Bioluminescence refers to the production and emission of light in living organisms. This phenomenon arises from luciferase-catalyzed oxidation reaction of luciferin. Bioluminescence is widely observed in marine vertebrates and invertebrates, as well as in some microorganisms and fungi. To date, approximately 80 species of fungi have been reported to be luminous. One such example is Omphalotus japonicus, which is a luminous fungus found in Korea. In this study, we examined the bioluminescence of Omphalotus japonicus mycelia. Light emission was detected at the edges of mycelia grown on solid agar medium. Notably, the intensity of bioluminescence was found to be significantly enhanced following wound induction. The increase in light intensity peaked at 3 h after mechanical damage. We also investigated the effects of extreme temperatures on bioluminescence. Unlike mechanical damage, high and low temperatures repressed the light emission from mycelia. Further investigations are required to reveal the physiological and ecological properties of fungal bioluminescent responses to environmental stresses.

Lentinula edodes is one of the most widely consumed edible mushrooms in Korea. Mating in L. edodes is regulated by a tetrapolar system, and two unlinked genetic loci, A and B, are known to be major determinants of the mating types, as reported in other heterothallic basidiomycetes. The A locus of L. edodes encodes a pair of homeodomain (HD) transcription factors. The highly variable N-termini of these HD transcription factors contribute to the diversity among the A mating types. In this study, we developed a cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) marker to discriminate 11 different A mating type alleles predominant among both cultivated and wild strains. Amplification of the variable region of the A locus followed by digestion with HaeIII and EcoRI restriction enzymes enabled successful discrimination among the 11 A mating type alleles. We also evaluated the applicability of this method in the identification of two A mating types of a dikaryotic strain.

Six strains among the shiitake varieties developed by the National Institute of Forest Science were used to select suitable varieties for sawdust block cultivation method. After 100 days cultivation (60 days in dark and 40 days in light), the weight loss rate of the sawdust block media was 14.4% (12.8% to 15.7%) in average. After 5 to 7 days of fruiting process, 2~36 primordia per medium were formed. The number of primordium formation was in the following order: Manchuhyang> Sansanhyang> Sanbaekhyang> Bambithyang> Sangjanghyang> Taehyanggo. The stipe length was 41~59 mm as followed by Taehyanggo (59 mm), Sanbackhyang (56 mm), Bambithyang (54 mm), Manchuhyang (53 mm), Sanjanghyang (45 mm) and Sansanhyang (41 mm). Among the strains, Sansanhyang had short and thick stipe. The average weight of fruiting bodies was 33~77 g as following order of Taehyanggo (77 g), Bambithyang (51 g), Sansanhyang (50 g), Manchuhyang (41 g), Sanjanghyang (34 g) and Sanbackhyang (33 g). Mushroom production per 2 kg medium was the highest in Sanbackhyang (473 g) followed by Bambithyang (287 g), Manchuhyang (175 g), Sansanhyang (109 g), Sanjanghyang (78 g) and Taehyanggo (60 g). The hardness of the cap was 1,218 to 1,839 g/10 mm. Taehyanggo was the hardest (1,839 g/10 mm) and Bambithyang was the softest (1,218 g/10 mm). In conclusion, in the cultivation condition of sawdust block medium, mushroom production was good in Sanbackhyang and Bambithyang. Sansanhyang showed good in terms of fruiting body shape.
Hosan Park Moon Ho lived in the truly eventful era with keen competition of western powers, invasion of Japan, Confucianism based Movement against Western Power, Volunteer Army Movement against Japanese and etc. Therefore, his learning and idea could not help being related with such difficult environment of his country. Especially, his idea is directly related with such historical environment of his era in terms of his claims as follow: He thought that Christianity destroyed Korean traditional idea and good customs; he claimed that the nation should subdue the betrayers who were at the Japanese side and be revenged on the murder of the empress Myeongseong; and he advocated his own theory for civilization that the nation should be strictly against the imperial invasion of western powers but work for GaeMulSeongMu(開物成務: Achieving Everything through Enlightenment on Meaning of Everything) and HwaMin SeongSok(化民成俗: Forming Beautiful Customs by Educating the People). The problem that should be urgently solved that time was, first of all, to repel the invasion of Japan and western powers and to realize Confucianism based political ideal by scheming political and social stability and saving the people's livelihood from distress through such repelling.

