In this study, antibacterial glasses were developed by the addition of CaO in ZnO-Na2O-B2O3-SiO2 glass system. The effect of the addition of CaO on the thermal properties, dissolution properties, surface zeta potential and antibacterial activity were analyzed. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) analysis was performed to analyze the thermophysical properties of 30ZnO-xCaO-20Na2O-30B2O3-(20-x)SiO2 (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 mol%). It was confirmed that the glass transition temperature decreased as the CaO content increased. The amount of released Zn2+ ions and surface zeta potential of glass samples increased with increasing CaO concentration. For these reasons, the antibacterial activity was dramatically improved. By the addition of CaO, we could successfully develop an antibacterial glass with 99.9 % antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

A plate-type inorganic pigment complex was manufactured in a manner that treats the surface of the complex by adjusting zeta potential between talc, an inorganic pigment used as a material for color cosmetics, and hydrophobic silica. Talc, which is usually used in the prescription of color cosmetics, is a plate-type, white-colored inorganic substance with good application and spreadability to skin. Furthermore, it features excellent dispersibility and extensibility as well as outstanding heat tolerance, light stability, and chemical resistance. In general, silica contributes to durable makeup and stabilized formulation. This paper covers a process of manufacturing an inorganic pigment complex, where hydrophobic silica was applied to the surface of talc by using differences in zeta potential after the surface charges of talc and hydrophobic silica had been adjusted with cationic and anionic surfactants, respectively. The resulting inorganic pigment complex was composed of talc whose surface is coated hydrophobic silica to the thickness of $1{\mu}m$ or less, which developed an effective hydrophobic property. Zeta potential was measured to analyze the surface charge of an inorganic pigment, and FT-IR, used to check the functional group of a surfactant, was applied to treat the surface of the pigment. The surface of the inorganic pigment complex was observed employing SEM, EDS, and FIB, while its structure was confirmed with XRD and FT-IR.
The sedimentation characteristics of ceramic fiber were analyzed when viscosity of the slurry for ceramic paper formation was varied and zeta potential change and degree of dispersion with pH were studied as well. The proper viscosity of the slurry for dispersion of fibers was between 28 and 31 cps. Zeta potential of the slurry was sensitively changed with pH adjustment and showed maximum value of -35~-36 mV at ph 7.5~9.5, which indicated better dispersion of ceramic fiber as zeta potential of the slurry was increased. The sedimentation rate of ceramic fiber in a slurry was reported minimum at the maximum zeta potential. Water content of the casted paper should be lower than 83% after vacuum dehydration for retention of binder and lower than 62% after press rolling for wet paper handling. The obtained ceramic paper had tensile strength and basis weight, $102 kgf/cm^2$ and $98 g/m^2$, respectively.

