addition of siltstone rocks at concentrations ranging from 0 to 40 wt% of the coarse aggregate concentration raises the density of the concrete from 2.05 g/cm3 to 2.3 g/cm3. Furthermore, partial substitution of basalt with siltstone rocks improves gamma-ray shielding properties. The experimental results for the linear attenuation coefficient show an increase in its value from 0.146 cm1 to 0.160 cm-1 when the siltstone concentration is increased between 0 and 40 wt% at 0.662 MeV. Furthermore, increasing the concentrations of siltstone affected the half-value thickness, which varied between 4.759 and 4.319 cm at 0.662 MeV. Therefore, the replacement presents a new alternative coarse aggregate that can enhance the mechanical and radiation shielding properties of ordinary concretes.

  • In this study, a beta monitoring sensor was developed as a part of basic research for quantitative beta monitoring underwater, and its performance was evaluated using a calibration source. A beta detection sensor was manufactured by using SiPM(silicon photomultiplier) and $CaF_2$:Eu, YAG:Ce, YAP:Ce scintillator. A large-area light guide was introduced to improve beta-ray detection efficiency. As calibration sources, the Beta source $^{90}Sr$, which is the main fission product of a nuclear accident, and the gamma source $^{137}Cs$ are used. In the performance evaluation, it is confirmed that scintillator $CaF_2:Eu$ gives the highest beta-ray detection response. Compared to gamma ray, beta-ray detection responsivity and detection efficiency are verified. Therefore, this study is expected to contribute to basic research in the development of an underwater beta-ray monitoring system.

  • The gamma irradiation was on to Poly(butylene sebacate-co-terephthalate) (PBSeT), Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and casting polypropylene (CPP) at dose levels from 0 to 50 kGy. The properties of gamma irradiated samples were analyzed using DSC, TGA, UTM and FT-IR spectra. The mechanical and thermal properties of PBSeT and PBAT after gamma irradiation were less affected than CPP. The tensile strength and elongation of PBSeT was not affected by gamma irradiation, while these of PBAT, PLA and CPP were significantly decreased at 50 kGy gamma-ray dose. The thermal stability of PBSeT, PBAT, PLA and CPP showed a similar tendency to tensile strength. The glass transition temperature(Tg) and melting temperature(Tm) of PBSeT and PBAT were not altered by increasing gamma-ray dose, while these of PLA and CPP decreased. The chemical composition of all samples was not modified by gamma irradiation, and it was confirmed by FT-IR spectra. Based on mechanical and thermal stability studies of gamma irradiation on bioplastics, tested biodegradable packaging materials showed a potential to be used in sterilization process up to 35 kGy.

  • Phytophthora blight of pepper, which is caused by Phytophthora capsici Leonian, is not only the most destructive disease worldwide, but also difficult to control effectively. It has been needed to have new trials for effective control to the disease. We employed radiation hormesis of gamma ray as the new trial in the control strategy. Two cultivars, Kwangbok and Dabok, were used to analyse whether gamma ray radiation can induce disease resistance. The germination rate of pepper seeds was significantly enhanced by the radiation at all dose levels. Stimulatory effect for resistance induction was found to differ between cultivars. It was confirmed that the remarkable effect was induced in Dabok and depended on radiation dosage. Disease resistance at 4 Gy was much higher than that of control. On the other hand, no detectable induction effect for resistance was observed in Kwangbok which was moderate resistant cultivar to gamma ray radiation. • Spent PWR fuel rods have been scanned axially and sectionally to measure the relative gamma-ray intensity of Cs-137 and then bumups of the scanned rods determined by measuring Nd-148 which has been chemically separated. From these experimental results, a linear relation(LR) between the gamma-ray intensity of Cs-137 and the bumup in the range of 10∼35 GWD/MTU was obtained. In order to validate the LR, the Cs-137 gamma-ray intensity of unknown sample was nondestructively measured and the bumup obtained by the LR was compared with that of the Nd-148 method. It is revealed that the results from both methods are in good agreement, and thus it seems to be possible to estimate the bumup of spent PWR fuel rod by measuring nondestructively gamma-ray of fission product Cs-137.

  • This study was prepared to observe the change of enzyme activities in kidney treated with red ginseng extract in the gamma ray irradiated mice. Determine the activity of SOD, peroxidase, catalase in the kidney a period of 1 day, 2 day, 3 day, 4 day, 5 day after a saline injection or injection of red ginseng extract or gamma ray irradiatied group into four classify. The activity SOD and catalase showed a tendency to increase and recovery at the early state but pay no regard. Wherease, the activity of peroxide restored and increased pay regard. A physiological saline injection group after gamma ray irradiation showed a tendency to diminish after remakable increase of activity of SOD, peroxidase and catalase than control group. Injection group of red ginseng extract after gamma ray irradiation observed rapid recovery on activity of SOD, peroxidase, catalase than a saline injection group. Experimental result suggested that injection of red ginseng extract after irradiation have the recovery effect on the changed of activity of SOD, peroxidase and catalase against radiation injury.

  • Gamma ray irradiation mutagenesis was employed to get variants of Pleurotus eryngii with functionally enhanced and improved characteristics. Protoplasts released from P. eryngii were treated with gamma ray radiation under 0.25-1.25 KGy. Protoplast sample that showed fatality rate of 80% at the 0.25 KGy was spreaded on YPMGA (yeast, peptone, malt-extract, glucose, agar) and 500 mycelial colonies were randomly selected from the medium. Of them, 100 mutant strains with mycelial morphology and growth rate that differ to control strain were observed on PDA. The cellulase and laccase activity of 67 gamma ray-irradiated P. eryngii isolates with morphological variation were investigated. Among these, 5 isolates were higher cellulase. In addition, the genetic variation of the mutant strains was analyzed by PCR fingerprinting.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of a gamma ray irradiation to decompose hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) in an aqueous solution. The decomposition reaction of RDX by gamma ray irradiation was a first-order kinetic over the applied initial concentrations (10-40mg/L). The dose constant was strongly dependent on the initial concentration of the RDX. The removal of RDX was more efficient at pH below 3 and at pH above 11 than at neutral pH (pH 5-9). The required irradiation dose to remove 99% of the RDX (40mg/L) was 4, 8 and 1 kGy, at pH 2, 7 and 13, respectively. The dose constant was increased by two folds and over twelve folds at pH 2 and 13, respectively, when compared with that at pH 7. When an irradiation dose of 20 kGy was applied, the removal efficiencies of TOC were 80, 57 and 91% at pH 2, 7 and 13, respectively. Ammonia and nitrate were detected as the main nitrogen byproducts of RDX and formic acid was detected as an organic byproduct. The results showed that a gamma ray irradiation was an attractive method for the decomposition of RDX in an aqueous solution and it was found that a strong alkaline pH over 12 should be applied to the decomposition reaction of RDX.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of proton ion and gamma-ray irradiation on microspore culture of the flower buds of $M_2$ generation in winter type of Brassica napus L. ssp. oleifera. The seeds of three rape varieties, 'Halla', 'Naehan' and 'Tammi' were pretreated with proton ion and gamma-ray 400 Gy and 600 Gy, respectively. When microspore culture techniques were used, embryogenesis was increased in some varieties by proton ion and gamma-ray irradiation treated flower buds of $M_2$ generation than control. In genotypes 'Naehan' showed the highest embryo production frequency, but 'Tammi' showed lowest embryo production frequency. Some of the embryoids developed directly into plantlets, whereas others developed abnormally multilobe. Plants were regenerated and successfully acclimatized in pots.
