This article categorizes five residences including Hyangdan(香壇) as 'Hyangdan-style'. The reason for this categorization is that the central structures of these houses, called 'Jeongchim(正寢)" or 'Jungdang(中堂'), are positioned on the North-Shouth axis line. Both ends of the central section are connected with corridor-styled Nangmu in order to secure extra space. The left and right spaces of the 'central section' is designated as spaces for male and female respectively, of which the latter space was particularly closed to the outside. It seems that these residences were built in a period when the 'Sarang[舍廊 斜廊]' space and the 'Daecheong(大廳)' floor (bedroom and hall for males, respectively) were disconnected and considered as different spaces. Among all the 'Hyangdan-style' residences, only Hyangdan has maintained its original structure. While it has some similarities with other Hyangdan-style residences, it differs in a sense that it maintains the early form of architecture when Sarang and Daechung began to merge into Sarangche.
