The attempt to enhance the environment of hospitals has increased recently to minimize young patients' anxiety about tests and inspections. This gives more satisfaction with the medical service to kids and young patients. The department of radiology endeavors to improve the conditions of existing radiography rooms to help young patients psychologically feel relaxed. This facilitates the process of inspections. This paper examines the relationship between the environment of radiography rooms and its effect on young patients' state of mind. 94 patients at the age of five were observed before and after the improvement of environment of the hospital. Positive results about the psychological state of the young patients were shown after the change of the environment. The result of this paper gives an idea that the modification of hospital environment has a critical importance to the young patients' psychological state. By this conclusion it may help to improve the quality of the medical service.
Objectives : This research was investigated to evaluate the psychological characteristics and changes of psychological state among dental orthodontic patients. Methods : This cross-sectional questionnaire research was conducted with 230 dental orthodontic patients in Busan from December 23, 2009 to March 6, 2010. The psychological analysis of dental orthodontic treatment patients was performed with Symptom checklist-90-revision(SCL-90-R) considering 5 general characteristics and 2 treatment period related characteristics. Estimated psychological results were changed T-score. Data analysis was performed with descriptive analysis, t-test and ANOVA using SAS(ver 9.1) program. Results : The levels of T-score of SCL-90-R were $43.88{\pm}7.50$ in hostility(HOS), $43.38{\pm}4.64$ in phobic anxiety(PHOB), $43.20{\pm}6.24$ in somatization(SOM), $42.13{\pm}6.71$ in paranoid ideation(PAR), $41.39{\pm}8.16$ in interpersonal sensitive(I-S), $41.01{\pm}7.90$ in obsessive-compulsive(O-C), $40.96{\pm}5.37$ in psychoticism(PSY), $40.96{\pm}5.19$ in anxiety(ANX) and $39.81{\pm}6.80$ in depression(DEP), respectively. The T-score of phobic anxiety in before treatment group was higher than that of treatment groups. The T-score of interpersonal sensitive and paranoid ideation in over 36 months treatment period group were higher than that of other treatment period groups. Conclusions : Phobic anxiety(PHOB), interpersonal sensitive(I-S) and paranoid ideation(PAR) were affected in pre-treatment and long-term treatment dental orthodontic patients. Psychological management methods considering treatment period are needed to improve mental health of dental orthodontic patients.

Obesity is not classed in general psychiatry disease. But, psychoneurotic factor has been known to be a risk factor of obesity. In order to evaluate and understand the psychoneurotic state on obese patient, this study used Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI). Total patients were classified into 3 or 5 clusters. MMPI scores were compared according to education, BMI and Sasang Constitution. Multiple regression analysis were used for psychological factor on obese patients by age, height, weight, education, percent body fat, fat distribution, BMI. Based on this study, it was no significantly difference by education level, BMI, sasang(四象) constitution except L profile according to BMI. These result is different from our general recognition of the psychoneurotic state on obese patient. Therefore, the bigger sample study is needed.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the psychological state of the patients according to skeletal class III malocclusion symptoms. Methods: The subjects were 200 skeletal class III malocclusion patients. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics, clinical manifestation, and T score of Korean version of self-rated Symptom Checklist-90-Revision modified by Jae-hwan Kim. The data were analyzed using SAS version 9.2 and t-test, ANOVA, and ANCOVA were used. Clinical manifestation included subjective recognition and radiological analysis. The subjective recognition of the patients consisted of self-satisfaction of the appearance, phonation, mastication, and temporomandibular joint pain. T score consisted of somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, and psychoticism. Results: The most serious factor in 9 scales was the severe TMJ pain by ANCOVA. Male patients had a higher T score in phobic anxiety, psyochoticism, somatization and depression than female patients. Those having low appearance satisfaction had the problem in interpersonal sensitivity. Obsessive-compulsive symptoms were conspicuous in phonation difficulty and temporomandibular pain. Conclusions: The patients with skeletal class III malocclusion have more satisfaction with appearance, pronunciation, and phonation than those with skeletal class III malocclusion and overjet. Proper dental treatment will improve the communication and quality of life.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to use meta-analysis to evaluate the variables related to depression in patients who have had a stroke. Methods: The materials of this study were based on 16 variables obtained from 26 recent studies over a span of 10 years which were selected from doctoral dissertations, master's thesis and published articles. Results: Related variables were categorized into sixteen variables and six variable groups which included general characteristics of the patients, disease characteristics, psychological state, physical function, basic needs, and social variables. Also, the classification of six defensive and three risk variables group was based on the negative or positive effect of depression. The quality of life (ES=-.79) and acceptance of disability (ES=-.64) were highly correlated with depression in terms of defensive variables. For risk variables, anxiety (ES=.66), stress (ES=.53) showed high correlation effect size among the risk variables. Conclusion: These findings showed that defensive and risk variables were related to depression among stroke patients. Psychological interventions and improvement in physical functions should be effective in decreasing depression among stroke patients.

