The effect of powder A2/powder A3 mixing ratio on color and translucency parameters of dental porcelain

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study is to mix dental ceramic powder in varying ratios and evaluate the effect of the mixing ratio on color and translucency. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The ceramic powder of shade A3 of the same product was mixed with the shade A2 of three products: IPS e.max Ceram (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), Vintage Halo (SHOFU Inc., Kyoto, Japan), and Ceramco 3 (Ceramco-Dentsply, Burlington, NJ, USA) in the following fixed ratios (0 wt%, 25 wt%, 50 wt%, 75 wt%, and 100 wt%) and then fired. A total of 150 specimen of ceramic fired were manufactured in a regular size (W: 8.5 mm, L: 10.5 mm, and H: 1.5 mm). For color and translucency, $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ were measured and Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for data analysis (${\alpha}$=0.05). RESULTS. The higher the mixing ratio was, $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ of IPS e.max Ceram were all increased, and $L^*$ of Vintage Halo was reduced and $a^*$ and $b^*$ were increased. $L^*$ and $a^*$ of Ceramco3 were reduced and $b^*$ of Ceramco3 was increased. Color difference (${\Delta}E^*ab$) was increased in all three products as the mixing ratio got higher. Increased mixing ratios resulted in decreased translucency parameter (TP) values for IPS e.max Ceram but increased TP values for Vintage Halo and Ceramco3. CONCLUSION. In this limited study, CIE $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ were influenced by the mixing ratio of the A3 powders and porcelain powder mixtures represented a various color and translucency.

Numerical Analysis of River Bed Change Due to Reservoir Failure Using CCHE1D Model (CCHE1D 모형을 이용한 저수지 붕괴에 따른 하상변동 해석)

  • This study presents the analysis of flood and bed deformation caused by reservoir failure. The CCHE1D is used to simulate 1D non-uniform, non-equilibrium sediment transport and bed deformation. The CCHE1D deals with the adaptation length for non-equilibrium sediment, classified sediment particle for non-uniform sediment and mixing layer for the exchange with the sediment moving with the flow. The model is applied to Ha!Ha! river basin where was experienced reservoir failure in 1996 to analyze non-uniform and non-equilibrium sediment transport. The calculations are compared with morphological bed changes of pre- and post-flood. In addition, model sensitivity to main parameters involving adaptation length ($L_{s,b}$), non-equilibrium coefficient (${\alpha}_s$), mixing layer thickness (${\delta}_m$) and porosity (p') is analyzed. The results indicates that thalweg change is the most sensitive to non-equilibrium coefficient (${\alpha}_s$) among those parameters in the study area.

Tribological Properties of Hot Pressed $SiC/Si_3N_4$ Composites (가압소결 $SiC/Si_3N_4$ 복합체의 마찰마모특성)

  • SiC-Si3N4 composites were prepared by mixing $\alpha$-Si3N4 powder to $\alpha$-SiC powder in the range of 10 to 30 vol% with 10vol% interval. 6wg% Al2O3 and 6wt% Y2O3 were respectively added as sintering aids. Hot pressing was performed at 1,80$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour with 25 MPa pressure. In the case of adding 20vol% of $\alpha$-Si3N4 powder the relative density to theoretical value and the flexural strength were 99.1% and 34,420 MPa respectively and the worn amount was 2.09$\times$10-3 mm2 which were the highest values in the all range of he composition. Although the composite containig 10 vol% of $\alpha$-Si3N4 powder showed the highest fracture toughness(KIC) of 4.65MN/m3/2 the reduction of the wear resistance in this composite is likely to be affected by the homogeneity and the uniformity of the grain coalescence and growth during the sintering process.

  • The 2-O-$\alpha$-D-glucopyranosyl L-ascorbic acid (AA-2G) which was enzymatically glucosylated with the cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) [EC 2.4.1.19] from Bacillus sp. JK-43 has been reported previously. The presnet experiments examined the optimal conditons for the productio of AA-2G from AA and soluble starch, and characterized the properties of the CGTase from Bacillus sp. JK-43. The reaction mixture for the maximal production of AA-2G was followings; 12% total substrate concentration, 1,400 usits/mL of CGTase and a mixing ratio of 2 : 3(g or AA : g of soluble starch). Under this condition, 1.76mM of AA-2G, which corresponded to 2.53% yield based on AA, was produced after incubation for 24hrs at 45$^{\circ}C$ (pH 5.5). The optimum pH and temperature for the CGTase activity were 6.0 and 45$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The enzyme was stable at pH 5.5 to 9.5, and at temperature up to 5$0^{\circ}C$. The thermostability of the enzyme could be enhanced up to 6$0^{\circ}C$ by the addition of 30mM CaCl2.

