In the study about the logical basis and interpreting methods of animal experiments using rats in traditional medicine, several conclusions are obtained and summarized as following. 1. The logical basis of the animal experiments in traditional medicine is the essential homogeneity between human and rat defined as various transformation of one Qi(一氣) packed the cosmos. 2. Morphologically, the rat has abundant Yin(陰) and less Yang(陽) in most of anatomical characteristics. 3. Physiologically, the rat has unstable heart and mild temper with good fertility, which shows the features of Yin animal. 4. Pathologically, the rat shows the pathology of injury of viscera by stresses(氣激傷臟) and pathological transformations of internal water(痰飮水濕) mainly. 5. Constitutionally, the rat is alike to water type man(水形人) or Soeumin(小陰人) out of Yin Ren(陰人). 6. So, the rat is the proper experimental animal for diseases of sputum and water, emotional stimulations, endocrine system, heart, kidney, Yin syndrome(陰證) etc..

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effect of Korean medicine (KM) treatment for Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP). Methods: Five HSP patients who demonstrated a Yin deficiency and who had a history of a previous upper respiratory tract infection were included in this study. Four patients had arthritis and three had severe stomachache. One of them appeared to have proteinuria and hematuria before starting KM treatment. Results: All patients were improved with only herbal medicine, Jarotang (JRT). Purpura in the lower extremities and abdominal pain, which were not treated by using a corticosteroid, disappeared and had not recurred after 6 months. Conclusion: These cases indicate that JRT may be effective in treating HSP in patients who demonstrate Yin deficiency, even though the number of cases was limited to five.

In order to clear the basic concept about oriental medical physiology and pathology, We studied the theory of three yin, three yang, and it is based on the principle that yang goes forward and yin goes back. The result were summarized as follows. 1. It showed how to originate about the concept of three yin three yang. 2. It showed the logical basis concerning that the TAIYANG channels are open, the YANGMING channels are shut, the SHAOYANG channels are pivots, the TAIYIN open, SHAOYIN shut, JUEYIN pivots. 3. According to the opening, closing, pivoting principle, It explained the exterior and interior relation such as TAIYANG and SHAOYIN, YANGMING and TAIYIN, SHAOYANG and JUEYIN. 4. According to the opening, closing, pivoting principle, It showed that arteries of the twelve channels rotated in lung channel of hand-TAIYIN, the large intestine channel of hand-YANGMING, the stomach channel of foot-YANGMING, the spleen channel of foot-TAIYIN, the heart channel of hand-SHAOYIN, the small intestine channel of hand-SHAOYANG, the urinary bladder channel of foot-TAIYANG, the kidney channel of foot-SHAOYIN, the pericardium channel of hand-JUEYIN, the sanjiao(三焦) channel of hand-SHAOYANG, the gall bladder channel of foot-SHAOYANG, the liver channel of foot-JUEYIN. 5. As arteries of the twelve channels was based on the cycle, the logical criticism about Napgibup(納氣法) was shown.

The purpose of this study is to give priority in Yin-deficient questionnaire items. if adequate priority is given, clinical judgment and questionnaire of the results is expected to be similar. The AHP is a systematic procedure for analyzing the elements of any problem hierarchically. Based on survey of expertise, as series of pairwise comparison judgements is performed to evaluate the various elements in the hierarchy. We are expected to use the AHP analysis that would apply to oriental doctor's diagnostic process analysis. In this study, korean medical doctors experienced over 5 years was included. Results given the importance to Yin-deficient questionnaire items, Results given the importance to the questionnaire items, the most important item was Irritable fever on the five Hearts, the second was tidal fever.

The binary classification, Yin & Yang, can be shown in our culture. Yin & Yang thinking reveals the Up/Down (Principal/Subordinate) relation in space, and Before/After relation in time, and it shows the sequence of Contrast${\to}$Reconciliation & Unification${\to}$Contrast. For example, a follower is Yin against King, while Yang as a father against his son in our trational cognitive structure. With Left/Right, Front/Rear, and Upper/Lower, In/Out division is a basic body-space term to grasp the space position. In the traditional Korean house, when we go out from the deepest 'In', Anbang to Daechung, we may call Anbang 'In' and Daechung 'Out'. When from Daechung to Anmadang reversely, we call Daechung 'In' and Anmadang 'Out'. Namely, Daechung is both 'In' and 'Out'. This is a fallacy logic in view of western basic conception. 'The In/Out Structure, system of a series of inner spaces, is defined as a transformation of cognitive structure of Yin & Yang thinking to the Korean architectural space. The space structure is one of the important deep structure in Korean society.' The concept of the space structure, apperred in east Asia, can make humane space, for it is not a physical 'type' of typepology but related to cognitive structure of human thinking, The structure is applicable to space design in modern society, for the cognitive structure exists in living culture by transformation.

