  • Fibrous arsenic (As) adsorbent was synthesized by loading zirconium (Zr) on fibrous phosphoric adsorbent that was directly synthesized by radiation-induced graft polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate phosphoric acid on polyethylene-coated polypropylene nonwoven fabric. Zirconium reacted with phosphoric acid grafted in the polyethylene layer. Zirconium density of the resulting adsorbent was 4.1 mmol/g. The breakthrough curve of As(V) adsorption was independent of the flow rate up to $1300\;h^{-1}$ in space velocity. The total capacity of As(V) was 2.0 mmol/g-adsorbent at pH of 2. The adsorbed Zr(IV) could be evaluated by 0.4 M sodium hydroxide solution because negligible Zr(IV) could be found in the eluted solution.

  • In this study, sand cast AZ91E and zirconium grain refined MEZ are representative of two typical groups of magnesium alloys: those containing aluminium and those containing no aluminium but with zirconium as a grain refiner. The corrosion performance of these two alloys was evaluated and compared in 5%wt NaCI solution through measurements of weight loss and polarisation curves and examination of microstructure. Corrosion damage of AZ91E was deeper and more localised than that of MEZ, while MEZ had a lower rate of cathodic hydrogen evolution and a higher rate of anodic dissolution than AZ91E. These differences in behaviour can be related to the differences in microstructure and chemical composition between the two alloys.

  • The effect of alloying elements on the creep resistance of Zr alloys was investigated using thermal creep tests that were performed as a part of advanced fuel cladding development. The creep tests were conducted at 40$0^{\circ}C$ and 150 MPa for 240 hr. A statistical model was derived from the relationship between the steady-state creep rate and the content of individual alloying elements. The creep strengthening effect decreased in the following sequence : Nb, Sn, Mn, Cr, Mo, Fe and Cu. The high creep resistance of Sn and the opposite effect of Fe on zirconium alloys seem to be associated with their lowering and enhancing, respectively, the self-diffusivity of the zirconium matrix.

  • 1. The oxide thickness on the fuelled test rods was within the following range from 7 ${\mu}m$ to 17 ${\mu}m$. In general, the HANA claddings showed better corrosion behavior than the two reference alloys (A-Cladding and Zr-4). 2. The weight gains of corrosion coupons were ranged from 21 to 56 mg/$dm^2$.

  • Different methods of axial and tangential testing and various sample geometries were investigated, and new test geometries were designed to determine the ultimate tensile strength of zirconium cladding tubes. The finite element method was used to model the tensile tests, and the results of the simulations were evaluated. Axial and tangential tensile tests were performed on as-received and machined fuel cladding tube samples of both E110 and E110G Russian zirconium alloys at room temperature to compare their ultimate tensile strengths and the different sample preparation methods.

  • One of the major current challenges to nuclear energy lies in its competitiveness. To stay competitive the industry needs to reduce maintenance and fuel cycle costs, while enhancing safety features. Extended burnup is one of the methods applied to meet these objectives However, there are a number of potential fuel failure causes related to increased burnup, as follows: l) Corrosion of zirconium alloy cladding and the water chemistry parameters that enhance corrosion; 2) Dimensional changes of zirconium alloy components, 3) Stresses that challenge zirconium alloy ductility and the effect of hydrogen (H) pickup and redistribution as it affects ductility, 4) Fuel rod internal pressure, 5) Pellet-cladding interactions (PCI) and 6) pellet-cladding mechanical interactions (PCMI). This paper discusses current and potential failure mechanisms of these failure mechanisms.

  • Three types of zirconium base alloy were evaluated to study how their work hardening behavior is affected by alloy composition. Repeated-tensile tests (5% elongation at each test) were performed at room temperature at a strain rate of $1.7{\times}10^{-3}s^{-1}$ for the alloys, which were initially controlled for their microstructure and texture. After considering the yield strength and work hardening exponent (n) variations, it was found that the work hardening behavior of the zirconium base alloys was affected more by the Nb content than the Sn content. The facture mode during the repeated tensile test was followed by the slip deformation of the zirconium structure from the texture and microstructural analysis.

  • The focus of this study was to examine the phosphorus removal characteristic by zirconium mesoporous structured material synthesized on various conditions. The zirconium sulfate-surfactant mesoporous structured material(ZS) was synthesized by hydro-thermal synthesis. The material has regular hexagonal array of surfactant micelles and sulfate ion ($HSO_4{^-}$). We confirmed that sulfate ion in zirconium mesoporous structured material can be ion-exchanged with phosphate ion ($H_2PO_4{^-}$) in phosphoric acid solution. On the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of ZS, three peaks which shows the important characteristics of hexagonal crystal lattice were observed at (100), (110) and (200). The transmission electron micrograph (TEM) show high crystallization with pore size about $47{\AA}$. The maximum adsorption capacity of ZS was as great as 3.2 mmol-P/g-ZS. From the adsorption isotherm, correlation coefficients were higher for the Langmuir isotherm than the Freundlich isotherm. With the respect of chain length of surfactant, the adsorption capacity for phosphate synthesized with C12 was higher than C16 and C18. The highest amount of adsorbed phosphate on ZS was observed at the surfactant-to-zirconium molar ratio of 0.5 to 1.
