The reforming catalyst and the electrodes in fuel cells can be poisoned by the organic sulfur compound which is added as an odorant for checking out the leakage of natural gas, and that makes a big problem of system degradation. In this study, various adsorbents, such as silica, ${\gamma}$-alumina, activated carbon, HZSM-5, Ultra-stable Y zeolite (USY), and beta zeolite (BEA), were utilized to remove tetra-hydrothiophene (THT) and tert-butylmercaptan (TBM), and to confirm the performance in the adsorption of those odorants by using a continuous adsorptive bed. The effects of Si/Al ratio of zeolites, adsorption temperature and the type of balance gas (methane or He) on the adsorption performance in the packed bed have been investigated. In addition, the competitive adsorption between TBM and THT on the adsorbents was also estimated. The result shows that H-type BEA zeolite exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for TBM and THT odorant, and the higher amount of THT was removed adsorptively on the same adsorbent than TBM. The physical and chemical adsorption of those compounds on acid sites of zeolite were confirmed by temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and infrared spectrum (IR) analyses.

Currently, Ash-free clean coal producing process by solvent extraction is under development. The produced ash-free clean coal can be directly combusted in a gas turbine which results in substantial improvement of power generation efficiency. However, the clean coal produced by the solvent extraction still contain trace amount of alkali metal which may cause corrosion on turbine blades during the direct combustion. In present work ${\alpha},{\beta}$-metal (Zr and Ti) phosphates and H-Y zeolite were synthesized and their ion exchange characterizations were investigated for the application on alkali metal removal for clean coal production. $Na^+$ ion removal capacities of the metal phosphates and H-Y zeolite were measured and compared in both aqueous solution (100 ppmw, $Na^+$) and coal dissolved N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP, 12 ppmw $Na^+$) at elevated temperature. In aqueous solution, the ${\beta}$ form metal phosphates showed very high ion exchange capacities compared to ${\alpha}$ form. ${\beta}$ form metal phosphates also showed higher $Na^+$ removal capacities than H-Y zeolite. In ion exchange medium of NMP, all the ${\alpha}$ form metal phosphates showed over 90% of $Na^+$ ion removal efficiency in the temperature range of 200 to 400 while that of H-Y zeolite decreased as a half when the temperature was over 350. In addition, the regenerated metal phosphates by acid treatment showed no sign of degradation in $Na^+$ removal efficiency. Among the metal phosphates used, $Zr_{0.75}Ti_{0.25}(HPO_4)_2$ showed the best performance in $Na^+$ removal and is expected to be the most suitable inorganic ion exchanger for the alkali metal removal process.
Methods to prepare novel second-order nonlinear optical (2O-NLO) materials composed of all-silica zeolite (silicalite-1) and a series of 2O-NLO molecules having high second order hyperpolarizability constants (${\beta}$ values) are reviewed. These methods include the development of novel methods to incorporate a series of hemicyanine (HC) molecules into the channels of silicaite-1 films in uniform orientations. The first method is to incorporate HC molecules tethered with long alkyl chains (octadecyl or longer) into the silicalite-1 channels with the long alkyl chain side first through the hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction between the long alky chains and the silicalite-1 channels. The second method is to incorporate the HC molecule tethered with a medium length alkyl chain (nonyl) into the silicalite-1 channels with the medium length alkyl chain side first through hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction between the medium length alky chain in the photoexcited state and the silicalite-1 channels. The third method is to incorporate the HC molecule tethered with propionic acid into the silicalite-1 channels with the propionic acid side last mediated by a tetrabultylammonium cation ion-paired to the propionate unit. A method to prepare a novel third-order nonlinear optical (3O-NLO) material composed of zeolite-Y and PbS or PbSe quantum dots is also reviewed. This Account thus describes a promising new direction to which the search for highly sensitive 2O-NLO and 3O-NLO materials has to be conducted and a new direction to which zeolite research and applications have to be expanded.
Manganese(III) 5-(4-carboxyphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenyl porphyrin chloride (Mn(TCPP)Cl) was grafted through amide bond on silica zeolite Y (HY), zeolite beta ($H{\beta}$) and hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS). XRD, ICP-AES, $N_2$ physisorption, SEM, TEM, FTIR and thermal analysis were employed to analyse these novel heterogeneous materials. These silica supported catalysts were shown to be used for epoxidation and good shape selectivity was observed. The effect of support structure on catalytic performance was also discussed. The catalytic activity remained when the catalysts were recycled five times. The energy changes about epoxidation of alkenes by $NaIO_4$ and $H_2O_2$ were also computationally calculated to explain the different catalytic efficiency.

