  • Background: Percutaneous cardiopulmonary support (PCPS) provides passive support of gas exchange and perfusion, allowing the use of other methods of care for organ recovery, and saves lives of patients with severe cardiopulmonary failure in a wide variety of clinical settings with a minimal risk of bleeding and need for chest re~ exploration. We summarized a single center's experiences with PCPS in patients with cardiogenic shock or cardiac arrest due to the ischemic heart disease. Material and Method: Among the 20 consecutive patients with cardiogenic shock or cardiac arrest from May 1999 to June 2005, Biopump (Medtronic, Inc, Minneapolis, MN) was used in 7 patients and the self-priming, heparin-coated circuit of EBS (Terumo, Japan) was applied to remaining 13 patients. Most of cannulations were performed percutaneously via femoral arteries and veins. The long venous cannulas of DLP (Medtronic inc. Minneapolis, MN) or the RMI (Edwards's lifescience LLC, Irvine, CA) were used with the arterial cannulae from 17 Fr to 21 Fr and the venous cannula from 21 Fr to 28 Fr. Result: The 20 consecutive patients who were severely compromised and received PCPS for the purpose of resuscitation were comprised of 13 cardiac arrests and 7 cardiogenic shocks in which by-pass surgery was performed in 11 patients and 9 ongoing PCls under the cardiopulmonary support. The mean support time on the PCPS was 38$\pm$42 hours. Of the 20 patients implanted with PCPS, 11 patients ($55\%$) have had the PCPS removed successfully; overall, 8 of these patients ($40\%$) were discharged from the hospital in an average surviving time for 27$\pm$17 days after removing the PCPS and survived well with 31$\pm$30 months of follow-up after the procedure. Conclusion: The use of PCPS appears to provide the hemodynamic restoration, allowing the survival of patients in cardiac arrest or cardiogenic shock who would otherwise not survive, and patients receiving PCPS had a relatively long-term survival.

  • In present study, we geochemically investigated the fresh coal ashes and the saline ash pond of an electric power plant in Korea, which burns imported bituminous coals. The goals are to see the chemical changes of the ash pond by reaction with coal ashes and to investigate the relative leachability of elements from the ashes by reaction with saline waters. For this study, one fresh fly ash, one fresh bottom ash, and 7 water samples were collected. All the ash samples and 2 water samples were analyzed for 55 elements. The results indicated that the fly ashes are enriched with chalcophilic elements such as Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, Se, Cd, Sb, Au, Pb, and B relative to other elements. On the other hand, concentrations of As, Ba, Co, Ga, Li, Mn, Mo, Sb, U, V, W, and Zr are much higher in the ash pond than those dissolved in the seawater. Ag, Bi, Li, Mo, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sn, Sr, and W show high ratios of elemental concentrations in pond water to those in the fly ash. Our results imply that the leaching of trace elements is regulated by geochemical controls such as solubility and adsorption even though the trace elements are relatively enriched on the ash surfaces after the coal combustion due to their volatilities.

  • The objectives of this study are to determine optimal operation condition of chemical coagulation with ferric chloride($FeCl_3$) and fenton reagent oxidation for effluents of a biological denitrification treatment and an existing lagoon treatment of landfill leachate, and to investigate the effect of alkalinity on fenton oxidation. In jar-tester, optimum dosage of ferric chloride for removal of COD was $1,500mgFe^{3+}/L$, removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$ and $COD_{Mn}$ under this condition were about 55% and 64%, respectively. After chemical precipitation($1,500mgFe^{3+}/L$) of biological treatment effluent, optimum $Fe^{2+}/H_2O_2$ ratio of fenton oxidation was 1.5, the maximum removal efficiency of COD was about 80%, and optimum dosages of ferrous sulfate and hydrogen peroxide were $600mgFe^{2+}/L$ and $400mgH_2O_2/L$, respectively. The removal efficiency of COD was decreased as alkalinity was increased.

  • Xylanase is a class of enzymes that hydrolyze the linear polysaccharide ${\beta}$-1,4-xylan into xylose. This enzyme is applied in the process of paper making and may be used for the process of biofuel production in the future. The Paenibacillus donghaensis JH8, isolated from Donghae deepsea sediment and reported as a novel bacterium, was known to degrade xylan and its xylanase was characterized in this study. The enzyme was maximally induced in the presence of 0.1% xylan. The production of xylanase was started at early logarithmic phase and reached about 55 miliunit at stationary phase of growth. The optimal temperature and pH of extracellular xylanase were found to be $40^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.0, respectively. The activity of xylanase was inhibited by the presence of $Ca^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Al^{3+}$ or EDTA, and activated by $K^+$, $Ag^+$ or DTT. This xylanase was stable at $40^{\circ}C$ for 120 min, but lost almost their activity in 30 min at $60^{\circ}C$. Zymography analysis of concentrated culture supernatant revealed one major band at 42 kDa and two faint bands at 68 and 120 kDa.

