Hydrothermal Synthesis of Smectite from Zeolite (제올라이트로부터 스멕타이트 수열 합성에 대한 연구)

  • Smectites were synthesized from Na-P type and Na-A type zeolites by the hydrothermal synthetic method, and their physicochemical properties were studied. The optimal synthetic conditions for producing smectite were $290^{\circ}C$, 72 hr and $75{\sim}100kgf/cm^2$ in autogenous pressure. pHs of initial reaction solutions for the synthesis of smectites from Na-P type and Na-A type zeolite s were pH 6 and pH 10, respectively. The synthetic smectite was confirmed as $12{\AA}$-beidellite by a series of analysis such as X-ray diffraction analysis with random and oriented mounts, ethylene glycol treatment, and Greene-Kelly test, and their several physicochemical properties were studied.

Bio-oil Production from Rice Straw by the Catalytic Pyrolysis over Zeolites (제올라이트 촉매 열분해를 이용한 볏짚으로부터 바이오 오일 생산)

  • Rice straw is one of the main renewable energy sources in Korea. Bio-oil is produced from rice straw with a bench-scale equipment mainly with a fluidized bed, a char removal system and zeolite catalyst. It was investigated how the zeolite catalyst affected the production of bio-oil and chemical composition of bio-oil. Compared with non catalytic pyrolysis, the catalytic pyrolysis increased the amount of gas and char but decreased the amount of oil. The water content in bio-oil increased due to deoxygenation. The aromatic compound and heating value was increased when catalytic pyrolysis was applied.u

  • The honeycomb adsorbent was prepared for adsorbing and seadsorbent was prepared by using zeolite sheet, which contained zeolite as component. The steady-state adsorption properties and surface morphologies were analyzed and breakthrough characteristics were ananlyzed by providing 16% carbon dioxide mixed gas. By thermal regeneration, carbon dioxide concentration properties were analyzed, and the adsorptive separation process was compared between thermal swing adsorption and pressure swing adsorption after adsorbent temperature change during heating. The breakthrough results of the honeycomb showed possibility parating carbon dioxide from combustion exhaust gas, which had deep impact on climate change, and the characteristics of the adsorbent were studied. Na-X zeolite was coated on a honeycomb prepared with ceramic sheet or active carbon sheet so that the two honycomb can be used at high temperature. Development of Selective Adsorption Process with Various Pore Size A-type Zeolite on Removal of Acetylenes for Isoprene Purification (제올라이트 A를 이용하여 이소프렌에서 아세틸렌 제거를 위한 선택적 흡착공정 개발)

  • This study focused on the development of effective adsorbent to remove acetylenes for the purification of isoprene. The adsorbents with various pore sizes from $4{\AA}$ to $5{\AA}$ were prepared to investigate the effect of pore size on selective adsorption of acetylene as an impurity. The pore size of zeolite A was adjusted by ion-exchange between Na and Ca ions. The pore size of adsorbents has affected the removal of acetylenes selectively because of the kinetic diameter of acetylenes, such as 2-methyl-1-butyne-3-yen (IPA) and 2-butyne. In a batch adsorption experiment, 5A zeolite with pore size of $5{\AA}$ showed the highest removal capacity of 2-butyne. However, IPA was hardly removed from isoprene by the A-type zeolites. For the adsorption isotherm, modified Langmuir model was well fitted with 2-butyne adsorption. Moreover, the regeneration of adsorbent was carried out to determine optimum method. The adsorbent heated for 12 h at $300^{\circ}C$ was regenerated significantly.

Mineralization Environments and Evaluation of Resources Potentials for the Absorbent-functional Mineral Resources Occurred in the Coal-bearing Formation of the Janggi Group (장기층군의 함탄층에서 산출되는 흡착기능성 광물 자원의 부존 환경 및 자원잠재성 평가)

  • In the coal-bearing formations of the Janggi Group, which are reported as typical clastic sediments, several beds of volcaniclastic rocks are actually found in the Yeongil area. The coal-bearing formations generally exhibit alternating lithologic characteristics of pyroclastic and epiclastic sedimentary facies. Tuff and tuffaceous sandstone rich in pumice fragments are characteristic in the coal-bearing fermations. Diagenetic minerals found in the pyroclastic rocks of the upper and lower coal-bearing formations are montmorillonite, clinoptilolite, opal-CT, and quartz. Several tuffaceous beds correspond to the low-grade ores of zeolites and bentonite, and moreover, these ores mostly occur as thin beds less than 1 m in thickness. Thus, the potential of altered tuffaceous rocks as the resources typical of zeolite and bentonite seems to be low. However, based on mineral composition and CEC determinations, it can be evaluated that these tuffaceous rocks mostly have the promising potential for utilization as the absorbent-functional mineral resources such as acid clays, if these low-grade ores plus adjacent tuffaceous rocks are collectively exploited.

