  • We compared the texts of the two types of military books, 『Mubiji』 and 『Yungsalyujeom (戎事類占)』. In this research, it is proved that Lee-Jema transcribed a segment on martial mantic in 『Mubiji (武備志)』 which is a book on military studies and named it 「Jipungjo (知風兆)」 since he had practical interest in military affairs. Lee-Jema had been serving as a military officer when his peculiar thought was beginning to unfold and maintained his interest in military affairs until his latter years. It is necessary to take a military studies based approach to comprehend Lee-Jema's thought since military affairs had great influence on his life.

  • Objective The purpose of this study was to understand the conclusion of 「Gwangjeseol」 in 『Dongeuisusebowon』 in a more accurate sense. Method We examined the basic viewpoint of Lee je-ma in 「Seongmyeonglon」 in 『Dongeuisusebowon』. Based on the interpretation of the 「Seongmyeonglon」, the viewpoints described in the pathology theory of 『Dongeuisusebowon』 were examined. In addition to 『Dongeuisusebowon』, we looked for contents related to "TuHyeonJilNeung" and "HoHyeonNagSeon" in Lee je-ma's book 『Gyukchigo』 and 『Dongmuyugo』. Result We have found that the meanings of the words "TuHyeonJilNeung" and "HoHyeonNagSeon" in the last article of 「Gwangjeseol」 are not limited to just the 「Gwangjeseol」, but contain the meaning of a topic that runs through the entire book. According to the 『Gyukchigo』 and 『Dongmuyugo』, the meaning of "TuHyeonJilNeung" is related to the "Sa-Bang-Il-Yog", and the "Sa-Bang-Il-Yog" is the "ilsimjiyog" that prevents the practice of "Ji-Haeng". This concept is the same as the concept of "Ji-Haeng" in 「Seongmyeonglon」, the first unit of 『Dongeuisusebowon』. Conclusion It is considered that Lee je-ma wanted to emphasize the reason and mindset to do "Ji-Haeng" by writing the end of the 「Gwangjeseol」, which is the last part of 『Dongeuisusebowon』.

  • Objective The purpose of this study was to examine the composition, bibliographic characteristics, and contents of the book, Dongeuisasangjinryoeuijeon(東醫四象診療醫典). Method The images of this book published in 1941 at Haenglim publishing company, stored in the National Library of Korea were acquired and used as basic data, and books related to Sasang constitutional medicine such as Dongeuisasangshinpyun (東醫四象新編), Dongmuyugo(東武遺稿), and Sasanggeumgyebibang(四象金匱秘方) were compared. Result Many of the data were based on the Dongeuisasangshinpyun(東醫四象新編), and were made with reference to Dongmuyugo(東武遺稿) and Sasanggeumgyebibang(四象金匱秘方) partly. This book is thought to be made to be used conveniently for clinicians at the time when data on Sasang Constitutional Medicine was insufficient. In particular, it can be said that the mention of well-established diagnostic method, drugs that cause adverse reactions when a patient of a different constitution takes them and the quatrains of prescriptions using seven Chinese characters in each line are very unique. Conclusion Although most of the books, including Dongeuisasangshinpyun(東醫四象新編), were cited, it is thought that the book was well-organized in order to provide good information to the clinicians practicing Sasang Constitutional Medicine at the time. For the original part of this book, further research should be conducted.

  • 1. Background: This is the first documented study on the four medications for the Mangeum symptomatology (亡陰證) in the Soyangin disease category. The four medications, Hyeongbangsabaek-san (荊防瀉白散), Jeoryeongchajeonja-tang (猪苓車前子湯), Hyeongbangjihwang-tang (荊防地黃湯), and Hwalseokgosam-tang (滑石苦蔘湯), were comparatively analyzed on their compositive principles and respective symptomatologies. 2. Methods: Previous literature, including classical works on earlier Sasang Constitutional Medicine (different editions of Donguisusebowon and Dongmuyugo), were reviewed for relevant material on the Mangeum medications. 3. Results and Conclusions: 1) Hyeongbangsabaek-san (荊防瀉白散) is used in pathologies of early stages of invasion of the internal heat in the lower-most burn-center (locus related to the Kidney system). 2) Jeoryeongchajeonja-tang (猪苓車前子湯) is used when pathogenic dampness-heat invades the lower-most burn-center (locus related to the Kidney system). 3) Hyeongbangjihwang-tang (荊防地黃湯) is used to treat deficient heat involving injury of the lower-most burn-center (locus related to the Kidney system). 4) Hwalseokgosam-tang (滑石苦蔘湯) is used when the lower-most burn-center (locus related to the Kidney system) is in the early stages of exhaustion, expecially accompanied by concomitant dampness-heat. 5) The Mangeum symptomatology (亡陰證) was fully understood only after the completion of the 1901 Sinchuk edition (辛丑本) of Donguisusebowon (東醫壽世保元).

Methods Palmulgunja-tang and other related prescriptions were analyzed in terms of their pathological indications, based on previous literature including "Donguisusebowon Chobongwon (東醫壽世保元 草本卷)", "Donguisusebowon Gabobon (東醫壽世保元 甲午本)", "Donguisusebowon Sinchukbon (東醫壽世保元 辛丑本)" and "Dongmuyugo (東武遺稿)". 3. Results and Conclusions 1) The Palmulgunja-tang most likely originates from Paljin-tang introduced in "Donguisusebowon Chobongwon (東醫壽世保元 草本卷)". Paljin-tang progressively transformed into Seungyangpalmul-tang ("Donguisusebowon Gabobon (東醫壽世保元 甲午本)") and ultimately into Palmulgunja-tang ("Donguisusebowon Sinchukbon (東醫壽世保元 辛丑本)"), a prescription appropriate for usage in the Ulgwang symptomatology (鬱狂證). Also, Seungyangikgi-tang in "Donguisusebowon Sinchukbon (東醫壽世保元 辛丑本)" can be presumed to have been affected by Seungyangpalmul-tang. 2) The variational prescriptions (變方) of Palmulgunja-tang shows increasing Seungyang (升陽) effect in order of Baekhaogunja-tang, Sipjeondaebo-tang, Palmulgunja-tang, and Doksampalmul-tang. 3) Palmulgunja-tang is composed of 8 herbs. Of these, Paeoniae Radix Alba (白芍藥), Glycyrrhizae Radix(甘草), Angelicae gigantis Radix (當歸), and Cnidii Rhizoma (川芎) fortify the Soeumin Spleen Element (脾元). Ginseng Radix (人蔘) and Astragali Radix (黃芪) support the ascension of Yang, whereas Atractlodis Rhizoma White (白朮) and Citrus unshiu (陳皮) encourage the descension of Yin.