Purpose: This study is an integrated literature review to analyze health problems and social determinants of multicultural adolescents in South Korea. Methods: An integrative review was conducted according to Whittemore & Knafl's guideline. An electronic search that included publications from 2018 to 2020 in the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, RISS, and KISS databases was conducted. Of a total of 67 records that were identified, 13 finally met full inclusion criteria. Text network analysis was also conducted to identify keywords network trends using NetMiner program. Results: The health problems of multicultural adolescents were classified into mental health (depression, anxiety, suicide and acculturative stress) and health risk behaviors (smoking, risky drinking, smartphone dependence and sexual behavior). As social determinants affecting the health of multicultural adolescents, the biological factors such as gender, age, and visible minority, and the psychological factors such as acculturative stress, self-esteem, family support, and ego-resiliency were identified. The sociocultural factors were identified as family economic status, residential area, parental education level, and parents' country of birth. As a result of text network analysis, a total of 41 words were identified. Conclusion: Based on these results, mental health and health risk behaviors should be considered as interventions for health promotion of multicultural adolescents. Our findings suggest that further research should be conducted to broaden the scope of health determinants to account for the effects of the physical environment and health care system.
Here we aimed to classify the major coniferous tree species (Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, and Larix kaempferi) by tree measurement information and machine learning algorithms to establish an efficient forest management plan. We used national forest monitoring information amassed over nine years for the measurement information of trees, and random forest (RF), XGBoost (XGB), and light GBM (LGBM) as machine learning algorithms. We compared and evaluated the accuracy of the algorithm through performance evaluation using the accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score of the algorithm. The RF algorithm had the highest performance evaluation score for all tree species, and highest scores for Pinus densiflora, with an accuracy of about 65%, a precision of about 72%, a recall of about 60%, and an F1 score of about 66%. The classification accuracy for the dominant trees was higher than about 80% in the crown classes, but that of the co-dominant trees, the intermediate trees, and the overtopper trees was evaluated as low. We consider that the results of this study can be used as reference data for decision-making in the selection of thinning trees for forest management.
In the Joseon Dynasty, Confucian literati sacralized their daily lives through ritual practices across the three dimensions of time, place, and humanity. 1) In the dimension of time, they cultivated in their personal lives by accepting and thoroughly practicing the ethical principles of the Elementary Learning (『小學』). These practices of self-cultivation developed into ritualized practices of daily routine from the perspective of neo-Confucianism. 2) In the spatial dimension, local public schools (鄕校), local private academies (書院), and village private schools (書塾) were constructed as the symbolic places for disseminating Confucian norms through intensive seminar activities and collective learning sessions (講會). These places were also used for the pious recitations of selected Confucian proverbs that had been ritualized by Confucian literati. 3) In the dimension of humanity, pious consciousness, reinforced by the ritualized practice of periodic sacrifices or intensive reading, was subconsciously deepened and projected onto dreams individuals reported of their deceased fathers or teachers. According to the Confucian ritualization process, people were seen as being able to sanctify their daily lives by thoroughly internalizing and effectively realizing Confucian values.
This study aimed to investigate the quality characteristics of vegan lentil (Lens culinaris) cookies prepared with different types (butter, rice bran oil, canola oil, and coconut oil) and content (10, 20, and 30 g) of fat and oil. The hardness and pH declined with increased fat and oil content. Spreadability, moisture content and antioxidant activity increased with the fat and oil content. The density declined only when rice bran oil was added. Lightness and yellowness decreased with higher concentrations of vegetable oil. Redness increased as more coconut oil and canola oil were added. Rice bran oil cookies had the highest pH, spreadability, moisture content and antioxidant activity. Butter cookies had the highest lightness value, whereas coconut oil cookies had the highest hardness value. In conclusion, rice bran oil could be a quality substitute for butter when developing vegan cookie products.

ICAO has recommended data-based aviation safety management and decision-making systems through Annex 19(Safety Management) and Doc 9859(Safety Management Manual), stressing that safety can be greatly improved by sharing aviation safety information throughout the industry. Accordingly, advanced aviation countries have built infrastructure to collect and analyze various aviation safety data in an integrated manner, and also tried to spread identified major safety issues across the industry. On the other hand, in Korea, each stakeholder collects, manages and analyzes safety data individually, so there is a limit to use them in integrative manner. In addition, the scope of using and sharing aviation safety information such as analysis result is also focused on safety management at the national government level, which is insufficient to be shared throughout the industry. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to present a plan to share and utilize the domestic aviation safety information. To do this, we compare the current situation between FAA and domestic industry and suggest the improvement plans.

To cope with climate change, studies are being conducted on natural-based solutions (NBS) that reduce carbon by utilizing ecosystems and ecological resources ultimately to achieve carbon neutrality. In this study, carbon storage and economic value evaluations were conducted of the coastal land and sea of Busan using InVEST's Carbon and Coastal Blue Carbon models, which are ecosystem service-based evaluation models. As a result, it is estimated that the amount of carbon storage per unit area is lower than that of the entire Busan land area and that if the currently underway or planned development works are completed, the carbon storage of the coastal land areas would be decreased more. Coastal sea areas have less carbon storage than coastal land, but there is great potential for NBS that utilize ecological resources in the future. If the reclamation of public water affects important habitats with high carbon storage levels, it will reduce these levels, and such negative effects could last for a long time. For the sustainable management of Busan coastal areas, ecosystem service-based management strategies are needed considering carbon storage.