Catalyst-assisted plasma system with a DBD (Dielectric Barrier Discharge) reactor was used to remove hydrogen sulfide, which is one of the odorous species in this study. The ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and ${\beta}$-Zeolite catalysts impregnated by Ag, Cu and Mn species were employed as catalysts and their $H_2S$ removal characteristics under plasma irradiation were investigated. From the experimental study, we found that the $H_2S$ removal efficiency increases with decreasing space velocity in the system and increasing specific input energy. Furthermore, ${\beta}$-Zeolite catalysts are efficient to remove $H_2S$ than ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts. Especially, the catalysts impregnated by Ag have higher removal efficiency than other catalysts (Cu, Mn).
The direct conversion of cellulose into polyols in $H_2$ was examined over Pt catalysts supported on various zeolites, viz., mordenite, Y, ferrierite, and ${\beta}$. For comparison, Pt catalysts supported on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2-Al_2O_3$, and $SiO_2$ were also tested. The physical properties of the catalysts were probed with $N_2$ physisorption. The surface acidity was measured with temperature programmed desorption of ammonia ($NH_3$-TPD). The Pt content was quantified with inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The Pt dispersion was determined with CO chemisorptions and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The conversion of cellulose appeared to be mainly dependent on the reaction temperature and reaction time because it depends on the concentration of $H^+$ ions reversibly formed in hot water. Pt/H-mordenite (20) showed the highest yield to polyols among the tested catalysts. Pt/H-zeolite was superior to Pt/Na-zeolite for this reaction. The polyol yield was dependent on the surface acid density and the external surface area.
Mineral description and mineralogical characterization were made for the wellsite, a barrian zeolite, which found as diagenetic alterations in the Miocene pyroclastic rocks in Gampo area. The wellsite occurs together with clinoptilolite, smectite and apatite as euhedral crystallites (0.2~0.4mm) forming interpenetraion twinning in the vesicles of altered pmice fragments. Compared to other reported wellsites, the wellsite is rather silicic (Si/(Al+Fe): 3.12-3.16) and Ca-rich. Unit cell dimensions and chemical formular determined from XRD, EMPA and TGA data are as follows:a=9.883$\AA$, b=14.204$\AA$, c=8.677$\AA$, $\beta$-124.764$^{\circ}$, (Ba0.57K0.36)(Ca1.18Na0.04)Al3.9Si12.1O32.13.9H2O.The cation composition of the Gampo wellsite, which shows an exchange reaction in the form of Ba2++Ca2+=2(K++Na-), is deviated far from the compositional range of a phillipsite-harmotome series. Due to higher abundance of divalent cations (Ca, Ba) and si in the wellsite, cimpared to those of the phillipsite and harmotome reported in other areas, the zeolite seems to be characteristic of higher water content (18.7 wt%) and higher thermal stability. XRD, chemical and thermo-chemical results of the wellsite reflects that wellsite is rather a Ba- and Ca-rich end member of a phillipsite-harmotome-wellsite series than an intermediate phase of phillipsite-harmotome series or a barrian variety of phillipste.
The effect of heat-treatment temperature on the activity of catalysts was studied by investigating $N_2O$ decomposition reaction in Fe ion-supported BEA Zeolite. As a result of $N_2O$ decomposition reaction experiment, $N_2O$ decomposition activity significantly decreased as heat-treatment temperature of Fe/BEA catalyst increased. the shape and size of the particles of Fe/BEA catalyst following the rise of heat-treatment temperature did not display a significant change. But following the rise of the heat-treatment temperature, its surface area was significantly reduced. Also it was confirmed that as the heat-treatment temperature rose, the crystallization of ${\beta}$ structure was greatly reduced. And as heat-treatment temperature rose, while SiO structure either increased or did not exhibit much change, the structure of Fe bonded with lattice structure was speculated to decrease. From the stated results, it was concluded that the increase of heat-treatment temperature became the cause of the declined activity of catalysts by destruction of its ${\beta}$ structure of bonding aluminium and Fe atoms.
The catalytic properties of large pore zeolite (mordenite, beta, and Y) with 12-membered rings were comparatively evaluated in the synthesis of diethylamines from ethanol amination. The number of strong acid sites, which obviously promoted the formation of mono- and diethylamines, was decreased with the increase of Si/Al ratio of the zeolites that were used. H-beta and H-Y zeolites with multidimensional pore channels favorably formed diethylether by the dimerization of ethanol, due to their large cage volumes and low acid strength. On the other hand, H-mordenite which has one dimensional straight channel was shown to be suitable for the formation of mono- and diethylamine which are well known as the useful intermediates of fine chemicals.
Acidic properties of ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts were investigated by temperature-programmed desorption technique and ir spectroscopy. Ammonia t.p.d. pattern of HZSM-5 showed three different states, designated as ${\alpha}$,${\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$. The amount of ${\gamma}$-state decreased with increasing $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio, and upon cation-exchanging with alkali cations. From the ir adsorption spectra of absorbed pyridine and the reaction study of toluene alkylation, the ${\gamma}$-state could be explained to be due to the strong Bronsted acid sites of H-ZSM-5. Also they showed that the interaction between alkali cation-exchanged ZSM-5 and bases, i.e. $NH_3$ and pyridine, was increasing with decreasing the size of cations.
