Zoysiagrass, especially Jungji implicating medium-leaf type zoysiagrass has been widely used in South Korea recently. This study was carried out to classify 36 selected medium-leaf type zoysiagrass accessions compared to 5 basic zoysiagrass species using RAPDs. Morphological characteristics such as leaf width, leaf angle, leaf sheath length, existance of trichomes and stolon color were measured as useful characteristics for identification of species in Zoysia genus. Nineteen RAPD markers were identified using 8 selected random primers. The dissimilarity coefficient of variants ranged from 0 to 0.736. Three zoysiagrass groups were clustered by dissimilarity coefficient analysis. Group 1 consisted of Z. japonica and some US varieties including 'Zenith' and 'Meyer'. Group 2 consisted of Z. sinica, Z. macrostachya and Korean commercial varieties such as 'Anyang', 'Samdeock', and 'Pyeongdong' medium-leaf type grasses. Group 3 was genetically distinct from Group 1 and Group 2, and included Z. matrella and Z. tenuifolia. 'Anyang', 'Samdeock', and 'Pyeongdong' medium-leaf type zoysiagrasses showed very close genetic relationship with Z. sinica and Z. macrostachya.
Turfgrass insect pests were investigated in different turf sod production areas of Korea. Twelve insect pest species of 7 families in 6 orders and one Eriophyidae mite, Aceria zoysiae were collected from turf sod production areas. The zoysiagrass mite was most frequently occurred zoysiagrass sod production areas. Damaged rate by zoysiagrass mite was increased from May to September. Noctuidae (Spodoptera depravata, Agrotis ipsilon and A. segetum) and Pyralidae (Crambus sp.) insect pests in Lepidoptera were attracted in A. ipsilon sex pheromone trap. Eggs and larva of A. ipsilon was the highest occurred August. Zoysiagrass mite and A. ipsilon were main insect pests in turf sod production areas in Korea.

This study was conducted to investigate nutrient content at shoot and root(contained runner in zoysiagrass) in creeping bentgrass, kentucky bluegrass and zoysiagrass before turfgrass dormancy. The shoot ratio of dry weight in creeping bentgrass, kentucky bluegrass and zoysiagrass was 12%, 27% and 25% and root ratio was 88%, 73% and 75%, respectively. The orders of nutrients contained in turf-grass were N>K>Ca>P>Mg>Na in plant tissues. The proportion of nutrients in tissue of creeping bentgrass, kentucky bluegrass and zoysiagrass was 17%, 28% and 34% in shoot and 83%, 72% and 66% in root, respectively. These results showed that nutrients in turf-grass tissue was contained more than 70% in root before grasses dormancy. In turf grass management, all grasses were required to fertilize sufficiently N, $K_2O$, CaO and $P_2O_5$ before winter.

