  • The spent mushroom substrate (SMS) of Lentinula edodes that was derived from sawdust bag cultivation was used as materials for controlling Phytophthora blight disease of pepper. Water extract from SMS (WESMS) of L. edodes inhibited mycelial growth of Phytophthora capsici, suppressed Phytophthora blight disease of pepper seedlings by 65% and promoted growth of the plant over 30%. In high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis, oxalic acid was detected as the main organic acid compound in WESMS and inhibited the fungal mycelium at a minimum concentration of 200 mg/l. In quantitative real-time PCR, the transcriptional expression of CaBPR1 (PR protein 1), CaBGLU (${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase), CaPR-4 (PR protein 4), and CaPR-10 (PR protein 10) were significantly enhanced on WESMS and DL-${\beta}$-aminobutyric acid (BABA) treated pepper leaves. In addition, the salicylic acid content was also increased 4 to 6 folds in the WESMS and BABA treated pepper leaves compared to water treated leaf sample. These findings suggest that WESMS of L. edodes suppress Phytophthora blight disease of pepper through multiple effects including antifungal activity, plant growth promotion, and defense gene induction.

  • This study was to examine whether an elderly can health-related quality of life(EQ-5D) by the mediating effect of dental health determinants on the association between health practice behavior and EQ-5D. The analysis was conducted on 1,311 of above the age of 65 in elderly by using raw data from the 2015 National Health and Nutrition Survey. The data were analyzed using SPSS for windows version 24.0 and SPSS PROCESS-macro. The health practice behavior and EQ-5D by living arrangement were the highest in the one-generation family(4.62, 0.90) and the lowest the elderly living alone(4.40, 0.86). Also, analysis using the PROCESS macro indicated that the FS-T index has a mediating effect between health practice behavior and EQ-5D(${\beta}=.0011$, BCCI [.003~.0024]). These findings suggest that FS-T index is closely related to EQ-5D and this will be used as basic data for development of health promotion programs for elderly.

  • This study was conducted to understand the relationship between elementary students' beliefs supporting aggression, aggression and self-esteem. In addition, we aimed to provide basic data for controlling the aggression of children and developing effective coping strategies. This study population consisted of 184 elementary school students. Data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 program. As a result, the aggression of elementary school students showed a significant positive correlation with beliefs supporting aggression(r=.39, p<.001) and a significant negative correlation with self-esteem(r=-.46, p<.001). In addition, Results of the hierarchical regression analysis revealed that self-esteem has the mediating effect on the relationship between beliefs supporting aggression and aggression(${\beta}=.26$, p<.001). In other words, the higher the beliefs supporting aggression, the higher the aggression, and self-esteem means to act as a mediating effect in the relationship between them. Therefore, when arranging an intervention plan to control the aggression of elementary school students, it is necessary to find strategies to control the beliefs spporting aggression and increase self-esteem.

  • This study used data from the 3rd and 11th year of the Korean Welfare Panel to evaluate the effects of the Long-Term Care Insurance(LTCI) system on the consumption and expenditure of LTCI users' households. The study consisted of program group using LTCI and control group not using. Chi-square and t-test were used for the characteristic differences among the groups, and the difference of consumption expenditure was identified by multiple regression analysis. As a result, LTCI had a statistically significant effect on the health care costs of LTCI users' households, resulting in an increase in health care costs(${\beta}=3.06$). However, there was no statistically significant effect on the total cost of living, basic cost, education cost, and recreation/entertainment cost. Therefore, in order to show the effect of LTC system, we should try to reduce of self-pay and improve the contents and quality of the service of the LTC system.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the chemical and intracellular antioxidant activities of ${\beta}$-carotene and lycopene and to compare their quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR). In our previous study, the second ionization energy of lycopene was higher than that of ${\beta}$-carotene, as calculated by QSAR. Chemical antioxidant activities of ${\beta}$-carotene, lycopene, and Trolox were examined by measuring ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. Intracellular antioxidant activities were evaluated by intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and DNA fragmentation. The FRAP of lycopene was higher than that of ${\beta}$-carotene (P<0.05), and the two carotenoids had similar antioxidant activities in DPPH radical scavenging activity assay. Trolox had the greatest chemical antioxidant activities (P<0.05). When RAW264.7 cells were treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (100 ng/mL) for 20 h, intracellular ROS and DNA fragmentation significantly increased (P<0.05). RAW 264.7 cells pretreated with ${\beta}$-carotene ($4{\mu}M$) and lycopene ($0.4{\sim}2{\mu}M$) for 4 h formed significantly less intracellular ROS than LPS-treated control cells (P<0.05), whereas cells with Trolox did not reduce production of intracellular ROS. In addition, cells pretreated with $2{\mu}M$ lycopene produced less intracellular ROS than those treated with ${\beta}$-carotene (P<0.05). DNA fragmentation of cells with ${\beta}$-carotene and lycopene was similar to that of LPS-treated control cells as measured by Hoechst staining. The antioxidant ability of lycopene was greater than that of ${\beta}$-carotene in the QSAR, FRAP, and intracellular ROS assays (P<0.05). ${\beta}$-Carotene and lycopene had lower antioxidant activities as measured by FRAP (P<0.05) but higher intracellular protective effects against LPS-induced oxidative stress in comparison with Trolox.