Objectives : The objective of the current study is to determine the protective effect of Ukyium(Yougui-yin) on the apoptosis induced by zinc. Methods : Zinc is known to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), including superoxide anion ($O_2$) and hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), which eventually contribute to cytotoxicity in a variety of cell types. We investigated the viablity of cells, $H_2O_2$ generation, chromatin condensation and nuclear fragmentation in Hoechst dye staining and $IkB-{\alpha}$ degradation in C6 glial cells of $ZnCl_2$ between pretreatment- and not pretreatment-group with Ukyium. The former methods were researched by Time- and Dose-dependent manners. Results : We demonstrated that pretreatment with Ukyium prevented zinc-induced cell death of C6 glial cells and apoptotic characteristics including chromatin condensation and nuclear fragmentation. Ukyium also prevented $H_2O_2-induced$ cell death. We further confirmed that Ukyium decreased zinc-induced generation of $H_2O_2$ and inhibited degradation of $IkB-{\alpha}$ by zinc in C6 glial ceHs. Conclusions : These data indicated that Ukyium (Yougui-yin) prevents zinc-induced apoptotic death of C6 glial cells via inhibition of ROS generation, such as $H_2O_2$ as well as inhibition of $IkB-{\alpha}$ degradation.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explain differences of cesarean section rates according to San- Yin-Jiao(SP6) acupressure for women in labor. Method: A noneqivalent control group pre test - post test design was used to explain differences of cesarean section rates according to SP6 acupressure. The participants were 209 women who were assigned to one of three groups SP6 acupressure(n=86), SP6 touch(n=47), and control group(n=76). For 30 minutes, the SP6 acupressure group received SP6 acupressure, and the SP6 touch group received SP6 touch for the duration of each uterine contraction. The Control group was encouraged to deep breath and relax for the duration of each uterine contraction for 30 minutes. Result: The rates of cesarean section were 12.8%, 29.8%, and 22.4% for the SP6 acupressure group, SP6 touch group, and control group respectively. There was a significant difference among groups (p=0.049). Cesarean section rateswere significantly different between the SP6 acupressure and non-SP6 acupressure group(p=0.035). Conclusion: This finding shows that 30 minutes of SP6 acupressure was effective in decreasing the cesarean section rate. Therefore, SP6 acupressure during labor could be applied as an effective nursing intervention.

Two new species of the lichen genus Placolecis are discovered in China, namely P. kunmingensis An. C. Yin & Li S. Wang and P. sublaevis An. C. Yin & Li S. Wang. The new combination P. loekoesiana (S.Y. Kondr., Farkas, J.J. Woo & Hur) An. C. Yin is proposed. Placolecis kunmingensis is characterized by having simple, spherical or ellipsoid, hyaline spores, and pear-shaped pycnidia; while P. sublaevis can be distinguished by its thallus forming larger aggregations with slightly flattened lobes at the thallus margin, and urn-shaped pycnidia. Descriptions, a phylogenetic tree and a key are provided for all the known Placolecis species in China.

Objectives: This case report examines the effects of traditional Korean medicine for unspecified tremor with xerostomia caused by psychometric drug intake. Methods: A patient who suffered from unspecified tremor with xerostomia caused by psychometric drug intake was treated with acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and traditional Korean medicine for 30 days. We provided the patient with herbal medicines including Ondam-tang-gagam (溫膽湯加減), Pumsimgieum-gagam (忿心氣陰加減), and Hoichunyanggyeok-san-gami (回春凉隔散加味). Symptoms were charted and evaluated using the Yin-deficiency questionnaire score, Yin-deficiency scale score, dry mouth symptom questionnaire, and visual analogue scale. Results: After treatment with Korean Medicine and pharmacopuncture, the frequency and degree of tremor has decreased, and degree of Xerostomia also improved. The Scores of Yin-deficiency questionnaire score, Yin-deficiency scale score, dry mouth symptom questionnaire, and visual analogue scale were also improved. And we could see reduction in the level of distribution of gastrointestinal heat at Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging test. The patient's Symtoms (Xerostomia as well as unspecified tremor) were improved after treated with Korean Medicine and pharmacopuncture. Conclusion: Korean medicine treatments may be valuable for xerostomia caused by psychometric drug intake.

The Mandala art therapy is used as a clinical method for helping patients to perceive their internal existence and to maintain harmonious between body and mind. Despite the fact that Mandala is congruous with the oriental philosophy, there are few studies that approach Mandala from the view point of the oriental medicine. Method : This study looks into the Maudala art therapy from the perspective of Yin-Yang Wuxiug(陰陽五行) and examines the possibility of using Mandala art therapy in the oriental medical practice. Results : In Analyzing the symbols of Mandala, the lines can be interpreted in terms of Yin and Yang, and the preferences for colors and the style of expression can be interpreted in terms of the body organs associated with colors and emotions in Wuxing. In addition, the clinical effects of Mandala, such as body-mind harmony and self-examination, are congruous with the Suncbeondo(先天圖) of the oriental medicine primer. Conclusion : The Mandala art therapy bas a potential to be used for medical diagnosis and treatment in the oriental medicine. Therefore, it is necessary to research and develop various Mandala art programs and assess their effectiveness through applications to medical cases.