To investigate the physiological responses to winter freezing stress naturally occurring, the level of lipid peroxidation and enzymatic antioxidant responses were compared between zoysiagrass and creeping bentgrass during overwintering. Root mortality of creeping bentgrass was significantly higher than zoysiagrass at January. Root growth of creeping bentgrass was nearly parallel with temperature fluctuation, while zoysiagrass showed little changes in root growth until the end of April. Total nonstructural carbohydrate of zoysiauass was 10% higher than creeping bentgrass. Malondialdehyde(MDA) content in creeping bentgrass was 2-fold higher than that of zoysiagrass. The peroxidase(POD) activity of creeping bentgrass in January was 4.2 times higher, while superoxide(SOD) and catalase(CAT) activities lowered 22% and 67%, respectively, compared to zoysiagrass. These results suggest that zoysiagrass roots much properly operate cold tolerance mechanism and: are less susceptible to cold stress in comparison to creeping bentgrass.
The objective of this study was to identify bacterial antagonists of R. solani AG2-2 (IV) on zoysiagrass and to evaluate their antifungal activity in vitro and in vivo to select an antagonistic isolate. Antagonistic isolates that inhibit large patch disease caused by R. solani AG2-2 (IV) in zoysiagrass were selected from several soils, and their antagonistic activities were investigated in vitro and in vivo. Of 216 bacterial isolates, 67 inhibited several plant pathogenic fungi. The isolates that inhibited stem-segment colonization by R. solani AG2-2 (IV) in zoysiagrass were tested in a growth chamber. Eleven isolates were active as plant growth promoting isolates. Among them, five plant growth promoting isolates and their concentration dependent efficiency on zoysiagrass following inoculation with R. solani AG2-2 (IV) was evaluated. Isolate H33 was one of the potential antagonistic isolates, and it was further tested against various plant pathogens. H33 not only suppressed the disease caused by R. solani AG2-2 (IV) on zoysiagrass but also promoted leaf weight and leaf height of zoysiagrass under growth chamber and greenhouse conditions. The H33 isolate, which belongs to Streptomyces arenae, was identified through physiological, biochemical, and 16S rDNA studies. Further studies will investigate the cultural characterization of S. arenae H33 and isolation and identification of antifungal substance produced by S. arenae H33.
The release of genetically modified organisms ($GMO_{s}$) into the environment has the potential risks regarding the possibility of gene transfer from $GMO_{s}$ to natural organisms and this needs to be evaluated. This study was conducted to monitor the possible horizontal gene transfer from herbicide-resistant zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) to indigenous microorganisms. We have first examined the effect of field-released GM zoysiagrass on the microbial flora in the gut of locust (Locusts mlgratoria). The microbial flora was analyzed through determining the 165 rDHA sequences of microorganisms. The comparison of the microbial flora in the gut of locusts that were captured at the field of GM zoysiagrass and of wild-type revealed that there is no noticeable difference between these two groups. This result indicates that the GM zoysiagrass does not have negative impact on microbial flora in the gut of locust. We then investigated whether the horizontal gene transfer occurred from GM zoysiagrass to microbes in soil, rhizosphere and faecal pellets from locusts by utilizing molecular tools such as Southern hybridization and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). When the total DNAs isolated from microbes in GM zoysiagrass and in wild-type zoysiagrass fields were hybridized with probes for bar or hpt gene, no hybridization signal was detected from both field isolates, while the probes were hybridized with DNA from the positive control. Absence of these genes in the FNAs of soil microorganisms as well as microbes in the gut of locust was further confirmed by PCR. Taken together, our data showed that horizontal gene transfer did not occur in this system. These results further indicate that frequencies of transfer of engineered plant DNA to bacteria are likely to be negligible.
Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon.) is one of the most difficult weedy species to control in turfgrass because it's high tolerant to various environmental and management stresses. This experiment was performed to find the integrated weed management including cultural practices to suppress bermudagrass in Zoysiagrass matrella (L) Merr. As results, two sequential applications of Fluazifop-P-butyl 0.05 ml $m^{-2}$ + Triclopyr-TEA 0.5 ml $m^{-2}$ and Fenoxaprop-P-ethyl 0.1 ml $m^{-2}$ + Triclopyr-TEA 0.5 ml $m^{-2}$ applied on 20 days intervals were evaluated the primary option for bermudagrass suppression and turfgrass injury was acceptable in zoysiagrass. In both treatments, turf injury was observed during 30days after the first application and almost recovered at 40days. While Fenoxaprop-Pethyl 0.1 ml $m^{-2}$ + Triclopyr-TEA 0.5 ml $m^{-22}$ were lightly phytotoxic to zoysiagrass in chlorophyll content test, there was no growth inhibition of zoysiagrass. Verticut practice (4 mm depth) just before herbicides application where zoyisagrass is contaminated with bermudagrass was not helpful to reduce turf injury in this experiment. However, alone verticut management was utilized to decrease about 12-14% bermudagrass population. Thus the application of Fenoxaprop-P-ethyl 0.1 ml $m^{-2}$ + Triclopyr-TEA 0.5 ml $m^{-2}$ which are permitted for turfgrass after zoysiagrass is perfectly recovered from turf injury by verticut practice should be utilized for bermudagrass reduction in zoysiagrass.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of cool-season grass overseeding on the green period, turf quality and density in zoysiagrass lawn. Treatments were perennial ryegrass (PR) overseeding ($60g\;m^{-2}$) on medium-leaf type zoysiagrass, Kentucky bluegrass (KB) overseeding ($20g\;m^{-2}$) on medium-leaf type zoysiagrass and narrow-leaf type zoysiagrass, and no overseeding on medium-leaf type zoysiagrass. Overseeding of KB or PR effectively provided quality improvement of zoysiagrass lawn by extending green-period about one month in spring and two months in fall season. PR overseeding showed quick green cover within 2-3 weeks but decreased the quality of overseeded zoysiagrass lawn during the summer season. Whereas, KB overseeding showed slow green cover taking two to three month after seeding but provided stable and good turf quality throughout the years. KB or PR overseeding significantly increased the turf density of zoysiagrass lawn except the period of summer depression of PR. The ground coverage of cool-season grasses ranged from 30 to 80% with considerable seasonal variation. As a result, KB and PR have their strengths and weaknesses as an overseeding material. Thus, the use of KB and PR as a mixture would provide better overseeding performance in zoysiagrass lawn.

To compare the Carbon metabolic response to high temperature stress in Zoysiagrass [Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr.] and Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds) with respect to heat tolerance, C metabolites were determined from April to September. Sampling was carried out on an established golf course (Muan Country Club, Chonnam, Korea). Shoot mass(g Dry weight per hole cup) of creeping bentgrass started to decrease from June and recovered from August whereas that of zoysiagrass was less varied. Chlorophyll content in creeping bentgrass was significantly higher than zoysiagrass until July, and then decreased by 43% from July to August. Zoysiagrass contained higher soluble sugar than creeping bentgrass throughout experimental period. Soluble sugar in zoysiagrass increased about 58% from April to May, and less varied until August. Soluble sugar in creeping bentgrass slightly increased until July and sharply decreased at August. Starch concentration in zoysiagrass continuously decreased to September after a significant increase from April to May. A remarkable fluctuation in both starch and fluctuation concentration was observed between June and August showing high accumulation for June to July and high degradation for July to August. These results suggest that through creeping bentgrass suffers much severely from high temperature stress than zoysiagrass especially June to August. An active accumulation and degradation in nonstructural carbohydrate in creeping bentgrass during this period might be associated with heat stress.
This research will be utilized as a base line data by researching on growth and the accumulation of inorganic nutrients during the cultivation period of zoysiagrass and also to establish a cultivation strategy of zoysiagrass. It involves the management such as fertilizer and mowing which ultimately led to the difference of growth and accumulation of inorganic nutrients. The accumulation of inorganic nutrients after mowing, the amount of accumulation was small when compared to the amount lost for the shoot, rhizome and root. Difference in the accumulation of inorganic nutrients, but as for K, Ca and Mg accumulation it shows similar aspects to N accumulation. The orders of inorganic nutrients in zoysiagrass were N > K > P > Ca > Mg. The characteristics of inorganic nutrients absorption of such zoysiagrass acts as the foundation of cultivation, and in the aspect of making decisions on the fertilization amount and soil management, it is closely related to the requirement on nutrients. In order to increase the productivity based on the zoysiagrass's growth and density rate improvement, accumulation of inorganic nutrients per growth period needs to be analyzed, and supplying nutrients in an efficient method suitable to the growth period is advisable, so such basic research was necessary.