Simulated liquid waste containing 50 ppm cobalt ion was treated by precipitate flotation using the surfactant of sodium lauryl sulfate. The effects of initial cobalt ion concentration, pH, surfactant concentration, removal time, gas flow rate and foreign ions were estimated on removal efficiency. 35% $H_2O_2$ was added for pre-treatment stage before precipitate flotation. As the result of pre-treatment, optimum removal pH and the pH of treated water being discharged were lowed and optimum removal pH range was broadened. For the result of this experiment, 99.8% removal efficiency was obtained at the condition of 50ppm of initial cobalt ion concentration, pH 9.5, 70 mL/min of gas flow rate, and 30 min of removal time. Attraction between precipitate and surfactant was supposed to be influenced by solubility and chemical affinity among species in sloution as well as zeta potential. The influence of foreign ions such as, $NO_3{^-}$, ${SO_4}^{-2}$, $Na^+$, $Ca^{+2}$ on the removal efficiency was also observed. Removal efficiency by precipitate flotation containing 0.1 M of ${SO_4}^{-2}$ ion decreased to 90% due to the decrease of zeta potential and interruption of precipitation.
Overall objective of this study was to evaluate the electrochemical characteristics of fine soils during the electrokinetic(EK) remediation. Zeta potential of kaolinite as a function of solution pH and surfactant concentration was investigated to make a relationship with electroosmotic flow direction and rate. During the EK experiments, pH of pore solution, electroosmotic permeability($k_e$), electric conductivity($\delta_e$) and voltage distribution was measured, respectively, The point of zero charge(PZC) of kaolinite was estimated to be about 4.2 and the zeta potential of kaolinite above PZC was more negative as solution pH increased. Sorption of surfactants on the kaolinite altered the zeta potential of kaolinite. resulting from the variation of electrochemical characteristics of kaolinite surface. hs the EK experiment progressed, low pH was predominant over most of the kaolinite specimen and thus resulted in very low mass and charge flow. The $k_e$ and $\delta_e$ was also affected by the variation of voltage drop across the EK column with time. Results from this study implied that zeta potential of kaolinite affected by the pH variation of pore solution and voltage distribution in soil column played important role in the determination of mass and charge flow during EK process. It was also suggested that pH adjustment or addition of suitable sorbates could alter the electrochemical characteristics of soil surface and thus maintain high mass and charge flow rate with time.
A zwitterionic surfactant shows not only detergency but also mildness effect since it shows characteristics of a nonionic or an anionic surfactant above an isoelectric point, while showing characteristics of a cationic surfactant below an isoelectric point. Therefore, a zwitterionic surfactant can serve as a dual function surfactant by a single molecule through the interconversion of cleaning and softening effects depending on pH variations of the aqueous solution. In this study, physical properties of betaine surfactant such as CMC, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle and viscosity were measured and phase behavior study was performed. Also dual function characteristics of betaine zwitterionic surfactant were investigated by measuring an isoelectric point using QCM(quartz crystal microbalance) and zeta potential measurement. The CMC of betaine surfactant was near $10^{-4}mol/L$ and the surface tension at CMC was about 32 mN/m. The interfacial tension between 1 wt% aqueous solution and n-decane measured by spinning drop tensiometer at pH 2~10 resulted in an increase in interfacial tension until pH 5 and a decrease with pH after 5 and equilibration time showed the similar trend with an increase in pH. The isoelectric point of betaine surfactant measured by QCM experiment was found to exist between 3.0 and 3.3, which is the same as the result determined by zeta potential measurement.
In this study, physical properties of synthesized DE7-OSA82-AO and DEP52-OSA82-AOQ82 zwitterionic surfactants were measured such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle and viscosity. Phase behavior study was also performed. The dual function characteristics of a zwitterionic surfactant were investigated by determining an isoelectric point, which was attained using zeta potential measurements and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) experiments. The isoelectric point of DE7-OSA82-AO surfactant determined by the zeta potential measurement and QCM experiment was about 7.2 and 7.4, respectively. On the other hand, the isoelectric point of DEP52-OSA82-AOQ82 surfactant determined by the zeta potential measurement and QCM experiment was about 10.9 and 11.0, respectively. The frictional property measured using an automated mildness tester showed that DE7-OSA82-AO surfactant can provide a good softening effect at an acidic or neutral condition. On the other hand, DEP52-OSA82-AOQ82 was found to provide a good softening effect to a fabric surface at a pH below its isoelectric point of 11.
Sericite was ground with or without additives (LiNO3 or TiO2) using a planetary mill. The resultant ground products included the average particle size of 2-3 ㎛ (sericite only or sericite+LiNO3) and 0.5-0.6 ㎛ (sericite+TiO2) were obtained within 10 minutes of grinding time. respectively. In the grinding of the sericite without any addictive, the particle size initially decreased, but, as grinding time elapsed thereafter, agglomerates were formed and D50 increased over 10 ㎛. In contrast, when the additive was added, the particle size decreased as the grinding time elapsed and any aggregation was relatively not noticeable, compared with the grinding of the sericite only. As a result of measuring the zeta potential for the raw or the ground samples, variation of the zeta potential values according to pH at the early stage of the grinding with the addictives was gentler than that at the final stage of grinding, which showed the relatively similar trend to the pH-zeta potential correlation in grinding of raw sericite. In addition, as a result of the disintegration experiment through ultrasonic excitation, D50 decreased rapidly only until the disintegration time of about 50 minutes.
This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between theoretical parameters affecting the coagulation process and the real coagulation phenomenon applied to the dye wastewater. Emphasis was placed on the effective removal of the suspend particulates. Parameters studied in this study are pH, coagulant concentration and surface potential. Optimal dosages of coagulants by the measurement of the zeta potential at lower then $25^{\circ}C$ are 5\times$10^P-3}$ M of $FeCl_3 and 1.4\times10^{-6}M of Fe_2(SO_4)_3$. The results were well agreeded with the separate Jar-test results. Emphasis was also placed on the relationship between water quality and the content of SS. It was found that the COD and DOC were reduced to 65% and 85%, respectively. The turbidity at the above condition was reduced from 300 NTU to 0~1 NTU. Efforts were made to clarify the behavior of the suspend solid as affecting the water quality. 12,000~13,000 particles/10mL in $1~50\mu$m size range particulates in the raw wastewater were reduced to 300 particle/10mL in the same range after treatment. This research has proposed the methodology to find out the optimal condition of coagulation for small scale wastewater treatment plant or chemical coagulation process.

In this study, a nanoemulsion formulation for encapsulating turmeric extract was developed and its physicochemical characteristics including particle diameter, zeta potential, polydispersity index, and stability were determined. The turmeric nanoemulsion (TE-NE) droplets exhibited small diameter (165 nm), low PDI (0.17), and high zeta potential (-31.80 mV), all desirable characteristics in nanoemulsions, as well as stability in a wide range of pH. The TE-NE was spray-dried as a means to allow its incorporation into food products and reduce potential transport and storage costs. The resulting powder exhibited a pale yellowish appearance and had a curcuminoids content of 0.39 mg/g. The spray-dried TE-NE powder was incorporated into minced pork to make canned ham, and the sensory characteristics of the ham were evaluated. As a result, the canned ham incorporating TE-NE powder received the same overall acceptability score as the control, and only exhibited slight yellowing. By contrast, ham incorporating turmeric extract exhibited substantial yellowing, and its appearance was considered less acceptable by the panelists. Therefore, the TE-NE formulation could be incorporated into canned ham and other meat products without substantially affecting their sensory qualities.
