To develop a nutrient solution for a closed hydroponic system in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) 'Atlantic' and 'Superior' potatoes were grown with the nutrient solutions whose strengths were 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 of the concentration of the nutrient solution developed by the National Horticultural Experiment Station in Japan. The best results in potato growth and yield were obtained with 0.5 and 1.0 strength nutrient solutions, and nutrient compositions for potato were determined based on the 1.0 strength nutrient solution; $14.4me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;N,\;4.2me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;P,\;7.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;K,\;5.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;Ca$, and $3.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;Mg$ for stolon growth stage and $14.8me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;N,\;4.0me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;P,\;8.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;K,\;6.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;Ca$, and $3.0me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;Mg$ for tuber growth stage. To examine the suitability of the nutrient solutions developed for potato, the strengths of 1.0 (PS 1.0S), 0.75 (PS 0.75S), or 0.5 (PS 0.5S) were compared with half-strength of Japanese Horticultural Experiment Station' solution (JH 0.5S). Changes in pH, EC, and mineral concentrations in nutrient solutions depended more on solution strength and growth stage than on the type of nutrient solution. However, most elements in solution remained constant with plant age in PS 0.75S solution during stolon growth stage, and in PS 0.5S solution during tuber growth stage. The greatest growth and tuber yield was obtained in the standard strength solution (PS 1.0S), and potato solution developed in this experiment was recommended for hydroponic culture of potato in a closed system.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the optimal media for 'Pechika' ever-bearing strawberry grown in hydroponic culture system in summer highland. Three mixed media (1:1, v/v) of peatmoss with perlite, rice hull, and granular rockwool, and four solution strengths of EC 0.5, 0.75, 1.0 and $1.25 dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ were tested. Root zone temperature in peatmoss+perlite media was 1 to $3^{\circ}C$ lower than in the other media. The culture medium of mixing to peat moss and perlite was most effective in producing good yield and fruit quality. The culture medium of mixing to peat moss and perlite was the highest about 1,632kg/10a to yield yearly average, but was very undulating 732 kg/10a to yield in 2004 year and 3,013kg/10a in 2003 year. The deformed fruits were increased when the solution strength was increased, especially in EC $1.25dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The soluble solids and the acidity content of fruits were increased with higher solution strength regardless of media. The uptake of Ca and Mg was inhibited at higher solution strength, and the uptake of N, P and K was promoted. Therefore, the culture medium of mixing to peat moss and perlite was the most suitable culture medium to product strawberry in summer, because it had the highest yield even though fruit quality among treatments was not significant.
PSRC column is a concrete encased steel angle column. In the PSRC column, the steel angles placed at the corner of the cross-section resists bending moment and compression load. The lateral re-bars welded to steel angles resist the column shear and the bond between the steel angle and concrete. In the present study, current design procedures in KBC 2009 were applied to the flexure-compression, shear, and bond design of the PSRC composite column. To verify the validity of the design method and failure mode, simply supported 2/3 scaled PSRC and correlated SRC beams were tested under two point loading. The test parameters were the steel angle ratio and lateral bar spacing. The test results showed that the bending, shear, and bond strengths predicted by KBC 2009 correlated well with the test results. The flexural strength of the PSRC specimens was much greater than that of the SRC specimen with the same steel ratio because the steel angles were placed at the corner of the column section. However, when the bond resistance between the steel angle and concrete was not sufficient, brittle failures such as bond failure of the angle, spalling of cover concrete, and the tensile fracture of lateral re-bar occurred before the development of the yield strength of PSRC composite section. Further, if the weldability and toughness of the steel angle were insufficient, the specimen was failed by the fracture of the steel angle at the weld joint between the angle and lateral bars.
Lately outmoded and functionally obsolete buildings constructed in 1960s and 1970s are often remodelled and restored. Even though there are not serious structural defects in the existing buildings, many old buildings have been reconstructed to improve residence quality or to extend residence area of the buildings. The experimental or theoretical research on plane expansion of RC apartments is quite scare. In this research, 12 specimens and 19 RC slabs connected by hinged joints were tested. The new slab was connected to the existing slab by hinge joints injecting dowel bars between two slabs. Main parameters of the slabs are types of the dowel bars (D13 and D19), spacing of the dowel bars (150mm, 300mm, and 450mm), and the locations of the steel bars in the existing slabs. The test results indicated that the shear strength of the RC test slabs having various types of dowel bars was about twice that calculated by the ACI 318-02 code. All slabs failed in concrete spatting and the dowel steel bars did not reach their yield strengths.

A feasibility study on the application of self?shielded flux cored arc welding to the on-site SM520 steel bridge box fabrication for express trains and high way construction instead of gas-shield flux cored arc welding was conducted in terms of weld soundness, mechanical properties, toughness and microstructures. All welded specimens made with the self?shielded FCAW process were tested by magnetic particle and ultrasonic techniques and they were found to be sound. All multipass weld specimens made with both self-shielded and gas-shielded FCAW processes showed yield and tensile strengths of $462{\sim}549\;MPa$ and $548{\sim}640\;MPa$, respectively. The impact values of Charpy V-Notch weld specimens also met with the required value of 40J at $-20^{\circ}C$. The hardness values of the top area of weldments were higher than those of the bottom area because of higher residual stresses in the near surface. It was found that welding characteristics of SM520 steel by the on-site welding conditions with self-shielded FCAW showed almost equivalent to those by gas-shielded FCAW in terms of sound welds, mechanical properties and microstructure.

