  • Gallium nitride (GaN)-based power switching devices, such as high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMT), provide significant performance improvements in terms of faster switching speed, zero reverse recovery, and lower on-state resistance compared with conventional silicon (Si) metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFET). These benefits of GaN HEMTs further lead to low loss, high switching frequency, and high power density converters. Through simulation and experimentation, this research thoroughly contributes to the understanding of performance characterization including the efficiency, loss distribution, and thermal behavior of a 160-W GaN-based synchronous boost converter under various output voltage, load current, and switching frequency operations, as compared with the state-of-the-art Si technology. Original suggestions on design considerations to optimize the GaN converter performance are also provided.

  • A new configuration of LCD projectors for polarized stereoscopic projection having no light loss in the polarization process is suggested. In the proposed system, two polarizing filters that are employed in the conventional LCD polarized stereoscopic projection system causing additional light loss and image distortion are excluded by taking into account of polarization property of the LCD projector and image processing techniques. From some experimental results by using the Type-1 LCD projectors, light loss of the proposed system occurring in the polarization process is found to be zero.

  • A novel compact and low-loss VHF bandpass filter is presented with enhanced stopband performance using metamaterial zeroth order resonator (ZOR) characteristics. An in-line ZOR filter is initially suggested and changed to have transmission zeros (TZs) due to source-load coupling for effective improvement of the isolation from UHF wireless channels. The proposed filter is smaller than 1/10 of the conventional filters in terms of size and has relatively very low insertion loss (< 1 dB for the electromagnetic (EM) simulation and < 3 dB for the measurement) and return loss (<-20 dB) in the passband due to the approximately 80% size reduction and the higher isolation in the stopband due to the TZs. The circuit and EM simulation are in good agreement with the measurements.

  • This paper is study on a novel high efficiency step up-down converter using loss-less snubber capacitor. The proposed converter is accomplished that the turn-on operation of switches is on zero current switching (ZCS) by DCM. The converter is also applicable to a new quasi-resonant circuit to achieve high efficiency converter. The control switches using in the converter are operated with soft switching, that is, ZVS and ZCS by quasi-resonant method. The control switches are operated without increasing their voltage and current stresses by the soft switching technology. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of the converter is high.

  • In this paper, a zero torque control scheme adopting current sharing function (CSF) used in integrated Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) drive with DC battery charger is proposed. The proposed control scheme is able to achieve the keeping position (KP), zero torque (ZT) and power factor correction (PFC) at the same time with a simple novel current sharing function algorithm. The proposed CSF makes the proper reference for each phase windings of SRM to satisfy the total charging current of the battery with zero torque output to hold still position with power factor correction, and the copper loss minimization during of battery charging is also achieved during this process. Based on these, CSFs can be used without any recalculation of the optimal current at every sampling time. In this proposed integrated battery charger system, the cost effective, volume and weight reduction and power enlargement is realized by function multiplexing of the motor winding and asymmetric SR converter. By using the phase winding as large inductors for charging process, and taking the asymmetric SR converter as an interleaved converter with boost mode operation, the EV can be charged effectively and successfully with minimum integral system. In this integral system, there is a position sliding mode controller used to overcome any uncertainty such as mutual inductance or DC offset current sensor. Power factor correction and voltage adaption are obtained with three-phase buck type converter (or current source rectifier) that is cascaded with conventional SRM, one for wide input and output voltage range. The practicability is validated by the simulation and experimental results by using a laboratory 3-hp SRM setup based on TI TMS320F28335 platform.

  • This paper presents a 5-bit digital step attenuator (DSA) using a commercial 0.18-${\mu}m$ silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process for the wideband phased array antenna. Both low insertion loss and low root mean square (RMS) phase error and amplitude error are achieved employing two attenuation topologies of the switched path attenuator and the switched T-type attenuator. The attenuation coverage of 31 dB with a least significant bit of 1 dB is achieved at DC to 20 GHz. The RMS phase error and amplitude error are less than $2.5^{\circ}$ and less than 0.5 dB, respectively. The measured insertion loss of the reference state is less than 5.5 dB at 10 GHz. The input return loss and output return loss are each less than 12 dB at DC to 20 GHz. The current consumption is nearly zero with a voltage supply of 1.8 V. The chip size is $0.93mm{\times}0.68mm$, including pads. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a low phase error DC-to-20-GHz SOI DSA.

  • This paper is study on a new high efficiency DC-DC converter of discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) with zero voltage switching (ZVS). The converters of high efficiency are generally made that the power loss of the used semiconductor switching devices is minimized. The soft switching operation and the system efficiency of the proposed DCM-ZVS converter are verified by digital simulation and experimental results.

  • Zero-sequence Circulating Current (ZSCC) flows inevitably in parallel converters that share common DC and AC sources. The ZSCC commonly flowing in all converters increases loss and decreases the overall capacity of parallel converters. This paper proposes a simple and effective ZSCC suppression method based on the Space Vector PWM (SVPWM) with the ZSCC controller. The zero-sequence voltage for the proposed SVPWM is calculated on the basis of the grid voltage and not on the phase voltage references. The limit of the linear modulation region of the converters with the proposed method is analyzed and compared with other methods, thereby proving that the limit of the region can be extended with the proposed method. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been verified through the experimental setup comprising four parallel three-level converters. The ZSCC is confirmed to be well suppressed, and the linear modulation region is extended simultaneously with the proposed method. Moreover, the proposed control method does not require any communication between the converters to suppress the ZSCC unlike other conventional methods.
