  • By applying a catalytic amount of indium trichloride, regioselective ring-opening of epoxides to ${\beta}$-hydroxy ethers was established. While the alcoholysis of styrene oxides produed $S_N1$-type product, the alcoholysis of ${\alpha}$-heteroatom-substituted epoxides predominantly produced $S_N2$-type product.

  • The chemical reduction of Pseudomonas syringae subsp. phaseolicola alginates produces neutral polymers of D-mannose and L-gulose in source specific ratios. L-Gulose was highly sensitive to degradation by 1N HCl at $100^{\circ}C$. As hydrolysis time increased, gulose recovery decreased to 22% after 4 hr, whereas 98% of the D-mannose was recovered under the same conditions. Thin layer chromatography showed the formation of a second product upon L-gulose acid hydrolysis. This new product had a rate of flow (Rf) value of 0.58, identical to that of 1,6 anhydro-${\beta}$-D-mannopyranose and very close to that of 1,6 anhydro-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranose (Rf=0.60). Because of the difference in acid sensitivity between L-gulose and D-mannose, normal acid hydrolytic techniques applied to reduced alginates produces erroneous mannuronic acid (M): guluronic acid (G) ratio's unless one accounts for the differential rates of destruction of each sugar.

  • In [25] Taskinen shows that if $\{E_n\}_n\;and\;\{F_n\}_n$ are two sequences of Frechet spaces such that ($E_m,\;F_n$) has the BB-property for all m and n then (${\Pi}_m\;E_m,\;{\Pi}_n\;F_n$) also has the ΒΒ-property. Here we investigate when this result extends to (i) arbitrary products of Frechet spaces, (ii) countable products of DFN spaces, (iii) countable direct sums of Frechet nuclear spaces. We also look at topologies properties of ($H(U),\;\tau$) for U balanced open in a product of Frechet spaces and $\tau\;=\;{\tau}_o,\;{\tau}_{\omega}\;or\;{\tau}_{\delta}$.

  • For the purpose to treatment of skin disease genipoiside and hydrolyzed product of Gardeniae Fructus were studied on skin permeation and crosslinking of a biologied tissue. Geniposide was hydrolyzed to genipin by ${\beta}$-glucosidase and the rate of hydrolysis was rapid on the condition of high temperature of medium and high concentration of ${\beta}$-glucosidase. The permeation enhancing effects of geniposide and genipin under cream and gel preparations were tested using Franz type diffusion cell and the skin of hairless mouse. (omitted)

  • A phytochemical investigation of the ethanolic extract of Erythrina caffra flowers from an Egyptian origin yielded three C-flavonoidal glycosides; 5,7,4'-trihydroxyflavone-8-C-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (vitexin) (1), 5,7,4'-trihydroxyflavone-6-C-$\beta$-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 $\rightarrow$ 2)-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (isovitexin-2"-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside) (2), 5, 7, 4'-trihydroxyflavone-6, 8-di-C-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (vicenin-2) (3) and one O-flavonoidal glycoside; kaempferol-3-O-$\beta$-D.glucopyranosyl) (1 $\rightarrow$ 2)-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (4). The structures of the isolated compounds (1 - 4) were elucidated using different spectral techniques (UV, 1D and 2D NMR and HRESIMS). This is the first report for the isolation of flavonoidal glycosides from Erythrina caffra. The antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, and antileishmanial activities of the isolates were evaluated. In addition, the cytotoxic activity of the ethanolic extract and the main fractions were tested using brine shrimp bioassay.

  • ${CO_3}^{2-}$ containing whisker-like hydroxyapatite powders were synthesized byhomogeneous precipitation method using urea, Dicalcium phosphate anhdrate[DCPA; $CaHPO_4$] and octacalcium phosphate [OCP; $Ca_8H_2(PO_4_)6\cdot5H_20$]were obtained as precursors and they transformed to high crystalline hydroxyapatites at pH 5.62, and 6.54 respectively. According to the condition of the final pH in the solutions for the solution products and urea contents OCP was remained. When the solution product of $Ca^{2-}$ and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ was $1.5\times 10^4$[$mM^2$] and the content of urea was 0.25 mol.$dm^{-3}$ well crystallized whisker-like hydroxyapatite tens of micrometer in length was obtained. By heat treatment DCPA and OCP were decomposed into $\beta$-tricalcium phosphate [$\beta$-TCP ; $\beta$-$Ca_3{PO_4}_2$] and $\beta$-dicalcium phosphate [$\beta$-DCP ;$\beta$-$Ca_2P_2O_4}_2$]. And well-crystallized hydroxyapatite was partially decomposed into $\beta$-TCP at $800^{\circ}C$.

