  • For high value-added applications of natural blue diatomite, the physical refining process and synthesis of SiC from refined diatomite were investigated. Approximately 30 percent Fe ($Fe_2O_3$) in raw blue diatomite was removed by a particle sieve separation process; the Fe composition for 325 mesh down powder was approximately 2 percent. Although a wet and/or dry magnetic separation process had some influence on the separation and/or refining of Fe composition, the Fe composition in the non-magnetic by-product was approximately 2 percent. Water leaching separation was effective in removing the Fe composition; approximately 40 percent of the Fe in raw blue diatomite was removed. The synthesis of ${\beta}$-SiC by a carbothermal reduction of the $SiO_2$ in the refined diatomite using carbon (graphite, carbon black), the effects of an acid-treatment on removing the Fe, and the specific surface area for the synthesized powder were also investigated. The impurities were mostly eliminated and the specific surface area was increased to $52.5m^2/g$.

  • In this study, materials for spectacle lens cutting were fabricated by hot-pressing and annealing SiC powders with $Al_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$. A microstructure that consisted of uniformly distributed, large SiC grains and elongated SiC grains was developed by using ${\alpha}$-SiC powders. The microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscope(SEM). By hot-pressing and subsequent annealing, elongated ${\beta}$-SiC grains were grown via ${\beta}{\rightarrow}{\alpha}$ phase. This is caused the crack deflection as toughening mechanism. Typical hardness and fracture toughness of materials for spectacle lens cutting were 13.3 GPa and $4.8MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

  • SiC particles (average size is 270 nm) of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 vol% were dispersed in $Si_{3}N_{4}$, and $Si_{3}N_{4}/SiC$ nanocomposites were fabricated by hot press. After sintering, matrix phase, ${\alpha}-Si_{3}N_{4}$ was transformed to ${\beta}-Si_{3}N_{4}$, and second phase, ${\beta}-SiC$ was not changed. No grain boundary crystalline phase by adding of sintering additives was detected. Grain growth of $Si_{3}N_{4}$ was supressed with increasing of SiC contents, and then fine grain was occurred. The highest fracture strength was obtained at 10 vol% SiC, and fracture toughness was decreased, but hardness was linearly increased with SiC content.

  • Silicon nitride - silicon carbide composite was developed by using an abrasive SiC powders as a raw material. The composites were prepared by mixing abrasive SiC powder with silicon, pressing and sintering at $1400^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen atmosphere in atmosphere controlled vacuum furnace. The proportion of silicon in the initial mixtures varied from 20 to 50 wt%. After sintering, crystalline phases and microstructure were characterized. All composites consisted of ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ and ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ as the bonding phases in SiC matrix. Their physical and mechanical properties were also determined. It was found that the density of the obtained composites increased with an increase in the $Si_3N_4$ content formed in the reaction.

  • In order to clarify the wear resistance as cutting tools, the effect of oxygen addition on oxidation behavior of the ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ ceramics with 5 mass% $Y_2O_3$ and 2 or 4 mass% $Al_2O_3$ was investigated by performing oxidation tests in air at $1300^{\circ}$ to $1400^{\circ}C$ and cutting performance tests. From test results, we could conclude that the mechanical properties of ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ ceramics depending on oxygen introduction are much effective on cutting performance improvements of ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ ceramics.

  • The microstructures of finely distributed Si-phases in $\beta$-$FeSi_2$ thermoelectric matrix, were produced by heat-treating the melt-cast ingots of single $\alpha$-$Fe_2Si_5$ phase at 730~85$0^{\circ}C$ for 4~20 hours, or by resistance-hot-pressing the mechanically alloyed powders ordinarily consisting of $\varepsilon$-FeSi and Si phases at 760~85$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes of composition. $(Fe_{0.98}Mn_{0.02})_xSi_2(x{\leq$}1) The size and interspacing of dispersed Si-phases were able to control within a range of 0.05~0.27$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 0.2~0.6$\mu\textrm{m}$ by variations of heat treatment temperature and sintering temperature as well as the composition. respectively. The dispersion of Si- phases was expected to be effective for the reduction of thermal conductivity responsible for the increment of thermoelectric figure of merit.

  • This manuscript reports on compared color evolution about phase transformation of ${\alpha}-FeOOH@SiO_2$ and ${\beta}-FeOOH@SiO_2$ pigments. Prepared ${\alpha}$-FeOOH and ${\beta}$-FeOOH were coated with silica for enhancing thermal properties and coloration of both samples. To study phase and color of ${\alpha}$-FeOOH and ${\beta}$-FeOOH, we prepared nano sized iron oxide hydroxide pigments which were coated with $SiO_2$ using tetraethylorthosilicate and cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide as a surface modifier. The silica-coated both samples were calcined at high temperatures (300, 700 and $1000^{\circ}C$) and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color parameter measurements, transmission electron microscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy. The yellow ${\alpha}$-FeOOH and ${\beta}$-FeOOH was transformed to ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ with red, brown at 300, $700^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Iron- silicide has been produced by mechanical alloying process and consolidated by hot pressing. As-consolidated iron silicides were consisted of $\beta$-FeSi$_2$ phase, and untransformed mixture of $\alpha$-$Fe_2Si_5$ and $\varepsilon$-FeSi phases. Isothermal annealing has been carried out to induce the transformation to a thermoelectric semiconducting $\beta$-$FeSi_2$ phase. The condition for $\beta$-FeSi$_2$ transformation was investigated by utilizing DTA, SEM, TEM and XRD analysis. The phase transformation was shown to be taken place by a vacuum isothermal annealing at $830^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The mechanical and thermoelectric properties of $\beta$-FeSi$_2$ materials before and after isothermal annealing were characterized in this study.

  • Alumina- and yttria-coated SiC powder was prepared by the surface-induced precipitation method, and sintered properties of silicon carbide prepared from this powder were investigated. After a well dispersion of SiC powders in the aqueous solution of $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and $Y_2(SO_4)_3$, the mixed precursors of aluminum hydroxide, aluminum carbonate, yttrium hydroxide, and yttrium carbonate were precipitated on the surfaces of SiC particles through the hydrolysis reaction of urea. SiC specimens with alumina and yttria exhibit, 97.8% of theoretical density after the sintering at $1900^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. During annealing at $2000^{\circ}C$, $\beta$longrightarrow$\alpha$ phase transformation of SiC had taken place and resulted with a rodlike microstructure. Toughness of sintered SiC was enhanced by crack deflection around the rodlike grains. In case of annealing less than that of 3 hr, the fracture toughness of SiC was slightly improved with increasing the amount of sintering aid. However, annealed specimens for a long time showed constant fracture toughness even though the amount of sintering aid increased. It is resulted that the main factor for toughening in annealed SiC for a long time is the pullout effect of rodlike grains during the propagation of cracks, and the amount of sintering aids is less effective on the fracture toughness of SiC.