Development of Low-Temperature Storage Method of Sweet Persimmons (단감의 저온저장방법(低溫貯藏方法) 개발(開發)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • This study was conducted to develop the long-tenn storage method to minimize the black spot occurred on the surface of persimmons stored in the films at low temperature. The storage experiments were done with different films and persimmon varieties at $0^{\circ}C$ storage condition for 5 months, and then the physical and chemical characteristics of persimmons were tested monthly. The results were as follows : 1. The film 160 made from zeolites showed highest performance in well storings sweet persimmons for 5 months, compared with other films by eyesight. The initial moisture condensation inside the films seemed to cause the black spots on persimmons, and the effect of the film holes was never significant to prevent the black spots. 2. The sugar content was ranged from $14^{\circ}Brix$ to $15^{\circ}Brix$ regardless of film types and persimmom varieties, and it changed little for storage of 5 months. 3. The decrease rate of persimmom weight in the film 160 and 180 was 0.3% for storage of 5 months, while those in other films reached to 2%. The decrease rate of persimmon weight was least in the film 160 and 180. 4. The hardness of Fuyu least decreased in the films 160 and 380. It was changed from 36 kg/cnf to 8-27 $kg/cm^2$, and that of Charyang was from 31 $kg/cm^2$ to 8-10 $kg/cm^2$ for storage of 5 months. The hardness of Charyang rapidly decreased as storage period increased. 5. The average rate of black spot(defect rate) of Fuyu measured by a computer image processing system was least in the film 160 by 0.5%, but those in other films was ranged from about 5% to 20% for storage of 5 months. The rate of black spot of Charyang was less than that of Fuyu among most of films. 6. The intensity, hue, and saturation in persimmon color changed according to storage period. Especially, the intensity of persimmon colors decreased as storage period increased, but it was least in the film 160. 7. An integrated long-term storage method of sweet persimmons was suggested in the basis of the experiments and literature reviews.

Synthesis of Zeolite from Waste LCD Panel Glass (폐 LCD 패널유리를 이용한 제올라이트의 합성)

  • To find a recycling method for waste liquid crystal display (LCD) panel glasses, we investigated the synthesis process of zeolite with an ion exchange ability by hydrothermal reaction using waste LCD panel glass as a raw material. It was shown that the waste LCD panel glass can be used as a raw material for the production of zeolites having the ion exchange ability. Following conditions for the synthesis of the zeolite with an ion exchange ability were required : the molar ratio of Si to Al components of the waste LCD glass needs to be 2.0 to 2.8, and the temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and reaction time of 12 hours are needed for the hydrothermal reaction. Based on the required conditions previously mentioned, the A type zeolite was synthesized when the molar ratio of the Si to Al component was 2.0, and the P type zeolite was produced when the molar ratio was 2.8. The type A zeolite synthesized by using the waste LCD panel glass showed a good ion exchange ability and heavy metal adsorption ability. Also, an excellent ion exchange capacity was observed as the crystal phase grows stably in a cubic phase.

  • Interest has been increasing worldwide in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (F-T) as a method of producing synthetic liquid fuels from biomass. Hydroisomerization of $C_7-C_{15}$ paraffins applies to production of diesel fuel with high cetane number and improved cold flow properties, such as viscosity, pour point and freezing point. The commercial products such as fuel jet produced from F-T synthesis should have low freezing and pour points. In this study, our major aim is to develop a catalyst for hydroisomerization of synthesis-oil for bio-jet fuel. Effects of zeolites and platinum loading on hydroisomerization of dodecane were investigated as a model reaction in a batch reactor.

Esterification of Methacrylic acid with Ethylene glycol over Heteropolyacid supported on ZSM-5 (ZSM-5 위에 지지된 Heteropolyacid 하에서 Methacrylic acid와 Ethylene glycol의 에스테르화 반응)

  • Esterification of methacrylic acid with ethylene glycol was carried out over Heteropolyacids [HPA: $H_4SiW_{12}O_{40}$ (STA) and $H_3PW_{12}O_{40}$ (PTA)] supported on ZSM-5. For comparison, the same reaction was carried out over unsupported HPA, $H_2SO_4$, $BF_3$ and PTSA. Among the catalysts studied, HPA showed better activity compared to $H_2SO_4$, $BF_3$ and PTSA. Catalytic activity was compared with HPA supported ZSM-5 catalysts. Typical results indicated that 30 wt% PTA supported on ZSM-5 showed nearly the same activity as that of bulk PTA. It was found that the reaction follows first order kinetics with respect to methacrylic acid. The reaction products were identified by $^1H$-NMR and FT-IR.

Manufacture of Synthesis Zeolite using Coal Waste and Study of Analysis for Adsorption Performance (석탄 폐석을 이용한 합성제올라이트 제조 및 흡착성능 분석에 대한 연구)

  • The coal is a useful industrial resource for a long time. However, coal waste is generated by the mining process. Coal wastes are the main cause of pollution in the surrounding environment, and the amount of coal waste is set at hundreds of millions of tons. Significant amounts of these components in the coal waste are $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$, which is also the main source of zeolites useful in various industries. This study is that the synthesis-zeolite was prepared from coal waste and properties and adsorption performance of synthesis-zeolite were compared with commercial zeolite. The synthesis-zeolite is showed similar properties to the commercial zeolite and also showed excellent adsorption performance against atmospheric pollution induced gases ($CO_2$, Toluene, $SO_2$, etc).