As buildings are becoming taller and longer-spanned, the requirements of high-strength and reliable steels are becoming increasingly stringent. Structural steels, however, acquire significantly different mechanical properties when their strength becomes higher. In this study, the mechanical properties, welding characteristics, and conformities of the 600MPa-grade high-strength steel were tested. The 600MPa-grade steel plates exhibited stable criterion strengthvalues and showed low carbon equivalents (${\mathcal{Ceq}}$) and composition (${\mathcal{Pcm}}$) as well as excellent welding hardness. In the tensile strength test, all the specimens were found to have strengths of over 600MPa. In the Sharphy impact test, the impact-absorbed energy of the V-notch specimens was shown to be 47J at the KS limit. Moreover, the maximum hardness of the specimens in the weld-heat-affected zone at a normal temperature was the same as that before welding. Their weld metal properties, however, were found not to be as good as those of high-strength steel. As such, the details of high-strength steel must be determined.
Recently, during the multi-level fusion with pedicle screws, interspinous spacer are sometimes substituted for the most superior level of the fusion in an attempt to reduce the number of fusion level and likelihood of degeneration process at the adjacent level. In this study, a finite element (FE) study was performed to assess biomechanical efficacies of the interspinous spacer combined with posterior lumbar fusion with a previously-validated 3-dimensional FE model of the intact lumbar spine (L1-S1). The post-operative models were made by modifying the intact model to simulate the implantation of interspinous spacer and pedicle screws at the L3-4 and L4-5. Four different configurations of the post-op model were considered: (1) a normal spinal model; (2) Type 1, one-level fusion using posterior pedicle screws at the L4-5; (3) Type 2, two-level (L3-5) fusion; (4) Type 3, Type 1 plus Coflex$^{TM}$ at the L3-4. hybrid protocol (intact: 10 Nm) with a compressive follower load of 400N were used to flex, extend, axially rotate and laterally bend the FE model. As compared to the intact model, Type 2 showed the greatest increase in Range of motion (ROM) at the adjacent level (L2-3), followed Type 3, and Type 1 depending on the loading type. At L3-4, ROM of Type 2 was reduced by 34~56% regardless of loading mode, as compared to decrease of 55% in Type 3 only in extension. In case of normal bone strength model (Type 3_Normal), PVMS at the process and the pedicle remained less than 20% of their yield strengths regardless of loading, except in extension (about 35%). However, for the osteoporotic model (Type 3_Osteoporotic), it reached up to 56% in extension indicating increased susceptibility to fracture. This study suggested that substitution of the superior level fusion with the interspinous spacer in multi-level fusion may be able to offer similar biomechanical outcome and stability while reducing likelihood of adjacent level degeneration.

This paper presents the safety and strength of simplified composite H-beam panel bridges (SCHPBs) using 3-dimentional finite-element program, ABAQUS (2007) and experimental tests. Two finite-element models (one-steel-girder-and-composite-deck model and four-steel-girder-and-wide-composite-deck model) were reviewed to predict the strength and load distribution factor (LDF) values of the composite bridges. Based on the results of the finite-element analyses, the behaviors of the two models were investigated, and deflection and strain gauges for the experimental specimens were set up to obtain the ultimate strengths and the LDF values. The ultimate strength of the one-steel-girder-and-composite-deck specimen was estimated to be 840 kN. The yield and plastic moments of the four-steel-girder-and-wide-composite-deck specimen were obtained to be 2.4 and 4.1 times the design moment based on the live loading condition of the Korea Bridge Design Specifications (2005). The SCHPB were found to have enough strength for safety under and after construction.

Saline corrosion is one of the major degradation mechanisms for stainless steel type 304 (SS304) dry storage cask during the spent fuel interim storage period. Slow strain rate test (SSRT) and neutral salt spray test (NSS) were performed at $85^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$ with 0.5 wt% sodium chloride mist sprayed on the cold-rolled SS304 specimens of different degrees of reduction in this study. The weight changes of the NSS specimens tested at $85^{\circ}C$ for 2000 hours differed greatly from those at $200^{\circ}C$. The weight loss of NSS specimens was not significant at $85^{\circ}C$ but the weight gain decreased gradually with increasing the cold-rolled reduction. The yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile stress (UTS) values obtained from the SSRT tests for lightly cold-rolled specimens in the salt spray environment at $85^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$ are slightly lower than in air. But for those with 20% reductions, the specimen strengths were no longer changed by the saline corrosion. The preliminary results demonstrated that the quality and performance of cold-rolled SS304 is acceptable for fabrication of dry storage casks. However, more work on the corrosion behavior of cold-rolled stainless steel in the saline atmosphere is needed to better understand its long-term performance.

High-molecular-weight maleic anhydride-grafted polylactic acids (HMMA-g-PLA) compatibilizers were prepared by melt grafting in a twin screw extruder using di(tert-butyl-perxoyisopropyl)benzene (PK-14; as initiator), maleic anhydride (MA), and divinylbenzene (DVB). To determine the properties of the prepared HMMA-g-PLA compatibilizers, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Melt index (MI), and back-titration analyses were performed. On increasing DVB concentration, grafting yield of HMMA-g-PLA increased but MI decreased because 𝛽-scission of PLA was restrained by the DVB, and thus, the molecular weight of HMMA-g-PLA increased. PLA-based wood-plastic composites (WPCs) were prepared using HMMA-g-PLA by melt blending through a single screw extruder. The flexural and impact strengths of WPCs compatibilized with HMMA-g-PLA were greater than those of WPCs produced without HMMA-g-PLA. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies indicated that increased mechanical properties were caused by excellent interfacial adhesion between PLA and wood fibers due to the addition of HMMA-g-PLA. However, rather high contents of HMMA-g-PLA reduced the mechanical properties of WPCs. We believe that lower molecular-weight of HMMA-g-PLA added as an compatibilizer, compared with PLA polymer, caused the reduction of mechanical properties.
