The Studies on Treatment of Liver Disease Using Lasers and Acupuncture in Dogs (고양이에서 Lasers 및 침술을 이용한 신장질환 치료에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of acupuncture after the induction of acute kidney disease in dogs by ethylene glycol. Twenty four mixed breed, adult cats were used in the experiment. Ethylene glycol was administered orally at 1 ml/kg in 24 cats, and then 6 cats were treated by acupunchuture 6 cats were treated by electroacupuncture, 6 cats were treated by acupuncture and 6 cats were not treated as a control group. Treatment was done once daily far 4 dsys. The acupoint used were Gan-shu and Tai-xi. The effect of acnpuncture was evaluated by clinical symptom, blood chemical values, electrocardiogram (ECG) and histopathologkal findings. After treatement, acupuncture group revealed relatively fast recovery compared with other groups, in clinical symptoms, blood chemical values, ECG waves and histopathological findings. Laserpuncture group revealed secondly fast recovery compared with control group.

Successful Surgical Treatment of Feline Acute Bullous Keratopathy and Corneal Perforation with a Conjunctival Hood Graft

  • We report the successful treatment of feline acute bullous keratopathy (FABK) and corneal perforation with a conjunctival hood graft. Two cats with FABK and corneal perforation had severe corneal edema with large central bullae. Their corneas were thinned and perforated. Conjunctival hood grafts were performed. All corneas recovered after 3-4 weeks. The grafts were then removed from the cornea using superficial keratectomy and no ocular irritation was observed. One month later, the corneas had recovered, although there was very mild fibrosis. The cats had normal vision without any corneal problems at this time. Conjunctival hood graft was thus useful for the treatment of severe FABK and allowed the cats to maintain vision.

  • Polyphenoloxidase activity (PPO) in the leaves of Erechitites hieracifolia was estimated by Warburg's manometric method. The emzyme was most reactive toward chlorogenic acid followed by caffeic acid. Diethyldithiocarbamate and potassium cyanide were shown powerful inhibition rate to the polyphenoloxidase from the leaves of Erechitites hieracifolia. We confirmed antioxidant activity of the leaves of Erechitites hieracifolia by DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging method. Electrophorectic isoenzyme banding patterns of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) were observed by native PAGE. The correlation of PPO and antioxidant enzymes is not investigated yet. That is need to further study.

  • The potential utility of injection media (sucrose, PEG, and liposome) was demonstrated for direct gene transfer into olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) muscles. Based on the use of sucrose (final cone. 20%), PEG 8,000 (final cone. 10%) or liposome (twice us of DNA injected), the present injection strategy significantly improved the level of transgene expression as well as persistent duration of expression. The increased amounts of expression in DNA injection with sucrose, PEG, and liposome were as high as from 2.1 to 4.9-folds of conventional TE-based DNA injection. The best result was obtained from injections of liposome-encapsulated DNA in which the expression was detectable at least 32 days after injection when compared to only 8-16 days from TE-based injections.

  • This paper presents mechanical design and control of a bio-inspired legged robot. To achieve a fast legged running mechanism, a novel linkage leg structure is designed based on hind legs of domestic cats. The skeletomuscular system and parallel leg movement of a cat are analyzed and applied to determine the link parameters. The hierarchical control architecture is designed according to the biological data to generate and modulate desired gaits. The effectiveness of the leg mechanism design and control is verified experimentally. The legged robot runs at a speed of 46 km/h, which is comparatively higher speed than other existing legged robots.

  • In this paper, we establish some comparison theorems about volumes of tubes in metric spaces with nonpositive curvature. First we compare the Hausdorff measure of tube about a metric ball contained in an (n-1)-dimensional totally geodesic subspace of an n-dimensional locally compact, geodesically complete Hadamard space with Lebesgue measure of its corresponding tube in Euclidean space ${\mathbb{R}}^n$, and then develop the result to the case of an m-dimensional totally geodesic subspace for 1 < m < n with an additional condition. Also, we estimate the Hausdorff measure of the tube about a shortest curve in a metric space of curvature bounded above and below.

  • The effects of oxidative stress on the alterations of different antioxidant enzyme activity on mouse melanoma cells(B16F10) was investigated. Oxidative stress was induced by the exposeure to hydrogen peroxide(H2O2). B 16F 10 cells were exposed Phellinus linteus Ex. in combination with H2O2 and measured the time course of changes in cell viability and antioxidant enzyme activity. CAT activity peaked at 12 hr. On the contrary, SOD and GPX activity was maximum at 6 hr. The cell viability of Pheltinus linteus extracts in combination with hydrogen peroxide was higher than hydrogen peroxide alone.

  • This study presents a development of DeCatS(Detail Design of High Speed Catenary System) which is a software to design high speed catenary system automatically. The program is developed by Korea Railroad Research Institute with the support of KHSR. A process of developing it and a comparison with LEXCAT, in order to demonstrate a preciseness of that, were performed. In the program, decision of H-beam, cantilever fitting, management of materials, automatic drawing and etc. according to input conditions can be accomplished. In this study, especially the program algorithm for the decision of mast was introduced.

Antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant effects of Samhwangsasimtang aqua-acupuncture (삼황사심탕약침의 지질강하 및 항산화효과)

  • Effects of Samhwangsasimtang aqua-acupuncture at gansoo($B_{18}$) and chungwan($CV_{12}$) on antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant were investigated in rat fed high fat diet. Concentrations of triglyceride, free fatty acids, lipoprotein and glucose in plasma showed a tendency to decrease in the aqua-acupuncture groups. In plasma lipid composition, total cholesterol and LDL- cholesterol showed a tendency to decrease in aqua-acupuncture groups, however the values of HDL-cholesterol showed no significantly different in the treatment groups. Concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS) in plasma and liver showed a low in the aqua-acupuncture groups. The values of glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) and catalase(CAT) activity showed a tendency to increase in aqua-acupuncture groups. However the values of superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity showed no significantly different in the treatment groups.

  • The effects of $Ca^{2+}-antagonist$, cinnarizine, on the antihypertensive effects of propranolol and metoprolol were investigated in normal cat (i. v.) and SHR (p. o.). Cinnarizine increased the antihypertensive effect of propranolol, but not of metoprolol. It inhibited the heart rate decreasing effects of propranolol and metoprolol slightly. It decreased the norepinephrine-induced blood pressure increasing effect and isoproterenol-induced blood pressure decreasing effect when coadministered with metoprolol orally for 4 weeks in SHRs.