Supramolecular Hydrogels Instantaneously Formed by Inclusion Complexation between Amphiphilic Oligomers and $\alpha$-Cyclodextrins

  • Supramolecular hydrogels were instantaneously fabricated by mixing aqueous solutions of $\alpha$-cyclodextrins ($\alpha$-CDs) and amphiphilic methoxy (polyethylene glycol) (MPEG)-$\varepsilon$-caprolactone (CL) oligomer, which was synthesized via the ring-opening polymerization of the CL monomer using low-molecular-weight MPEG ($M_n$ of MPEG=2,000 g/mol) as an initiator. The supramolecular structure of the hydrogels was revealed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. Rheological studies of the hydrogels revealed an elastic character when the number of CL units in the oligomer was more than 2, and the obtained hydrogels showed high storage modulus but relatively low shearing viscosity due to the low-molecular-weight character of the oligomer, which was more preferable for use as an injectable delivery system. The physical properties of the hydrogels could be modulated by controlling the chain morphology and concentration of the oligomers, as well as the feed molar ratio of the oligomer to $\alpha$-CD. The components of the supramolecular hydrogels are biocompatible and can readily be eliminated from the body. These features render the supramolecular hydro gels suitable as drug delivery systems and tissue engineering scaffolds.

Synergistic Effect of Glucoamylase and $\alpha$-Amylase in Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Raw Corn Starch in an Agitated Bead Reaction System (분쇄마찰매체 효소반응계에서 생전분 효소당화를 위한 Glucoamylase와 Alpha-Amylase의 보완작용)

  • The synergistic effect of glucoamylase and a -amylase on the hydrolysis of raw corn starch in an agitated bead reaction system was studied by investigating the changes of sugar profiles, the granular structure, particle size distribution, and X-ray diffraction pattern of residual raw corn starch. The enzymatic hydrolysis of raw corn starch was greatly enhanced by synergistic effect of glucoamylase and $\alpha$ -amylase. Even though the sugar profiles were mainly determined by the mixing ratio of glucoamylase and $\alpha$-amylase; raw starch was mainly converted to glucose directly without accumulation of any significant amount of oligosaccharides. The cavity formation and fragmentation phenomena of raw corn starch granule subjected to enzyme reaction were analyzed by means of SEM and the particle size distribution. The X-ray diffraction pattern of raw starch was not changed at the initial stage of reaction but slightly changed at the late stage of hydrolysis, which may be caused by the preferential degradation of amorphous region by enzymatic reaction, not by the destruction of microcrystalline structure of raw corn starch.

Surface properties of Nb oxide thin films prepared by rf sputtering

  • Niobium oxide thin films were synthesized by reactive rf magnetron sputtering. The target was metallic niobium with 2 inch in diameter and the substrate was n-type Si wafer. To control the surface properties of the films, Nb oxide thin films were obtained at various mixing ratios of argon and oxygen gases. Nb oxide thin films were analyzed with alpha step, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The result of alpha step showed that the thickness of Nb oxide thin films were decreased with increasing the oxygen gas ratios. SEM images showed that the granular morphology was formed at 0% of oxygen gas ratio and then disappeared at 20 and 75% of oxygen gas ratio. The amorphous Nb oxide was observed by XRD at all films. The oxidation state of Nb and O were studied with high resolution Ni 2p and O 1s XPS spectra. And the change in the chemical environment of Nb oxide thin films was investigated by XPS with Ar+ sputtering.

Properties of $SiC/MoSi_2$ Composites Prepared by Reaction Sintering Method (반응소결에 의한 $SiC/MoSi_2$ 복합체의 특성)

  • The SiC/MoSi2 composite material was prepared by infiltration with the mixture of metal Si and MoSi2 into the preform of $\alpha$-SiC and graphite under the vacuum atmosphere of 10-1 torr. The mechanical properties, phases and microstructural characteristics have been investigated by employing an universal testing machine, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. With the increase of MoSi2/Si mixing content, the quantity of the residual silicon phase was decreased and the hardness and fracture toughness of composite materials were increased. Also, as the infiltration temperature increased, a lot of fine-grained $\beta$-SiC phases, which were produced from the reaction of graphite and liquid silicon melt, were transformed to $\alpha$-SiC phases.

Preparation and Evaluation of Solid Composites Containing Choline Alphoscerate

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of the mixtures of choline alphoscerate (alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine, alpha-GPC), in the liquid form, and sucrose ester, which formed a solid composite. The choline alphoscerate solid composites were prepared using different ratios of sucrose ester, and different preparation methods, such as air drying and rotary evaporation, were compared for their preparation efficacy. We examined the characteristics of the solid composites by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), angle of repose, and moisture content. The ideal mixing ratio of choline alphoscerate and sucrose ester was determined as 1:3 and air drying was found to be more suitable for the preparation of solid composites than rotary evaporation. SEM measurements of the degree of dispersion and the size of particles indicated that a high-temperature air method was more suitable. These results demonstrated the successful preparation of choline alphoscerate solid composites that have potential for industrial use.

  • Effect of the ratio of mixing length to the pressure scale-height ${\alpha}$=l/HP on the effective temperature has been investigated under some simplifying assumptions. The result is compared with that of the existing model calculations. The role of convection zone in the stellar evolution is briefly summarized.
