Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of 12-week Tai Chi exercise on the autonomic nervous system activity and risk factors of metabolic syndrome in patients with metabolic syndrome. Methods: A single group pre-posttest was used. Subjects were 16 participants aged 51~71 years with metabolic syndrome. All of the subjects were met the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III). The Tai Chi exercise consisted of 19 movements from Yang and Sun styles provided twice a week for 3 months. Metabolic syndrome risk factors including waist circumference, blood pressure, glucose, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) were measured. A heart rate variability device was used to measure the activity of autonomic nervous system. Results: After 12-week Tai Chi exercise, systolic pressure, waist circumference, and HDL-cholesterol improved significantly. Tai Chi exercise had no effect on the autonomic nervous system activity. Conclusion: The 12-week Tai Chi exercise was partially effective in managing risk factors of metabolic syndrome. A larger study with longer period to improve the autonomic nervous system activity in patients with metabolic syndrome is needed.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of Dongsasub training for the family caregivers of patients with dementia on their care burden, depression, and self-esteem. Methods: An one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was used. Six family caregivers recruited from a support center for dementia in Seoul and participated in this study. Once a week, the Dongsasub training was provided for 90 minutes during eight weeks. Results: Depression was significantly lower (z=-2.01, p=.044), and self-esteem was significantly higher (z=-2.21, p=.027) than before Dongsasub training. However, care burden was not significantly different between pre and post program (z=-1.58, p=.115). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the Dongsasub training can be used as a nursing intervention in community settings to decrease depression and improve self-esteem for the family caregivers of patients with dementia.

Purpose: This study is a descriptive correlational study to identify the mediating effect of resilience on depression and rehabilitation motivation. Methods: The study was conducted on 206 stroke patients that visited the D University Hospital in B City. Data was collected from July 1 to September 11, 2015. Data were collected for depression, rehabilitation motivation, and resilience. The data were analyzed by the t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 statistical program. Results: 33.7% of subjects showed beyond mild depression. The level of rehabilitation motivation was higher in male stroke patients, and when the level of education and monthly income was higher. Moreover the levels of rehabilitation motivation were significantly higher when stroke patients were participating in exercise continuously. Resilience was found to partially mediate the relationship between depression and rehabilitation motivation. Conclusion: The finding of this study demonstrates that intervention on resilience, in addition to direct intervention on depression, can improve rehabilitation motivation in stroke patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate post-burn itching relevant characteristics in the rehabilitation phase. Methods: Ninety four burn patients who were hospitalized in the rehabilitation phase participated in the study. Self-reported Leuven itch scale-Korean was used to evaluate itching related characteristics. Data were analyzed with descriptive analysis, $x^2$ test, and Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: All subjects except two had the itching. Itching frequency revealed that 68.1% of subjects experienced itching one or more episodes a day or always, and 18.7% had episode durations lasting more than 2 hours per incidence. Mean severity and distress of itching was $5.3{\pm}2.4$ and $5.2{\pm}2.5$, respectively. Itching sensation dimension of tickling was 56.4%. More than 25% of subjects "often" or "always" affected reduced quality of life, loss of concentration, bad mood, and difficulty in falling asleep. Satisfaction with itching treatment was intermediate level. Conclusion: Post-burn itching in the rehabilitation phase was a significant problem despite pruritus treatment. Based on the finding of this study, development of comprehensive and tailored nursing intervention programs for itching could be suggested.

Purpose: This study was conducted to determine factors that influence overactive bladder (OAB) symptom severity in community residents. Methods: The participants of the study were 115 adults who participated in the health lectures for patients with OAB between March 1 and June 30, 2013. The overactive bladder-questionnaire (OAB-q) was used to assess the OAB symptom severity. Results: The mean score of OAB symptom severity was 35.48 out of 100. Participants showed the highest score of urgency among OAB symptoms. The significant predictors were the monthly income, operation history of urogynecology, and body mass index accounting for 23% of the variance of OAB symptom severity. The OAB symptom severity was higher in subjects who had lower monthly income, urogynecology operation history and higher BMI (>$25kg/m^2$). Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate that it should be considered to recommend weight loss as a component of nursing intervention for alleviating OAB symptom severity in overweight OAB patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of hypertension health school program performed in a public health center located in Y-si. Most interesting were the effects on hypertension-related knowledge, self-efficacy, self-care behavior and physiological parameters for hypertensive patients. Methods: Nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was employed. 45 patients with hypertension living in Y-si were assigned into an experimental group (n=23) or a control group (n=22). Experimental group was provided with the 8-weeks hypertension health school program from April 7 to May 20 in 2014. Data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 21.0 using descriptive statistics, $x^2$-test, Fisher's exact test and t-test. Results: The result indicated a significant difference between the experimental group and control group in the scores of hypertension-related knowledge (t=-10.97, p<.001), self-efficacy (t=-4.56, p<.001), self-care behavior (t=-407, p<.001), physiological parameters including systolic blood pressure (t=2.18, p=.032) and diastolic blood pressure (t=2.74, p=.008) and cholesterol levels (t=5.04, p<.001). Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that the hypertension self-help group program has a significant effect on the change of hypertension-related knowledge, self-efficacy and self-care behavior for hypertensive patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Tai Chi exercise program (Sun style 31 forms) on fatigue, anxiety, and sleep patterns in nursing students. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Nursing students who participated in this study were assigned to an experimental group (n=24), and a control group (n=26). The experimental group participated in Tai Chi exercise program for 60 minutes per session, and 3 times a week for 7 weeks. The Tai Chi exercise program consisted of 10 minutes for warm-up, 45 minutes for main session, and 5 minutes for cooling down exercises. The data were collected prior and after the intervention using self-administered questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, $x^2$-test, Fisher's exact probability, t -test, and the general linear model. Results: After the application of the program, the experimental group showed a significant difference in fatigue (F=20.62, p<.001), anxiety (F=16.96, p<.001), and sleep pattern (F=15.70, p<.001) scores. Conclusion: These findings show that the Tai Chi exercise program can be an effective nursing intervention to improve sleep pattern and to reduce fatigue and anxiety in nursing students.