  • As the severity of environmental pollution increases, the foodstuffs are contaminated more the ever. There are 40 kinds of heavy metals that we are able to consume through the heavy metal contaminated-foodstuffs. Arsenic, lead, cadmium, and chromium out or them have been know to be a potential cause for a alzheimers disease, kidney diseases, and cancer. However, research data on the daily intakes of such heavy metals are limited. This study was performed to evaluate the daily intakes of nutrients and the dietary heavy metals of the college women living in Choongchung-NamDo Area, where had been reported to have high contents of heavy metals for the seafoods. We also investigated the blood levels of the heavy metals. The mean age, height, weight, BMI and percent ideal body weight(PIBW) of the subjects were 20$\pm$1.0yr, 158.4$\pm$0.7cm, 55.1$\pm$1.4kg, 22.4$\pm$.04, and 103.3$\pm$2.5 %, resp-ectivly. The mean of daily energy intake was 1,717.03$\pm$55.99kacl/day(86% of RDA for women). The ratio to energy from carbohydrate, fat and protein was 60: 24: 16. Daily intakes of Vit A, Vit B$_2$, CA, and Fe were under the RDA for those nutrients. The mean adequate ratio of the subjects was 0.92 . The daily intakes of heavy metal, such as As, Pb, Co, Cr and Mn , were 1.80$\pm$0.27mg, 75.21$\pm$4.12$\mu\textrm{g}$, 21.12$\pm$12.34$\mu\textrm{g}$, 60.07$\pm$6.24$\mu\textrm{g}$ and 6.23 $\pm$0.12mg respectively. the blood levels of As, Pb, Co, Cr and Mn were 16.10$\pm$2.10$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, 4.32$\pm$0.58$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, 0.02$\pm$0.01$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, 4.23$\pm$0.41$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, and 4.40$\pm$0.21$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, respectively. In conclusion, daily intake of heavy metals for the college women living in Choongchung-NamDo area was lower than that of WHOs re-commendation, however, the blood levels of each heavy metals were higher than those of Japanese, american, and italian, There were no correlations between the dietary intakes and blood levels of each heavy metals. • Time course of alkaline inorganic PPase activity with different parts of mung-bean sprout and some properties of partially purified enzyme from mung-bean leaves were investigated. The enzyme activity in leaf, root and cotyledon showed a tendency to increase at an early stage and then decrease gradually as germination continued. However, the crude homogenate of epicotyl showed the continuous decline of the enzyme activity but that of hypocotyl showed the continuous increase. In particular, the enzyme activity of leaf fraction was about 2-4 times as high as those of other fractions. The specific activity of the leaf enzyme was increased 86-fold, with a 23.9% yield, upon purification procedures. The purified enzyme from leaves had the Rm value of 0.35 and was not homogenous when judged by disc gel electrophoresis. Using tetrasodium pyrophosphate as a substrate, the apparent Km value for the partially purified enzyme was 0.89 mM. The enzyme was highly specific for $Mg^{2+}$ $CU^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}$ was also showed the activating effect of 56% and 55% with $Mg^{2+}$, respectively. However, $Ca^{2+}$), $Zn^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$ and $Ni^{2+}$ acted as inhibitors for the enzyme. The pH optimum for the enzyme shifted from 9.0 to 8.0 as the concentration of $Mg^{2+}$ was increased. The enzyme from mun-bean leaf was the most active at $50^{\circ}C$ and considerably stable on heat.

  • This study was performed to investigate the removal characteristics and mechanism of heavy metals using pellet-type ceramics(ZS ceramics), in which natural zeolite was mixed and calcined with converter slag. The optimal calcination temperature range was measured to be $600{\sim}800^{\circ}C$. The calcination time had little effect on the removal of heavy metal in acid wastewater. The adequate dose of ceramics was shown to be 2~5% for removal of heavy metals in acid wastewater. The maximum removal capacity of ZS ceramics for heavy metals were observed to be Al 84.7 mg/g, Cd 37.3 mg/g, Cr 81.7 mg/g, Cu 55.6 mg/g, Fe 57.2 mg/g, Mn 32.1 mg/g, Ni 38.0 mg/g, Pb 71.6 mg/g, Zn 46.3 mg/g. The pH played a pivotal role in the removal of heavy metals by ZS ceramics. The analysis results of mechanism exhibited that the ZS ceramics could act as a multi-functional ceramics for removal of heavy metals in acid wastewater by adsorption, ion-exchange, or precipitation.