  • In this present work, the authors obtain Fekete-Szeg$\ddot{o}$ inequality for certain normalized analytic function $f(z)$ defined on the open unit disk for which $$\frac{{\lambda}{\beta}z^3(L(a,c)f(z))^{{\prime}{\prime}{\prime}}+(2{\lambda}{\beta}+{\lambda}-{\beta})z^2(L(a,c)f(z))^{{\prime}{\prime}}+z(L(a,c)f(z))^{{\prime}}}{{\lambda}{\beta}z^2(L(a,c)f(z))^{{\prime}{\prime}}+({\lambda}-{\beta})z(L(a,c)f(z))^{\prime}+(1-{\lambda}+{\beta})(L(a,c)f(z))}\;(0{\leq}{\beta}{\leq}{\lambda}{\leq}1)$$ lies in a region starlike with respect to 1 and is symmetric with respect to the real axis. Also certain applications of the main result for a class of functions defined by Hadamard product (or convolution) are given. As a special case of this result, Fekete-Szeg$\ddot{o}$ inequality for a class of functions defined through fractional derivatives are obtained.

  • A gene from Paenibacillus sp. KCTC 8848P encoding ${\beta}-amylase$ was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The Paenibacillus ${\beta}-amylase$ gene cosisted of a 2,409-bp open reading frame without a translational stop codon, encoding a protein of 803 amino acids. The presumed ribosime-binding site, GGAGG, was located 10 bp upstream from the TTG initiation codon. The deduced amino acid sequence of the ${\beta}-amylase$ gene had a 95% similarity to the ${\beta}-amylase$ of Bacillus firmus. The ${\beta}-amylase$ gene was introduced into wild-type strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae using a linearized yeast integrating vector containing a geneticin resistance gene and its product was secreted into the culture medium.

  • The three flavone glycosides, 4'-O-methylisoscutellarein 7-O-(6'''-O-acetyl)-${\beta}$-D-allopyranosyl(1${\rightarrow}$2)-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (1), isoscutellarein 7-O-(6'''-O-acetyl)-${\beta}$-D-allopyranosyl(1${\rightarrow}$2)-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (3), and isoscutellarein 7-O-${\beta}$-D-allopyranosyl(1${\rightarrow}$2)-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (4) in addition to a flavonol glycoside, kaempferol 3-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (astragalin, 2), were isolated from Stachys japonica (Lamiaceae). In cholinesterase inhibition assay, compound 1 significantly inhibited aceylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activities ($IC_{50}s$, $39.94{\mu}g/ml$ for AChE and $86.98{\mu}g/ml$ for BChE). The content of isolated compounds were evaluated in this plant extract by HPLC analysis. Our experimental results suggest that the flavonoid glycosides of S. japonica could prevent the memory impairment of Alzheimer's disease.

  • Amyloid $\beta$-peptide (A$\beta$), which is a product of the proteolytic effect of $\beta$-secretase (BACE) on an amyloid precursor protein, is closely associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. There is sufficient evidence to suggest that a BACE inhibitor may reduce A$\beta$ levels, thus decreasing the risk of AD. In a previous study, an extract of Clavicorona pyxidata DGUM 29005 mycelia was found to inhibit the production of a soluble $\beta$-amyloid precursor protein (s$\beta$APP), A$\beta$, and BACE in neuronal cell lines. We sought to determine whether this mycelial extract exerts the same effect in human rhabdomyosarcoma A-204 and rat pheochromocytoma PC-12 cells. We found that the production of A$\beta$ decreased in a dose-dependent manner in the presence of the mycelial extract and that the concentration of A$\beta$ never exceeded $50{\mu}g/ml$. The presence of sAPP was detected in every culture medium to which the mycelial extract had been added and its concentration remained the same, regardless of the concentration of the extract used. Endogenous $\beta$-secretase activity in A-204 and PC-12 cellular homogenates also decreased in the presence of this extract. These cells, in culture, were not susceptible to the cytotoxic activity of the mycelial extract.