Objective : We examined the putative association between the psychological symptoms and hypoxemia in hospitalized pneumoconiosis patients. Methods : One hundred and nine hospitalized pneumoconiosis patients were divided into two groups according to their level of hypoxemia (PaO2); hypoxemic group consisted of 47 patients with PaO2 lower than 80 mmHg, and comparative group consisted of 62 patients with higher than 80 mmHg. All of them were interviewed with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), and completed the Symptom Checklist-90items-Revised (SCL-90-R) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The medical data (PaO2, PaCO2, Hb, and Hct), number of hospital days and socio-demographic data as well as scores of the three psychological measurements were compared between the two groups. Results : Hypoxemic patients with lower PaO2 showed higher scores in the HAM-D (p=0.01) and stateanxiety subscale of the STAI (p<0.05). Values of hemoglobin and hematocrit were negatively correlated with levels of trait-anxiety (p<0.05). Thirty patients (27.5%) of total subjects suffered from depression (higher than 18 in the HAM-D), and 46.8% of hypoxemic patients were depressed, whereas 12.9% of comparative group patients were depressed (p=0.01). Conclusion : These results suggest that depression and anxiety might be associated with the hypoxemic mechanism in pneumoconiosis patients.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aromatherapy on pain level, blood pressure, pulse rate, sleep, anxiety and depression of patients with pain. This study used a non equivalent quasi-experimental design. Aromatherapy was the inhalation of blending oils with lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint for 3 weeks. As the estimation for the physiological aspect, the visual analogy scale (VAS) for the pain level, blood pressure and pulse rate were measured. Also, as the estimation for the psychological aspect, Sleep of Snyder-Halpern & Verra, anxiety of Spielbeger and depression of Beck were used. The data were analyzed by SAS program using $x^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, Cronbach ${\alpha}$ and t-test. The results of this study were as follows. Pain level(p=0.001), state anxiety(p=0.018), trait anxiety(p=0.002), and depression(p<0.001) improved significantly in the experimental group. Also, there was significant difference between the experimental group and the control group on the depression(p=0.012). Aromatherapy was effective in physiological and psychological therapy. Also it can be applied in combination with existing Oriental medical therapy.

Secondary diseases that occur during the rehabilitation of breast cancer survivors are factors that can negatively change the physical and psychological state of the patient. The rehabilitation after treatment of breast cancer survivors is an important process to prevent cancer recurrence and increase the survival rate because a negative psychological state significantly impacts the long-term survival rate. This study identifies user requirements for the development of functional bras for mastectomy patients in Korea. Participants included 133 patients with one or more breasts removed due to breast cancer and an average age of 53.2 years (53.21 ± 7.57 years, minimum 33 years, maximum 69 years). Women in their 50s had the highest participation rate of 48.9%. Most maintained the same bra size before surgery; however, some experienced changes in bra size because they are not irritated by wounds caused by surgery. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to material when designing a functional bra because it can irritate the surgical site. Only about 41.4% of bras were worn by breast cancer patients because of price burden and lack of education, not complaints related to clothing design and wearability or body shape. Most purchases at hospitals or medical institutions require consultation with a specialist who provides information about a bra mainly at the hospital. The most important considerations when buying a breast cancer bra were size, fit and shape stability.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore status of activity of daily living, interpersonal relationship, depression and health-related quality of life in patients with traumatic hand injury and identify factors that influence health-related quality of life. Methods: The participants were 104 outpatients with impending hand microsurgery from D city. The data were analyed using Pearson's correlation, t-test, ANOVA, and hierarchical regression with SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: There were statistically significant differences in HRQoL to gender, age, marital state, and level of pain. HRQoL had significant correlations with ADL, IADL, relationship change, and depression. In regression analysis, depression, marital state, ADL, and level of pain explained 48% of the HRQoL. Conclusion: Findings of this study allow a comprehensive understanding of patients with traumatic hand injury. It is necessary to develop nursing intervention program for improving the health-related quality of life in patients with traumatic hand injury by considering psychological care for depression as well as physical care.
Purpose: A descriptive study was conducted to examine the levels of distress, state anxiety, and physiologic responses in postoperative patients under patient controlled analgesia (PCA), and to determine correlations among the variables. Method: The study sample included women who underwent an elective hysterectomy procedure or other gynecologic surgeries(N=100). Subjective distress was assessed by visual analog scales around 8 hours postoperatively. Trained nurses collected objective distress data through observation of subject's behavior and vital signs. Data were analyzed with frequencies, percentages, means, Pearson correlation coefficients, ANOVA, and the Scheffe post test using SPSS/PC 11.0. Result: Subjective distress, objective distress, and state anxiety scores were relatively low, except pain scores(5.31 out of 10.0) among sub-scales of subjective distress. Women who had a total abdominal hysterectomy showed significantly higher levels of both subjective distress and state anxiety than those after a minor gynecologic surgery. In relationships among variables, subjective distress correlated positively with postoperative state anxiety, but not with the amount of analgesic medication, verified by further analysis on sub-scales of subjective and objective distress. The higher the levels of state anxiety, the higher the levels of tension, dyspnea, facial change, and systolic blood pressure observed. Conclusion: Regardless of effective pain management, most postoperatively experienced distress in gynecological patients was derived from surgery associated anxiety and pain. Specific psychological strategies should be established as well for those with high levels of state anxiety to facilitate prompt recovery.
